Advice for traveling with an infant..?

Momma to 4

Hello Everyone- We recently got a call that a very close uncle of mine has passed away. His funeral is Wednesday evening, so we will be traveling Tuesday. We have about a 5 hour drive to make. I have 2 daughters. A 26 month old & a 3 1/2 week old! We will be traveling with both girls. We have never taken a long trip with such young ones...
Any tips for traveling with an infant?!
Thanks!
She is formula fed... if that helps at all :)

Answer
First of all sorry for your loss.
My husband and I made a trip from Rich VA to Pittsburgh PA, with a 2 1/ yr old and a 3 week old. Even though my older baby was potty trained we put her in pull-ups just in case we could not get to a rest stop quick enough. For her we packed a back back of coloring books, reading books and some small toys. Also some juice sippy cups and crackers and snacks. For the 3 week old he was on formula, we had water already measured out in the bottles, when he needed to eat we mixed in the powdered formula. I would sit back there and keep him in his car seat with his seatbelt on to feed. I would quickly take him out of his seat just long enough for a burp, then put him back in and buckle him back up. As far as changing his diaper, when he peed I would unbuckle him leave him in his seat and change him then put the clean diaper on and re-bucklehim. When he pooped, we pulled over to a gas station or rest area.

For the most part babies at that young of an age 3 1/2 weeks get "put" to sleep when in a car anyway. So the baby will probably be the easier one. The older baby will probably get ancy and want to get out of the seat.

Good Luck and again I am sorry for you loss

Traveling with an infant?

KS

Me and my 7 month old are traveling by plane to California from Texas, unfortunately she has just started teething as well any tips on how to make the trip as enjoyable as possible for both of us?

Answer
Just bring her favorite toy and snacks. When actually on the airplane...you just have to keep her entertained as long as possible.

My son usually fell asleep on each plane ride. But there were a couple rides where he just wanted to not be held and get into everything. Ugh!

We fly all the time. We actually did when my son was 7 months as well. That trip he slept all 4 plane rides.

Good luck!

Anyone drive a 4-door car with 2 car seats?

in wit

How do your carseats fit? We are thinking about ttc sometime next year and right now I drive a 2007 Mazda 3. It will be paid off in April 2011. We don't want to trade it in until its paid off, but if we can get 2 car seats to fit in there, then we won't have to get a new car right away and I like the idea if not having to pay a car loan for awhile.

Right now DD is in a Recaro Signo that is in the middle. I also have a Combi infant seat that we used to have in the middle. My hubby is tall and if we put the Recaro in back of the driver seat, he won't be able to drive unless he drives really squished against the wheel. I am wondering if it would fit with the infant seat rear facing in hte middle and the Recaro in back of the passenger. I havent tried it yet. I guess if I have to, I would rather but narrower car seats then have to buy a new car

Answer
we are getting ready to have this same dilemma. I am going to have to put my sons convertible carseat behind the driver. Bc my husband has to have the seat back further. The infant seat in (less than 5 wks) is going behind the passenger side seat. This is only way we can fit in our 4 door explorer. I wish I had two middle seats bc I would feel much better about where my boys are seated. I havent really seen to many ppl try and put infant seat and convertible car seat right next to each other. You can try and see if they are safely installed that way. Im just afraid my toddler might try to hit or throw one of his toys in the baby seat if hes that close to his brother.

Baby registry and purchases before your baby shower?

Married an

I have not started my registry nor do I plan to until probably around Thanksgiving time. I am just curious what everyone bought before their showers. I am a big CraigsList surfer but haven't purchased much yet. I think you can find great stuff on there for fractions of the price. I was thinking I would buy used a video baby monitor, cloth diapers (to find my preferred type/brand) and dresser and crib set (once I check out the recalls, etc). I have also been given a bunch of stuff from my sister in law like bouncy chairs, bassinettes, infant swing, clothing, baby tub, stroller & carseat (not sure about it's safety rating though) and a bunch of other stuff I have no idea what it is.

What is left for my baby registry?

Baby #1 due February 1, 2011 and shower is only 2 weeks before the due date!
Having the shower so close because that's when my sister (has time and) offered to have it for me. I would prefer to have it after the baby is born that way out of town people could meet the baby and we don't know what we're having yet!

Answer
Well, i have a 7month old and i'm still finding things i need. I suggest getting some sort of toybox/storage system...i really like those cubbies and fabric bins. you won't really need it for a while, but i'm already tripping over all her toys! a hamper. i have a little 3drawer plastic office organizer for her headbands and clips, it's nice for little odds and ends. I agree with a previous comment, it's better to buy a new carseat if you are able to. A soft lamp, so when you go in to feed/change/check on baby you won't wake them up too much. you'll need a finger nail clipper. again, i agree w a previous person...a diaper warmer isn't necessary, just hold it in your hand for a minute. blankets, lots of socks (they always go missing) pacifiers and a CLIP, don't forget a clip to attach it to the baby or car seat. one little gadget i was given, and loved was this timer (from babiesRus or target i think) it has a few timers for last diaper change, feeding, medicine administration, how long they've been asleep. it helped me alot in the beginning to wake her up for her feedings instead of letting her sleep thru them.

Toys for infant?

cj2004

I need some ideas on toys for my son who is 4 1/2 months old. I stay at home with him and he gets lots of attention. But there are moments I need to do something. Like right now I've been trying to get ready to go to the store and he's just whining. He's in his exersaucer with a baby video in. Nothing keeps his attention for any length of time, even a few minutes. I know part of it is his age. Is there anything that has worked for anyone or am I just going to have to deal until he learns to play better with age (and when does that happen)?

Answer
Get the Baby Einstein Baby Mozart, Beethoven, etc. DVD or videos. My daughter is now 8 months, and she STILL will sit there for at least an hour and watch the pictures and listen to the music. It's AMAZING how much she loves it.

Also, LAMAZE toys are terrific, especially for children your sons age that are starting to play with toys more with their hands. They are very colorful, and normally make some sort of noise. You can get them at places like Babies R Us, Kohls, Toys R Us, etc.

Also, I got a vibrating rocker chair from Fischer Price that has a detachable toy arch. It has a cow/farm theme. She has loved that chair pretty much since birth. She naps in it, plays in it, and it's wonderful!!!

Finally, anything with a mirror in it. Look for activing chairs or gyms that have mirrored things on them. My baby now likes to have conversations with herself! lol!

Good luck!

What is the most useful infant activity toy?

eradi-bat

Answer
Hands down the best toy for an infant is one of those activity mats. You know the ones - you put it on the floor, made of fabric, the bottom part is colorful and has different textures and things to play with and there are usually things that hang down so that if the baby is laying on her back, she can look up and reach for the dangling toys. It's a must have.

Lightweight infant car seat?

Vanessa

Hi there...
I'm looking for an infant car seat that is light weight &; won't outweigh me while my baby is inside of the carrier!
Small &; Cheap ish , I don't wanna spend too much on a car seat if their gonna use it not that long.
Something neutral for its for boys and girls cause we don't even know the sex yet.
I've went thru so many sites &; The seats I've found, are ugly, or just too bulky &; fat.
If you can help me awesome, if not please direct me somewhere that possibly can.?
Thanks.
Goodnite.
I am in the U.S.
So U.S. only please.

Answer
I found this link that gave the lightest weighted ones for 2008, I don't expect they've changed much. Evenflo is around 10lbs, the Snugrides just 2 lbs heavier, and Chicco Key-fits about 9lbs as well. So I'd start there. Chicco isn't as cheap as the other two, but typically has higher weight limits so you can use it longer.

If I might give advice though... don't set your heart on a baby car seat carrier. Be adaptable. It's much easier to carry your baby in your arms than to try and maneuver the size of the carrier as well as the weight of it. Also, you can't put a carrier on a shopping cart, it's dangerous and has been recommended against for years but every day idiots keep putting it on top of the shopping cart. More recently, they've found that leaving a baby in the car seat for long periods of time can cause breathing problems, their oxygen levels drop. Add into this that people tend to bump the seat against the walls, on stairs, put it up on counters and it can fall, and you have a lot of things that can compromise the shell of the seat and make it less safe.

It just adds up to plenty of reasons not to really worry about carrying the seat anyway. Leave it in the car. The car seat is the best for in the car of course, but once you're out of the car a baby should lay flat (in a stroller or in a bed) or be in someone's arms (or a wrap, chest carrier, etc that would hold them in that similar fashion and is approved for newborn use.)

With my first, I used to carry her everywhere in the seat and I used to put it on top of shopping carts. I found out the danger from reading about it after I started having major back and shoulder pain from the carseat. With my son, we used an infant seat but didn't take it out of the car. I used an Ergo baby carrier when we went into stores or for walks and it was so much nicer than the car seat was. I'm pregnant again and looking back at that (I've given the seat to my sister and I don't trust her use of the seat to ask for it back, she took it out all the time and used it much more like a carrier) We've decided we're going to just go to a convertible car seat (Britax Boulevard 70, it will last until the baby is 70lbs so it's worth the cost since it'll basically be 7 years before we have to replace it...) If money is a concern, then I'd skip the infant seat and go right to a convertible and just leave it in the car.

Other wraps that are less expensive are like the Moby Wrap. I got my Ergo for 1/2 the normal cost on "Baby-steals.com" so that helped. Beware of rip-offs, but sometimes you can find a used one on ebay.

Add: It's amazing to me that Baby Trend doesn't say not to put on shopping carts. It's not a problem with the car seats, it's a problem with the design of the carts. You simply can't put the car seat up top and not expect a tip-over. Scary.

To make it clear, I'm not saying to go Britax Convertible, that's just what we're planning on doing because we have a good history with them holding up well. There are cheaper convertibles like the Scenera which will rear-face to a good weight, or things like the Graco My-Ride or other seats that will rear-face to 35-40lbs and forward to 65+lbs. If you have time, watch sales and you can usually count on getting 10-25% off. You might even want to watch garage sales and pick up a bouncer or something that someone is getting rid of cheap that you can take to Toys R Us if they have a trade-in event (usually they have 1-2 in a year and will take any used item then you get 25% off towards whatever you buy including seats. Combine this with their baby registry 10% off...)

Pl suggest toys or activities for an 8 month boy?

vs2008

My son will turn 8 months old in a few days. He has had a bouncy chair, play mat, books and variety of soft toys at home. He also likes to play with cell phone and TV remote as well as being shown colorful books. He has a jumperoo and lots of toys at the daycare. I am wondering if I should get a jumperoo for the weekend (at home). Does he need a swing?
What other toys would be stimulating for him for the coming months and year. If you have a suggestion, do let me know. My son likes playing with us, so I and my husband spend a lot of time going out for walks, swinging him around, singing and reading him books. What else should be fun for him?
Any suggestions you may have are welcome.
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.

Answer
Blow bubbles.

Balls (one of those tiny plastic pools and some ball pit balls (you can buy them at Wal Mart) is inexpensive and fun!

A swing, but not the infant kind (he is probably outgrowing that by now). My 6 month old LOVES to swing- we have the Little Tikes kind (we have a dolphin that is in like-new condition and we got it for our oldest child's first birthday, and she is almost 13 now) that looks like a dolphin. They also have airplane ones and ones that are not shaped but just as durable.

Look at One Step Ahead (dot com) and request a catalog. They have an indoor swing that you can hang in a doorframe like you do a Johnny Jumper. They have other indoor swings/slides and toys for infants.

My son will be 8 months old the day after Christmas, and I am getting him something from Toys R Us that looks like a shopping cart. He can push it around like a walker, but the top, front and sides have different activities such as a bead maze.

Play games such as Peek-A-Boo and do motions such as Itsy Bitsy Spider.

I recommend music- I love the Cedarmont Kids cds (they have lullabies, nursery rhymes, songs for babies, toddlers and older children. They also have Christmas music). I also have the Build Your Baby's Brain cds which I like (classical music) and my babies have liked as well.

Get one of those baby proof picture albums and put pictures in of various loved ones- you, dad, grandparents, etc.

A non-breakable mirror.

A wagon is my most recommended gift suggestion. Even my 12 year old and 10 year olds still play with our various wagons. You can pull your son now, later he can use it to pull his toys (or younger siblings!), and they come in handy when going to the park or beach to haul the necessities.

14 month baby hates bath time?

kimB

My son screams and cries when it is time to take a bath. He gets very excitedf when we are fulling hte tub and he helps put in his toys. When we put him in he instantly screams. And the water isn't too hot or cold. This has been going on for 2 months now. He loved to play in the tub with all this little toys and then we were at the in-laws. My husband and I were giving him a bath ( in December) and he has screamed ever since. Any ideas as to how long hating the bathtime will last? I am going out of my mind. He won't even play in his infant tub without having a meltdown.

Answer
It varies so much. My son (3.5) still doesn't enjoy the washing part and wants to go straight to the fun play part of it. So I get the washing done in about <5 minutes.

-Play kid music
-Offer toys that are only for bath time
-Sing songs/make it fun
-Dip his feet in and out and smile/laugh

A lot of times your (the parent)'s shocked/scared face of seeing your kid cry will make them even more uncomfortable, I've noticed this with my son. So lighten up and laugh.

A BIG thing with my son since about age 2 was fear of water in the eyes. When I rinsed his hair, he went CRAZY. It was making me nervous of making a mistake. I finally figured out to let him hold a small towel to his eyes so any over spill would hit the towel, and not go into his eyes/face.

Also, he didn't like rinsing in general. So I'd count back from "20" "19....." slowly or fast depending on how much time I'd need to finish rinsing. At 14 mo, I am not sure if he'd understand counting, but you could sing a favorite song and when it ends, the cleaning is over.

Slowly try dipping him in the water, in and out, just the toes, then the knees, splash him, maybe he's sensitive of temperature change. Do it slowly.

First I get ALL the bathing done and then it's play time so I am not on my knees for 20 minutes, but it may be different with your son. Play...wash...play...wash.. on and on.

Have other water 'experiences' that are fun....even out of the tub. Fill up a small tub of water (supervised) and let him throw a boat in, bath toys....don't make the tub/kitchen sink always for serious bath time/associated with screaming.

Is he scared of the tub? I had a "DUCK" inflatable tub that my son just HATED. I had to return it even though *I* thought it was cute.

Is it something simple like him slipping in the tub (fear of drowning), or ...? Put a towel under his butt so he won't slip...sometimes these baby tubs are slippery!!

8 month old son and toys?

linda d

what toys are good for xmas and are worthwhile for a long time for a 8 month old boy who will be 10 months on xmas??? I am going to get him the fisher price activity walker but what else that is worth the $??
I have the gooble and go hippo and the drop and roll a rounds dinosaur
toys that assist motor skills would be great

Answer
With 3 sons I have learned more about boy toys than I ever wanted to know. Here are a few things to consider before spend a ton of money:
Are you into educational toys for him??
Are you want toys that he can entertain himself alone or are you willing to use them with him?
How far a head of his age are you wanting to expose him to toys?
How is he developmentally?? If he is behind you may want to consider toys to assist his motor skills.

Once you decide on those questions it will be easier to give you assistance one wht are good toys. My boys are 8-10 hours away from their grandparents on both sides, so birthdays and holidays they usually get extra. My playarea for them is a barn that is attached to our home and it is 1000sq ft filled with toys. I have an opinion on all of the toys they have or have been exposed to. I know I didn't really answer your question, but I just thought the advice on what types of direction you might be headed with toys would be more helpful than just a list of toys.

Edit:
For Gross Motor skills (the large muscles): I suggest
- Learn & Groove Musical Table by: LeapFrog ~ this is a standing activity table that will entice your son to pull himself up to a standing postion.
- Baby Gymnastics Bounce & Spin Zebra by: Fisher-Price ~ I purchased this for my nephew who is 11 months old. He loves it. It is a great work out for his little legs.
- 5-in-1 Adjustable Gym by: Little Tikes ~ this grows with your child physical developments and stimulates eye/hand coordination.
Now for Fine Motor skills (small muscles like finger manipulation): I suggest
- V.Smile Baby: Infant Development System by: Vtech ~ yes this is just like a video game, but it requires your child's brain development to coinside with finger manipulation.
- Laugh & Learn: Learning Puppy by: Fisher-Price ~ this wonderful puppy helps your child to learn ABC's, 123's, parts of the body, colors, play games, plus sing along to 10 favorite songs. Dog bone collar lights up to the music!
- Baby's First Toys by: Sassy ~ this one is by far the best for fine motor skills. There are a lot of pieces for your child to link together and even chew on.

How to disinfect infants toys?

Suri

I have an underground storage space where I live in Italy. It's quite damp and very dusty there. I've stored toys there from when my kids were little.I'd like to pass on these toys to my grandchildren. The toys have been there for probably 17 years. Is there a way of safely disinfecting the infant toys that will go into baby's mouth or should i throw them out? They were stored in a closed bag and then in a box. Most are hard plastic ,but a couple are stuffed.

Answer
You can definitely disinfect the toys. You just need to get a surface wipe (they have them at most supermarkets) get a surface wipe and wipe the toys clean. If they were in closed bags, they should be fine with a little bit of cleaning. Give them to your grandchildren after you clean them, they'll love them!

How do i pay less child support than the guidelines allow?

Ginger

my husband had an affair with a woman and had a baby. He makes a lot of money and is going to have to pay 1,200 on child support, based on the guidelines. Is there anyway to rebuttal this amount? The child is 3 month, his needs do not merit 1,200 a month. His mother just wants the money to go shopping.

Answer
I am sorry but a 3 month old's needs CAN merit $1,200 a month considering the money is supposed to be used for housing, food (formula), clothing, diapers, toys, etc... AND if she is working then daycare costs alone can run $1000+ for an infant...

I spend just about $2400 a month on my daughter: Additional rent for a 2 bedroom rather than 1 bedroom, clothing (8 months old in 12+ month clothing already), formula, baby food, diapers, toys, Dr appointments, medication, new carseat (grew out of the infant seat already), entertainment (as in pumpkin picking), college savings plan (at $25/month), life insurance on myself for her (I carry $280k for $65/month which isn't much...), daycare is $1100/month, etc etc etc...

As long as the child is taken care of then there is no way you can say about how much the courts award...

You should stop focusing on her and more on the issues in your marriage... Remember that your husband cheating on you and that's why this is even an issue...

Infant photography props!?

I have an outdoor infant shoot tomorrow with a 3 month old baby girl. Im shooting at a gorgeous park with waterfalls and grassy fields. I have one cute white wicker basket i will be using as a prop but i need a couple more ideas for props. I love those cute little beds people use as props. I need quick/inexpensive ideas for props since the shoot is tomorrow.

Answer
I like the simple white cloths/blankets that are wrapped round babies in many of the proffesional photos. Also natural things work really well.. flowers/leaves
or just the babies favourite toys because it would make them feel natural. However you could try charity shops for baskets in the early morning at like 9-30 ish or any cushions that take your fancy. also they are good for things like fake flowers if you would want them :) sunflowers are nice, maybe go to your florist and grab a few?

Need tips for outdoor tanning!?

1234

So I frequent tanning salons, I tan quick and dark there, but Ive never went tanning outdoors. I havent gone to the saloon in a few weeks because lack of funds, so I figure since the weather is nicer out now I can start to lay out outdoors. Anyway, I still have a base tan, but not as dark as I was. How long on each side should I lay out? also what sort of lotions/oils and whatnot should I apply to my skin?

Extra-virgin olive & coconut oils have natural sunscreens. Carol's Daughter Gelee de Soleil Browning Oil with SPF 15 is a good oil to use; it doesn't have any of the harmful toxins found in most popular beauty brands, like:

* Mineral Oil, Paraffin & Petrolatum â Petroleum products coat the skin like plastic, clogging pores and creating a build-up of toxins, which in turn accumulate and can lead to dermatological issues, like slowing cellular development, which can cause you to show earlier signs of aging. Suspected cause of cancer & Disruptive of hormonal activity.

* PARABENS â Such as methyl- propyl- butyl- & ethyl- parabens: Widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic industry (including moisturizers). An estimated 13,200 cosmetic and skin care products contain parabens. Studies implicate their connection with cancer. They have hormone-disrupting qualities â mimicking estrogen â and interfere with the bodyâs endocrine system.

* Propylene Glycol â Used as a moisturizer in cosmetics and as a carrier in fragrance oils. Shown to cause dermatitis, kidney or liver abnormalities, may inhibit skin cell growth, and is a skin irritant and sensitizer.

* ALCOHOLS â Such as Isopropyl Alcohol, SD Alcohol 40, Ethyl Alcohol: Alcohols dissolve the bodyâs natural moisturizers and strip the skin of its protection, leaving it vulnerable to infection. Alcohols destroy skinâs pH balance, and since they absorb water, they speed up wrinkling.

* Sodium laurel or lauryl sulfate (SLS), also known as sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) â Found in car washes, engine degreasers, garage floor cleaners⦠and in OVER 90% of personal care products! SLS breaks down the skinâs moisture barrier, easily penetrates the skin, and allows other chemicals to easily penetrate. Combined with other chemicals, SLS becomes a ânitrosamineâ, a potent class of carcinogen. It can also cause hair loss. SLES is sometimes disguised with the labeling âcomes from coconutâ or âcoconut-derived" - and is found in many popular body washes and toothpastes!

* Toluene â Poison! Danger! Harmful or fatal if swallowed! Harmful if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Made from petroleum or coal tar, and found in most synthetic fragrances. Chronic exposure linked to anemia, lowered blood cell count, liver or kidney damage, and may affect a developing fetus. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) contains toluene. Other names may include benzoic and benzyl.

* WAXES â Such as Paraffin, Candelilla Wax, Carnuba Wax: Waxes are widely used in cleansing creams, eye creams, and moisturizers. Waxes clog pores, creating blackheads and whiteheads. They also smother the skin, which over time creates an enlarged pore problem.

* FD&C â When this abbreviation precedes the name of a color, it means that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has certified it as safe for use in drugs and cosmetics, but not food. D&C colors are usually synthetic, coal tar colors. Theyâre toxic and should be avoided when at all possible.

* PHTHALATES â These chemicals rarely find their way onto an ingredients list, but they are present in many health and beauty products just the same. Wherever you see âperfumeâ or âfragrance,â phthalates are present, because they are used to preserve these synthetic scents. Recent studies have shown that phthalates may be mutagenic, carcinogenic, and adversely affect male sperm, that they increase levels of testosterone and estrogen in humans, and are central to breast cancer risk. They are an ingredient in nail polish and other lacquers, and in soft plastics (e.g., infant chew toys).

* Lanolin â A yellow, semi-solid, fatty secretion from sheepâs wool is widely used in skin and beauty care products. It can cause an allergic reaction in some people, as well as enlarged pores.

* Acetone â Used in nail polish and nail polish removers, this colorless, volatile liquid is often used in astringents, fresheners, or clarifying lotions. It is extremely toxic and will dehydrate the skin, while speeding up the aging process.

* Acrylamide â Found in many hand and face creams. Linked to mammary tumors in lab research.

* Phenol carbolic acid â Found in many lotions and skin creams. Can cause circulatory collapse, paralysis, convulsions, coma and even death from respiratory failure.

* Dioxane â Found in compounds known as PEG, Polysorbates, Laureth, ethoxylated alcohols. Common in a wide range of personal care products. The compounds are usually contaminated with high concentrations of highly volatile 1,4-dioxane, easily absorbed through the skin. Dioxaneâs carcinogenicity was first reported in 1965 and later confirmed in studies including one from the National Cancer Institute in 1978. Nasal passages and liver are the most vulnerable. Dioxane is easily removed during the manufacturing process by âvacuum strippingâ. Warning: It is a synthetic derivative of coconut. Watch for hidden language on labels, such as âcomes from coconutâ.

IF SO, you should throw them away IMMEDIATELY and Tell ALL your friends and family!!! (Extra-virgin olive and/or coconut oils are great alternative moisturizers, and they contain natural sunscreens, until you find something else without these toxins) Hope this helps!!! Good Luck!!!!!

Are there any daycare owners on here?

dreamee

I'm planning to open a daycare in August 2010. I'm thinking about buying a house in a commercial area. I want to start by having no more than 25 children from the ages of 6 wks-18 months. I think it would be cheaper since I wouldn't have to worry about so many toilets per child, food, playground equipment, field trips, etc. I would like to expand maybe after three years to include older children. Do anyone think this is a good way to start?

Answer
I definitely think your plan can work. Make sure you are doing as much research and gathering as much information as you can right now.

Infant care is in high demand and many places only do preschool aged children and up. I don't know that it will be cheaper because infants usually require a higher ratio (one adult for every 4 infants is typical) while older children can be watched by fewer adults. However, you will be able to charge a lot more to watch infants than you could for older children.

Start saving your money now. The more money you have saved (and don't have to take out in loans) the better. If you are planning on opening a daycare in a low income area, you may also be able to get a grant. You need to research and apply for grants early. Start collecting baby equipment, toys, and books now. You won't want to buy everything new, but slowly collect it through garage sales, donations, etc. You have to do everything you can to keep your initial costs down (you can always upgrade later). Buying a house is a good idea (as long as you get a good deal and can afford the payments initially even without the daycare income).

Contact the agency that licenses programs in your state and get some initial feedback and information about what you are wanting to do so you can start the approval process. You will need one year of hard work to be able to open your doors.

Do y'see the love in this one?!?

The Feeling of Done

Sometimes, like an architect
where my write is the ribbon
on opening day;
sometimes just fully spent,
and my poem is the towel to
wipe my tears away!

Sometime, the fool drunkard
inebriated by this cocktail
penned to true love;
sometimes the wolfish glutton
who writes and writes but
never gets enough.

Sometimes a wee small infant
a strange format my newest toy to
learn to rattle;
and sometimes I am a warrior,
with cause shield and word sword brandished
well in battle!

I have desided to buy my baby for Christmas only wooden toys. And if I buy plastic I will make sure its not from China.
Wooden toys dont have slinters they are made so well that a child can bit it and wont get splinters.

Answer
I'm also making a concerted effort to buy more locally-made toys, made from organic products such as wood, this Christmas. I just feel that we haven't learned all that we will in the coming months/years about plastics and how inorganic materials in children's toys can affect their health.

Do you look on the back of the package to find out where it was made before buying it? Do you buy made China?

Fedup Vete

The last question was suppose to be, "Do you buy stuff "Made in China" or do you try to find something else to take the place of it."

How about infant toys? Do you return it if it says China on it?

Answer
I look to make sure. Especially if Im giving the toy to a baby or toddler. They seem to chew on everything. Im checking chocolates and candy now too.

Babies and Toys?

TT

When do babies usually become interested in toys. My 2 month old only seems to like her dangly toys like from her bouncy seat, swing and crib. I was just wondering if she should be inerested in rattles and other things yet. Also, what are some of the better and more educational toys that they first play with?

Answer
Every year Oppenheim evaluates infant toys and gives awards for the best 'developmental' toys that engage the baby's senses and encourage different skills (eye tracking, eye-hand coordination, understanding of cause and effect, understanding of object permanence, gross- and fine-motor development etc.) You can see the award winning toys here: http://www.toyportfolio.com/Infants/Index.asp.

Tiny Love has several award winning toys. Their website is also very informative about how each of their toys encourages infant development. http://www.tinylove.com
They have several amazing infant activity gyms. (See link below.) The activity gyms tend to be pricey but you can find them for reasonable prices on Craigslist or Ebay.

Lamaze also makes many award winning toys. (See link below.) Their toys tend to be soft and cuddly with many textures, peek-a-boo flaps, patterns, colors, and sounds to explore.

Have fun watching your little one explore and see her developing right before your eyes. :D

hi everyone, im a first time full time single mom, any suggestions on different intellectual play activities i can do with my almost 3month old daughter?

Answer
Congratulations! My baby is almost three months too!

Here's what I do:
breast feed, sing the abc's song and other songs, play classical music, say body parts and point to them (nose, mouth), say "kisses" and give a kiss, point to colors (objects, animals, etc) and say what they are, have baby feel different things (feathers, soft blankets, rock, etc), give lots of cuddling, talk to my baby often, play "peek-a-boo," read to my baby, model being polite (saying "thank you, please," etc) use a play gym, and use other award winning toys that are said to help cognitive development.

Additionally, I make sure that my baby gets enough rest and milk, which is as important as it is simple.

3 month old baby and toys?

bubuma

At 3 months do babies need "fancy" toys or are the cute little dangle ones good? Also, I am still having a hard time sitting my son in his bouncer with the toys and mirrors etc while i clean, eat or do whatever. I feel bad letting him play alone while I do these things. How do I get over this? Or should I feel bad?

Answer
Keep in mind more "fancier" the toy the probably more chance something might break off and he can put it in his mouth.

Stimulating baby aged 3 months (without toys)?

MaggieSA

I have spent the first three months of my granddaughter's life with her, in spite of living almost 2000 kms away. Grandpa visits us once or twice per month. Sadly, I have to return home soon - I am going to miss her tremendously.

I want to know from all the mommys and nans out there - what sort of educational stimulation can I give my baby? I started exercising her back and neck after two weeks, and we were all amazed at how strong she is. After a month I started with her legs and now she kicks very strongly. I have done the same with her arms (clapping) and she is in very good shape.

I would like to start some mental stimulation but have no idea where to start. Already, since age 2 weeks, I hanged a very colourful flower for her to look at. She loves it! She also has toys all around her to stare at, but I feel there must be more!!!

Please help, your answers will be very highly appreciated. Bless everyone with a baby, it is so rewarding. They are made to be cherished

Answer
Read to the baby! My daughter loved to be read to at that age. When you walk around the house with her tell her everything that you are doing so that she can begin learning the names of things, you can also put a mirror in her crib which helps her learn observation skills. I bought a book called Games to Play with Babies. It is organized by month and tells you games to play and what the game teaches your baby. Here are two websites that have a few developmental games. http://www.sosmart.com/0-3months.html

What is your infant or toddlers favorite bath toy?

Q. My son's favorite bath toy is a windup fish that swims around the tub. His second favorite is, of course, rubber ducky.

Answer
Out of all the 475945793 toys Landyn HAS to have in the bathtub with him he loves a scooper cup that looks like a lobster. He likes to drink his warm yucky dirty bathwater from it...YUCK! He also likes his own "razor" (it's plastic of course!) and his shaving foam :)

Help!! Which baby bath do I keep and which do I return?

Lala

I just had a baby shower and I received two baby baths. Three actually (one is a folding one used in the sink.) AND and a bath seat. I don't want to bathe him in my bath tub.

Here is a description of each.
1. Rather large infant-toddler bath. Comes with mesh sling for new borns, and soap dish/playfull wheel.
2. Medium /small sized infant-toddler bath. Compacted fold.
3. Bath seat. Comes with temperature control and bath toy. Useful until baby can pull himself to standing position.
4. Foldable infant bath. Useful up to 6 months.

Answer
I LOVED the big infant/toddler bath, because as your child grows you can change how much water you use, and how the tub is used. personally, my husband and I found it preferable to put the baby tub in the adult tub, because our kitchen was just too small to deal with. We hated the mesh, instead, I opened the drain on the tub, and used a towel as a pad for the first few weeks. I also had a handheld showerhead, so I was able to keep everything simple and comfortable. When she was able to sit up I started leaving a little water in for her to play with, and as she aged, we were able to move her to the other side and give her some room. Since she used it in the tub, we never had to worry about serious transitions, even from baby tub to grownup tub was easy, because she was used to being there anyways.
