what is a good toy for a 6 month old baby girl?

stinkynach

so i'm going to visit my niece thats 6 months old and i would like to get her a toy or something. what would be appropriate for her at that age, but could also be used for a while. links please! im 14 so i cant spend too much.

Answer
My son's all-time favorite toy is this one. It was my best friend's son's favorite toy so she bought me one as well. My mother and I now give it as a gift for every baby shower. Other parents have raved about it as well.

It's very strange and a little annoying, but babies LOVE it.

Bright Starts Twisty Bug. Walmart, Target, etc. sell them for quite inexpensively. Stick price is $6, but worth $100 in my opinion for the hours of fun and amusement it has furnished. Comes with batteries.

Toys for 6 -7 month old?

Q. What is your childs favorite toy. My daughter is in need of some new toys but I'm not sure with so much out there what to buy.

Answer
You probably have a lot of stuff around the house you can use......

Babies around this age love to knock down towers - so big soft blocks are good, or even leftover containers, or nesting cupts -all to build with. nesting cups are just a joy all of their own - I think they were my dd's favorite at that age, along with the stacking rings. If you don't own either of those already, they are worth buying.

A metal bowl with a wooden spoon is a great toy, also rattles (make your own with rice or cherrios in a container that closes securely)

A bowl full of small block sis also great fun, so they can take them out. I also fill and old purese with old toys and let her take those out too - great fun!

Looking into the future a bit, a beach ball or other ball that is easy to knock if fun for when they start scooting and crawling. They are also developing fine motor skills enough to press buttons - I know they make books that play a noise when you press the button, but just anything that has a few big buttons to push (or rather bat at, so don't get anything too complex)

now is also the time to bring out the stuffed animals and watch them babble at the toys in the most adorable manner possible. And then adorably try to bite the toy's head off, lol. But seriously, stuffed animals come into their won at this age.

Other "toys" my dd loves are a water bottle partially filled with water that she can try and pick up, also a plastic glass to suck on the rim off, also anything with a mirror that she can see herself in.

Virginia Beach Vacation question?

tnp_424

I have searched countless websites and still have not found an answer to my question. I am planning a early June ( the first week) vacation to Virginia Beach. I am learning that Sandbridge would be a good choice however we want access to the boardwalk. What would be a good hotel with the best of both worlds? Quiet but not too quiet. We like all that the tourist area has to offer but would prefer a bit quieter of a beach spot. Maybe if we are going in early June this won't be a problem but maybe it will be. I have read that there is a Military event going on with a concert that we would like to avoid. Does anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone know much about the trash pile hill? Are there carnival like rides there? I have searched sites with this info but it never gave off too many details. This is out first family vacation. My husband is 38 years old and has never seen the ocean. Our son is 7 and has never seen the ocean and we are bringing my step daughter who is 16. We are looking for fun family activities. I have already searched many things but reading about them does not explain what they are like from a persons perspective. WE just want to have a good time and not spend a fortune. We are traveling from Ohio. WE have chosen Virginia Beach because it is the closest ocean to us. ANY input would be great....What to see what to avoid and what is a good location? THANK YOU!

Answer
lol trash pile hill! I've lived here my whole life of 31 years and seen that dump turned into a nice park. 1x to 2x a year there is a carnval that arrives. I'd say it comes there around easter but it seems to vary a bit so I cant give you definate dates. There is a large payground called kids cove teens and small kids like this thing and a walk path around all of Mt. Trashmore. Up the hill usually has wonderful wind to fly a kite wich you can buy at a toy store or even a dollar store.Sandbridge tends to be a locals beach. There are no hotels and only 1 small general store but parking is free and the beach is tucked in very well so most tourist dont know about it. You've done a lot of research. The tourist hotels are along the main beach. I264 will end right at the beach and thats where most people will find their hotels. If you drive more left you will get out of the main crowd and will probally get to the slightly cheaper hotels. Although We will not get a hotel on the beach because they jack those prices up way too high. I would get one at one of the earlier exits. If your into camping, instead of turning left, turn right and keep going. You will see campgrounds on both left and right. The main beach does have a mini carnival along the boardwalk and there are several palces with mini golf.
Even if their is an air show keep to the far left side of 264 and you will bypass all those people waiting to get off to get to the base. The air shows are free if you wanted to go. They are loud but the navy organizes the parking very well. Every one but infants like the all day shows.
If you had extra money to spend there is the Virginia aquarium if you turn off 264 and go to the right. They recently jacked those prices up too and I havent checked what they are now but kids to very old enjoy that place. One year we had season tickets.
If your going early June they probally wont have put up the parking meters yet and most tourist come after school ends in late june to early july.
There is a place on princess Anne road. Probally a 30 min drive form the beach that did guided horse riding trails last year. i think their rates were reasonable. i could dig up their web site again if you wanted.
if you want more info or details just email and I can continue to babble.

Any suggestions for a good educational toy for a three yr old?

Kate

she has the LeapFrog Scribble and Write..

Answer
Anything made by Leap Frog- I love their products!

Arts and crafts supplies- crayons, fingerpaints, sidewalk chalk, blank paper and coloring sheets

musical instruments- harmonica, tambourine, maracas, cymbals, bells, CDs with lullabies and nursery rhymes and classical music on them.

Puzzles

Board games such as Chutes and Ladders

Card Games such as Memory

Bubbles, balls, balloons

Mega Blocks, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys

Slides, Swings, Trampoline, Sandbox (and beach toys), toys to play with in the bathtub or sink (kitchen utensils work well).

Sports equipment- toddler basketball, baseball/softball, etc.

Refrigerator Magnets (alphabet and numerical)

Magnifying Glass, Critter Cage

DVDs- Leap Frog makes some educational DVDs as well

Computer software and/or websites- I have a three year old daughter who likes JumpStart. We also visit BrainQuest, Starfall and other websites.

Wagon

Dress up (stock up after halloween- various wigs, hats, facepaints, shoes, costume jewelry, etc.)

BOOKS! The look and find books are great, Books A Million has a big selection of them (some specifially for toddlers with more durable pages). Barnes & Noble has a great selection of DK Baby books, which are great for infants and toddlers. Traditional storybooks are great. Read to them, ask them questions such as how would that make them feel, what they think will happen next and my 3 year old likes to "retell" the story to me (an early reading skill).

Games such as Simon Says, I Spy, etc.- no toy required.

Instead of buying a toy, try spending that money on an activity instead. A month of Gymboree/Little Gym or gymnastics, dance, etc. Trip and/or membership to the aquarium, zoo, children's museum.

There are free activities, as well. Most libraries and/or book stores have a weekly story time.

Where should I buy gently used infant toys online?

Maitreyi

I am a proud new mother of a beautiful baby boy, and I am looking to purchase sencond hand toys at a very good price.

I've looked at e-bay but after shipping there is not much of a discount from store prices.

Any suggestions??

Thank You in advance!!

Answer
Anything online is going to have similar shipping cost. the best bet is to go look at second hand infant clothing stores. Try the yellow pages (or 411.com).
We have one in out town that lets us sell the cloths our children outgrew. We put them on consignment. As they sold, we got half of what they sold for, and we always spent it at the store purchasing more age appropriate toys and cloths that fit them.

Are parents aware of the harmful effects of lots of chemicals found in most plastic?

Stupid Sma

like ''Bisphenol A'' or 'BPA' and other chemicals like phthalates ?

''BPA is controversial because it exerts weak, but detectable, hormone-like properties, raising concerns about its presence in consumer products and foods contained in such products. Starting in 2008, several governments questioned its safety, prompting some retailers to withdraw polycarbonate products. A 2010 report from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raised further concerns regarding exposure of fetuses, infants, and young children.[1] In September 2010, Canada became the first country to declare BPA a toxic substance.[2][3] In the European Union and Canada, BPA use is banned in baby bottles.[4]''

Answer
Yup, thus why we only buy wooden toys and we make sure all of our plastic is BPA free, or buy glass/wood products where possible. We use glass baby bottles.

Please help.. My 14 months old daughter is delayed, autism?

Q. My 14 months old daughter is delayed in her social skills and fine motor skills. She is not waiving, not clapping, not pointing, not self feeding. She will sometimes show where my eyes are or mouth, when I ask her, and she will look at a picture on the wall when I ask where the picture is. But she rarely pays any attention to me or anyone else. She loves to play with all her toys, but she doesn't do anything repeatedly (like pushing the same button over and over). When I talk to her or ask her something she ignores me, and continues to do what she was doing like playing with her toy or watching tv. When she watches her cartoons and I get in front of her to get her attention she completely ignores me like I'm a see-through ghost. I'm worried sick.. Has anyone had a kid who was delayed in these areas (waiving, paying attention to mommy, pointing etc), and now are older and normal? Or is she for sure has an autism. I've convinced myself that she does and can't stop panicing. I will make an apt with the neurologist tomorrow, and I was told by an Early Intervention program that she is significantly delayed in her social skills and fine motor skills such as picking up small cereal and putting them in her mouth. (she doesn't do that at all). She seems like normal happy baby to me, she loves it when I sing to her, she looks directly at me into my eyes when I sing, or when I do silly games. She loves pikaboo games and runs to me on her walker when I call her all excited. But when I talk to her most of the time ignores me. I would love to hear from someone who went through this and their kid turned out fine. Some words of encouragement also would help :( thank you so much. I am so afraid of what the neurologist would say. It seems like 100% of normal kids do all these things. If I can just find one who didn't do these things and turned out normal, I could breath just a little easier. Thanks again!
About vaccines etc.. We are on dr. Sears vaccine schedules and we haven't even gotten everything she needs. So I really don't think this could be from vaccines we are being very careful about them.

Answer
You are right to be concerned, but don't worry about this until you have done some homework and researched the issue. There is a wonderful web site you can visit to see the symptoms and what is being done to not only help autistic children but what can be done to prevent it.

Go to: www.childhoodshots.com

Mary Tocco has been researching vaccines for 30 years and has a volume of information on this subject. Her daughter, Rene Tocco, is the doctor that has dedicated her practice to AUTISM and that is the web site above. Many of the problems children are having today are a result of what is being done to the children in doctor's offices and the food they are eating and the lack of information on good breast feeding, etc.

Become educated, not indoctrinated.

EDIT: NO child needs ANY vaccine. It is a very well known documented fact that children who do not get vaccinated are far healthier and grow up much more healthy. Believe what you will about vaccines, but those promoting it is relying on indoctrination and distortion of the facts, not educated facts.

EDIT: Here's a wonderful article for you to read to get a better in depth understanding of why vaccines are causing many of the problems your child is experiencing.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/11/01/flu-vaccine-and-its-side-effects.aspx

Dr. Sears is just spreading the poisons over longer time between getting the poison injections. Infants and babies should NOT be receiving these injections at all. Look at the evidence to learn the truth. Pediatricians were invented to inject poisons and nothing more. The well baby visits is just an injection party, nothing more.

If you are still in doubt about this, watch Dr. Maurice Hilleman that was the Number 1 vaccine expert, researcher, and developer of over 40 popular vaccines talk about the "Bargain Basement Technology" vaccines are in this confidential interview:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edikv0zbAlU

Now watch this video showing the probity of the Bayer Pharmaceutical that makes aspirin for the world and how they view PROFIT over HEALTH:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg-52mHIjhs&feature=related

Is it no wonder the public has started to reject what these guys are promoting?

Drug companies would have you believe their technology saved the world of disease, but nothing is farther from the truth. Look at this study on small pox that drug companies tell you they eradicated:

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2000/12/31/smallpox-vaccine-part-one.aspx

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2000/12/31/smallpox-vaccine2.aspx

Babies are being damaged by these corporations that are promoting this farce. BIG MONEY is being made by them. In fact drug companies make 5 times the profit of any U.S. corporation and politicians get a huge amount of this. This is why the recent Health Care Law funnels so much money directly to them. Both Republicans and Democrats are to blame and the public is getting the booby prize. And the worst part is that children are the victims.

good luck to you

What is the bst way to clean infants toys after they have been sick?

Lalana

My baby has RSV and I need to disinfect his toys soon. I know I can throw the stuffed animals in pillow case and wash them but what about all the other stuff?

Answer
Put some bleach in a bath tub full of water and dunk them in. The ones with batteries, just give them a wipe down. I understand completely why you want to get those germs out! My nephew had RSV and did breathing treatments and took steroids to get better. I remember him being sick for weeks. Poor thing! I hope your baby gets better soon. You should think about an air purifier like the ones Rainbow has. Those are great.

i want to know what a baby does 2 & 3 months of age :)
what were your babies doing please be specific :)
thanks

Answer
2 months: Smiling, cooing, batting at toys, starting to laugh, lifting head off floor, following objects with eyes, able to sit with support, blowing spit bubbles.
3 months: Having conversations (IE: I talk and she cooes back), the mini push up (lifting her arms and belly off the ground while holding her head up), grabbing toys, trying to EAT her toys (haha), rolling belly to back, back to belly, able to stand while holding onto my fingers, plays with her feet and sticks them in her mouth.

Add: remember all babies develop at their own pace!

Is adoption natural...........?

Q. Was talking with my mother and she said yes adoption of a child by the community is very natural. The aunts, uncles, grandparents, and by good family friends. While if the parents died the child might only stay a day or 2 out of the week with their aunt before switching homes to stay with the family friend and so on and so forth.

I had to interject what about infant adoption? She stated that with infants during that time some mothers couldn't produce milk so another mother in the community would take the baby and nurse it and that child would have basically 2 mothers.

My question is: have man made laws made adoption of newborns, infants, and toddlers unnatural because they completely remove a child from their natural environment?

Answer
No. Adoption is NOT natural. It is a CLEARLY man made law... otherwise there wouldn't need to be a lot of paperwork etc and the bond between a mother and baby (actually related to each other) wouldn't exist.

NOTHING about adoption is natural. It is as unnatural as you can get.

Caring for children and taking them in under your wing to help them when they have no one else is not the same as adoption. There are many ways to care and look after a child who needs it that isn't adoption. People just don't want to look at that... or those who could lack the intelligence to come up with something more compassionate and loving than adoption.

ETA: 'Animal adoptions' are nothing to do with human beings. They are not cruel about it and it doesn't last forever. Animal adoptions are about teh SURVIVAL of an animal.... NOT to fulfil a lust by another animal to have a toy to play with. In human world, adoption is NOT about survival AT ALL. Some people need to get their priorities right!

an urgent question about disinfecting my infants' toys...?

julybabygi

my daughter (4 months old) puts her toys in her mouth a lot. my little toddler cousin came over and i caught him chewing on her toys. i do not want to let her play with them until i have disinfected them. i have heard about immersion into soapy water but most of her toys are mechanical. it will ruin them! is there some product or something that i can safely disinfect her mechanical toys with such as a wipe or something? ive heard lysol is really good for toys and stuff but idk what would be good when she puts everything in her mouth. i dont need to be poisoning her or anything! so if you have any advice i would love to hear it! thanks!!! :D

Answer
I have always wondered the same thing. I found this:

http://householdtraditions.com/benefect.htm

It is a botanical disinfectant.

"Benefect® Botanical Disinfectant:

The First & Only Botanical Disinfectant in North America
Kills Over 99.99% of Bacteria, Fungus, TB and HIV
No Rinse or Wipe Required
No Warning Labels or First Aid Statements
No Mixing"

Benefect® is ideal for Hard Surface Disinfection on:

Kid's Toys & High Chair Trays
Diaper Pails & Change Tables
Countertops, Sinks & Food Preparation Surfaces
Sports Equipment
Toilet Seats
Sickrooms
Pet Areas
Garbage Cans

...& other similar surfaces where bacteria, mold and mildew or odors are a concern and where a botanical product is sensible.

I have yet to get this, but I will be soon! I give you thumbs up for not wanting to give her the toys until you disinfect them. Your cousin may not have tuberculosis, but he could have a cold or the flu and sometimes symptoms aren't noticeable right away so he "could" be contagious if he were sick. Good luck!

Edit: In the meantime (if you were to order the stuff above for later purposes), you could just wipe the toys down with a soapy rag and the wipe with a wet clean one. They say it takes a minimum of 20 seconds to kill germs with soap and
water.

Edit: Per the cdc website, germs can live from 20 min. up to 2 hours on a hard surface.

The disinfectant above is all natural. I would rather be safe than sorry, especially with an infant.

What is good software for infants (6 months +)?

Q.

Answer
I would be surprised to see a 6 month old infant interested in any software.

I would focus on toys and human interaction for now.

But I'm sure if you search online, you will find software for 6 month old infants.

What are the best toys for a 6 month old?

Possibly something to help with learning to crawl.

Answer
In fact if youâre Christmas shopping with a infant in mind, you may find thereâs a boggling number of choices.

In the very early years safety is of special concern. A person wants to select well constructed toys, that are free of any sort of small parts that might potentially detach. Children at this age certainly will put toys in their mouths. Another reason one might also be concerned about the country of origin given the recent spate of tainted toys originating in China.

Toys for the the under one set are often aimed at emerging skills, such as fine and gross motor skills, tactile stimulation, etc.

Babies at 6 months are gaining the ability to sit up. And so toys that they can manipulate on the floor in front of them are attractive.

Babies between 6 and 12 moths of age will also begin to move (creep, crawl, take first steps) so there are many toys aimed at supporting this development too.

A few favorite suggestions:

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden First Vehicles Set
www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Deluxe-Wooden-Vehicles/dp/B000GKY2CQ

Sturdy first vehicles for small children. The size and weight are appropriate for very young children to grasp and carry. I find that many young children will spend endless amount of time pushing a small rolling toy around. These are toys that they are likely to play with for a good long while. I do not know what the country of origin is, Melissa & Doug is a favorite brand - some of their things are made in China, others in other Asian nations such as Vietnam.

Blocks
http://fatbraintoys.com/toy_companies/haba/fantasy_blocks.cfm
(Also available for sale thru various sellers on Amazon.com)

Blocks are also another great âgrow with me toyâ. Even very young children will enjoy a small set of colorful blocks which they can simply pick up and explore. These can be added to as the child grows into more sophisticated pretend and build play. Haba makes some beautifully whimsical blocks that are manufactured in Germany.

Sorters
www.amazon.com

Sorters come in, well, all âsortsâ of sizes, colors, and configurations for young kids. And are often treasured toys for kids between 6 mos and a year and a half or so. They love to place objects inside of something and dump them out again and again. Melissa and Doug make some toys they label as âfill and spillâ with cute themes (bugs in a jug, fishbowl, picnic baskets etc.). Thereâs also the old fashion âshape sortersâ and these come in many âthemesâ these days too. For examples, just try searching for âshape sorterâ or âfill and spillâ on Amazon.com.

If you are concerned about the nation of origin - I will note that FatBrainToys.com is one toy website that allows customers to conduct product searches that include not only age, gender, price, but also the country of origin (and it allows you to exclude China if you so wish).

How to help infants in the car?

Kate T

We are traveling 5 hours to upstate NY this weekend with a 3 year old and a 6 month old. The 3 year old is fine in the car, but the 6 month old screams the whole time. Does anyone have any suggestions as to help this? It is not car sickness or reflux, I think it is just boredom. Thanks a million for all of your help in advance.

Answer
My husband and I took a trip from MA to PA (6-7 hour trip) when my daughter was 10 months old. The best way we did it was to wake her up in the middle of the night (1:00am) start driving and let her fall back to sleep in the car. Then when she woke up at 6:00 we only had an hour or two left. We stopped and had breakfast, changed her and let her play for 20-30 minutes. When we got back in the car we only had 1 hour left and she was great.

We brought books and toys and don't forget the pacifier (bring a few so when he/she throws it you have more). Plus you have an added bonus, the 3 year old can sing songs and show pictures and toys to him/her. Teach the 3 year old to make faces to make the baby smile and sing baby songs. Give him a reward for helping you! Good Luck!

Tips for Traveling with 8 Mo Infant by Car (18 hours)?

ratigy24

I will be going to Iowa from Texas. Last time we traveled, it took approx 18 hours. It will be a long drive! I want my family to see my 8 month old son for the first time. Have any of you ever drove a long distance by car with an infant? How did they do? What did you do to keep them happy? We plan on stopping every couple of hours of course to change baby and get some exercise. How often did you stop? How well did your baby sleep? Any tips would be much appreciated!
THANKS GUYS!

Answer
Just came back from a 12 hours trip with my 8 months old baby. It was hard but very manageable. I prepared a bag for all her food and bottles that I brought in the car with us so that if she needed anything I could have it ready quickly. I also bought her a couple of small new toys and did not show them to her until the car ride. A little donught for baby's head to support neck while they sleep. My baby loved playing with the tags. Make frequent stops to take baby out of the car seat and stretch their back, they get tired of sitting there for too long. I also have a dvd player for my older daughter but brought along a couple of the Baby Einstein DVDs or Barney and put them on. Not more than half an hour at a time but it kept her busy. Don't know if you're planning to drive straight through or make a stop for the night but in our case, I found that stopping for the night helped us a lot, gave us a chance to rest and more importantly gave the baby a break from the car ride and a big change of scenery. By the way roller shades for the windows are very useful on long car rides to protect baby from the sun, especially in the summer months.
Hope this helps and have a wonderful and safe trip.

Twins are 6 months and still not sitting!?

Q. I have identical twin boys. Their due date was October 25, 2009 but instead they were born Oct 5. I am getting a little concerned because they are not rolling or sitting yet. When I go to sit them on their own [I put their hands in between their legs so that they can balance on themselves, if that makes since]. They MIGHT stay up for 1 sec, but they either end up leaning all the way forward [looking uncomfortable] or lean off to one of their sides. I know all babies are different but I was really thinking that 6 months I would have it a little easier as far as having to hold them all the time, I figure they would be nearing the early crawling stages by now. Never the less is there anything that i can do to "help" the learn to balance while sitting, or strengthen their backs. They have their 6 month check up next week, i just wanted to hear stories for several different parents.

Answer
My son turned 6 months last Saturday. He just rolled over for the first time Wednesday, and has done it about 40 times since then. He sits pretty well, I still put a boppy behind him to be safe because he will have his tumbles when he reaches for a toy.
I think its completely average. Bases on everything you read, especially on here you start to wonder if your child is behind.
Im a teacher in the infant room at daycare. There are 3, 6 month olds at work (one being mine)
Neither besides my son is CLOSE to sitting up what so ever.
1 of them rolled over when around 5 months, but has only done it a handle of times, seems more accidental.

Can you give me some ideas about my toy project?

Rock

Can you give me some ideas about my toy project?
I have to design a children's toy. I have to choose an age group, such as infant, 2-5 years, 6-8 years, 8-12 years, 13-14 years etc.
I have to be sure the toy is safe. It has to be a toy that nobody invented yet. The has to be safe as well. I have to make a toy that is enjoyable and also the child has to gain knowledge out of that. For example: My teacher showed me others toys that designed other people. One people drew a bus and on the bus, he put the alphabets. His illistration was-- if you press the buttons with a, b, c, it will say a and it will like it will shine, like you will be able to see light .

Now can you give me an idea, what could I design and how?.
Please help. I know some of my writing you will not undersatnd thats because I am new and I am learning english.
Please help me!!

Answer
i interned at a preschool for 5 months. ages varied from 3-6
there was no plastic toys there everything came from nature.
and the kids enjoyed playing with them.
from what i know abou child development, you should never really give a child a plastic toy because i prevents them from developing touch because plastic always feels the same. children like to feel if things are smooth or sharp, or the grooves of tree bark.
maybe that doesnt help but try to make something that kids can feel and determine whats going on. it is educational and enjoyable.

Advice for traveling with an infant..?

Momma to 4

Hello Everyone- We recently got a call that a very close uncle of mine has passed away. His funeral is Wednesday evening, so we will be traveling Tuesday. We have about a 5 hour drive to make. I have 2 daughters. A 26 month old & a 3 1/2 week old! We will be traveling with both girls. We have never taken a long trip with such young ones...
Any tips for traveling with an infant?!
Thanks!
She is formula fed... if that helps at all :)

Answer
First of all sorry for your loss.
My husband and I made a trip from Rich VA to Pittsburgh PA, with a 2 1/ yr old and a 3 week old. Even though my older baby was potty trained we put her in pull-ups just in case we could not get to a rest stop quick enough. For her we packed a back back of coloring books, reading books and some small toys. Also some juice sippy cups and crackers and snacks. For the 3 week old he was on formula, we had water already measured out in the bottles, when he needed to eat we mixed in the powdered formula. I would sit back there and keep him in his car seat with his seatbelt on to feed. I would quickly take him out of his seat just long enough for a burp, then put him back in and buckle him back up. As far as changing his diaper, when he peed I would unbuckle him leave him in his seat and change him then put the clean diaper on and re-bucklehim. When he pooped, we pulled over to a gas station or rest area.

For the most part babies at that young of an age 3 1/2 weeks get "put" to sleep when in a car anyway. So the baby will probably be the easier one. The older baby will probably get ancy and want to get out of the seat.

Good Luck and again I am sorry for you loss

i have my 15 mo.old baby for 24 hours flight to philippines...And need some advice for the people who have experience travelling with their kids...
What tips you can give to me on plane and airport?

Thanks...

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I now fly a lot internationally with my three children.

First of all, I hope you have whatever passport he or she needs. This can be a real headache with children. If you haven't tackled that, do so now and please be careful with the photo. Taking the correct child's picture can be tricky so get the full instructions from whichever country this concerns. If your child is a U.S. citizen, he or she will need that passport to re-enter the U.S., even they have another passport.

This can be a difficult age to travel. Toddlers love to run and hate to be confined. I do recommend that s/he have his/her own seat and that you bring his/her carseat along. Try to get an extra seat next to you if the flight isn't full and you haven't purchased a seat for your child. Ask very nicely for this at check in.

This is the only way to fly safely with any baby. Lap children are allowed because statistically, flying is so safe, there's very little chance of anything going wrong. If it does though, a lap child has no protection.

First check that your seat is approved by your airline. This is the link if you are flying a U.S. company;
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

For a non-U.S. company, check with your airline's website.

I will say that my toddlers were much more settled and much easier when they were in their familar seat. Not to scare you but some parents haven't been able to keep a hold of their little ones and have been "off loaded" as a result.

http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/2007-01-23-airtran_x.htm

I will admit that I've strapped down an unhappy little one more than once. Toddlers hate to be confined and simply don't understand that they have to be seated sometimes. Firmly anchored in, I could then consol them while we landed.

To get through the airport, they sell all sorts of gizmos like these;
http://www.gogobabyz.com/products/gogo_kids.html
http://www.amazon.com/Traveling-Toddler-Attach-Rolling-Carry/dp/B000JHN3AS
http://www.onestepahead.com/product/osa/363756.html

I simply use a small metal luggage cart with an extra bungee cord and it works great. I skip on the stroller and she can even ride in it. She usually prefers to walk and then I load the carry-ons aboard. Some parents are also able to wedge the seat in the stroller or bungee cord it to the back of the seat portion of their stroller.

Besides, taking your car seat onboard virtually guarentees that it'll be there at your destination. Checking them risks damage and loss. Wont you need it when you get there?

For entertainment, get him a new toy, anything and it doesn't have to be expensive. Keep it and give it to him or her once you're on the plane. My son at that age liked anything with wheels. Once, I simply had a package of plastic animals. Kept him busy for ages!

Play dough, stickers, anything to color with and simple toys like pinwheels are also recommended. Just make sure that they don't make ANY noise. Even a quiet toy can drive your fellow passengers batty. No one will mind if you read to your child though. Chunky books with flaps are fun for toddlers. These make good suprises on the aircraft.

I actually don't recommend a portable DVD player *unless* s/he can watch it without sound. I doubt s/he'll wear the headphones but try it at home. For such a long flight, I recommend a player with at least 5 hours playing time. Keep the light low to save battery time and bring a recharger with any adapters to recharge it on layovers.

Just some other small tips;
-Bring a change of clothes
-Bring way more diapers than you think you'll need
-Wrap extra diapers and clothes in plastic and tie with rubber bands to save space in your carry-on.
-Learn to change him or her standing up (don't try to fit him on those tiny babychangers and toddlers hate to lie down in strange places)
-Bring an empty sippy cup to fill during the services. This will prevent spills in the air.
-Get up and move around with him but keep an eye out. Those carts the F/A's use are the perfect height for hiding little ones
-Bring snacks. Don't fret security. I've never had anything taken away (yes, water but not snacks) and that's the only risk. If you have something not allowed, they simply remove the item. No scenes, no speeches, no arrests!
-Try to sit in a bulkhead seat so that there's no one in front of you
-Bring slippers, especially if you're not in the bulkhead!

The stroller can be "gate-checked", meaning that you will get a tag at the counter when you first check-in and then you can bring it to the door of the aircraft. Please ask if your stroller will be returned to you at the gate on any connections. When exiting the plane, if they are using more than one door, ask at which door are the strollers (usually with the wheelchairs). Bring a bungee cord and at the door of the aircraft, fold the stroller and double secure it with a bungee cord to prevent it from popping open en route. You can also cover it in a bag if you want.

It's actually a myth that children need to suck on something for take-off and landing. I rarely saw it in my 13 years as a Flight Attendant and with all the flights I've made with my children, I have never, ever done anything special with them for take-offs and landings.

ENT specialists simply recommend that the child is awake for landing;
http://www.entcda.com/AAOHNSF/earsandaltitude.htm

The delicate time is not during take-off or landing/touchdown but at the *top of descent*. This is usually 40 minutes to an hour before landing and everyone's ears have to reverse the pressurization. I can confirm that when I worked, if any passengers had ear problems, this was the time. Not just children either! They actualy felt *better* as we got closer to landing.

If you dive (which I thought of because I've gone diving in Borcay), you learned the same principal but in the opposite direction. Going down into the water is the same as going up in the air and vise versa. Just as a reminder, if you are a diver, don't do it within 24 hours of flying!

The BEST way to avoid ear issues is to take your little one to the doctor a few days before flying. My son was good at getting symptomless ear infections. The doctor will look in his or her ears and make sure they're clear and infection-free. Healthy ears can handle pressurization changes.

My son was 20 months old and slept just 20 minutes of an 11 1/2 hour flight. It was just so fun for him! Not so fun for mom but I survived... Even the calmest, most placid children are not good on planes at this age. Take heart. You're not alone.

It can be tempting to use some sort of medication to get a toddler to sleep on a long flight. I never have done this due to a family history of allergies but be aware that this is not rare. Sometimes children get the opposite reaction and I've seen this a couple of times when working. If you decide this would be a good idea, talk to your doctor and try it at home first.

For more information, I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with kids. It's totally non-commercial and other parents have contributed;

Both of you get plenty of sleep the night before and good luck!

Answer
1 baby bjorn with back support all the way! my dd loves it still at 9 mos, and will sleep in it when tired
2 graco quattro tour deluxe; convertible seat britax boulevard
3 baby italia lifestyle...http://www.buzzillions.com/4294967168_nz_crib_reviews--the one i have is the number one on their ratings--at least one or two more on the top ten is the same crib, just in different color
4 new clothes, we get a lot from babies r us, they are fairly close, not that expensive and clothes are cute...kohl's has some cute stuff at times, target is ok...not a big fan of walmart for clothes; secondhand is great, they always look new if you go to a consignment shop; the one we have doesn't take anything but brand name with no stains, etc.. and they are cheap! they grow fast enough, that i wish i had known about this sort of thing and about craigslist, freecycle, etc when i was pregnant, would have saved me tons of money!!
5 patchwork pooh, it's beautiful and could be used for either sex..
6 we love lamaze! their baby mirror is great compared to other brands, has a foam wedge instead of a stand like a pic, so it doesn't get knocked over so easy, the big contrasting prints she likes so much that i can take the mirror off and she will play with the wedge!
7 primo euro tub; it has support to hold a nb in place for washing, and the other side has a place to support a baby that can sit and you can put in a little water to wash nb, or make it deeper for a baby that can sit and play..they come in different colors too..

http://www.amazon.com/Primo-340W-PRIMO-EuroBath-Pearl/dp/B000056OV0/ref=pd_cp_ba_1?pf_rd_p=413863701&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000G3CXW4&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0SW337MQP1G04B517WB5
8 we use johnsons body wash, reg, purple and cocoa butter...
9 any kind before they are walking just to keep their feet warm in winter, when they start walking they recommend barefoot inside so they can develop their feet muscles and their balance....and if out when walking, a soft soled shoe like robeez, umi, etc....nike also makes a baby shoe that has a soft leather bottom...
10 i only bought a few bc i was already staying at home; i had some sweats that fit and a pair of jeans or two and some cute tops, one bluejean overall pair of shorts.....you can get them anywhere, my friend that worked said that burlington coat factory had cute good priced clothes, but i never needed more, so i didn't look myself..
hope all this helps!!

Please help me shop for my new baby daughter.?

Wookie

I am pregnant with a daughter. :) very excited that it was a girl. (God granted my wish ) HAHA- Anyway, i am new to this motherhood thingy, i am just wondering what should i prepare for my daughter, what are the important things that i should be getting for her?? i am 21 weeks pregnant..

Answer
well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don't need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it...the things i liked;found most useful, etc......

.i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don't like them, there is NO smell in my dd 's room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves....i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available...
monitor--i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference....it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don't fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd's bottom
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper...desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it....infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period...brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes...wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom...
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby's bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash....and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy--we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a 'pocket' up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there...
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down...very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support...not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys--she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don't get lost in the wash...
something to put baby toys in
extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan....
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it's where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now...LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don't have to haul the bigger one

if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later...i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles--really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it's easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off...and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby's milk; they will leak if you don't put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking...:O)
bottle and nip brushes--i really like the ones by munchking that don't have a sponge on the end of the brush, they come in diff colors mixed with white and have a great nip brush in the handles....
drying racks--again, i really like munchkins...
formula mixer: i like dr brown's formula pitcher bc you don't shake it it is only about sixteen bucks i think and it mixes it without bubbles and foam and you can make enough for 24 hrs at the ti
