what toys can i buy for an infant boy (less than 10 mos)?

trishkabob

they need to be able to help him develop socially......

Answer
buy toys that are entertaining yet educational. infant boys are easily distracted so get toys that will keep his eyes on the person holding it. don't get a toy that is too complicated that is too much work for a baby to understand get a simple fun toy.

Which position should newborn baby boy or infant boy sleep?

myscreenna

on his stomach with his face sideways?
on his back with his face looking at ceiling?
on his back with his face looking at sides?
on his shoulder?

which position he sleeps matter?
why or why not?

How about when he is 1 year old?
2 years old?
3 years old?

How did your baby sleep?

Answer
It is very important that infants sleep on their back, with no extra pillows, blankets, toys, etc in the crib with them. Swaddle him or tuck a blanket around him to keep him warm, and have him sleep on his back. This is important until 1 year of age, as it has been shown to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by up to 50%. After that, go by what is most comfortable for your baby. But always think of safety- once your baby can roll over, he can roll off of a crib or changing table. Once he can stand, he could tip over a low crib rail. Here is a full list of tips from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia:

Place your baby on his/her back on a firm, tight-fitting mattress in a crib that meets current safety standards.
Remove pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, stuffed toys, and other soft products from the crib.
Consider using a sleeper as an alternative to blankets with no other covering.
If using a blanket, put your baby with his/her feet at the foot of the crib. Tuck a thin blanket around the crib mattress, only as far as the baby's chest.
Make sure your baby's head remains uncovered during sleep.
Do not place your baby on a waterbed, sofa, soft mattress, pillow, or other soft surface to sleep.

Answer
2 months: Smiling, cooing, batting at toys, starting to laugh, lifting head off floor, following objects with eyes, able to sit with support, blowing spit bubbles.
3 months: Having conversations (IE: I talk and she cooes back), the mini push up (lifting her arms and belly off the ground while holding her head up), grabbing toys, trying to EAT her toys (haha), rolling belly to back, back to belly, able to stand while holding onto my fingers, plays with her feet and sticks them in her mouth.

Add: remember all babies develop at their own pace!

Where should I buy gently used infant toys online?

Maitreyi

I am a proud new mother of a beautiful baby boy, and I am looking to purchase sencond hand toys at a very good price.

I've looked at e-bay but after shipping there is not much of a discount from store prices.

Any suggestions??

Thank You in advance!!

Answer
Anything online is going to have similar shipping cost. the best bet is to go look at second hand infant clothing stores. Try the yellow pages (or 411.com).
We have one in out town that lets us sell the cloths our children outgrew. We put them on consignment. As they sold, we got half of what they sold for, and we always spent it at the store purchasing more age appropriate toys and cloths that fit them.

Toys for infant?

cj2004

I need some ideas on toys for my son who is 4 1/2 months old. I stay at home with him and he gets lots of attention. But there are moments I need to do something. Like right now I've been trying to get ready to go to the store and he's just whining. He's in his exersaucer with a baby video in. Nothing keeps his attention for any length of time, even a few minutes. I know part of it is his age. Is there anything that has worked for anyone or am I just going to have to deal until he learns to play better with age (and when does that happen)?

Answer
Get the Baby Einstein Baby Mozart, Beethoven, etc. DVD or videos. My daughter is now 8 months, and she STILL will sit there for at least an hour and watch the pictures and listen to the music. It's AMAZING how much she loves it.

Also, LAMAZE toys are terrific, especially for children your sons age that are starting to play with toys more with their hands. They are very colorful, and normally make some sort of noise. You can get them at places like Babies R Us, Kohls, Toys R Us, etc.

Also, I got a vibrating rocker chair from Fischer Price that has a detachable toy arch. It has a cow/farm theme. She has loved that chair pretty much since birth. She naps in it, plays in it, and it's wonderful!!!

Finally, anything with a mirror in it. Look for activing chairs or gyms that have mirrored things on them. My baby now likes to have conversations with herself! lol!

Good luck!

Pl suggest toys or activities for an 8 month boy?

vs2008

My son will turn 8 months old in a few days. He has had a bouncy chair, play mat, books and variety of soft toys at home. He also likes to play with cell phone and TV remote as well as being shown colorful books. He has a jumperoo and lots of toys at the daycare. I am wondering if I should get a jumperoo for the weekend (at home). Does he need a swing?
What other toys would be stimulating for him for the coming months and year. If you have a suggestion, do let me know. My son likes playing with us, so I and my husband spend a lot of time going out for walks, swinging him around, singing and reading him books. What else should be fun for him?
Any suggestions you may have are welcome.
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.

Answer
Blow bubbles.

Balls (one of those tiny plastic pools and some ball pit balls (you can buy them at Wal Mart) is inexpensive and fun!

A swing, but not the infant kind (he is probably outgrowing that by now). My 6 month old LOVES to swing- we have the Little Tikes kind (we have a dolphin that is in like-new condition and we got it for our oldest child's first birthday, and she is almost 13 now) that looks like a dolphin. They also have airplane ones and ones that are not shaped but just as durable.

Look at One Step Ahead (dot com) and request a catalog. They have an indoor swing that you can hang in a doorframe like you do a Johnny Jumper. They have other indoor swings/slides and toys for infants.

My son will be 8 months old the day after Christmas, and I am getting him something from Toys R Us that looks like a shopping cart. He can push it around like a walker, but the top, front and sides have different activities such as a bead maze.

Play games such as Peek-A-Boo and do motions such as Itsy Bitsy Spider.

I recommend music- I love the Cedarmont Kids cds (they have lullabies, nursery rhymes, songs for babies, toddlers and older children. They also have Christmas music). I also have the Build Your Baby's Brain cds which I like (classical music) and my babies have liked as well.

Get one of those baby proof picture albums and put pictures in of various loved ones- you, dad, grandparents, etc.

A non-breakable mirror.

A wagon is my most recommended gift suggestion. Even my 12 year old and 10 year olds still play with our various wagons. You can pull your son now, later he can use it to pull his toys (or younger siblings!), and they come in handy when going to the park or beach to haul the necessities.

How do I work with autistic child in a pool??

Becky

I am a swimming instructor at the YMCA and was recently asked to teach special needs. The child that I am supposed to teach is autistic. I taught him before and it was very difficult, it took me about 5 minutes just to get him into the deep end from the kiddy part where he could just walk in and out. He doesn't respond or listen when I talk to him, in his own little world and likes to push me away and have nothing to do with me. I thought about asking the mom about how to communicate with him but she is Chinese and can barely speak English. I want to be able to help this child but how do I go about doing more than just floating on a noodle? I don't want to force him to do some things (jumping in, floating, front glides etc.) I asked my boss about what I should do with him and he said...just swim around, but that's hard to do for 40 minutes...
Any suggestions???!!!

Answer
I think its amazing that you got him in the deep end in 5 minutes. It took me 15 minutes to get my 4 y/o son out of the car today to go to the park! I would strongly suggest you not force anything as this is very counter productive and you want this child to trust you. Here are a couple of fun pool games I play with my son.

1. Have him throw floating pool toys into the pool. You hold all the toys in a basket and hand him the toys one by one to throw in. After a few tries, see if you can count 1-2-3 and say go before he throws it in.

2. Sit on the side of the pool together and kick you legs to spread the toys around.

3. Once all the toys are floating around use a noodle under his arms to support him and encourage him to kick his legs. Use really good boat sounds to drive him around the pool and have him pick up each toy and then guide him back to the side. Pick up each toy and bring it to the side one by one so he can understand how you are cleaning up. If he is able, have him point out toys that need to be picked up.

4. Blow bubbles in the water. Put a noodle around you and around him. Float in the deep end together and try to get him to blow bubbles in the water with you.

5. Practice floating like stars on his back.

6. Hold him in your arms and jump up and down to make floating boats float on waves.

Go slowly. He needs to know he can trust you and you are not going to expect the impossible from him. Take baby steps and when you see what he can accomplish go a little further.
Take a look at the programs for moms/infants. See what they do and incorporate some of that into your class.

Best of luck and thanks for taking on such a challenging class.

What baby equipment (so to speak) is worth spending a lot on, and what's not worth spending $ on?

Do your ow

Stroller?
Crib?
Infant car seat?
Diaper bag?
Books?
Cloth diapers?
Toys?
Clothes?
Etc, etc, etc?

Answer
Stroller? I honestly used mine about 4 times, the big huge one that came with the carseat- I held him or used a sling. Plus the big ones that come with a carseat are huge-they take up my whole trunk of the car!

Crib? I got one, but it's rarely used since we decided to cosleep-I change his diaper on it but that's about it.

Infant car seat? read the reviews and buy the best-you can't put a price on safety.

Diaper bag? never bought one, I got a free one at the hospital with formula samples (which I threw out). Still using it 16 months later!

Books? you mean books about raising a baby? If you have the internet you can get ideas from that.

Cloth diapers? I use these! The average savings is $2000 for the first child. Check out www.diaperpin.com and www.diaperjungle.com for different types-they aren't rubber pants and pins anymore!

Toys? you are the biggest source of entertainment for your baby. Plus people always buy your baby toys-I think I've bought a few things here and there-I like wooden toys-they last a lot longer than plastic.

Clothes? They grow so fast, so don't stock up on newborn clothes! Buy them secondhand, I mostly used onesies when we were home.

Other things to consider are playmats, a playpen if you need to run in the other room and want to keep baby out of stuff, nail clippers, booger suckers, receiving blankets for swaddling, washcloths, lotions, soap.

Things I have that I rarely used:baby monitor since we coslept, diaper genie since you can't put cloth in there, the diaper stacker that hangs off the crib.

how much to spend on infant car seat?

Peqo

hi,
we are having twin babies this coming summer and I am looking at different car seats. I just learned that they will need an infant car seat and a car seat for when they are more than 30 lbs or so.

I have been looking on amazon for ones that have the best ratings etc...

is this a normal range?

249.99 for one infant car seat ...... that will be about $500 for the twins
http://www.amazon.com/Graco-Infant-SafeSeat-Step-Nectar/dp/B0012IUU3Q/ref=sr_1_109?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1295284795&sr=1-109

179.99 for one older baby car seat.....that will be about $360 for the twins.
http://www.amazon.com/Graco-Nautilus-Car-Seat-Dori/dp/B002GWVDLU/ref=sr_1_178?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1295284068&sr=1-178

are we really looking to spend over $800 on just car gear :( None of our friends have small babies who are ready to give away theirs. And since this is our first time as parents, I'm sure you can imagine we want to be really safe.
But I just want to make sure this is a normal price range.

any suggestions for buying gear for twin babies?

thank you

Answer
Welcome to the world of twins!

With the infant carrier, you can buy 2 seats and than an extra 2 bases if you need to have them in multiple cars. Some people will tell you to just get a convertible seat and skip the carrier, but I disagree - it is easier with a carrier and twins frequently run a bit smaller and just "fit' better in the carrier. Because our twins were small - 5 lbs 1 oz and 5 lbs 4 oz, they had to pass a "car seat test" at the hospital before we could take them. Basically, they fit them in the seat and monitor their oxygen levels for an hour. Our daughter failed and had to be retested - we almost had to go out and buy a "car bed" to take her home in. There is no way they would have been able to sit in a convertible seat at that size and be released from the hospital. Just because a convertible seat is rated for 5 lbs and up does not mean it is the right choice from birth.

Graco is a good brand and you can get the infant carriers for as low as $100 at Babies R Us ($200 for two and then you need to decide whether you need the extra bases).

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4043732

When they outgrow it, you can switch to a convertible seat - we invested in the Britax Marthons, pricey but worth it to us as they will be in it for years. We got 4 - 2 for my car and 2 for my husbands as it varies as to who picks them up from daycare etc . . .

Honestly? Car Seats are all safety checked and follow the same standards set by the government - some have additional side impact protection - otherwise it is just padding, ease of use etc . . .

Go to Babies R Us - try them out in your car (they will let you check them for fit) and go from there. Shop online - you will find better deals.

I also recommend that you call the local police station / fire department - they can assist you with getting the seats installed, but I would also ask them about car seat programs. Our town had a deal with Graco. If you brought them an old seat, they would recycle it and replace it with a new one. We got our infant carriers for free through this program as friends and family donated their old seats for us to trade in. It made investing in nicer convertible seats for later easier.

You should also check to see if there are any Parents of Twins groups in your area - a lot of times, they have tag sales etc . . . I am not suggesting buying a used car seat. Car seats and cribs are what you invest in . . . but on a tight budget, it is a great way to get a good double stroller, clothes, toys etc . . .

Hope this helps!

my 9 and half month old son.... is about 22LB and he hates his car seat?

gisele_hom

what kind of car seat/bran name/style do you segest..please help

Answer
First off, don't ever put any hard toys on a baby's seat, nor a TV! OUCH in a crash or even a speed bump. My first question would be how reclined is he? If he is still in an infant carrier, you can't change the 45 degree recline angle, but in a rear facing convertible car seat, you can adjust it a little bit. Newborns must have a 45 degree angle recline to prevent their head falling forward and closing off their airway, but an older baby only needs 30-45 degrees recline. He may want to be able to see more than he can right now. So I'd look into that first off. Put some static clings on the rear windshield and back side windows to give him something to look at. Play music for kids, or better yet, talk and sing to him. He may just not like his seat, he may be bored, he may be scared b/c he can't see you.

Put one of those mirrors so you can see him. I had a mirror securely attached (with several safety pins to make sure it would not become a projectile in an accident) to the rear headrest so he could see himself, also, I put on of those baby view mirrors below my rear view mirror so I could see his reflection in his mirror in my mirror without turning around while driving (which isn't safe!) You may have to try several different models of mirrors (for his headrest) until you find one that works securely with your car.

He may really just not like car rides right now. In that case, minimize travelling for a little bit till he gets over it, which he soon will! Aim to travel at his best times of the day, morning for most babies, only go when he's eaten, well-rested, and in a good mood. It will make the trip easier for both of you.

Please DON'T get the Safety1st 3-in-1/Cosco Alpha Omega/Eddie Bauer 3-in1 seats. These are all the same company - same seat, just different covers. They stink. Hard to install, b/c of narrow belt paths. Ever tried to wash a skinny cup by hand? Now imagine that skinny cup with pointy edges. That's what putting your hand through these to install them is like. AND they have too short a shell to really go to 40lbs. And they do not make good boosters. Also, most kids have to use boosters until they're at least 8 years old. Car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, so no matter what they say it is NOT the last seat you'll ever need to buy. Not a good choice.

If you think padding might help, some great choices (and best bang for your buck, too!) are:
The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17", harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn't have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. It's one of only 2 seats that does this (The Britax Boulevard is the other, I believE), and it has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. No more tugging straps to tighten them either. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. As a major bonus, it can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode. Awesome for kids who still sleep in the car. I LOVE THIS SEAT! LOL My son, who is too big for every other car seat at Walmart has the same amount of room in this as the Britax Marathon.

The Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathalon (These 3 are the same seat, just different variances of luxury additions, with the Marathon being the cheapest base model) can be found for regular price of $269, and on sale at Albee Baby online for $209-$219. The Marathon a wide open easy to route belt path, which makes using it correctly a lot easier, as do the built in lockoffs, which mean you never again have to use a locking clip. I can get it into 4 different vehicles in under 2 minutes. Because of the way the base is made, it fits in most cars. And, it is worth the money, b/c it lasts usually twice as long as most other car seats (all car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture) lasting a baby till they are 5-6 years old, where most at Walmart will only last till 2-4 years old. Rear faces to 33lbs, then forward to 65lbs. and top slots 17inches tall, lasts most kids to ages 5-6 years old.

Whatever you do, don't turn him forward facing! It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (see sources) that ALL babies stay rear facing as long as possible, up to the weight/height limits of their seat. Most seats go to 30lbs rear facing, some go higher, check your manual. They are too tall for an infant carrier when the head is within an inch of the top of the shell. Too tall for most convertible seats when their ears reach the top of the seat. Has nothing to do with how long their legs are! There isn't a single documented case of a child breaking their legs b/c they were rear facing in an accident. There are, however, lots of cases where children have been killed and seriously injured where a rear facing seat would have protected them better. They are safest rear facing b/c their bones have not yet completed the ossification process that bonds/hardens them like adults. They need the bracing support that a rear facing seat offers to withstand a crash. 20lbs AND 1 year is the bare minimum as far as the law is concerned, but the law is the bare minimum of safety, and who wants to do the bare minimum for their child? A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 4 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age. A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.

Disney Toy Story?

Q. I need a detailed synoposis of the first five minutes of Toy Story. Anyone love that movie enough to remember ?

Yes, I would watch it if I could but I'm at school.

Answer
The story begins with a boy named Andy playing with his toys, such as a Mr. Potato Head, a plastic dinosaur toy, and his favorite toy, Woody, a cowboy toy. He takes Woody into the living room and plays with him some more, with a short interruption talking to his mom about his birthday party later that day and the upcoming move to a new house. After playing with Woody, Andy starts helping his mom by carrying his baby sister to her. While he is gone, all the toys come to life.

The human party makes all the toys extremely nervous, wondering if Andy will get a toy that will replace them--especially with the news that the family will be moving soon. Woody sends the small green soldiers downstairs to spy on the party. At the end of the party, Andy's mom pulls out a surprise gift from a nearby closet, which turns out to be a Buzz Lightyear action figure. Buzz does not seem to be aware that he is a piece of plastic, believing himself to be a real space ranger, on a mission to save the universe from Evil Emperor Zurg. The other toys take to him immediately, being impressed by his many features. Only Woody is unconvinced, showing jealousy towards Buzz, who might replace him as Andy's favorite toy.

Andy is given a surprise trip to his favorite restaurant: Pizza Planet. However, he can take only one toy with him. Knowing this, Woody tries to shove Buzz behind Andy's dresser, but instead inadvertently knocks him out the window. When the other toys learn of Woody's actions, they think he has turned into a killer. They try to attack him without even giving him a chance to explain, but he is rescued when Andy, unable to find Buzz, takes Woody on the trip. At a stop at a Dinoco gas station for gas, Woody finds that Buzz grabbed ahold of the family's minivan and is with them. Woody tries to apologize but Buzz wouldn't listen and threw the first punch. The two begin a fist fight, knocking each other out of the minivan, and are left behind when it drives away. Woody convinces Buzz to hitch a lift on a Pizza Planet truck, in order to return to Andy.

Woody finds Andy there, but Buzz, still believing he is a real space ranger, climbs into a toy crane game, thinking it is a spaceship that will take him to his rival's location. Woody goes in after him, but the two are eventually found by Sid Phillips, who lives next door to Andy and is known to torture and destroy toys for his own entertainment.

Left alone in Sid's room, Woody and Buzz come upon a group of mis-matched toys, the results of Sid's many "experiments." Woody and Buzz react in fear, thinking that the mis-matched toys are cannibals. Meanwhile at Andy's house, the toys continue to look for Buzz in the bushes. But when Andy and his mother come home, he notices that Woody is gone. The other toys wonder what has become of the two. Some are worried for both Buzz and Woody, while others express their hope that Woody has met a bad end. The next day, at Sid's house, Woody and Buzz, having been mistreated by Sid, (Sid managed to burn Woody's forehead with a magnifying glass) try to escape, only to run into Sid's maniac dog, Scud. Eventually getting out of Sid's room, Buzz comes upon a television where he sees a commercial for the Buzz Lightyear line of toys. Watching it, he realizes that Woody was right. He was a toy this whole time, not a space ranger. In one last desperate attempt to prove he is not a toy, Buzz attempts to fly out of a window by jumping from the guardrail of the stairs on the second floor, only to fall to the floor, losing his left arm in the process. He is then found by Sid's sister Hannah, who takes him and puts him with her tea party.

Woody finally finds Buzz in Hannah's room, dressed as "Mrs. Nesbitt" and attending a tea party. Woody formulates a plan of escape. The plan involved throwing a string of Christmas lights to the toys in Andy's room. Buzz is too depressed to care. When Woody throws the string of Christmas tree lights across the way to the toys in Andy's room, and the toys refuse to help him, thinking that it was Woody who yanked Buzz's arm off. Buzz refuses to back him up. The mixed-up toys then return and swarm over Buzz, to Woody's alarm. But it turns out they were only repairing him. Before Woody can make friends with them, however, Sid returns with his new acquisition: a firework rocket. He decides to blow up Buzz with it, but is stymied by rainfall.

Overnight, Woody and Buzz make amends, Woody helping Buzz come to terms with being a toy, and the two try to escape. Unfortunately Sid wakes up and takes Buzz out to blow him up, leaving Woody alone in the room. Of course, it was also when Andy and his family is going to move. Andy, still depressed to lose Woody and Buzz, finds only the cardboard spaceship of Buzz and his cowboy hat. Woody calls out to the mixed-up toys to tell them a plan to escape. After a daring escape through the house and past Scud, Woody and the other toys end up in the backyard with Sid. They decide to break the "rules" by allowing Sid to see that they can move on their own. Woody even speaks to him through his voicebox, telling him that his toys are sick of being tortured, then with his own voice tells him to "play nice." This freaks Sid out and he runs screaming into the house, with a now acquired fear of toys. His sister then frightens him with her toy doll.

Now freed from Sid, Woody and Buzz attempt to catch Andy's moving van just as it is pulling away from the house. After saying farewell to the mixed-up toys, a harrowing chase follows, with Scud chasing them and Andy's toys not helping, since they still believe Woody intentionally got rid of Buzz. Luckily, they get rid of Scud and let the toys believe in Woody to see that he is helping Buzz. Eventually, with the help of R/C, Andy's remote control car, and strategic use of Sid's rocket, Woody and Buzz return to Andy, whose mother thinks they were in the car all along.

At Christmas, we see a scene similar to the birthday party, with the toys less worried about the new ones, save a slightly nervous Buzz. Mr. Potato Head is pleased to learn that Andy's baby sister has been given a Mrs. Potato Head. When discussing being replaced by a new toy, like Woody was almost replaced by Buzz, Woody poses the question to Buzz, "What could Andy possibly get that is worse than you?" The answer comes in the form of Andy's first present, when a dog's bark is heard (In Toy Story 2, it is revealed that his name is Buster).

Learn to walk Baby toys?

Mrs. Z plu

I am looking for some type of walking toy that Dane can use. Nothing that gets moving really fast though because I don't want it to slip out from under him.

He has take to walking our kitchen chairs and it is making me SO nervous!

What have you used for your children? I plan on going tonight to get something.
No not a walker. Some type of push toy that he can walk with.

Does anybody ever wonder about autism in their infant?

jennifer m

I have a 13 month old boy. He is very healthy and happy. I always have this fear inside me about him having autism. As far as the milestones go he is right on track, but having friends with autistic children I often worry. It is becoming so common among children. What are some good signs? I read that turning wheels on cars is one, which my son does all the time. Does anyone elses infant do this, or display any signs of something you worry about?

Answer
Our son has autism and was diagnosed at 2.5 years.
The signs he had when he was a baby:
-Not making eye contact.
-Glaring at us, not smiling back when we smiled at him.
-Temper tantrums- starting early on. They were awful from the time he was 9 months old. At 13 months, he would tantrum for over an hour- AN HOUR...no matter what we did we could not get him "off" of what he was fixated on.
-No babbling at all.
-Lack of speech- he started to say mama at 12 months and then that was it until he turned 2.5 years.
-Aversions to change and to new situations. Taking him to the mall at X-Mas would set him off because of all the lights, people, etc. He was overstimulated. We attributed this to him having stranger anxiety.

Wheels on cars: our son's first fascination was with cars and trucks. If it had wheels, he was amazed. From the time he was about 15 months old, he was lining up his toys. I would play with him and purposely turn one of his cars in the wrong direction and he would see it after a time, and change it. He studied his cars and trucks. When he was 3, his fascination became Tornado's. Then, dinosaurs. We are on Lego's right now. He is building these amazing Lego cities.

The good news: Turning wheels on cars is normal. Our baby does this, and it's to see how they work. She is not autistic at all. There is a 10 year age gap between the 2 children. It's like starting over in every way possible because she doesn't have outrageous tantrums. If we take something away, we hand her something else (as we did with him) and she is fine. He was not.

He is 11 now and a delight.

I watched very carefully when she was younger and worried, but she is hitting all of her milestones on time. She is talking in 2 word sentences now- Hi daddy, Hi kitty, etc. She says, "See it..." she has a huge vocabulary. She is 16 months old now.

I would try not to worry as much. Enjoy your baby.

We knew something was wrong with our son when he was a baby. I couldn't get anyone to listen: 11 years ago, autism was considered rare. We were referred to a therapist because of his tantrums and the lack of speech. He was diagnosed at 2 years and 3 months old and started OT, PT, speech, and play therapy at that time, so he is doing well. He is mainstreamed in the regular classroom with an aide for him.

We tested his IQ at 8 years of age- and he tested out at 130. I thought, "Ok, that is pretty good...". Then I was told most adults top out between 100 and 120- and he was only 8! I cannot answer his questions anymore- they are very high level and they are sometimes hypothetical without an answer. He demands an answer: so we spend a lot of time googling. He reads college textbooks in science for enjoyment but cannot focus on say a Harry Potter book. He is an amazing kid!

Good luck to you!

infant autism signs?

mellany t

my son is 10 months old and shows these signs that worry my husband and i ..help! says dada, babbles, but could go for hours without saying anything. makes eye contact but for short periods at a time, shows sign to pain, but will hit his head or something similar sometimes and doesn't even react. likes to tap his fingers on his left hand, has no problem being held by others and usually shows no emotion when they are with them. things that make me think he doesn't have it:he responds to his name 90% of the time if he isn't side tracked, interacts with mommy and daddy great, laughs, smiles, but not always. objects when we leave the room or take a toy away, feeds himself finger foods, does not mind change in activity, likes to be out of the house, fussier at home, i think he gets bored. he still loves ceiling fans, i guess that is supposed to be a worry, i don't know, are we being too cautious? he isn't really a cuddler, but will lay on your shoulder if he's tired....help!

Answer
As the parent of a child with autism who was not diagnosed until age 5 1/2, let me tell you this: trust your instincts. If you feel he may have autism, get him screened by a GOOD developmental pediatrician. You can start with your regular pediatrician (like we did) but were told things like, "Boys develop slower" and "He's just fine" even though I knew in my hear there was something amiss.

There is a project called FirstSigns. Below are a couple of developmental milestones to look for from their site:

At 9 Months:

Smile and laugh while looking at you?
Exchange back-and-forth smiles, loving faces, and other expressions with you?
Exchange back-and-forth sounds with you?
Exchange back-and-forth gestures with you, such as giving, taking, and reaching?

At 12 Months:

Use a few gestures, one after another, to get needs met, like giving, showing, reaching, waving, and pointing?
Play peek-a-boo, patty cake, or other social games?
Make sounds, like âma,â âba,â âna,â âda,â and âga?â
Turn to the person speaking when his/her name is called?

Their web site is www.firstsigns.org. I don't necessarily agree with their listing as my son hit all those milestones just fine. You need to err on the side of caution because early intervention is the key to helping these kids. And what if you're wrong? So what?!? The early intervention is not harmful to any child that does not have autism or another disability. In other words, it can't hurt.

Please also check out the DSM-IV for autism. In California, there is a law called Title 5 Section 3030 of the California Education Code for autistic-like behaviors. Both might help you identify warning signs. This is a Word document so that you may insert whatever signs you see in the appropriate place, print it out and take it to the developmental pediatrician. The document is located here on our web site: http://www.valleysnafu.com/SAMPLE%20DSM.wps.doc

If your son does have an Autism Spectrum Disorder, he will need Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and Verbal Behavior (VB or AVB) and probably Theory of Mind Training (TOM). ABA comes first and is being administered to children younger and younger....even your son's age. To allay some of your worries, I have seen numerous children, enter Kindergarten indistinguishable from their peers, with early intervention. My son did not receive intervention until he was 6 years old and although he is doing very well (in a regular ed classroom at grade level, minimal behaviors), treatment has taken a lot longer than the younger kiddos I've seen.

I have alos included a link for Yellow Pages for Kids. It might help you locate a developmental pediatrician or other professional as well as support groups so you can chat with other moms.

Trust your instincts! Err on the side of caution! Email me anytime!

What is the bst way to clean infants toys after they have been sick?

Lalana

My baby has RSV and I need to disinfect his toys soon. I know I can throw the stuffed animals in pillow case and wash them but what about all the other stuff?

Answer
Put some bleach in a bath tub full of water and dunk them in. The ones with batteries, just give them a wipe down. I understand completely why you want to get those germs out! My nephew had RSV and did breathing treatments and took steroids to get better. I remember him being sick for weeks. Poor thing! I hope your baby gets better soon. You should think about an air purifier like the ones Rainbow has. Those are great.

What's the best way to clean/disinfect a stuffed toy bought at a yard sale, before giving it to my infant?

Answer
I always wash them in the washer

What kind of things do you add to your baby registry?

Q. I have no idea where to begin.. or end, for that matter.

Answer
I went to babies r us and Target. At first I wasn't going to go to babies r us, but it is amazing how much more they have than Target.

First do not register for any cute clothes. That is what most people will buy you so why register and get more outfits than you will know what to do with.

Here are some things for your registry

Bottles -even if you are breastfeeding put dowm some bottles just in case.
Bottle brush cleaner
Bottle drying rack
Swing
play mat
some toys
infant tub
hooded towels
washclothes
baby bath soap- johnsons or aveeno - I love aveeno
diapers- i wouldn't put tons of size 1 or 2 (maybe 2 boxes of each and I never bought newborn diapers)
wipes
stroller and carseat- put down for an extra base if you have more than one car
blankets- i got tons of these but you never know if you will get a lot or not
socks
sleepers, gowns
onesies ( 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months
high chair ( personally I love the Fisher Price Space Saver)
crib
changing table not a necessity but I love mine for changing and storage
thermometer
baby medicine like mylicon drops, fever reducer

That is all I can think of for now. Good luck

Can a baby have a Webkinz as a gift? I know it says 3 and up, but isn't that just bc of the internet stuff?

BR

As far as the actual physical toy, is it okay to give it to someone at a baby shower?

Answer
I would not give a webkinz as a baby shower gift. First, a baby could choke on some of the smaller parts, eyes, nose, ribbons, etc. Plus in another 6 or 7 years when the baby is old enough to play on a computer, webkinz world might not even be there. I hope it will still be there, but you never know.
How about getting some t-shirts, onesies, or pajamas that are a bit bigger than newborn, like the 6-9 month size? That way when the baby outgrows all the infant clothes everyone else will give the mom, there will still be new clothes that will fit!

Infants and teething?

Infant Teething right?

Kelli - Mo

My little four-month old has two white lumps on his lower gums and his gums are slightly swollen. Obviously I believe he's getting in his first little teeth. He's been screaming, drooling, has a ever so slight fever, has been chewing on his hands (and everyone else's hands he comes in contact with), etc. This sounds like teething, right?

So I've tried frozen bananas in a mesh feeder, teething tablets, cold water, and teething toys. Nothing has really seemed to help much. Any other ideas to help relieve pain a little? And has anyone else has children get teeth this young?

Thanks in advance!
I'm allergic to tylenol (I know, sucks right?). So we're not allowed to give him acetaminophen until he's more than 1 year old - just in case he's allergic as well.

Answer
My son is 5 months old and just got his bottom tooth. He has been teething for the past two months tho. It could be months from now until your little one's tooth actually breaks through. The only difference I noticed when it was actually about to break through was diarhhea. You can try a cold, frozen washcloth or towel. When my son was in a lot of pain, mostly at night when lying down when he couldnt get comfortable, I would give him tylenol...not all the time...only when it got really bad, for his sake. but you just have to ride it out, keep trying everything and if nothing works tylenol is the last resort. The first tooth is always the worst!

Space saving ideas for studio apt? Baby due Feb 2012?

Scrapper

My BF and I live in a studio apt (approx 500 sf) - one large open room. I've determined a place to put a pack-n-play for the baby to sleep in which contains a built in changing station, however, in doing so I've had to rearrange the living room and nothing works. Storage space savings ideas? We'd like to have a small portable swing for the baby as well as one of the jungle gym. Anyone been in this situation and came up with some great ideas?
Unfortunately the lease to the apartment isn't up until Jan 31st and I'm due within 2weeks of that. We decided it would be best to not add the stress of moving right at that time.

We are adding risers under the bed to add some storage space under the bed, as well as condensing out of date clothing to the vacuum sealed storage bags. We are looking into a new microwave cart with a hutch for storage of baby bottles, etc in the kitchen.

For the baby jungle gym - one of the small floor play areas for the baby to lay on and be stimulated with the colorful toys. We are aware of course that at some point, we'll need to also get items when the baby is old enough to sit up and trying to walk - but are looking into moving one year after the baby is born.
To K - I ABHOR when people suggest just letting a baby sleep with you ... mainly for the reason that I personally know someone that lost a child that suffocated that way. My child will be in their own bed (chose a pack-n-play over a crib to save space) and as for the 'other' items - we will manage to give up some of our comforts for our child to have stimulation outside of mommy/daddy's arms. I was asking for space saving ideas - not to be criticized for wanting to make our apartment more suitable for a baby.

Answer
I don't know what kind of budget you have but Ikea has a huge selection of storage and many that have doors so you can hide stuff out of sight! Consider altering uses of things - a wardrobe system for a bedroom could be placed in a family area and offer you a place to hide baby things but look nice. You can also buy pretty inexpensive vinyl ottomans at Walmart that have tops that lift off and storage inside. A bonus with those is that they are soft for when baby starts pulling up on things. Think about maybe getting a tall bookcase (Expedit unit at Ikea) but turning in on it's side like a bench. You can throw some pillows on the top for extra seating and put baskets in each shelf to store toys or baby stuff (blankets, wash cloths, diaper changing needs, etc). In other words, if you just look for things that you can use to hide some of the baby stuff you can certainly manage to live in one room and not look like your living in a nursery.

You may want to reconsider the pack n play and get an inexpensive crib. I say this because a pack n play is really an occasional bed once the bassinet phase (first 8-10 weeks - may be less if you have a big baby) is over and then the baby will be sleeping on a very tiny board and very low to the ground. They are not designed as a crib replacement. If you really want to go with a pack n play for the diaper changing feature be sure to find out the weight limit of the changer and how it works. Most of them only go to 15lbs which could be a very short time if you have a big baby. My baby had reached the bassinet/changer limit by 8 weeks! Buy one that has a hinged changer instead of the lift off type. When you are holding a baby in one hand it is not possible to lift off the changer with the other! I had the one in the link below because it was inexpensive and the changer was on hinges.

Also, some babies hate swings. You may get more use out of a chair that goes from newborn to toddler just to get more use out of it. I borrowed a swing from a friend and my son only used it a handful of times. And I live in a house and was frustrated with how much space it took up.

And as far as a change table goes, I'd scrap the idea all together and go with a crib. Or, if you already have a dresser you can buy a pad for the top and use that for a while. I did that until my son became too squirmy and I've been changing him on the floor every since. The floor is easy and baby can't fall off the floor! If you don't already have a dresser you can use I would just buy a diaper caddy and use the floor. Save that space as you don't need it and you can use almost any surface to change a diaper - you will learn that fast when out and about!

My advice is to just use what budget you have to buy the absolute least amount of large baby things and the most amount of living room/bedroom things with drawers and doors so you can manage the baby mess! An infant has a lot of small stuff that is needed but easily stored away and if you cut out some big things and ask friends what the did and didn't use you can get by with very little and keep you space in order.

Good luck and congrats on the baby! :)

Please help.. My 14 months old daughter is delayed, autism?

Eyecandy77

My 14 months old daughter is delayed in her social skills and fine motor skills. She is not waiving, not clapping, not pointing, not self feeding. She will sometimes show where my eyes are or mouth, when I ask her, and she will look at a picture on the wall when I ask where the picture is. But she rarely pays any attention to me or anyone else. She loves to play with all her toys, but she doesn't do anything repeatedly (like pushing the same button over and over). When I talk to her or ask her something she ignores me, and continues to do what she was doing like playing with her toy or watching tv. When she watches her cartoons and I get in front of her to get her attention she completely ignores me like I'm a see-through ghost. I'm worried sick.. Has anyone had a kid who was delayed in these areas (waiving, paying attention to mommy, pointing etc), and now are older and normal? Or is she for sure has an autism. I've convinced myself that she does and can't stop panicing. I will make an apt with the neurologist tomorrow, and I was told by an Early Intervention program that she is significantly delayed in her social skills and fine motor skills such as picking up small cereal and putting them in her mouth. (she doesn't do that at all). She seems like normal happy baby to me, she loves it when I sing to her, she looks directly at me into my eyes when I sing, or when I do silly games. She loves pikaboo games and runs to me on her walker when I call her all excited. But when I talk to her most of the time ignores me. I would love to hear from someone who went through this and their kid turned out fine. Some words of encouragement also would help :( thank you so much. I am so afraid of what the neurologist would say. It seems like 100% of normal kids do all these things. If I can just find one who didn't do these things and turned out normal, I could breath just a little easier. Thanks again!
About vaccines etc.. We are on dr. Sears vaccine schedules and we haven't even gotten everything she needs. So I really don't think this could be from vaccines we are being very careful about them.

Answer
You are right to be concerned, but don't worry about this until you have done some homework and researched the issue. There is a wonderful web site you can visit to see the symptoms and what is being done to not only help autistic children but what can be done to prevent it.

Go to: www.childhoodshots.com

Mary Tocco has been researching vaccines for 30 years and has a volume of information on this subject. Her daughter, Rene Tocco, is the doctor that has dedicated her practice to AUTISM and that is the web site above. Many of the problems children are having today are a result of what is being done to the children in doctor's offices and the food they are eating and the lack of information on good breast feeding, etc.

Become educated, not indoctrinated.

EDIT: NO child needs ANY vaccine. It is a very well known documented fact that children who do not get vaccinated are far healthier and grow up much more healthy. Believe what you will about vaccines, but those promoting it is relying on indoctrination and distortion of the facts, not educated facts.

EDIT: Here's a wonderful article for you to read to get a better in depth understanding of why vaccines are causing many of the problems your child is experiencing.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/11/01/flu-vaccine-and-its-side-effects.aspx

Dr. Sears is just spreading the poisons over longer time between getting the poison injections. Infants and babies should NOT be receiving these injections at all. Look at the evidence to learn the truth. Pediatricians were invented to inject poisons and nothing more. The well baby visits is just an injection party, nothing more.

If you are still in doubt about this, watch Dr. Maurice Hilleman that was the Number 1 vaccine expert, researcher, and developer of over 40 popular vaccines talk about the "Bargain Basement Technology" vaccines are in this confidential interview:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edikv0zbAlU

Now watch this video showing the probity of the Bayer Pharmaceutical that makes aspirin for the world and how they view PROFIT over HEALTH:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg-52mHIjhs&feature=related

Is it no wonder the public has started to reject what these guys are promoting?

Drug companies would have you believe their technology saved the world of disease, but nothing is farther from the truth. Look at this study on small pox that drug companies tell you they eradicated:

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2000/12/31/smallpox-vaccine-part-one.aspx

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2000/12/31/smallpox-vaccine2.aspx

Babies are being damaged by these corporations that are promoting this farce. BIG MONEY is being made by them. In fact drug companies make 5 times the profit of any U.S. corporation and politicians get a huge amount of this. This is why the recent Health Care Law funnels so much money directly to them. Both Republicans and Democrats are to blame and the public is getting the booby prize. And the worst part is that children are the victims.

good luck to you

Can anyone suggest a convertable car seat that will fit in a Subaru Forester?

......

We have a 2010 Forester. Since the seats are at an angle the convertible car seat we have (received new from childbirth classes) does not fit without having the front seat pushed all the way to the dash. Anyone have suggestions for a convertible car seat that would fit? My son is 7 months and just does to fit so well in his infant seat anymore. Also, I have read here and there that the seat no longer needs to be at a 45 degree angle, is this true?
I can tell you that it can not go in the middle. In the bottom of the seat, it has a piece that flips up and out for drinks and there is the lap/shoulder belt for the middle, not hooks for the seat. When I took my car in for the infant seat inspection they told me it was not safe in the middle for that reason. I will have to go pull the car seat out and get the manufacture and model and let you know. Also my son is 7 months and has been sitting unassisted since 4 1/2 months, but I hate to change the angle and make him uncomfortable.
http://www.coscojuvenile.com/usa/eng/Products/For-Travel/Car-Seats/Convertible-Car-Seats/Details/1828-22120TRC-Scenera-Convertible-Car-Seat

This is very similar to the one we have. The only thing I found different is our is a 22120FSM (date on seat is 2008) instead of a TRC. These are listed around $50, we do not mind spending more for a nicer one.

Answer
I have read that after 8 months it can be at a greater than 45 degree angle since they can sit up unassisted by that point, so that babies can rear-face longer. But I found with my daughter that she wasn't really comfortable like that. Have you tried putting the convertible in the middle? I was surprised to find that our convertible, which had us pushing the chair all the way forward, fit perfectly between the two front seats in both of our small cars.

As for recommending one that might fit better... which one are you trying?

Add: Well that stinks that you can't put it in the middle back seat. Blah.

If you can find out the manufacturer, the type of seat it is, you may be able to find a seat that is shorter or has a smaller base or would fit better overall. I think it's carseat.org that has a lot of experts that might be able to tell you directly. Another option, the one I'd go for, would be to measure what the current seat's size is and then go to some place like Toys or Babies R Us and measure different seats, and when you find one that seems like it would work then talk to one of the employees and test-fit it in your car to see if it will.

What are he most healing foods or herbs for an infant with cancer?

Cindy P

My 10 month old has been diagnosed with a neuroblastoma.
We won't know how bad it is for a few more days but I was wondering what foods to give her to optimize healing along with her medical treatment.
I am thinking of green juices/powders in particular like spirulina, wheat grass etc along with herbs in her food. Do these or anything else have any effect in your opinion?
Are they safe to give to an infant? She has eaten almost everything and has no known allergies.
What about homeopathic treatment options. Are there any that are safe for an infant less than a year old?

Any foods or homeopathic treatments given will be discussed with her oncologist 1st.

Additional Details
I ate organic food while I was pregnant, breast feed, cloth diaper don't use dairy, eat minimal animal products, fed her all organic food she hadn't had any dairy or meat before developing this, I don't use ANY chemicals, don't vaccinate don't use plastic or microwaves or tvs or eat anything with colour or artificial stuff. I even make my kids play with wooden toys for cripes sake. I did everything you are supposed to do to avoid cancer.
What can I do to get rid of it?

Answer
i just started reading up on this. it may be worth a try
http://www.essiacinfo.org/
i would talk to an herbalist/holistic doc before feeding your child those green juices...i juice but sometimes the straight green juices can be so strong that they burn even my stomach. try to alkalize the body. fresh organic lemon juice in distilled water.

i know of a gentlemen who beat his cancer naturally. he promotes a supplement called INTRAMAX. he has never stated that this helped him beat cancer...but i read a lot of his posts and he seems to be partial to this supplement.

here is something that he posted that may be of help to you

Costs of baby's first 4 years?

Lalo

What would be a good average estimate of the cost of raising a baby in the first four years?

What years are costs the highest?
What are the most expensive costs each year?

Answer
It can be as little as just the cost of extra laundry and cheap food, or it can be the cost of diapers, nannies, preschool, expensive toys, brand named clothes.

The infant year will often cost the most, because even if you breastfeed and use cloth diapers, you are still washing those diapers and going through 4-5 wardrobes. Also you will likely buy at least SOME speciality baby things, like pacifiers, swings, swaddles, a crib or co-sleeper, burp cloths, nursing pillow, and other toys for infants. This is the year where every 3 months means an entirely new set of toys and clothes.

Year 4 will generally be the cheapest, since they only need 1 wardrobe for the year (well 2, summer and winter clothes but these can overlap... a T-shirt and coat for instance) and you don't have specialty foods to buy like whole milk or organic (although some may continue this, most feed preschoolers regular food who would feed an infant / toddler organic, and the food tends to be junkier and cheaper types, like mac and cheese instead of sweet potatoes).

You can spend a lot at any age though if you choose.

It is hard to put a price tag on it. I would say as little as $200 a month per child is reasonable, but it is easy to go over that especially with infants when you include what you are likely to buy for "start up". This is a "base amount" and going under that would be difficult IMO. Also, that is NOT daycare / nannies / preschools. It is being fairly frugal, but not crazily so. That does include laundry, some used / generic clothes, used toys, basic toiletries and medicine, and food. Also the occasional bigger item purchased used (like a stroller or car seat - which are listed commonly for as little as $30 each).

We use disposable diapers, but they are only $20 a month per child (they only need about 4 a day as toddlers). Food per toddler is probably about $80 a month (healthy and organic, you can be cheaper than this, but we don't do tiny jars / containers of things, which would cost more - just real food and whole milk). We pay $200 a year for doctor's visits with our health insurance. My mom buys their clothes (she is a cloths shoppingholic). For furniture this year we are getting 2 potty chairs for $3 each and a table and chairs set for $20. I buy mostly used toys, but lots of them, maybe $200 for the year. Wipes are likely $6 a month (2 cents each, we use at most 10 a day). OTC medicines, baby shampoo maybe $50 a year.

I suppose there is gas for playdates, but I would use gas going places anyway. Our car seats were gifts from someone I use to work with. Stroller a gift from a family member. I have a couple of other strollers I got cheap from Craig's list.

When you are really trying to keep cost down, the cost of food is going to matter. That can be a determining factor, because no matter what they WILL need food. You can't get around that. (Unless you get WIC, then the food is free).

I have twins and our money is tight, but I make sure they have everything. They have used versions, and I cook their meals. I am a SAHM. Most parents are not as able to be as frugal as $200 a month per child. That comes to $10,000 for 4 years. Food itself is going to be $21 a week (or $1 for a meal and a snack), and that alone is $4,000. Then you have laundry, clothes, big items, outings, toys etc. So I would put $10,000 as your "base" and from there it can easily go up.

7 month old and bath?

michaellan

My son wont sit still.... hes already crawling an pulling himself up... he is too big for the infant bath and I have one of those bath seats, but dont care for it, as it seems to scratch his legs. He also doesnt like the seat because he cant splash me. I have tried giving him toys and singing songs and whatnot, but he just wants to crawl around the bathtub. I always have one hand on him and the water isnt deep or anything. But he wont sit still... Anyone else been through this... It just makes me nervous.... Anyone have any advice? Thanks bunches and Merry Christmas!
He tends to need at least one bath per day, since he only wants to feed himself. I never thought of taking a bath with him though. Thanks!

Answer
Try to take a bath with him. He might enjoy having Mommy right there and could decide to sit, though he might decide to sit on you! If he's not too dirty, you could also try just a sponge bath, and just put him in a bath if he needs his hair washed or he's just eaten a plate of spaghetti and really needs a scrub!

Good toys for baby's first Christmas?

ainawgsd

My MIL asked us about what we wanted for our son for Christmas. It's a hard question right now because he's only 3 months old and not quite ready to play with toys yet. His wants and needs are still pretty simple right now, although he is enjoying his time in the swing more and spending more time looking at his mobile. He already has some rattles, teething rings, a few bath toys, and stuffed animals but not much else. Any parents have suggestions for good toys for a 3-12 month old? I figure we might as well ask for some slightly older toys as well, we can always store them in the closet until he's old enough to play with them.

Answer
Exercauser
Bouncer
Jumperoo
Push toy
Soft blocks
Stacking rings
Bath toys
Anything labeled 0 - 12 months!

Most toys are labelled what age they are appropriate for. Many of the 18+ month toys are also great for kids 12 months old, since they advance at different levels.

By 12 months your baby will almost certainly be crawling, but may be walking and speaking their first word and signing perhaps another 5 (if you start teaching baby sign language at 7 months). So that covers a very wide toy range, from infant to toddler.

Perhaps a good way to go is to focus on crawler toys. Things used before the toddler stage, but that may encourage walking.

an urgent question about disinfecting my infants' toys...?

julybabygi

my daughter (4 months old) puts her toys in her mouth a lot. my little toddler cousin came over and i caught him chewing on her toys. i do not want to let her play with them until i have disinfected them. i have heard about immersion into soapy water but most of her toys are mechanical. it will ruin them! is there some product or something that i can safely disinfect her mechanical toys with such as a wipe or something? ive heard lysol is really good for toys and stuff but idk what would be good when she puts everything in her mouth. i dont need to be poisoning her or anything! so if you have any advice i would love to hear it! thanks!!! :D

Answer
I have always wondered the same thing. I found this:

http://householdtraditions.com/benefect.htm

It is a botanical disinfectant.

"Benefect® Botanical Disinfectant:

The First & Only Botanical Disinfectant in North America
Kills Over 99.99% of Bacteria, Fungus, TB and HIV
No Rinse or Wipe Required
No Warning Labels or First Aid Statements
No Mixing"

Benefect® is ideal for Hard Surface Disinfection on:

Kid's Toys & High Chair Trays
Diaper Pails & Change Tables
Countertops, Sinks & Food Preparation Surfaces
Sports Equipment
Toilet Seats
Sickrooms
Pet Areas
Garbage Cans

...& other similar surfaces where bacteria, mold and mildew or odors are a concern and where a botanical product is sensible.

I have yet to get this, but I will be soon! I give you thumbs up for not wanting to give her the toys until you disinfect them. Your cousin may not have tuberculosis, but he could have a cold or the flu and sometimes symptoms aren't noticeable right away so he "could" be contagious if he were sick. Good luck!

Edit: In the meantime (if you were to order the stuff above for later purposes), you could just wipe the toys down with a soapy rag and the wipe with a wet clean one. They say it takes a minimum of 20 seconds to kill germs with soap and
water.

Edit: Per the cdc website, germs can live from 20 min. up to 2 hours on a hard surface.

The disinfectant above is all natural. I would rather be safe than sorry, especially with an infant.

Babies and Toys?

TT

When do babies usually become interested in toys. My 2 month old only seems to like her dangly toys like from her bouncy seat, swing and crib. I was just wondering if she should be inerested in rattles and other things yet. Also, what are some of the better and more educational toys that they first play with?

Answer
Every year Oppenheim evaluates infant toys and gives awards for the best 'developmental' toys that engage the baby's senses and encourage different skills (eye tracking, eye-hand coordination, understanding of cause and effect, understanding of object permanence, gross- and fine-motor development etc.) You can see the award winning toys here: http://www.toyportfolio.com/Infants/Index.asp.

Tiny Love has several award winning toys. Their website is also very informative about how each of their toys encourages infant development. http://www.tinylove.com
They have several amazing infant activity gyms. (See link below.) The activity gyms tend to be pricey but you can find them for reasonable prices on Craigslist or Ebay.

Lamaze also makes many award winning toys. (See link below.) Their toys tend to be soft and cuddly with many textures, peek-a-boo flaps, patterns, colors, and sounds to explore.

Have fun watching your little one explore and see her developing right before your eyes. :D

Do the infant learning games really work?

Q. I was at barnes and nobles the other day and being 6 months pregnant of course i went to the parenting secton and say this book (or a couple books) about games you can play with your baby from newborn and up? i mean do they really help? has anyone tried these?

Answer
I haven't read any books on games to play with your children, but I do get e-mails and mailings from formula and diaper companies which include developmental suggestions. Plus, you kind of make up stuff as you go along!

These are the things I do with my almost 3 month old son (who is "highly advanced" according to milestone charts):

* I talk to him constantly. I tell him all the tasks I am doing, and I make up silly stories. This helps his vocabulary development. I also vary my speaking voice and I refer to myself as "mommy" and my son by his name instead of saying "I" and "you" (babies are not supposed to comprehend pronouns at a young age).
* I count to 10 with him on both our fingers in English and Spanish every day. And, I use his toys to introduce the names of colors, also in both languages. When I show him books with pictures of animals or objects, I try to use both languages as well.
* He has a bumble bee toy that I hold a few inches away from his face and allow him to focus on. Then I make a buzzing sound and move the bee in different directions (up, down, left, right) so he practices following it with his eyes. This helps spacial development.
* I sing songs to him, especially ones with hand motions or dances (la manito, itsy bitsy spider, wheels on the bus, etc).
* I place toys in his hand(s) while we are playing together so he works on his grip, or I sit him in his swing with toys attached to the play tray when he wants independant time so he can practice grabbing the toys himself. He also like to play on his play mat and in his bouncy chair where he can bat at and rattle the toys.

I hope these suggestions help. Good luck!

What makes infants happy?

jedimedic6

Answer
Actually food, cuddling, sleep, a diaper change, warm clothes, toys, but most important mom's warmth, tender loving care, TLC. An infant unhappy, you have to smile lots infront of your infant, thats the only way they will learn how to smile and be happy, by watching your emotions, you show them that you are always happy, smilling around them and I can guarante they will start smilling and being happy....father figure..
