toys for infants?

leigh_ann_

I went to target today to find a toy for my 5 week old, but I dont know what kind of toy to get her. I know they say to get ones that are black and white and maybe red. I thought about getting her the floor gyms but they are $30-50, would it be good to get it for her now or should I wait until shes a little bit older? I just feel like shes bored.. i know i know dumb feeling....
another weird thing that just came to me-do you think babys are affraid of the dark? I know that they where in the dark for 9 months but now that they are out in the real world could it happen? I have noticed that when she is fussy at night and shes laying on my chest she wines a little bit but when i put on our light on low she falls asleep pretty fast.. so am I crazy or could she be affraid of the dark??

Answer
The floor gyms are actually better now then later. The reasoning for this is that once they start moving around they won't use it as much, I started using one when she was a month old and had her do her "tummy time" on it and what not. Other toys or things to buy that I would recommend is soft books because it is an easy way for you to interact with her but she can also play with it on her own. Anything else like the soft blocks, or soft rattles, etc. Babies at this age don't actually play with too much but if you want to have these things around for when she does its easier than running out and buying it all at once.

As for being scared of the dark, my daughter is just over a year now and still sleeps with a soft light on in the hall outside of her room. she never slept in the complete dark without crying!

Moms of infants who celebrate christmas?

mommy of 3

What are some good presents for a 5 months old who will just be turning 6 months on the 18th of dec.?

Also I need more things to do with my son now that it is winter and snowing outside! so what are good things to do inside?

Answer
Gifts for that age depends on how far along your baby is. If he is sitting up then you can get musical toys made by vtech that they can sit at and play with. Clothing works well, and books...lots of books. I have a 5 month old who will be turning 7 months on dec 24th...and I bought books, clothes, stuffed toys, his first hockey stick(lol) and I plan on getting a few toys that have lights and sounds. I think the most entertainment for my son at this age will be looking at the lights on the christmas tree.
As for activities inside, reading, tickling, playing with their toes. Let him watch you make supper, clean around the house. I dance with my son to my favorite music as well, and he really enjoys turning in circles with mommy.(plus it is exercise for me)
Also, consider buying a sled and a warm snowsuit for him and go out for walks on warmer winter days. The fresh air does wonders for them, and they'll enjoy the lights and sounds of winter. Enjoy your baby's first Christmas!

Am I just bias or is my child a prodigy?

Heather L

She was born June 18, 2009 so she is about 14 months, and today she made a rhythm. She has a rattle and a pin head toy and she was making a rhythm and repeating it and dancing to it. It was like (chooka = rattle) (chood= Pinhead)

Chooka Chooka Chood Chood Chood Chooka Chooka Chood Chood Chood Chooka Chooka Chood Chood Chood Chooka Chooka Chood Chood Chood Chooka Chooka Chood Chood Chood

Then when she saw me watching with my mouth open wide she stopped and smiled at me.
Opps thanks..... someone commented I made a typo her birthday is Aug. 18, 200(8) making her 14 months old.
You all are just haters, she may not be a prodigy thats a little extreme, but this is a talent not a fluke because she saw how intrigued I was at what she was doing, now she is making beats with everything.

I believe its in her blood her grandfather is a famous composer in Venezuela and her father is a musician/guitarist. She has been around music since she was in the womb, mostly instrumental rock due to her father composing guitar pieces.

I believe now that we see she has interest in it we will just support her in what makes her happy and we will see where this takes her.
You never know !!!!!!!!

But I do know still water Stagnates.

Answer
Ignore all the rude people. I think they may be jealous!
Yes, research shows that kids exposed to music in womb and as an infant can actually improve intelligence. This goes for reading to baby's in the womb too.

Sounds like you may have a little musician. Yes, baby's make noises but not all have rhythm. I always hear about famous singers talk about how they started singing or playing an instrument at a very young age.

What will I need upon my baby's arrival?

Krissy

Okay.. I know I could read baby books and magazines but I'd like to know from real Mothers..

This is my first child (Baby boy due May 31st, 2009), and I really want to know what I need on the day that my Son comes home from the hospital. I started buying the basis this week. I have so far..

- 3 bottles
- 2 cans of formula, one soy one regular

I made this list along with others a few months ago for a friend who had recently found out she was pregnant. There are things you won't need right away, or maybe even never if you just don't want them. And i might have missed some things but at least it's a good starting point and you can go from there. Best of luck with your family :)

Costs of baby's first 4 years?

Lalo

What would be a good average estimate of the cost of raising a baby in the first four years?

What years are costs the highest?
What are the most expensive costs each year?

Answer
It can be as little as just the cost of extra laundry and cheap food, or it can be the cost of diapers, nannies, preschool, expensive toys, brand named clothes.

The infant year will often cost the most, because even if you breastfeed and use cloth diapers, you are still washing those diapers and going through 4-5 wardrobes. Also you will likely buy at least SOME speciality baby things, like pacifiers, swings, swaddles, a crib or co-sleeper, burp cloths, nursing pillow, and other toys for infants. This is the year where every 3 months means an entirely new set of toys and clothes.

Year 4 will generally be the cheapest, since they only need 1 wardrobe for the year (well 2, summer and winter clothes but these can overlap... a T-shirt and coat for instance) and you don't have specialty foods to buy like whole milk or organic (although some may continue this, most feed preschoolers regular food who would feed an infant / toddler organic, and the food tends to be junkier and cheaper types, like mac and cheese instead of sweet potatoes).

You can spend a lot at any age though if you choose.

It is hard to put a price tag on it. I would say as little as $200 a month per child is reasonable, but it is easy to go over that especially with infants when you include what you are likely to buy for "start up". This is a "base amount" and going under that would be difficult IMO. Also, that is NOT daycare / nannies / preschools. It is being fairly frugal, but not crazily so. That does include laundry, some used / generic clothes, used toys, basic toiletries and medicine, and food. Also the occasional bigger item purchased used (like a stroller or car seat - which are listed commonly for as little as $30 each).

We use disposable diapers, but they are only $20 a month per child (they only need about 4 a day as toddlers). Food per toddler is probably about $80 a month (healthy and organic, you can be cheaper than this, but we don't do tiny jars / containers of things, which would cost more - just real food and whole milk). We pay $200 a year for doctor's visits with our health insurance. My mom buys their clothes (she is a cloths shoppingholic). For furniture this year we are getting 2 potty chairs for $3 each and a table and chairs set for $20. I buy mostly used toys, but lots of them, maybe $200 for the year. Wipes are likely $6 a month (2 cents each, we use at most 10 a day). OTC medicines, baby shampoo maybe $50 a year.

I suppose there is gas for playdates, but I would use gas going places anyway. Our car seats were gifts from someone I use to work with. Stroller a gift from a family member. I have a couple of other strollers I got cheap from Craig's list.

When you are really trying to keep cost down, the cost of food is going to matter. That can be a determining factor, because no matter what they WILL need food. You can't get around that. (Unless you get WIC, then the food is free).

I have twins and our money is tight, but I make sure they have everything. They have used versions, and I cook their meals. I am a SAHM. Most parents are not as able to be as frugal as $200 a month per child. That comes to $10,000 for 4 years. Food itself is going to be $21 a week (or $1 for a meal and a snack), and that alone is $4,000. Then you have laundry, clothes, big items, outings, toys etc. So I would put $10,000 as your "base" and from there it can easily go up.

What is the best eCommerce software for SEO?

Serendipit

Okay, I have an online store and I need an eCommerce software solution that provides the following:
1. Writes HTML without added "fluff" coding that impedes optimal SEO
2. Easy WYSIWYG editor - again that doesn't add superfluous code
3. Graphic customization and template options
4. Payment features integrated with paypal and other merchant accounts
5. No commission fee based on sales
6. Integration with billing software like Quickbooks
7. Streamlined Order processing
8. Integration with USPS click and ship for shipping labels.
9. Inventory control
10. Automated drop shipping function.
I am currently using an eCommerce solution but it generates 10 x more html code than it needs and I've read this can be detrimental for SEO. It also has limitations as it integrates with Paypal because I cannot ship through it. I have to process orders through my site and process shipping through paypal. There are other features I don't like as well, all detrimental to SEO, like page name conventions are numbered rather than having the name of the page, and how things link to a default.asp page instead of the .com main home page. I am a graphic designer and my husband is a programmer so we can handle pretty complete software but we need something that does it all and WELL for Search Engine Optimization!!!
We have been pretty successful with our own SEO - we've done the backlinking and article submissions, small paid advertising in key markets and such. In 6 months we've gone from a 1 to a page rank of 3 on Google. But we can do better and don't want our eCommerce software to hinder us in any way.

Site is: www.babysproutnaturals.com
The page rank 3 is what I'm listed at when I go to www.page-rank-lookup.com. Google has only indexed 2 page of my pages (the home page and /category_s/36.htm) with external links with a total of 174 links (I know there are more that Google isn't counting yet).

Answer
Besides your domain name, what "generic" keywords query do you submit at google.com in order to bring up your PR3 website. I tried searching for "organic baby apparel," and your website is no where to be found within 500,000 or so search results? Who's providing the PR3 ranking?

Nevertheless, here's a preliminary review of your SEO metatags along with some suggested improvements:

1. Current: <title>Cloth Diapers, Organic Baby Apparel and Unique Gifts for Mommy and Baby! Live Natural Baby! </title>
<meta name="robots" content="index,follow">

Improvement by eliminating spamdexed/duplicate entries and ad copy followed by a territory/business locator, i.e., city, state: <title>Cloth Diapers, Organic Baby Apparel, Unique Gifts for Mothers, Natural, Non-Toxic | Fair Oaks, California</title>
<meta name="robots" content="index,follow">

2. Current: <META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Our mission is to offer safe, organic, non-toxic products for infants and mothers: cloth diapers, bumgenius cloth diapers, Happy Heiny's cloth diapers, Wrap n Wear baby carriers, Nature Momma Angel Baby, The Baby Bunch layette sets, Zee Spot Organic Onesies, Vulli non-toxic rubber toys. It is our goal to provide education about affordable product alternatives for mommy and baby that are not only better for infants and the environment, but have additional benefits by providing healthier solutions for busy, working families and actually save you money! Baby Sprout Naturals aims to inspire you to make a change in your purchasing habits, and to eliminate toxic and harmful products from your everyday use. Help us save the earth, one baby at a time!">

Improvement: Re-editing of this entry to no more than 45 words forming a singular sentence.

3. Current: <META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="bumGenius, diapers, cloth, baby, mother, mom, mommy, babies, cloth diapers, cloth diaper, cloth diapering, cloth-diapers, diaper, natural, nontoxic, non-toxic, environmental, earth friendly, easy, Happy Heiny's, pocket diaper, all in one, one size, friendly, fun, games, education, articles, environmental articles, Wrap n Wear, Baby Legs, Leg warmers, cotton diaper, Vulli, toys, The Baby Bunch, onesie bouquets, natural parenting, granola mommy, organic apparel, unique gifts, Nature Momma Angel Baby, Wild Dill toys, Nubius Organics, Sckoon Organics, Isabooties Shoes, Conduct Happiness Apparel, The Playful Penguin Toys, RosiePosie Organics, Baby Earth.">

Improvement with removal of spamdexed/duplicate entries, use of compound and plural variations and finalization of all entries to no more than 15 'generic' keywords total: <META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="diapers, cloth, baby, mother, mommy, babies, natural, nontoxic, environmental, earth friendly, easy, pocket, all in one, size, fun, games, education, articles, environmental, toys, bouquets, natural parenting, unique gifts">

Hopefully you will be able to incorporate these improvements which follow the Google.com guidelines in order to elevate your PR by use of effective SEO metatags.

Good luck!

My MIL says i'm a bad mother to my newborn...(please help me :( )?

Q. I gave birth to my beautiful daughter Amberlyn Jade on June 17, 2011. My husband and I made the decision long before I gave birth that we wanted to have time to bond with our little one and get settled at home before accepting family and friends to come and see her.

We got home on June 20th and his mother was sitting in our driveway waiting for us. Apparently she had called the hospital because my husband and I had shut our phones off, and the hospital told her I'd been discharged. My husband got out of the car and told her she needed to leave and wait for us to call. My MIL told him she wasnât leaving without her grandbaby because she wanted to take her and show her off to her friends. My husband told her under no circumstances would ANYONE touch OUR daughter unless we were present. This made her cry, and she finally left. We went in the house and got settled in with our LO. After a week had passed, my husband and I felt we were ready to share our daughter with family, and I called my mother and he called his and told them they could come over. When my MIL arrived, I was sitting in the living room with my princess asleep in my arms, and my MIL walked straight in and took her out of my arms and started kissing her face and bouncing her up and down and rocking her. She didnât even wash her hands before she stuck her finger in her mouth and started saying, âOh your my precious baby Iâm gonna take you home for the weekend and buy you toys, I have your crib all set upâ, and all this other sh!t that pissed me off. My baby was screaming (she had woken her up) but my MIL said âOh your mommy doesnât know how to take care of you like I do.â My husband grabbed our daughter and took her to the nursery to calm her down and I told my MIL she needed to leave and she wasnât allowed back. She told me I was a bad mother for trying to keep her grandbaby away from her and that I didnât know how to be a mom. I told her to get out, and she left but she kept making rude comments. My mother showed up about 15 minutes later, and I had no problem letting her hold Amberlyn, because she washed her hands and waited till I handed her over. I told my mother what had happened and she told me not to pay her any attention, and that I was a great mother because I was being very careful with my daughterâs health and well-being. My family has all been over to see her, and they respect my husband and I enough to wash their hands before they hold her, they donât smoke before they come, they give her back if she starts to cry and they donât pass her around, they ask us if we mind if someone else holds her first. My husband and I really appreciate how supportive my family is being, but my husbandâs family has refused to come over, even though weâve invited them, including his mother back, as long as they follow our rules. His mother calls him every day and tells him that Iâm a bad mother because I wonât let her take my daughter out. Um, hello, sheâs barely is a month old, there is NO way in hell my daughter is going anywhere without her mother. She tells my husband that Iâm a selfish and inconsiderate mother who has postpartum depression and should be in rehab and to let her take care of our baby until Iâm âbetter.â

Iâve been letting the insults roll off my back, but last night his mother showed up at our house and my husband let her in. I was in the nursery breastfeeding my daughter and she just barged in and told me I needed to get done because she was gonna take the baby out and bring her back in the morning after she had time to spend with her. She said I was a horrible mother and should be locked up for âdepriving her of her rights as a grandma to take her grandchild out and have her spend the nightâ

Am I a bad mother? Did you let grandparents take your newborn out? Did you let them have stay over at their grandparents house? Am I just overreacting to this? I know that new moms are overprotective, but am I taking it too far? Iâm scared my little girl is gonna lose out on having both sets of grandparents. I donât want Amberlyn to resent me for not letting her be close to her grandma :( What do I do? Iâm so confused and my husband doesnât think itâs a big deal but I do :( I grew up with a very close and loving family and I want the same for her, but if all my MIL is gonna do is call me a bad mother should I just ignore that side of the family?

Answer
You are NOT a bad mom, your MIL is crazy and if she is going to keep acting like this then the best thing you can do is keep your daughter away from her (if she won't respect your wishes in your own home, lord only knows what would happen if she had the baby for a few hours). My daughter is 5 1/2 weeks old and I have not let her go anywhere without me. The only time I left her was for 5 minutes with my mother while I went to get my mail, and that was only this past weekend. I will not be letting her spend weekends with my mom or MIL anytime soon which is especially hard for my MIL to understand because my stepson is with her every weekend. And the others are right about breastfeeding - At this age, it is absolutely detrimental that you feed on demand.

will a nissan rogue fit three car seats?

raeann k

I have a 6 and 5 year old in two booster seats and just found out i'm expecting.. Will a 2011 Nissan Rogue fit 2 boosters and an infant car seat comfortably or should i start looking around for something bigger

Answer
Congratulations!

It totally depends on what seats your children will be riding in and in what positions.

Many parents have successfully installed three car seats across as shown here: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=33226

I would look into the Chicco Key Fit 30 infant car seat as it is typically narrower than other infant car seats. Usually the KeyFit works best when installed in the center. Another option is using a convertible car seat straight from birth. Look at the lowest bottom slots measuring about 8 inches or less to ensure the harness straps can be adjusted at or below the baby's shoulders.

The Diono Radian is the narrowest car seat on the market that measures about 14" across the thighs and 17" wide at the shoulders. It is typically outgrown around age 3-5 rear facing and another two to three years forward facing. This means that it will be the last harnessed car seat your child will need. It is spendy, but it is indeed worth it. The Radian R100 can typically be found on sale on amazon for around $207: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=diono+radian+r100

A newborn needs their car seat in at at a 45 degree angle to keep their airway open and the Radian does take up a ton of front to back space in the vehicle. You could try installing it in the center seat and have the top part of the Radian fan between the two front vehicle seats. Or you could have the Radian installed behind the passenger seat, but have no one sit in the front passenger seat until your baby gets some head control. When your infant is older, you can always used the angle adjuster by Diono to get the seat more upright.

You can always use the Chicco KeyFit 30 then get the Diono Radian later so you don't have to eat the dashboard. It is completely up to you =]

But I have to warn you- boosters can be difficult to buckle in a three across situation. You might get some scraped knuckles, but it is indeed do-able.

Also, if you do install in the outboard seating position for the infant seat, installing with the seat belt generally gives you more room. When installing it with the seat belt, the car seat can be scooted closer to the door. The seat just needs to be installed with less than an inch of movement. The KeyFit 30 has a built in lock-off to aid seat belt installs.

My best advice for you is to go to Toys R Us and try out car seats and different combinations. If you are installing a car seat in the center position in the back seat, LATCH cannot be used as they aren't reinforced in the center (unless your vehicle manual says specifically that they can be used in the center). The lower anchors on the side seating positions are connected by a metal bar; this is (usually) not found in the center.

How can I go green with raising my infant?

SayWhat?

How can I go green with raising my infant?
Glass bottles instead of plastic,
organic and petro free baby lotion, soap, etc
organic clothing and bedding,
wood floors in nursery,
cloth diapers.......WHAT ELSE? Thank you for your ideas!

Answer
Making your own baby food is a good one. That way your baby gets all the nutrition you get in mashed form. I use a KidCo food mill. You put the food in, crank the handle and baby eats what you eat for meals. It was a $13 investment that saved tons in baby food and you get to know exactly what baby gets.

Also instead of cloth diapers you could look into g-diapers. They have a website and are also sold at places like Whole Foods. They are a cross between a cloth and a disposable however instead of throwing away the diaper you flush a biodegradable insert down the toilet and wash out the outer shell. They have no pins and use velcro on the back so baby can't take off his or her own diaper.

And instead of wipes you could buy a box-o-rags that you re-use by cleaning with bleach or a natural cleaning agent (Shaklee makes a great one). You cut them into smaller pieces and dampen them when you have poopy diapers. They are usually recycled from old t-shirts so they aren't a rough fabric and very cost effective.

Getting fabrics that are made of soy, bamboo, or other natural replenishing fibers are not only safer but usually softer and last longer.

If you don't already have wood floors in your nursery, look for a demolition in your area of maybe a school, church or the like and ask about getting your wood from them. School gyms and churches usually have old wood floors full of charm and character and most often this stuff goes to the dump.

Buying wood toys (such as Melissa and Doug items) ensures your baby has child-safe yet fun, educational toys that aren't full of plastic and batteries.

One last thing I can think of. When storing baby food or breastmilk, buy cases of Mason jars. This eliminates the use of plastic ice cube trays (for freezing food), tupperware, and Saran wrap. The jars come in all sorts of sizes and are less expensive that Glad-ware in the long run.

My son's lead level was 5.0. The doctor advised me to get rid of all toys that were made in China?

London

My son is 18 months old, I don't want to expose him to lead. How to I determine what is safe and not safe. Having doing an inventory of his toys, the majority have been made in China. HELP!

Answer
Every responsible parent knows to keep cabinet doors locked so that young ones don't have access to dangerous chemicals, but what about lead, a toxin found in many common children's toys? How do you know if your child's toys contain lead and what can you do to minimize their risk of exposure to this harmful substance?

Lead is a toxic metal that can have devastating effects on the mental and physical development of children. The brain and nervous system of children younger than six years old are the most at risk for lead poisoning. Even low exposure levels can produce damaging effects ranging from impaired growth and hearing, to problems with posture and behavior.

High levels of lead exposure can cause deafness, blindness, convulsions, or in rare instances, even death. Even without severe effects, children exposed to lead are more likely to experience difficulties with reading and vocabulary, attention and focus, and fine-motor coordination.

So how does lead make its way into the products that consumers buy for children? Lead is used in manufacturing in paint and plastic used to make children's toys. Paint used in houses, on products sold for children, and on dishes has been banned from containing lead in the United States since 1978, but this regulation has not reached some countries that still export products to the US.

In those countries it is still legal to utilize lead in the production of plastic, even when the plastic is used to make children's toys. The lead acts as a softener to make plastic more flexible, which allows it to return to its original shape. The breakdown of the chemical bond between lead and these plastics forms lead dust, a known health hazard.

You can visit your State Department of Health's Lead Hazard Product Recall Website for information concerning toy recalls. You will also find a comprehensive list at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website.

There are home testing kits offered that are designed to test household items, toys, soil, and dust for lead content, but these do-it-yourself kits are not recommended as reliable by The State Department of Health and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Lead screening can help identify children with blood lead levels that may be dangerous. Infants that play with older toys (antique toys, toys passed down through generations, or toys made before the ban on paint with lead) and toys made in other countries may be at greater risk.

Before you buy new or used baby toys, make sure the toys that you intend to purchase do not appear on the recall list. You can even do some research about the country in which the toy is manufactured. Some stores now have information on file compiled to trace the country of origin for the toys that they sell.

You can also inspect toys that your child already plays with for chipping and peeling paint, the number one source for lead poisoning in children. Be careful when choosing colorful jewelry and toys, especially those imported from other countries.

Keeping your baby safe is a parent's primary concern. Baby Toys Galore offers a huge selection of developmental and just-for-fun toys for baby, including many made with organic products. Baby Toys Galore encourages parents and grandparents to keep baby safe by staying informed.

Hey, I got to research on whats the best childrens toy, song, television show..For the age of infants till teens

krissy m

Which one do u think is best and describe the features of it. Like for example why does it target the audience, the benefits and all..
Cheers.

Answer
Show for infants and children - Sesame Street. It is a learning environment that the kids don't even realize they are learning. It keeps their interest.
Song for toddlers to kindergarten - Wheels on the Bus. Keeps them interested, interactive, my 14 month old granddaughter is learning words that describe motion, ie, up and down, round and round, etc.
Toy for infants to 3 - tupperware. Harmless, non breakable, creative
I'm a fan of old reliable toys, crayons, bubbles, etc the things that rely on the child to use their imagination. Electronic toys for the younger set entertains but does not teach them how to entertain themselves.
Hope this helps.

lauren

i want to know what a baby does 2 & 3 months of age :)
what were your babies doing please be specific :)
thanks

Answer
2 months: Smiling, cooing, batting at toys, starting to laugh, lifting head off floor, following objects with eyes, able to sit with support, blowing spit bubbles.
3 months: Having conversations (IE: I talk and she cooes back), the mini push up (lifting her arms and belly off the ground while holding her head up), grabbing toys, trying to EAT her toys (haha), rolling belly to back, back to belly, able to stand while holding onto my fingers, plays with her feet and sticks them in her mouth.

Add: remember all babies develop at their own pace!

Activities for 8 - 15 mo olds?

diaryofado

I have recently started working in the infant room of a daycare center. Most of the infants are under 9 months, but we have an 8 month old a 12 months old and a 15 month old who tend to run over the little ones. The older 2 are especially rembunctious and fussy. Being the only teacher in the room that actually has children, I recognize boredom when I see it, where the other girls just think the boys are uncommonly fussy. I need some activities for them that we can do quietly while the other babies are sleeping, as well as some fun noisy activities that will get them up and active. Any suggestions?

Answer
Infants and young toddlers are not my specialty so I'm going to begin by saying visit your local library. Most usually have a parent/teacher section and there are many books available with activity ideas for this age.
These are from the book Beginning With Babies
Bubbles: Bubbles are slow moving, and babies can follow them with their eyes. This is a great outdoor activity on a breezy day. You can put a towel down on the floor indoors as well.

Peek-A-Boo Mirror: Cut a 1 ft square piece of heavy cardboard. Measure the length and width of the mirror. Subtract ½ inch from each measurement. Cut a rectangle the size of this measurement from the center of the cardboard. âFrameâ the mirror by securely taping it to the back of the cardboard so the mirrored side shoes though the frame. Cover the back of the mirror and cardboard with contact paper to make sure the mirror stays put. Decorate the frame with stickers or markers, if you choose. Then cut a 1 ft square form the fabric. Using strapping tape, create a flap by attaching the fabric square to the top of the front of the frame, covering the mirror. Now, securely attach the mirror to the wall or divider at the babyâs eye level. Babies enjoy watching their own faces (and yours) appear and disappear. This activity encourages babies to focus their eyes and helps them begin to understand that something can exist even if they cannot see it. Now any type of "Peek a boo" activity will be fun. I have put pictures on construction paper, laminated and added flaps to make peek a book pages. They are always a hit.

Acceleration: Prop sturdy cardboard on pillows or books to make a ramp to floor. Vary this activity by using an empty paper-towel tube. Let the wheeled objects roll through the tube onto the floor. Change the level of the ramp to control how fast the object rolls down. This activity helps babies develop their visual tracing and eye-hand coordination. It gives babies firsthand experience with the properties of gravity.

Texture Book: Collect 8 fabric pieces, each with a different texture (corduroy, satin, burlap, flannel, terry cloth, wool, polished cotton, silk, lace, etc). Cut each piece into a 6 or 8 inch square. Stack the fabric squares and sew them together on one edge so they look like a book. This activity gives babies a lot of different things they can touch, or have touch them, which helps babies become aware of a variety of textures and learn to distinguish between them.

Float and Sink: Place a pan of room-temp water on the floor protected with towels. Place an object that will float in the pan. Push the object under the water and let go so it will pop back above the water. Have the baby try. Talk about what she is seeing and doing. Repeat with objects that sink. Water is very interesting to babies because of the way it feels and moves.

Sticky Feet: Cut a 1 food square piece of Con-Tact paper and tape it, stick side up, to a clean floor or a piece of carpet. Masking tape or strapping tape does a good job of holding the contact paper in place. Encourage the children to stand and walk on the sticky surface with out socks. Allow the baby to explore the area on his own. Baby may want to experiment by touching the sticky surface or placing a toy on the surface. If baby is not interested in the sticky surface, leave it in place for awhile and observe how he avoids stepping on it. This increases babiesâ awareness of touch sensations. It also helps them to learn what sticky feels like and to distinguish that feeling from others.

Hide and Peek Box: While baby is watching, say, âbye-bye, rabbitâ then place the toy inside the box and replace the lid. Say, âWhere is rabbit?â or ask, âCan you take the rabbit out of the box?â Repeat as many times as the baby seems attentive. To renew interest add a second box. Hide a toy in only one box, adding the element of mystery: âWhich box is the toy in. This activity supports the development of the babiesâ listening skills. They are developing the ability to hold a mental image of the toy and to understand that the toy, even though out of sight, has not gone away. This is called object permanence.

Noisy Sock Ball: Cut cellophane into smaller squares or strips and stuff the toe of a colorful, patterned sock with crumpled pieces until you have a ball shape. Leaving about 1 ½ -2 inches above the ball, cut off the remaining portion of the sock. Securely sew the ball closed using the needle and thread. Babies enjoy dropping and throwing objects. This activity helps babies develop eye-hand coordination and encourage their exploration of the concept of cause and effect. The crinkling sounds adds interest to the ball and the baby will extend her play with it.

Jiggle Jug: Clean a milk or juice jug with handle. While baby is watching, drop 6-8 old fashioned wooden clothespins into and shake the jug. Shake the clothespins out and drop them into the jug again. A very young baby will enjoy the jug as a giant rattle. An older baby may attempt to empty the clothespins out and put them back in. The baby will enjoy shaking or kicking the jug. Add some background music and encourage the baby to shake the jug in time to the rhythm. This activity help the baby learn about cause and effect and develop eye-hand coordination.

Other ideas:
Make a magnet board.

Use contact paper sticky side out on the wall and let them stick various textured items on it as well as take them off.

"doll" clothespins on a rim of a can. Put on, take off, and drop into a can. Make it more difficult by using the lid and putting a hole a little bigger than the clothespin so they have to push it into the can.

Have fun!

Whats A Brony??????????

Karen

I heard people call people bronys on so many places (omegle.com, school, etc) and I really want to find out what it is so if you know please tell me. The person with the most and best answer wins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer
Definition: A person who is outside of the targeted demographic who likes the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Here is a little history.

1980: Started out as a toy line called My Pretty Pony. Was eventually bought by Hasbro.

1981: Generation 1 of My Little Pony. Some films and took place in a fantasy setting. There was also a film where the setting was in a modern city. A standard girl's show at the time.

1990s: Generation 2 didn't have a dedicated TV series or films but only had a toy line (although some consider the TV series near the end of G1's time to be part of G2)

2003: Generation 3 starts. The absolute epitome of what is "girly" in a stereotypical definition. Everything was girly, plot was absolutely horrible, and was definitely meant for girls who were of a very young age. Art direction wasn't very good either.

2009: Hasbro decided to rehash the Generation 3 characters and had some design changes. This was called Generatioin 3.5. Just like Generation 3, this was the epitome of pain and misery.

Late 2009: Hasbro decided to create a new version called newborn cuties. Animation was an abomination, characters were an abomination, nonexistent plot, and would lower your IQ. If Generation 3.5 was considered pain and misery, then I don't know what to call this one.

(Generation 3, 3.5, and newborn cuties are all considered to be the worst of all My Little Pony incarnations).

THEN...........

Hasbro and Discovery Kids eventually formed a joint venture television channel called THE HUB. Hasbro wanted to capitalize on the franchises they've owned (such as Strawberry Shortcake, Transformers, and My Little Pony).

When developing the fourth generation of My Little Pony, Hasbro confronted Lauren Faust and asked her what she could do with the franchise. Lauren Faust is known for working on The Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.

They were able to get very respected people of the cartoon industry such as Daniel Ingram (music) and animators who have worked on Samurai Jack and a bunch of others. There are also very highly talented voice actors in the show such as Tara Strong and Tabitha St. Germaine. If anything, the 4th generation of My Little Pony has a very large production value.

On October 2010, Hasbro launched the pilot episodes of the 4th generation called "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic." Many reviews praised the show saying that the show was actually very enjoyable to watch for the entire family. Of course, there were those such as the review by AMID that said seeing names such as Lauren Faust in the credits was a white flag of defeat. He says how disappointing it is to see such people in the credits because he says cartoons have become nothing more than marketing ploys to sell toys. This caught the attention of the cartoon board of 4chan. Most made image macros as a joke of MLP, but as some people watched a few episodes, some actually really liked it.

And so, from the depths of 4chan, Bronies (bro+pony) were born.

Here is some information regarding this fandom.

Equestria Daily, the main website for pony related news has over 240,000,000 views since its creation in January 2011.
Bronycon last summer had over 4000 attendees.
Everyday, there are meetups all around the world (listed in the nightly roundups of Equestria Daily).
Clinton was quizzed on MLP facts, Stephen Colbert had a shoutout to us, Conan O'Brien ponified himself and posted the picture on his twitter, Howard Stern talked about us (although in a bad way), a MLP shoutout is given in the Borderlands 2 ending credits, and Jetblue Airlines has even posted ponies on their twitter (and has created an original character with Bronies).
We have also been on Fox news, CBS, CNN, Yahoo news, local news outlets around the world, and in the official Top Gear Magazine!!!
There are over 300,000 images of MLP on DeviantArt alone.
John De Lancie, the voice actor of Discord and the actor for Q from Star Trek, is going to create an official documentary about bronies. They had a kickstarter campaign aiming for $60,000 but instead got $320,000 from the brony community.

Unlike other fandoms, Bronies are known for the content we produce such as music, art and fanfiction. FIMFICTION (pony fanfiction) has over 30,000 fanfiction. The longest pony fanfiction is over 608,000 words long (Harry Potter Deathly Hallows is 169,000 words long). Also, there is a fanfic called Past Sins that is going to be printed in physical hard cover copies (unfortunately the sign ups are over).

Also, if you want to have further information about the show and the community, I'd recommend you watch Saberspark's "Balld of the Brony" on youtube.

Hopefully you have a better understanding of Bronies and maybe you'll come to enjoy the show as well!

How do I deal with people hyper-genderizing about my baby?

Crane

I recently attended a party with my five month old daughter, and the other guests could not stop talking about what an extreme "girl" she was. It was fine at first - I mean, yes, she IS a girl - but it got to the point where no one was mentioning anything else. "What a girl she is! No one would mistake her for a boy! Look at those petite shoulders! Look at that face!" This went on and on. Worse, when she started touching the arm of another baby - a boy, who didn't mind, nor did his mother - others started saying, "What a forward female! Watch out for her!" I am confident that my daughter was NOT touching the boy out of any romantic feeling; she shows similar interest in little girls.

I just smiled through most of this, occasionally acknowledging, "Yes, she is a girl," but as she gets older, I don't want her to think that her primary characteristic is that of being a stereotypical "girl." How could I defuse this in future situations?

Answer
I know exactly what you mean!

I don't have any biological children, but hyper-gendered speech and actions to the children I care for (as a foster carer) is so strong at times that I dress all the newborns and small babies in neutral clothes and just say "I can't say the gender...". (We have had to hide children's gender before if they had a parent who was violent and prone to tracking their children down).

You could start with more neutral clothing.

What all your friends are doing is- unknowingly- reinforcing the stereotypes of femininity that society has taught us. There's not much to do about it, except maybe dressing your girl in the "boy's" clothes occasionally (or at least around these people) and giving her a mix of "boy" and "girl" toys. Which isn't a bad idea anyway.

Here's some common misconceptions about gender-neutral parenting, maybe it'll give you some ideas.

how often can my 3 month old have infant tylonol?

Dayna

like how many days in a row? she has a tooth coming in, she is being very fussy right now..it seems like they're hurting her. She wont nurse and nothing is making her happy...i been giving it to her for a few days now, but I dont know if i should give her any today..i called her doc and he said only give her drops nothing else..because she is too young for ore gel

Answer
I have a 3.5 month old son, and I asked my doctor about this earlier this week. (He's teething too right now.)
He gets the recommended dose for his weight every 4 hours if he's in pain, and my doctor said that as long as we're not giving a larger dose or doing it before 4 hours that he didn't have an 'x' amount of days that it can happen.
Basically, the amount of painkillers in infant tylenol or mortin is very small, so I wouldn't worry about it. I would try doing other things first, though. Infant oragel, teething toy, cold washcloth, etc.

Can toddlers ride Toy Story Mania?

cutie249

My son is 2 and only 32" tall. My husband and I want to ride Toy Story Mania at California Adventure, but we want to ride it at the same time. Will my son be able to go on the ride with us or can you only do parent swap? I read online that they have parent swap, but I want to know if there is anyone who has taken their 2 year old on this ride.

Answer
As long as he can sit up by himself he can ride. Each vehicle side holds two people where each have their own lap bars. However, they will let you place an infant between the two of you effectively having your son share the lap bar with either you or your husband. Even with this you will still proabably have to hold him sometimes. If you do not want to do this you can do a rider switch. Just ask for a Switch Pass from the cast member at the entrance to the queue. One other thing to think about is if you do a switch and it is just the two of you, you may find it quicker to go through the Single Rider line(if they have it open). If they have the Single Rider line open you probably will get through faster twice than once in the regular line and returning with the switch pass.

What kind of toys work best? Which do you recommend?

I have a doxin and she has a little rubber frog she thinks is her baby! What do i do?

Sasha Brad

I have a 5 year old doxin.... A few months ago I bought her this little rubber frog that squeaks and she is super overprotective of it. Seems like she thinks its her baby. when you grab the rubber frog then she freaks out starts whining loud and then when we give it back she lightly grabs it like she is trying not to hurt it. My boyfriend and I put it up on a shelf and she hurt herself trying to get up there with it. I dont understand why she is doing this. She lays in bed all day with it. She burys it in places that are soft like my bedding or under my pillows. She bites my cat if he gets anywhere close to her. She even carries it to the car when we leave to go places! She doesnt seem happy anymore and she never wants to play! HELP!!!!

Answer
That doesn't sound like she treats it like an infant, it sounds like she's possessive over her favorite toy. That's a bad habit that needs to be nipped in the bud right away. Small breed especially are prone to this - more so since people put off training them properly since they think it's "cute". There's nothing cute about aggression though. She needs to be trained.

Here's a bit on it http://www.thatmutt.com/2010/03/26/how-to-break-a-dogs-possessiveness/ and another you should read http://www.thatmutt.com/2008/12/12/my-dog-thinks-her-toy-is-her-baby/ but there's tons of pages out there for you. Just google "possessive dog"

Are there any daycare owners on here?

dreamee

I'm planning to open a daycare in August 2010. I'm thinking about buying a house in a commercial area. I want to start by having no more than 25 children from the ages of 6 wks-18 months. I think it would be cheaper since I wouldn't have to worry about so many toilets per child, food, playground equipment, field trips, etc. I would like to expand maybe after three years to include older children. Do anyone think this is a good way to start?

Answer
I definitely think your plan can work. Make sure you are doing as much research and gathering as much information as you can right now.

Infant care is in high demand and many places only do preschool aged children and up. I don't know that it will be cheaper because infants usually require a higher ratio (one adult for every 4 infants is typical) while older children can be watched by fewer adults. However, you will be able to charge a lot more to watch infants than you could for older children.

Start saving your money now. The more money you have saved (and don't have to take out in loans) the better. If you are planning on opening a daycare in a low income area, you may also be able to get a grant. You need to research and apply for grants early. Start collecting baby equipment, toys, and books now. You won't want to buy everything new, but slowly collect it through garage sales, donations, etc. You have to do everything you can to keep your initial costs down (you can always upgrade later). Buying a house is a good idea (as long as you get a good deal and can afford the payments initially even without the daycare income).

Contact the agency that licenses programs in your state and get some initial feedback and information about what you are wanting to do so you can start the approval process. You will need one year of hard work to be able to open your doors.

Where can I find replacement blocks for a Fisher-Price toy?

natashaier

I recently bought my daughter a Fisher-Price Stack 'n Surprise Blocks Songs 'n Smiles Sillytown. I got it on sale at Toys R Us about a month ago for $25. My husband brought it to his mom's house for our daughter to play with while she stayed over there for a couple hours, and her cousin took all of the pieces to his house and lost them. She now only has 3 blocks left! The cheapest price I found for this toy was $68 on amazon, and all I need is a couple of blocks. I checked ebay, nothing! This toy is completely out of stock everywhere and probably discontinued! Will I be able to find replacement blocks anywhere??

Answer
Yes the set was discontinued in 2010. If you visit the Fisher Price web page for this particular toy, on the right hand side, there will be a shopping cart. Select United States in the drop down menu. http://service.mattel.com/us/product_detail.asp?id=T3174&Ntt=T3174&Pn=1&Brand=Fisher-Price+Infant+Toys&Cat=Stack+'n+Surprise+Blocks

Then on the shopping page, select Baby Gear under Fisher Price. Then select Infant Toys. Then select Other Infant Toys. Then select Stack N Surprise Blocks Peek A Boo Choo Choo. You can purchase replacement blocks that are compatible with all Stack N Surprise toys. They run $9 a set. Hopefully this direct link will work, but if not, I hope my directions above explain how to get there. https://store.mattel.com/CatalogBrowser.aspx?cmd=local&cat=140&sec=9761

treat any pain, let her chew on toys or suck on an ice cube covered in a cloth, wash all hands well, keep her nose clean with the bulb syringe & saline drops, and follow up with the pediatrician.

Infant Teething right?

Kelli - Mo

My little four-month old has two white lumps on his lower gums and his gums are slightly swollen. Obviously I believe he's getting in his first little teeth. He's been screaming, drooling, has a ever so slight fever, has been chewing on his hands (and everyone else's hands he comes in contact with), etc. This sounds like teething, right?

So I've tried frozen bananas in a mesh feeder, teething tablets, cold water, and teething toys. Nothing has really seemed to help much. Any other ideas to help relieve pain a little? And has anyone else has children get teeth this young?

Thanks in advance!
I'm allergic to tylenol (I know, sucks right?). So we're not allowed to give him acetaminophen until he's more than 1 year old - just in case he's allergic as well.

Answer
My son is 5 months old and just got his bottom tooth. He has been teething for the past two months tho. It could be months from now until your little one's tooth actually breaks through. The only difference I noticed when it was actually about to break through was diarhhea. You can try a cold, frozen washcloth or towel. When my son was in a lot of pain, mostly at night when lying down when he couldnt get comfortable, I would give him tylenol...not all the time...only when it got really bad, for his sake. but you just have to ride it out, keep trying everything and if nothing works tylenol is the last resort. The first tooth is always the worst!

Photogra-m

My baby girl is almost 2 months - i need something to occupy her later on - some kind of activity play center toy - something great with lights and music _ I've been window shopping and dont see much that i like - What do you parents out there recommend -What toys does your baby like??
What about activity mats or something that will promote sitting up and crawling??
And also looking for toys I can attatch to her swing (since her swing does not play music or have lights- a toy with light & music thats attatchble - where can I find one??

Answer
My kids LOVED the peek-a-boo blocks from Fisher Price. It is also good for development for them to learn how to put things in and take things out. They have a shape sorter from peek-a-boo blocks. It has different shapes and each block has something new inside. There are SO many different accessories that you can get with the Peek-a-boo blocks. toysrus.com has a great way to select that type of thing. You select the age, and then you select the type of toys. You want to find cause and effect toys, early development, and sights and sounds. You can look at all those categories there, or just type whatever type of toy into a search engine and it should pull up some options.

infant brain development?

chuck j

my wife and i are expecting our first child in feburary. my question is, what can we do to help develop her brain activity and things like her sences. I'm not a big fan of those education videos or movies but i won't totaly rule them out. does it really help or make a difference when they are so young, like new born to read to them or do whatever we can to help her along?

Answer
Children are not supposed to watch TV before the age of 2. Research shows that it can be detrimental to their development. So trust your instincts. I would read to your child, talk to her, sing to her. Tummy time is very important, it leads to earlier crawling. Make sure that when she starts playing, she has lots of open-ended toys. These are toys that can be used in many ways, like blocks, plastic food, stacking rings, etc. The "interactive" talking toys are overrated. It is better for you to interact with your child. They learn more from you.

Any suggestions for a good educational toy for a three yr old?

Kate

she has the LeapFrog Scribble and Write..

Answer
Anything made by Leap Frog- I love their products!

Arts and crafts supplies- crayons, fingerpaints, sidewalk chalk, blank paper and coloring sheets

musical instruments- harmonica, tambourine, maracas, cymbals, bells, CDs with lullabies and nursery rhymes and classical music on them.

Puzzles

Board games such as Chutes and Ladders

Card Games such as Memory

Bubbles, balls, balloons

Mega Blocks, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys

Slides, Swings, Trampoline, Sandbox (and beach toys), toys to play with in the bathtub or sink (kitchen utensils work well).

Sports equipment- toddler basketball, baseball/softball, etc.

Refrigerator Magnets (alphabet and numerical)

Magnifying Glass, Critter Cage

DVDs- Leap Frog makes some educational DVDs as well

Computer software and/or websites- I have a three year old daughter who likes JumpStart. We also visit BrainQuest, Starfall and other websites.

Wagon

Dress up (stock up after halloween- various wigs, hats, facepaints, shoes, costume jewelry, etc.)

BOOKS! The look and find books are great, Books A Million has a big selection of them (some specifially for toddlers with more durable pages). Barnes & Noble has a great selection of DK Baby books, which are great for infants and toddlers. Traditional storybooks are great. Read to them, ask them questions such as how would that make them feel, what they think will happen next and my 3 year old likes to "retell" the story to me (an early reading skill).

Games such as Simon Says, I Spy, etc.- no toy required.

Instead of buying a toy, try spending that money on an activity instead. A month of Gymboree/Little Gym or gymnastics, dance, etc. Trip and/or membership to the aquarium, zoo, children's museum.

There are free activities, as well. Most libraries and/or book stores have a weekly story time.

Pl suggest toys or activities for an 8 month boy?

vs2008

My son will turn 8 months old in a few days. He has had a bouncy chair, play mat, books and variety of soft toys at home. He also likes to play with cell phone and TV remote as well as being shown colorful books. He has a jumperoo and lots of toys at the daycare. I am wondering if I should get a jumperoo for the weekend (at home). Does he need a swing?
What other toys would be stimulating for him for the coming months and year. If you have a suggestion, do let me know. My son likes playing with us, so I and my husband spend a lot of time going out for walks, swinging him around, singing and reading him books. What else should be fun for him?
Any suggestions you may have are welcome.
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.

Answer
Blow bubbles.

Balls (one of those tiny plastic pools and some ball pit balls (you can buy them at Wal Mart) is inexpensive and fun!

A swing, but not the infant kind (he is probably outgrowing that by now). My 6 month old LOVES to swing- we have the Little Tikes kind (we have a dolphin that is in like-new condition and we got it for our oldest child's first birthday, and she is almost 13 now) that looks like a dolphin. They also have airplane ones and ones that are not shaped but just as durable.

Look at One Step Ahead (dot com) and request a catalog. They have an indoor swing that you can hang in a doorframe like you do a Johnny Jumper. They have other indoor swings/slides and toys for infants.

My son will be 8 months old the day after Christmas, and I am getting him something from Toys R Us that looks like a shopping cart. He can push it around like a walker, but the top, front and sides have different activities such as a bead maze.

Play games such as Peek-A-Boo and do motions such as Itsy Bitsy Spider.

I recommend music- I love the Cedarmont Kids cds (they have lullabies, nursery rhymes, songs for babies, toddlers and older children. They also have Christmas music). I also have the Build Your Baby's Brain cds which I like (classical music) and my babies have liked as well.

Get one of those baby proof picture albums and put pictures in of various loved ones- you, dad, grandparents, etc.

A non-breakable mirror.

A wagon is my most recommended gift suggestion. Even my 12 year old and 10 year olds still play with our various wagons. You can pull your son now, later he can use it to pull his toys (or younger siblings!), and they come in handy when going to the park or beach to haul the necessities.

My son is on top of the growth chart...?

Coltons mo

The doctor told me my 10 1/2 month old is on top of the growth chart and is bigger then most kids his age. He's not concerned about his weight or anything though.

My son hasnt started crawling, walking, or pulling himself onto things. Could this be why? Because he's bigger? Should I be concerned about him not crawling yet? Or concerned about anything?

Answer
He is a late crawler, but not yet late on walking / cruising.

Big heads make babies walk later. But big babies can crawl just as soon as little babies.

People hate hearing this sometimes, but does he get lots of floor time? I mean on his back and on his belly on the floor. If a baby is worn constantly and also cosleeps they can do these things rather late do to limited practice and motivation. It isn't only do to being worn. Too much time in swings, jumpers, exersaucers etc. is also going to delay these things. They are seeing this more and more with infants as there are more "riding" type toys and more people wearing babies as well.

When a baby is laying down on their own (mom can watch close by of course!) is when they learn these skills.

But regardless, your boy is just a bit behind on the crawling, and just not ahead on cruising. Give him lots of floor time, and put a favorite toy just out of his reach.

What all do I need for baby?

Q. What all do I need exactly? So far I have a baby bath and a diaper bag. I've picked out a Pack-N-Play with a bassinet (I'm moving in January so I'll be getting a crib after the move. It'll just make things a little easier). I've also picked out a swing, bouncy seat, bottle warmer, baby carrier, baby moniter, diaper pail, and a wipes warmer. Clothes, diapers, wipes, pacifiers, bottles blankets, health care stuff I'm just going to get in the store (easier than looking online.) I also have a travel system (stroller / car seat) picked out. Is there anything I'm missing?

My mom will be giving me her breast pump that she used so I don't have to purchase one :)
Also... What brand of diapers and wipes do you recommend?

Answer
-breast feeding supplies-storage, nursing pads, creams, a nursing bra for you
-towels and rags for baby
-mittens and hats and socks
-cloth diapers for burping
-baby laundry detergent
-a mesh laundry bag (delicates bag) for small baby items such as socks, mittens, bibs, etc. keeps them together in the wash so nothing gets lost or stuck under the agitator
-car seat accessories- head support, strap covers (so the straps don't rub the neck)
-bottle cooler to keep bottles cold on the go (like if you make one while you're out and baby doesn't finish it), they have single ones that come with an ice pack
-waterproof pads/sheet savers to put in pack n play to protect from leaks and spit up or protect surfaces (bed, floor) when changing baby
-you may want to have a small thing of formula on hand, just in case you need it. my daughter had jaundice really bad and had to be on formula full time even though I had planned to breast feed. We had a can at home, so we didn't have to run out and get some the first few days
-travel wipes case for diaper bag
-play gym for baby to lay on and look at
-some kind of musical toy, my daughter goes to sleep really well if we wind up her musical giraffe or turn on the piano (precious planet kick n play piano, plays for a while and has lights) or your pack n play may have a musical attachment

I prefer Luvs and Pampers diapers because my baby has thin legs and the legs on these fit better. Huggies are good, but the leg holes are to big for my little girl. My daughter is 6 weeks old and is just now almost to big for newborn diapers. It all depends on the baby. Buy a variety of sizes of diapers, you can always take them back.
I like huggies wipes and pampers wipes so far, but I haven't tried a bunch of different ones. Parent's Choice (Walmart brand) are good, except the refill packs don't like to "feed" through the hole in our warmer like they are supposed to.
