My son's lead level was 5.0. The doctor advised me to get rid of all toys that were made in China?

London

My son is 18 months old, I don't want to expose him to lead. How to I determine what is safe and not safe. Having doing an inventory of his toys, the majority have been made in China. HELP!

Answer
Every responsible parent knows to keep cabinet doors locked so that young ones don't have access to dangerous chemicals, but what about lead, a toxin found in many common children's toys? How do you know if your child's toys contain lead and what can you do to minimize their risk of exposure to this harmful substance?

Lead is a toxic metal that can have devastating effects on the mental and physical development of children. The brain and nervous system of children younger than six years old are the most at risk for lead poisoning. Even low exposure levels can produce damaging effects ranging from impaired growth and hearing, to problems with posture and behavior.

High levels of lead exposure can cause deafness, blindness, convulsions, or in rare instances, even death. Even without severe effects, children exposed to lead are more likely to experience difficulties with reading and vocabulary, attention and focus, and fine-motor coordination.

So how does lead make its way into the products that consumers buy for children? Lead is used in manufacturing in paint and plastic used to make children's toys. Paint used in houses, on products sold for children, and on dishes has been banned from containing lead in the United States since 1978, but this regulation has not reached some countries that still export products to the US.

In those countries it is still legal to utilize lead in the production of plastic, even when the plastic is used to make children's toys. The lead acts as a softener to make plastic more flexible, which allows it to return to its original shape. The breakdown of the chemical bond between lead and these plastics forms lead dust, a known health hazard.

You can visit your State Department of Health's Lead Hazard Product Recall Website for information concerning toy recalls. You will also find a comprehensive list at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website.

There are home testing kits offered that are designed to test household items, toys, soil, and dust for lead content, but these do-it-yourself kits are not recommended as reliable by The State Department of Health and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.

Lead screening can help identify children with blood lead levels that may be dangerous. Infants that play with older toys (antique toys, toys passed down through generations, or toys made before the ban on paint with lead) and toys made in other countries may be at greater risk.

Before you buy new or used baby toys, make sure the toys that you intend to purchase do not appear on the recall list. You can even do some research about the country in which the toy is manufactured. Some stores now have information on file compiled to trace the country of origin for the toys that they sell.

You can also inspect toys that your child already plays with for chipping and peeling paint, the number one source for lead poisoning in children. Be careful when choosing colorful jewelry and toys, especially those imported from other countries.

Keeping your baby safe is a parent's primary concern. Baby Toys Galore offers a huge selection of developmental and just-for-fun toys for baby, including many made with organic products. Baby Toys Galore encourages parents and grandparents to keep baby safe by staying informed.

How about toys made in China and the dangers of lead based paint?

It can be really difficult and frustrating to figure out if the beloved toy my child is chewing on has actually been recalled. Any why aren't the toy companies doing more about this? Should the government put a stop to it, or should the free market weed out irresponsible toy companies?

What are the best toys for a 6 month old?

Possibly something to help with learning to crawl.

Answer
In fact if youâre Christmas shopping with a infant in mind, you may find thereâs a boggling number of choices.

In the very early years safety is of special concern. A person wants to select well constructed toys, that are free of any sort of small parts that might potentially detach. Children at this age certainly will put toys in their mouths. Another reason one might also be concerned about the country of origin given the recent spate of tainted toys originating in China.

Toys for the the under one set are often aimed at emerging skills, such as fine and gross motor skills, tactile stimulation, etc.

Babies at 6 months are gaining the ability to sit up. And so toys that they can manipulate on the floor in front of them are attractive.

Babies between 6 and 12 moths of age will also begin to move (creep, crawl, take first steps) so there are many toys aimed at supporting this development too.

A few favorite suggestions:

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden First Vehicles Set
www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Deluxe-Wooden-Vehicles/dp/B000GKY2CQ

Sturdy first vehicles for small children. The size and weight are appropriate for very young children to grasp and carry. I find that many young children will spend endless amount of time pushing a small rolling toy around. These are toys that they are likely to play with for a good long while. I do not know what the country of origin is, Melissa & Doug is a favorite brand - some of their things are made in China, others in other Asian nations such as Vietnam.

Blocks
http://fatbraintoys.com/toy_companies/haba/fantasy_blocks.cfm
(Also available for sale thru various sellers on Amazon.com)

Blocks are also another great âgrow with me toyâ. Even very young children will enjoy a small set of colorful blocks which they can simply pick up and explore. These can be added to as the child grows into more sophisticated pretend and build play. Haba makes some beautifully whimsical blocks that are manufactured in Germany.

Sorters
www.amazon.com

Sorters come in, well, all âsortsâ of sizes, colors, and configurations for young kids. And are often treasured toys for kids between 6 mos and a year and a half or so. They love to place objects inside of something and dump them out again and again. Melissa and Doug make some toys they label as âfill and spillâ with cute themes (bugs in a jug, fishbowl, picnic baskets etc.). Thereâs also the old fashion âshape sortersâ and these come in many âthemesâ these days too. For examples, just try searching for âshape sorterâ or âfill and spillâ on Amazon.com.

If you are concerned about the nation of origin - I will note that FatBrainToys.com is one toy website that allows customers to conduct product searches that include not only age, gender, price, but also the country of origin (and it allows you to exclude China if you so wish).

Beyond that, what toy companies actually make infant toys in the US? Are there really any? I havent found any...

I have desided to buy my baby for Christmas only wooden toys. And if I buy plastic I will make sure its not from China.
Wooden toys dont have slinters they are made so well that a child can bit it and wont get splinters.

Answer
I'm also making a concerted effort to buy more locally-made toys, made from organic products such as wood, this Christmas. I just feel that we haven't learned all that we will in the coming months/years about plastics and how inorganic materials in children's toys can affect their health.

Do you look on the back of the package to find out where it was made before buying it? Do you buy made China?

The last question was suppose to be, "Do you buy stuff "Made in China" or do you try to find something else to take the place of it."

How about infant toys? Do you return it if it says China on it?

Answer
I look to make sure. Especially if Im giving the toy to a baby or toddler. They seem to chew on everything. Im checking chocolates and candy now too.

what toys do people buy?

k

I really don't want anything made from china, I am too nervous with all the recalls. I even swtiched my bottles to the playtex nursers original because they are made in the usa. The cute ones with designs are made in china. :-( Everything is made in china. I am just looking for rattles or bathtub toys, things for an infant. I don't know if I am overreacting. Anyone else concerned with all the toys being recalled? I went into babies r us and couldn't find one toy for an infant that wasn't made in china...
"no need to show off"....show off what? I use rattles to play with my baby. Have you ever distracted a crying baby with a toy that makes noise?? I'm not looking to spend lots of money, just toys that are safe.

Answer
I have also looked into this same topic. Here is an interesting article that AOL had on their welcome screen tonight.
http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/09/19/made-in-the-u-s-a-what-products-are-still-made-in-america/

Pretty sad list though.

I am now using dr. browns which i believe are made in england. But I could be wrong.

I also agree that it is very hard to find anything made in america for babies, but you just have to check and stay up to day with the recalls.

I VOTE

The cars roll endlessly off the local assembly lines of the industry's biggest automakers, more than 10,000 a day, into the eager hands of Brazil's new middle class. The shiny new Fords, Fiats, and Chevrolets tell the tale of an economy in full bloom that now boasts the fourth largest auto market in the world.

What happens once those vehicles hit the streets, however, is shaping up as a national tragedy, experts say, with thousands of Brazilians dying every year in auto accidents that in many cases shouldn't have proven fatal.

The culprits are the cars themselves, produced with weaker welds, scant safety features and inferior materials compared to similar models manufactured for U.S. and European consumers, say experts and engineers inside the industry.

Brazilian death rate from passenger car accidents that is nearly four times that of the United States.

The country's few safety activists perceive a deadly double standard, with automakers earning more money from selling cars that offer drivers fewer safeguards.

"The manufacturers do this because the cars are a little cheaper to make and the demands of the Brazilian consumers are less; their knowledge of safety issues is lower than in Europe or the U.S."

Manufacturers earn a 10 percent profit on Brazilian-made cars, compared with 3 percent in the U.S. and a global average of 5 percent, according to IHS Automotive, an industry consulting firm.

Only next year will laws require frontal air bags and anti-lock braking systems on all cars, safety features that have been standard in industrial countries for years.

An engineer for a major U.S. automaker, speaking only on condition of anonymity for fear of losing his job, said he has watched for years as his company failed to implement more advanced safety features in Brazil, simply because the law did not require them.

"''The automakers are pleased to make more profitable cars for countries where the demands, whatever they may be, are less rigorous," he said. "It happens everywhere — India, China and Russia, for example."

The dangers come down to basics, engineers said: the lack of body reinforcements, lower-quality steel in car bodies, weaker or fewer weld spots to hold the vehicles together and car platforms designed decades before modern safety advances.

Over the years Ward said he has watched the same battles play out over auto safety — the only thing that changes is the location.

"The sad thing is, this has been the experience in the 1960s in the U.S., in the 1990s in Europe and now in Latin America," Ward said. "The industry does the least it can get away with until they're forced to do something different. It's maddening."

Why don't Corporations voluntary make cars that are more safer evev after there is demand for it???

Answer
Even with government oversight, the list of safety recalls demanded by the government is daunting.

With 75% of our consumer products made in 3rd world countries / China, with no government oversight, you'd start seeing child products/toys painted in lead, consumer foods with melamine (like china has already done to infant formula), food products contaminated and cleanliness would suffer as well

Where can I find a native American dream catcher in Tennessee?

Kristy Hat

Answer
From any shop selling made-in-china pseudo-indian crap.

Because dream catchers aren't "native american" at all. They are specifically Ojibwe cradle decorations, crib mobiles, invented in the early 1920's, nothing more. They have no spiritual meaning or special powers.

Being as there are no Ojibwe communities in Tennessee, any one you buy is going to be made by non-natives.

And in fact, the sort of ones that white people seem to be obsessed with- with bright neon colors and plastic beads and dyed chicken feathers, are almost certainly made in china.

To tell the truth, we can't figure out why you guys are so into what is, essentially, an infant's toy in the first place.

I really do believe these things work. My family on my moms side is half cherokee indian so we own alot of dream catchers, but nobody knows for sure how to cleanse them.. So do you? My sister said that you hang it outside and the first rays of sun shine it gets will get the bad dreams out. Others say to spray with water, or another way is to get sage and all that, but i dont want to smell up my room with sage. One more way ive been told is when theirs a full moon outside, you have to hang the dream catcher outside all night and the first moon rays the dream catcher sees will clean it. Got any simple, REAL ways to rid bad dreams from a dream catcher? Thankss.

Answer
"My family on my moms side is half cherokee indian so we own alot of dream catchers"

ROFLMAO

"dreamcatchers" aren't remotely connected to anything Cherokee, and aren't part of Cherokee culture or tradition.

They are Ojibwe cradle decorations, invented in the 1920's, as sort of crib mobiles. They have ZERO spiritual significance (which is why we are able to make and sell them to tourists- things with spiritual meanings can never be sold)

And as crib mobiles, they aren't intended for anyone over the age of like, 5.

We are baffled by white peoples obsession with what is, essentially, an infant's crib toy.

Sheesh! WHICH of the three Cherokee bands is your family affiliated with? Or is it just an undocumented family rumor? Obviously the latter, since any Cherokee elder would smack you upside the head for ascribing magic powers to a dreamcatcher. That's for gullible new age white people.

Wanna wash your "made in china" dreamcatcher, covered in little dyed chicken feathers? soap and water and hang it up to dry.

edit**********@ Terry....YOU have a dreamcatcher? seriously? Do you also have a night light in your room to keep the bogeyman away? <giggles>

At this point , we have our own currency, and we are not yet quite in the cluches of U.N. /Euro control, but we are standing on a slippery slope , and I fear for our nation. The benefit to other nations of globalization is that their standard of living gets lifted. Guess what happens to ours? It falls, that's not a guess, that's a fact! Cases in point, look at the auto industry, they sent so much of the work overseas that paid well here in the U.S. ,the American real content is very low in so called "American Made" cars. Look at toy manufacturers, I THINK it was Mattel, ( correct me if I've got the wrong one) that has a setup in China making toys for export back here in the U.S. that were painted with lead paint. We got them here and had them tested for toxins, found lead paint, the manufacturer apologizes to , of all people , the CHINESE!!! WE get the back of their hand!! Let's go from there to the infant formula that sicken and killed children that was made in CHINA. They DO NOT operate under the same parameters as U.S. manufacturers do, and don't let anyone tell you they do! These people that set up shop overseas are dubiously called "American Businesses" selling out our very nation. What do you think, does globalization help our country?

infant toys and lead paint?
Q. are there any particular brands of infant toys that are made in the usa? or anywhere but China?

A. Little Tykes, I believe. However, most are from Asian countries. There are lead test kits you can buy to test items in your home. The kits start at 4 bucks. I think you can get them at hardware stores.

I have desided to buy my baby for Christmas only wooden toys. And if I buy plastic I will make sure its not from China.
Wooden toys dont have slinters they are made so well that a child can bit it and wont get splinters.

A. I'm also making a concerted effort to buy more locally-made toys, made from organic products such as wood, this Christmas. I just feel that we haven't learned all that we will in the coming months/years about plastics and how inorganic materials in children's toys can affect their health.

My son's lead level was 5.0. The doctor advised me to get rid of all toys that were made in China?

Q. My son is 18 months old, I don't want to expose him to lead. How to I determine what is safe and not safe. Having doing an inventory of his toys, the majority have been made in China. HELP!

Q. Where can I find toys that are not made in China? Like german toys or british toys that are actually made in not manufac and then made in china? Thanks!

A. check here, or look on a search engine
http://www.seanet.com/~bross/usamade.htm

Looking for a COMPLETE list of all recalled infant toys, I can only find little lists here and there.?
Q. Is there some place on line where all of them have been listed from the onset of this hype until now?

All my sons toys are freak'n made in China... I think iam going to have to take them all away.

How do we know that the ones that havent been listed are safe? Maybe they just havent been tested or listed YET.

Beyond that, what toy companies actually make infant toys in the US? Are there really any? I havent found any...

Stupid freaking chinese. Hacking our defense computers and poisoning our children, theyre probably trying to weaken us for an invasion.. jeez.

A. Try the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Here is their list of toys, Chinese or otherwise: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/toy.html

Their main page is www.cpsc.gov
