6 months old baby question?

Tara K

I am starting to do a little Christmas shopping for my daughter who is 4 months old now, but she will be a day short of 6 months on Christmas day, so my questions is what was your 6 month old able to do? I mean like could they crawl, roll over, sit on their own, etc... I want to get her toys that she will be able to use at 6 months. Thanks.

Answer
I would say toys that light up and or make noise. Something she can bang on.
My 6 month old could sit up, roll over on her own. She could not crawl, but was close. She did get around by rolling or scooting.
Go to fisher price.com they have a good web site you can review the toy options.

What is your 6 month old baby's favorite toy?

Best convertable infant car seat for compact car?

T P

My daughter is 9 months and about 18 pounds(preemie) and is quickly outgrowing hergraco carrier.I have a small car- a 2 door hatch back Ford Focus,so my main issue is finding one that will fit my car.
Anyone have any suggestions for a good, small convertable car seat? Id like to be able to use it for a long time and dont want to have to buy another any time soon.

Thanks!

Answer
Car accidents are the #1 killer of children under age 12. Another person said that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends to age 2 and the NHSTA recommends until age 3. I believe that all children should rearface as long as possible. This also means that you should keep on buying a higher weight limit rearfacing seat.

5 children in the United States die every single day due to incorrect use of car seats or not using car seats at all.

I would recommend any car seat that fits your vehicle, your child, and is used correctly each and every time.

To achieve this, car seats must be installed with less than one inch of movement from side to side. 1 inch is the maximum amount of movement. I would get the car seat in your car rock solid. The car seat fits your child (when rearfacing) when the harness straps are at and below your childs armpit level AND when the child's head is one inch away from the shell. If the child's head is above the car seat, then the child will be exposed to injury because our American seats are not tethered rearfacing and they do not have foot props to prevent downward rotational force.

Please note that since your daughter is now 9 months old, her convertible car seat can be installed at a more upright angle.

I would recommend the Radian RXT or R120 as this can rearface up to 45 lbs and has a top slot of 17.5 inches. It is an extremely narrow seat, so if you ever need to fit three car seats in a row, this is the car seat for you. But anyhow, the amount of room it takes up is a little extreme, which can be remedied by installing at in at a more upright angle in the middle seat as the car seat could fit between the 2 front seats, but the downside is that you may be unable to install the car seat in the center seat with LATCH. LATCH is basically metal hooks that hold crash forces of a car seat and the car seat is attached to the car by these hooks, instead of using the seat belt. If your car manual doesn't say that you can use latch in the center seating position, then you CANNOT use latch. Latch anchors are connected to each other and will fail. I would go to toys r us and test out the seat in your 2 door vehicle.

Rear facing seats:
Radian RXT (45 lbs rear facing)
Britax Marathon, Boulevard, or Advocate- (16.75 inch top slot as advertized by britax and up to 40 lbs rearfacing) I'm not sure if I would recommend the use for a small car because they are extremely bulky, but if you could get it to fit, it would install like a breeze due to the lock off it has built in.
Safety First Compass True Fit- has an 18" high top slot (up to 40 lbs rear facing)

I wanted to let you know that the Swedish have the lowest child fatalities in car accidents because of their rear facing car seats. They rear face their children up to 4 or 5 years of age or whenever the child outgrows their rear facing seats. Their seats go up to 50 or 55 lbs! They accomplish this by having 2 rearfacing tethers and a foot prop to accomodate larger taller children. Because of the foot prop and tethers, taller children are able to use the seat until the tips of the ears are even with the headrest or shell. American seats will never be able to accomplish this weight limit because they are not allowed by US Standards to have support from the seat with tethers and foot props. The rules is that the seat must be able to measure up to standards with only the seat belt supporting it. There have been only 5 or so cases of children in Sweden who have died in a car crash in a span of 2 years! Rear facing is safest and is meant for everyone!

Also, Swedish car seats can be installed at up to 10 degrees from vertical, to allow more room. It is actually slightly safer to be at a more upright angle. The only reason why newborns are at 45 degrees, is to support their necks.

Switching baby from infant car seat to full size car seat.. toy solution?

DanerBug

My baby loved playing with the toys dangling from the handle of the infant car seat. Now that he's in a full size car seat I haven't figured out how to have toys dangling for him to play with. Does anyone have a solution for this?
I should clarify he's 8 months old and the car seat is rear facing. If I just gave him toys to play with he'd toss them. I was hoping to find some kind of bar that could be attached to the car seat but I couldn't find anything.

Answer
Most cars have a handle, that I guess is to be used to aid you in getting out of the car, just above the window. I hang toys from there

what are the most important areas in a classroom setting for infants/toddlers?

Blanca

Dramatic area, art area etc.

Answer
Well, the good thing about infant/toddler daycare rooms is that there doesn't need to be a lot of fuss. Unless you want an unholy mess and 25 kids covered in finger paint, I wouldn't recommend an arts station. Usually, an area with toys is good, an area with tables to eat lunch is good, and a cubby area to hold toys from home, coats, etc. Some places like to break up play areas by the age groups; the daycare I worked at separated the 1 year olds from the 2-3 year olds for lunch and naptime. As long as you have a lot of toys and a playground outside, the kids will pretty much entertain themselves between mealtimes and naptime. :)

what do you think an infant -toddler program should be like?

jada@sbcgl

Answer
Not sure if you are talking about day care or a "Mommy and me" type of program. In either case, you need some short (5-10 minute) activities. Have enough toys that very young toddlers won't have to share. Sharing should be gently encouraged, but not forced. Allow some time for parallel play, where children are near each other but doing different activities. Use a lot of music: all kinds are OK, doesn't have to be just kid songs. Classical music is excellent. Rhythm band instruments are great for toddlers!

What would you get an infant girl about 6 months old for Christmas?

ougal

Answer
At 6 months, it isn't a present for the child. The infant won't know it is a present. It is a present to the parents. At 6 months, perhaps a toy that makes noises or plays a nursery rhyme. Perhaps a chewing toy since gums are pretty itchy at the time. Winter is approaching so perhaps soft warm flannel crib sheets. The infant needs lots of wash cloths, sleepers, 1-sies.

Whatever you get for her, give the both of you a present by holding her in your arms. Make funny faces. Make baby sounds. It will make your heart and her heart leap with joy.

If a boy was brought up as a girl?

Random

What do you think would happen if you gave a normal little boy only girl toys to play with and they only played girls?

Do you thinks babies play with girl or boy toys because they are given to them or because they instinctively play with their gender's toys?
Hey, Greydoc can you allow email; I want to ask you something.

Answer
A small fraction of infants are born with ambiguous genitalia, that is, you can't be certain if they are male or female. Another term for this is intersex. Chromosome testing usually settles the issue. However, it is easier to surgically transform the child into a female. This was standard procedure from the 1950s to the 1980s. Prominent psychologists confirmed that if you reared a child as a female, the child will naturally assume a female identity.

As it turns out, the psychologists were wrong. Further study of these individuals reveals a broad spectrum of reactions, but many persons with intersex, especially those who were chromosomally males, do not have a female orientation in adulthood. Consequently, there has been a major shift in gender assignment policy in infancy.

Now for your second question. Babies will play with whatever toys are given them. As they become toddlers, most will gradually develop a preference with gender specific toys. Both nature and nurture play a role in this.

are you giving your infant a easter basket?

lorenzo an

i want to get one for my son but hes only 9 months old and does not eat candy and i dont want to cheap toys for him.

i want to make it myself what do you suggest i add to it?

are you making one for your little one(s) ? what are you putting into theirs?

Answer
I have a 2 month old boy, and I just put him together his Easter basket. I know that it's silly because he doesn't even know what it is, but it was so much fun. I filled it with socks and toys and pacifiers- stuff he needs. The thought of doing this every year from now on, planning surprises, watching him unwrap gifts makes me feel so happy to be a mom. I can't wait until he actually knows what Easter is. My parents made flour bunny prints across the kitchen floor and left a half-eaten carrot next to our baskets when I was younger, and I can't wait to do that stuff for my son. Just put stuff you would buy for him anyway in the basket- bubble bath, clothes, whatever you want.

This is for a class:

1. Is the store divided based on gender, race, age, etc? Are there male and female sections for merchandise? What kind of "sections" are there?

2. For the male and female section, rate the merchandise on a scale of 1-5, 1 being low 5 being high on:
1.cognitive development
2.motor development
3.imagination growth
4. price and durability

3. What are some examples of toys from each category above, and how do they rank on a scale of 1-5 individually?

4.Where in the store are the scientific and discovery toys? (toy laptops, etc)

Answer
1. Ages and then gender specific.

Main Departments: Preschool & Infants Toy, Imaginarium (educational toys), Boys, Girls, Rzone (video games & home electronics),Outdoors & Sports, and Babies R Us.

Traveling with an infant?

brittany

In a few weeks I'll be traveling to the west coast. Not only is this my first plane ride but I will have my toddler wit me as well. Does anyone have any tips or advice they can give me.

Answer
Brittany,

Since you will be traveling with a young child on a longer plane ride it is very important that you be prepared for the unexpected.

Be sure to pack enough extra clothes, diapers, food and drink items for your child.

Keeping your child occupied while at the airport and then on the plane will be your biggest challenge.

I am not sure what time of day you will be traveling but it might be a good idea to travel around your child's nap time. However, it may not matter because all the new sites and people around will keep your child very occupied so it may be hard to get your child to nap.

If you child is walking, I would recommend that while you are waiting at the airport try to walk your child around a little bit and point out some interesting sites. You will want to try to keep them occupied while at the same time tire them out. This way once things settle down on the airport you child may be so pooped out that they will fall asleep.

I would recommend bringing toys that can entertain your child but at the same time not disturb the other passengers as much.

Also you may want to plan ahead and see if you can reserve a seat toward the back of the plane. This way you will be near the bathroom in case it is needed and also will have a little more room if you need to get up and rock your child.

A window seat may also work to help occupy your child if you are traveling during the day as during take off and landing they will have something to look at through the window.

I am not sure if you child watches any TV yet, I know it is hard at that age as kids do not have a long attention span. But you could also try bringing along a DVD player to watch some movies. Or if you have a smartphone, there are plenty of You Tube videos on there with short cartoon clips to keep your child somewhat occupied.

How these tips help and good luck!

My 1 year old wakes up at 4 am and screams, and he won't stop until we get him. How can I make it stop.?

Wardinger

Answer
Did GSU *REALLY* just call your child a pet? Your child is not a pet. Don't follow that advice and treat it like one. How insulting!

Don't leave your child alone when they are screaming at night. The reason the child might stop is because they have lost trust in you. Why would you want that?

The first stage of Erikson's theory on development is "Trust vs. Mistrust." The infant and toddler stages are a time for the child to realize that, when they need you the most, you are going to be there for them. If you loose that developmental stage at this point, it will carry through for the rest of their lives.

Let me say that again - If you loose that developmental stage at this point, it will carry through for the rest of their lives.

What kind of toys does your child have in his crib? A stuffed animal and a toy similar to these:

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2011&e=detail&selcat=bgtoys&pid=34168

may help him if he wakes up. He may be able to keep himself occupied and not become as afraid.

If you wear perfume, try lightly scenting a blanket with it and leaving it in his crib. Smell is the strongest association senses. That may help him quite a bit.

Does he have any lighting or is the room pitch black? Try a night light as this may help him feel more comfortable.

Remember that, at this age, if a child cannot see you, they might think you are no longer there. They do not necessarily have a concept yet that if you're not in their vision or sight of any of the other senses, you still exist. He is crying out of fear sometimes that he is alone. Give him the reassurance every time that you are there when you hear him. It is a LOT!!! of work, but the payoff is there in knowing you are doing what is best for your child.

I hope the other suggestions help some.

Matt

Are you going to circumcise your baby boy?

Proud Momm

Why or why not?

Answer
No national or international medical association recommends routine circumcision.

No. It is a cosmetic surgery, medically unnecessary. It is extremely painful (see the video link at the end of my message). Genital Integriy, Intact Genitals, Rights to an Intact Body are for all.

If you are religious, "God Designed. Mother Approved. Revision is Circumcision"

Every baby boy on the planet is born with a foreskin and yet very few have them removed. The foreskin is a perfectly normal natural body part.

It is illegal to circumcise baby girls. Would you be asking this question if your baby is a girl? The answer is probably no. So, the answer to would "I amputate normal healthy body parts of my baby boy,at the risk of death, perform cosmetic elective surgery on my perfect newborn?" The answer is no.

Doctors tell you the amputated Lie when it comes to Circumcision. I beg you to learn the WHOLE TRUTH.

Every YEAR, more than 100 babies die from Circumcision. If this was a product, a toy, a crib, stroller, bottle for sale, on the market, for babies, it would have been recalled long ago.

Here is a video made by doctors for doctors on circumcision.

Here is a another link containing the actual surgical procedures of circumcision

â¢No national or international medical association recommends routine circumcision.

â¢Only the USA circumcises the majority of newborn boys without medical or religious reason.

â¢Medicalized circumcision began during the 1800s to prevent masturbation, which was believed to cause disease.

â¢Today's parents are learning that the foreskin is a normal, protective, functioning organ.

â¢Today's parents realize circumcision harms and has unnecessary risks.

â¢Circumcision denies a male's right to genital integrity and choice for his own body.

My 12 year old show's absolutely no emotions when watching things that the rest of us cry over.?

Missymae

I have an amazing daughter who will be 12 next week. She has always been the light in our eye, but in some sadness she has been different. When an infant she could not figure out the shape sorter toy. She would get highly stressed over it and throw it. She would stare off into space for several seconds. We seen a neurologist who did multiple tests and came back no seizures. She struggles in school sometimes. went threw a spell of complete OCD she has never played with doll babies or barbies, because??? she gets easily frustrated with her sister who loves to play. She doesn't understand or comprehend why my other daughter is making her dolls talk.. when i have a group of girls over her age and her sisters they all play but my daughter just sits back over whelmed. complain its stupid. About a month ago we watched My sisters' keeper. Total tear jerk type of movie. My youngest and I are in tears, my oldest looks at me and says " why are you crying?'. Today I rented Where the Red fern grows. Again we are all balling and my oldest doesn't seem affected by it at all. Is this normal?

Now when it comes to real life things that she has emotions for.. they are above and beyond. My 81 year old grandma whom she is overly close with, has not been doing well. My daughter has completely pushed her self away. They used to be best friends, when grandma fell the other day my daughter could not go into the house, she sat out side balling and puking. Are these normal behaviors or is there something deeper? I don't want to put her into the mental health classification if it is not needed. Thank you for listening to my rant!
My daughter has never played with barbies or babies EVER!

Answer
It doesn't completely sound like a mental health issue. I mean there are some signs of maybe a slight mental health issues but it could be little things like learning Disabillities. But she's a girl and growing up. The movies might not effect her because she doesn't truly know the people she has no real relation to them. So it doesn't phase her like her grandmother does. She could be pushing away because she is terrified of losing her grandmother. So she is trying to protect herself. As for having the girls over to play and hangout and she Is not engaging she just might not be a big people person. Instead of a big group start her off small may e one friend twice a week. Then gradually move forward. So she becomes comfortable. If your truly worried I say get her tested for dyslexia and other learning problems once you've ruled those out talk to your daughter see what she thinks make her keep a journal about how she feels so you can get an insight to her mind and you know maybe get her checked for an acute down syndrome. I'm not implying age has any of these so please don't think I'm trying to be rude. Or put your daughter down. I promise I am not but for your sake and your families sake try and start ruling out all possibilities. And it could just be that's her personality she is very comfortable with being on her own and doesn't need other people. But please keep and open mind and give her lots of love.

About hedgehogs?

carpetshar

Ok, I have a few questions about hedgehogs:
1) How do you hold those things!? I've never even touched one but i've seen them in pet stores and i've watched videos on youtube and i see people hold them also while they are on thier backs! Doesn't that hurt your hand? How do the quills feel? Does it break skin?

2) Do they have any personality? No offense but they sem kinda....i don't know either sleepy or....stupid all the time or something....?

4) I've heard of different colored hedgehogs but they all seem like the same color to me. What are the different colors of them?

3) How are they as pets? Tell me everything you know about them!
Thank you!
Oops! I mixed up 3 and 4 my bad!
Also, do they poop a lot? if I were to let one run around my room or soemthing how often would it go to the bathroom?

Answer
1) It takes a bit of practice to get used to holding a hedgehog. When they are on their backs in your hands, their weight is evenly distributed amongst all their quills so they do not put a lot of pressure to hurt, let alone break skin. It feels kind of weird, I would compare it to dry grass or hay. When a hedgie is relaxed in your palm, it shouldn't hurt. If you are holding a huffy hedgie, it will hurt a bit just because their quills are pointing in multiple directions. I have had hedgehogs for many years now and have never had a problem with cuts or punctures from hedgie spines. Some people with sensitive skin have reported a speckly rash from hedgie quills, but this is kind of rare and doesn't happen to the majority.

2) I have had 25+ hedgies live here at one time or another and I must say that I have noticed some obvious personalities with them. They are not like dogs. They are not pack animals, they prefer solitary, so for this reason they do not seem to respond to humans which is why they may come off as sleepy. Being nocturnal, they should be sleepy during the day which is when you probably saw them in the pet store. At night however, they do have their quirks and let their little personalities shine.

4) In the wild, there would have only been one colour - or two if you count albinism. Years of selective breeding and spontaneous mutation has led to lighter colours and different patterns. The most popular colours are Chocolate, Brown and Grey which are often lumped together and referred to as 'Salt and Pepper' or 'Standard'. Lighter colours are Cinnamon, Apricot and Cinnicot. Some patterns that occur in all of these colours are pinto, snowflake and white. There are countless combinations and many other shades of these basic colours.

3) Hedgehogs make great pets for any person who is busy during the day and home in the evening to care for them when they are waking up. Although start up is expensive, they are pretty low maintenance to keep afterwards.

They need spacious cages with an exercise wheel to keep them at an appropriate weight and they eat a diet of high quality/low fat cat food supplemented with mealworms, cooked chicken, veggies and other treats. They should never be fed commercial hedgehog foods... it is not properly formulated for domestic hedgehogs.

The bedding should be aspen shavings, carefresh or fleece liners and they should have toys to keep them mentally stimulated. Toilet paper tubes, cat toys, infant toys, etc... are all appropriate for hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs are prone to mites, cancer and wobbly hedgehog syndrome and require regular veterinary attention to keep them healthy.

If you are looking to get a hedgie as a pet, use this info as a starting point and keep researching elsewhere. Also, please buy from a breeder. Animals in pet stores are often inbred and have a high chance of developing disease. Should you buy from a breeder, you will also be buying from a knowledgeable individual who can help you with any questions you may have later down the line. Here are some sites you can use during your research:

Chins & Quills forum: http://www.chins-n-quills.com/forums/

Hedgehog Central: http://www.hedgehogcentral.com/ (*has a list of breeders and veterinarians in North America and Europe, as well as information on care)

Good luck!

Is it necessary (or worth it) to by an infant walker?

Maryam

My nine month old has taken her first steps (she can walk for about 3 steps on her own).
I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to get her the Activity Walker.
Is it a good investment?
Will it help her learn to walk?

I'm just worried that it'll be an extra item to clutter the house.
I don't mean the ones that a baby sits in. I got one of those as a gift and I hate it. I mean the push along ones.

Answer
Get a push and ride toy.

My guys LOVED walking around with theirs. And once they hit 18 months or so, they can ride them for another year until they are ready for a tricycle!

Push and ride toys are worth it. And it is 2 toys in 1. Both pretty important and well loved toys.

good toys for a 7 month old?

Amber H

my little girl just turned 7 months old and seems to need something to keep her entertained. she gets bored so fast any suggestions? she is way rotten and always wants to be held!
She doesn't like her jumper, her little feet barely reach. And they do not reach when she is in her walker at all!

Answer
Great age! Jolly Jumper, a walker (if it's safe where you are), any toy with lights an music, like an infant radio with big buttons and bright lights. A toy drum to whack at, little Nerf balls to throw. Crinkly toys and very tactile toys are terrific too!

Seven months is a great age for throwing, banging, crinkling, jumping and practicing walking (if you're 'pro walker toys' that is).

I'd go shopping with ya, but I'm probably about 9 zillion miles away - I hope this helps hon!

*Edit - oh yes, the Leapfrog table (with removable legs), great fun on the floor, for practicing pulling up, and also goes along well with the Jolly Jumper too!

my 9 and half month old son.... is about 22LB and he hates his car seat?

gisele_hom

what kind of car seat/bran name/style do you segest..please help

Answer
First off, don't ever put any hard toys on a baby's seat, nor a TV! OUCH in a crash or even a speed bump. My first question would be how reclined is he? If he is still in an infant carrier, you can't change the 45 degree recline angle, but in a rear facing convertible car seat, you can adjust it a little bit. Newborns must have a 45 degree angle recline to prevent their head falling forward and closing off their airway, but an older baby only needs 30-45 degrees recline. He may want to be able to see more than he can right now. So I'd look into that first off. Put some static clings on the rear windshield and back side windows to give him something to look at. Play music for kids, or better yet, talk and sing to him. He may just not like his seat, he may be bored, he may be scared b/c he can't see you.

Put one of those mirrors so you can see him. I had a mirror securely attached (with several safety pins to make sure it would not become a projectile in an accident) to the rear headrest so he could see himself, also, I put on of those baby view mirrors below my rear view mirror so I could see his reflection in his mirror in my mirror without turning around while driving (which isn't safe!) You may have to try several different models of mirrors (for his headrest) until you find one that works securely with your car.

He may really just not like car rides right now. In that case, minimize travelling for a little bit till he gets over it, which he soon will! Aim to travel at his best times of the day, morning for most babies, only go when he's eaten, well-rested, and in a good mood. It will make the trip easier for both of you.

Please DON'T get the Safety1st 3-in-1/Cosco Alpha Omega/Eddie Bauer 3-in1 seats. These are all the same company - same seat, just different covers. They stink. Hard to install, b/c of narrow belt paths. Ever tried to wash a skinny cup by hand? Now imagine that skinny cup with pointy edges. That's what putting your hand through these to install them is like. AND they have too short a shell to really go to 40lbs. And they do not make good boosters. Also, most kids have to use boosters until they're at least 8 years old. Car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, so no matter what they say it is NOT the last seat you'll ever need to buy. Not a good choice.

If you think padding might help, some great choices (and best bang for your buck, too!) are:
The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17", harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn't have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. It's one of only 2 seats that does this (The Britax Boulevard is the other, I believE), and it has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. No more tugging straps to tighten them either. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. As a major bonus, it can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode. Awesome for kids who still sleep in the car. I LOVE THIS SEAT! LOL My son, who is too big for every other car seat at Walmart has the same amount of room in this as the Britax Marathon.

The Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathalon (These 3 are the same seat, just different variances of luxury additions, with the Marathon being the cheapest base model) can be found for regular price of $269, and on sale at Albee Baby online for $209-$219. The Marathon a wide open easy to route belt path, which makes using it correctly a lot easier, as do the built in lockoffs, which mean you never again have to use a locking clip. I can get it into 4 different vehicles in under 2 minutes. Because of the way the base is made, it fits in most cars. And, it is worth the money, b/c it lasts usually twice as long as most other car seats (all car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture) lasting a baby till they are 5-6 years old, where most at Walmart will only last till 2-4 years old. Rear faces to 33lbs, then forward to 65lbs. and top slots 17inches tall, lasts most kids to ages 5-6 years old.

Whatever you do, don't turn him forward facing! It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (see sources) that ALL babies stay rear facing as long as possible, up to the weight/height limits of their seat. Most seats go to 30lbs rear facing, some go higher, check your manual. They are too tall for an infant carrier when the head is within an inch of the top of the shell. Too tall for most convertible seats when their ears reach the top of the seat. Has nothing to do with how long their legs are! There isn't a single documented case of a child breaking their legs b/c they were rear facing in an accident. There are, however, lots of cases where children have been killed and seriously injured where a rear facing seat would have protected them better. They are safest rear facing b/c their bones have not yet completed the ossification process that bonds/hardens them like adults. They need the bracing support that a rear facing seat offers to withstand a crash. 20lbs AND 1 year is the bare minimum as far as the law is concerned, but the law is the bare minimum of safety, and who wants to do the bare minimum for their child? A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 4 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age. A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.

I am starting an in-home daycare in Jan 2011, but interviewing parents now. Should I make them pay a deposit?

Hailey B

My daycare opens Jan 3rd. But I am beginning to interview now and I have been flooded with calls. I am starting to interview on Monday if the parents decide to go with me should I make them put down a deposit to hold their child's spot so I know they are serious? If so how much per child and should I put it towards their first week of care or should i keep it and put it towards daycare odds and ends? My full-time rates are as follows. Infant (6wks-12months)- $110/week, Toddler (12months-2years)- $115/week, Preschool (2-5years) $120/week, School aged (5-12years)- $100/week Hope this info helps!!!

Answer
Usually you can charge a "Materials Fee" - many private schools do this as well as daycares. It pays for arts and crafts supplies, books, even toys.

Consider the fact though that you aren't up and running yet though - so there's nothing the parents can even see. It might be important to have a little good faith with them like they're having with you.

will a nissan rogue fit three car seats?

raeann k

I have a 6 and 5 year old in two booster seats and just found out i'm expecting.. Will a 2011 Nissan Rogue fit 2 boosters and an infant car seat comfortably or should i start looking around for something bigger

Answer
Congratulations!

It totally depends on what seats your children will be riding in and in what positions.

Many parents have successfully installed three car seats across as shown here: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=33226

I would look into the Chicco Key Fit 30 infant car seat as it is typically narrower than other infant car seats. Usually the KeyFit works best when installed in the center. Another option is using a convertible car seat straight from birth. Look at the lowest bottom slots measuring about 8 inches or less to ensure the harness straps can be adjusted at or below the baby's shoulders.

The Diono Radian is the narrowest car seat on the market that measures about 14" across the thighs and 17" wide at the shoulders. It is typically outgrown around age 3-5 rear facing and another two to three years forward facing. This means that it will be the last harnessed car seat your child will need. It is spendy, but it is indeed worth it. The Radian R100 can typically be found on sale on amazon for around $207: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=diono+radian+r100

A newborn needs their car seat in at at a 45 degree angle to keep their airway open and the Radian does take up a ton of front to back space in the vehicle. You could try installing it in the center seat and have the top part of the Radian fan between the two front vehicle seats. Or you could have the Radian installed behind the passenger seat, but have no one sit in the front passenger seat until your baby gets some head control. When your infant is older, you can always used the angle adjuster by Diono to get the seat more upright.

You can always use the Chicco KeyFit 30 then get the Diono Radian later so you don't have to eat the dashboard. It is completely up to you =]

But I have to warn you- boosters can be difficult to buckle in a three across situation. You might get some scraped knuckles, but it is indeed do-able.

Also, if you do install in the outboard seating position for the infant seat, installing with the seat belt generally gives you more room. When installing it with the seat belt, the car seat can be scooted closer to the door. The seat just needs to be installed with less than an inch of movement. The KeyFit 30 has a built in lock-off to aid seat belt installs.

My best advice for you is to go to Toys R Us and try out car seats and different combinations. If you are installing a car seat in the center position in the back seat, LATCH cannot be used as they aren't reinforced in the center (unless your vehicle manual says specifically that they can be used in the center). The lower anchors on the side seating positions are connected by a metal bar; this is (usually) not found in the center.

What is the best teething toy to give my infant?

Gann

Those plastic rings you put in the fridge are not working.

Answer
The Best Teething Toys

By Miebeth Bustillo-Booth, ChildTrek Founder

Natural & Wood Teethers
The best teething toys are made of natural materials like wood. Wood is naturally anti-bacterial. (Thatâs why there are wooden cutting boards.) So it is self-cleaning. Wood is hard and will help ease teeth in. But not all wood toys are ideal. The best wooden teething toys are either unfinished or lightly finished with beeswax, water-based stains, or other non-toxic paints. Itâs best to gain the manufacturer statements to this effect. At ChildTrek, only toys that have met or exceeded safety standards are available.

Great Teething Toys
Grabbing Toy Giraffe with Wooden Teething Ring by Kathe KruseConsider the Infant Grabbing Toy Mah or Giraffe by Kathe Kruse. They are made out of non-porous beech wood, lightly finished with beeswax, and made using non-toxic dyes. There are no harmful chemicals to leach out while your baby gnaws on the hard wood. The wooden ring is extra large for easy handling by small hands. The lamb and the giraffe can be removed for machine or hand wash. And they are completely adorable!

The Grabbing Star Red or Blue also by Kathe Kruse has a wooden teething ring and interesting textures for early learning stimulation. A special feature is a velcro loop at one of the star ends so that it can be fastened as a stroller toy. This achieves a couple of things: the teether is always nearby and it doubles as a grabbing toy. Smart!

Girali Rattle by SelectaThe Girali Rattle by Selecta, aside from being a practical teething toy, is uniquely beautiful. It is made of native woods from Germany and finished with beeswax and non-toxic paints - completely safe for your baby.

Also, itâs hard to beat the Cherry Rattle by Camden Rose. It is lightly finished with beeswax. Its contoured design makes for interesting tactile stimulation. Its gentle rattle is soothing. As a teether - it is naturally hard to facilitate teething. Watch as your baby gnaws on this beautiful toy for hours.

Cold and Soothing
Organic Vegetabe Teethers by Under the NileOne of my personal favorites for the summer are the organic teethers by miYim and Under the Nile. Take the Bunny, Elephant, or Bear teether. Dampen, not soak it. Put it in the freezer. Then let your baby gnaw on this cool toy to help soothe tender gums. Do the same for the Fruits or the Vegetables by Under the Nile. Besides gently soothing for your baby, you are teaching your baby to âeatâ his or her fruits and veggies!

Vary Teethers
Itâs best to keep a few different teethers around that have varying textures and hardness. Some teeth come in easier than others. The molars, for example, are especially hard on infants.

Check out ChildTrekâs selection of ideal teething toys.

teething??

Q. my son is 5 months old and has been crying all day. I put my finger in his mouth and at the bottom front was really sharp. does that mean the tooth is coming or has it popped the skin already? when will it actually be an obvious tooth?

Answer
Teething is the process during which an infant's teeth start to sequentially grow in. Teething can start as early as three months or as late, in some cases, as twelve months. Occasionally a baby may even present with one or more teeth at birth. The typical time frame for new teeth to appear is somewhere between six and nine months. It can take up to several years for all 20 deciduous (aka "baby" or "milk") teeth to emerge. The process of teething is sometimes referred to as "cutting teeth".

The infant teeth tend to emerge in pairs - first one upper incisor emerges then the other upper incisor emerges before the next set begin to emerge. The general pattern of emergence is:

Lower central incisors
Upper central incisors
Upper lateral incisors
Lower lateral incisors
First molars
Canines
Second molars
Milk teeth tend to emerge sooner in females than in males. The exact patterns and initial starting times of teething appear to be hereditary. When and how teeth appear in an infant has no bearing on the healthiness or developmental ability of the child.

During teething, the new teeth are breaking through the surface of the gums. Signs of teething may include

Poor mood
Loss of appetite
Chewing of objects
Bruises/swelling in gums
Excess salivation
Teething has not been shown to cause fever. A slight rise of temperature may occur when the teeth come through the gum. But it does not make a baby ill.

Infants chew on objects to aid in the teething process. This can be dangerous if the baby is allowed to chew on objects which are small enough to be swallowed or which could break while being chewed, creating a risk of choking. Teething rings and other toys are often designed with textures that will appeal to an infant during teething.

In cases where the infant is in obvious pain, some doctors recommend the use of anti-inflammatories or child-safe pain-relief treatments containing benzocaine. Some infants gain relief from chewing on cold objects.

Dentists recommend brushing infants' teeth as soon as they appear. It is not necessary to wait for the teething process to complete. Dentists may recommend against the use of fluoride toothpaste during teething.

infants first airplane trip?

love my st

my boyfriend and i plan on flying to florida from wyoming in december. and im worried about my daughter by then she will be 9 1/2 months. what are the concerns of there ears! and what are ways to prevent it. i have googled it but i keep getting a few different answers and i want just one accurate answer! thanks so much.. also its a 3 hour flight she is entertained fairly easy so i dont think i have to worry about it.. and what is some advice other moms would like to give about there flights?

thanks

Answer
i flew with my son who was 18 months at the time, from california to hawaii and back.

no problems whatsoever with the ears. his pedi. said if it was going to bother him it would be at landing, but we didnt have any issues.

if her ears seem to be bothering her, you could try giving her a bottle or a pacifier (cringe) to help with the pressure.

be sure to bring a change of clothes for her, blanket, a few favorite toys, food, diapers and wipes and youre good to go.

Qatar airways giving toys to passengers with infant?

Eternity a

When my parents came back here with my baby sister ( she's born in Qatar so she was sent here) from Qatar. They brought home Some blindfold and a little vibrating stuffed airplane. Why did they give that to them? And What's its purpose? :-?
I meant that the Flight attendants gave that to them... and i tested it and it only vibrates! :/

Answer
Most major international airlines does give some toys or drawing pad with crayons to passengers with children or infants.

The main purpose is to keep children entertained on a long-haul flight with the toys or activity amenities given by the airlines, because children are a group of age that is easily bored and tend to be more active when they are feeling bored, so the airline give these toys free of charge to prevent most children from fooling around the cabin and disturbing the other passengers on board.

Different airline may have different toys to be given away to its infant/child passenger. Last time when I was 6, I was given a toy airplane while flying Singapore Airlines (SIA). Hope this helps thanks.

Suppose your infants pediatrician recommends that your newborn receives lots of senory stimulation.?

Amanda

Which of the following techs might you use? play classical music, rub the infants back, turn off and on the lights, show the infant complex pictures.

Answer
You can use anything that is colorful or plays music. Infants are attracted to bright and colorful objects...best bet get a musical globe or one of the moving picture toys for the playpen or crib. Stimulation galore! Like one w/ bright fish swimming....

sensory stimulation and childcare?

portuguese

How much sensory stimulation do you think caregivers should provide for infants? Could an infant be given too much sensory stimulation?

Answer
How much is too much?

Age, development, and individuality, all play a role in identifying the optimal stimulation threshold in a particular child. As a general guideline, stimulation activities should be limited to three sessions per day and not to exceed fifteen minutes per session. Your child will tell you when âtoo muchâ is âtoo muchâ. Does he become irritable after ten minutes? Does he push away the toys? Learn to read his cues and remember that sensory-stimulation activities are to be short in duration and individualized.

What are some learning toys for a 7 week old infant?

You, you are the learning toy.

Continue nursing, playing, talking, and interacting with your baby, no toy can even come close to that.

Any infant toy recommendations?

alexis7310

I have a 6 month old daughter and I just recently began sitting for a 5 1/2 month old girl also.
I have all the big stuff (swing, jumparoo', entertainer, etc...) and lots of rattles, balls, stuffed animals...but am looking for other toys that might keep their interest longer and help them learn as well.

Any recommendations/links would be helpful!

Answer
I have an in-home daycare...currently I have 4 infants that range from 4 months to 11 months, here are the favorites:

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=31376&pcat=bubrilliant
The 6 months olds can close them easily, around 10 months they learn to open them also.

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30446&pcat=bulnl
This is an expensive one but well worth the investment in my opinion...it keeps ages 6 months all the way to 4 years old occupied

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30446&pcat=bulnl
Another big one, but it's great for kids around 6-10 months learning how to put things into other things, plus the balls themselves are entertainment :)

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=33177&pcat=bugym
Great for crawlers, fun to chase :)

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30444&pcat=bulnl
Pretty much any type of activity table is a must once they hit around 6-7 months, they are great for learning to stand and play

Well I could go on and on...I have a zillion toys and the kids love most of them...if you'd like more ideas let me know, I'd be happy to help!

What can I expect as my great dane's lymphoma progresses?

Q. He was diagnosed Oct 15, 2010, is on prednisone. He has golf ball size nodes under neck, as well as bilateral shoulders and behind knees. Was given between two weeks and three months. We are past the two week mark, and so far he seems to feel fine. What do i need to expect?

Answer
Firstly, I'm sorry you and he are enduring this. Seize every minute you have with him. Feed beef, chicken and FreshPet and other delicious options low in carbohydrate. Add fish oil capsules to his diet, at least 1,400 mg of omega 3 fatty acids total (read the labels). Go to the park. Take lots of pictures! I enjoyed keeping a journal of memories of my old babies in the past.

Lymphoma is responsive roughly in half the cases to chemotherapy, and I've seen many dogs withstand it with very few side effects. It is not responsive to radiation therapy. This is dependent on the degree of metastasis or spread. If it's affected any of his organs, he's of geriatric age, or he's in poor health, chemo may not be an option.

They have many good days and then some really bad days. On good days, they are playful, seek attention, eat well, enjoy interaction, can go on walks. On really bad days, they don't want to eat, they're lethargic, they need help to get outside and potty, and don't want to do anything. The bad days are hard, but until they have simultaneous bad days with no good days in between, we continue to support them and share life with them.

It's definitely an emotional roller coaster, as they don't clearly decline or improve in one direction. But dogs are tough, resilient, loving creatures, and they hold on until they're ready. They let us know by no longer enjoying their favorite things in life anymore. The difficult part for you will definitely be transporting him on days he's weak.

If he still enjoys toys, it's definitely invigorating for them to get a new toy every couple weeks. A pointer mix patient really loved her new big snake, or octopus, or hedgehog, whenever she came in for treatment. Definitely boosted her, she'd rouse enough to tug and pull it for many minutes.

Sometimes, lymphadenopathy, or swollen lymph nodes, decreases, and your dog survives another 3 months or a year. With a giant breed, it may be closer to 3 months.

Enjoy the time you have with him.

How soon after your baby began to pull up did he learn to walk?

and so it

My baby has begun to pull up on the furniture but he doesn't seem to be interested in walking or cruising (holding on to furniture). but he doesn't know how to use it.
Moms, tell me your experience with walking. Anything I can do to encourage him to walk?

Answer
for my now 3 year old son he was around 6-7 months when he started scooting around, about 7-8 months before he started crawling,8-10 months before he started pulling himself up 11-12 months before he started cruising around, and then he didn't start to turning lose and trying to walk until he was over 12 months. so he was sort of slow at all of it, of course i didn't think so until my baby who is now only 9 months came along and started learning it all. he started scooting around at around 4-5 months, has been crawling since he was 5 months, started pulling himself up around 6-7 months, and has been cruising around the furniture ever since he turned 8 months. he was 9 months old on the 7th of Feb. and in i'd say the past week we have seen him actually turn lose of the furniture and just stand freely on his own for quite a while before realizing what he was doing and grabbing a hold of something again.. the reason i went back all the way to the crawling even though you just asked about the pulling up and walking is to explain that it was just the difference in kids, i do the same exact things with my 9 month old that i did with my now 3 year old, they just developed and learned to do these things differently, in their own time. the push toys are great to help them, my 3 year old had them and loved them, my 9 month old has the same ones and never touches them, he just seems to like doing it on his own. so, we sit in the floor and just try to help him, my husband will sit a little bit away from me holdling his little hands as he is standing, and i try to coax him over to me by holding out a toy or something that he loves, and it seems to be working, because he is actually letting go and just standing there for a while on his own then when he tries to step he realizes daddy isn't holding to his hands anymore and he either grabs for him or sits down. i think he will soon get brave enough to try to come to me. this is what i would recommend trying. but, again like i said, each kid is different, and he will get it in his time. just be patient and work with him.

Q. I know to put down bottles and clothes binkies and stuff like that but ?? I am a stumped on what else to get our baby boy ??? Like any toys or anything ????What toys will a baby 0-12 months really play with ???A swing any one got any swings they really like and want ot suggest ??? How about car seats ??? .We already have clothes and stuff we are just looking for the big stuff that my husband will have to put together .Any thing I am missing ??
Any one have astroller they awant to suggest that would be wonderful!!

Answer
A swing - get one that has different speeds, and possibly music. The classical music on my son's swing always put him to sleep

Bouncy Seat - some babies love them, some hate them

Play Mat

In the toy section just look for toys that are 0-6 months

Rattles - I like the soft fabric ones so they can't hurt themselves

Car seat - do you want an infant carrier or a convertible? Do research on these before registering for them. Check out the Consumer Reports page so you can find safety ratings.

If you want an infant carrier I suggest getting a travel system, comes with the infant carrier, base and stroller.

Do you have a bassinett, crib, changing table, pack and play?

How to patch a hole on an inflatable bath tub for infants?

What should I bring when traveling/flying with an 8 month old baby?

Jen

We are flying to Ohio for a week (2 flights about 2 hours each). I am packing, but want to make sure I don't forget anything. I have diapers, wipes, clothes, a few toys, etc. How many bottles should I bring? I nurse and pump everyday, but will probably mostly pump while we are there. Any other suggestions would be great!
We are only bringing two small carry on suitcases and the diaper bag because luggage costs so much.

Answer
I just traveled with my son who was 10 months at the time...God bless you! haha....Anyway, Things I took on the plane with me 2 hour flight plus time in the airport....Diapers, wipes, change of clothes, bib, 2 bottles, 1 can of formula, infant tylenol/motrin, orajel (hes teething pretty bad lately), Food (3 jars), spoons, snacks (cereal), sippy cup, toys (ones that don't make too much noise).

Things I brought in general for the trip....Clothes, PJs, stroller, car seat, toys, baby toiletries (soap, lotion, nail clippers, nasal aspirator, brush, diaper rash cream, baby monitors (we were staying with family, so I was able to put him down for a nap, and still go outside by the pool). Towel and washclothes, sunblock.

I bought food, formula, and diapers when I got there. My relatives also borrowed a lot of baby gear from a friend so I had things there (Pack n Play, walker, high chair).

Check your airlines policies. There usually isn't a charge for checking carseat, strollers, or bassinets (pack n play), even if the child is flying on your lap. You are also allowed to bring the diaper bag plus your carry ons...the diaper bag does not count as your carry on.

Best of luck. I hope you are not traveling alone, and will have help, my son was very good and slept the entire flight there, and if it weren't for my fiance and my mother traveling with us, I would have had a nervous break down.

Is it bad not to buy toys for your infant?

Corrina

She is @ daycare every weekday from 9-5, but I have no toys for her @ home. I don't see the point. On Saturdays, I hold her and sing & dance while handwashing laundry, and other cleaning, and cooking, then in our other spare time we just go 2 the beach. My mom always makes me feel so guilty, she bought her a ton of stuff and she never played w/ it so I took it to GoodWill

Answer
I dont think it is bad not to have toys for your daughter but I think that you should have some things for her to play with around the house. Wheter it be some activites such as crayons and coloring books or some sort of game for the entire family. Too many toys can spoil a child but not enough toys can delay development. Toys can be very educational for children or all ages...depending on the toy. Although she get her play time at daycare it is important for her to learn the quality of playing alone at home...at daycare she is with many children for her to interact with. At home she will need time with her parents...sounds like you've got that part down...but she also needs to learn to play on her own to gain some independence and feelings of responsibility and control.

How do I make a long drive with my toddler manageable?

Ruby Tuesd

My family goes on vacation in 19 days and I'm concerned about the long drive with my 20 month old. It will be my husband, myself and the baby. My husband will be driving. We are driving form the Philadelphia area to North Carolina which takes about 7 1/2 hours. I'm really stressing about this now that it's not far away. We've taken trips to the Jersey shore which is only about 1 1/2 hours away and she was flipping. Any suggestions on how to make it work? Also, I'm having problems figuring out what to pack for a week long beach vacation with a toddler. On our last vacation she was an infant so packing was much different. Any suggestions on packing as well? Thanks in advance

Answer
Two words: DVD Player
Think of the things she uses at home, and pack those, and then pack extras for emergencies (extra changes of clothes, extra wipes, extra sippy cups in case you open the car door and hers falls out, not like you can run to the sink to wash it). Favorite lovey (doll, stuffed animal) lots of clean finger food snacks, and I pack a beach bag to keep in the backseat with books, toys, etc, and a carrying case with her favorite movies for the DVD player. Don't make a marathon drive, stop at every rest area as needed to walk and stretch your legs. Stop for lunch and get out of the car, even if you packed something to eat. I sat in back with her part of the time so she didn't feel lonely. This worked for me! Good luck.

Does anybody have any tips for babysitting for an infant?

I've got a part time job for when I go to Canada babysitting a 4 month old boy. I've had babysitting experience before but for no kids under the age of 18 months. Obviously, this is quite different because he's a lot younger and I can't just leave him to play with his toys like I can do with older kids. Has anyone had any similar experiences? Can you give me some tips?

Answer
You are certainly right- you can't leave a 4 month old alone! Never leave babies unattended. They'll fall over when you think they won't/can't, etc.! You can talk to them, play with age-appropriate toys with them, sing/lullabys, bath time is enjoyable for them, even reading to them at that young age is recommeneded and my daughter seemed to enjoy it! You can go for walks in the stroller if the weather is nice enough, or just bundle baby up well if it's a bit cold. Also babies like activity centers, jumpers, exersaucers at this age. Baby will be rolling around that age and soon enough, starting to sit up and crawl which is a fun, fun time.

How to patch a hole on an inflatable bath tub for infants?

Lux Lucis

We have this inflatable bath tub that has holes in it. The material is similar to that of an inflatable pool toy (Not the transparent kind). The holes are pretty small, looks more like a dog chewed on it than it does a rip.

Answer
Try a bicycle inner tube repair kit.

What should I get a baby for Christmas?

My daughter Hazel is 7 months old and this is her first Christmas! She's going to have a little brother and sister (twins) soon, and I want this Christmas to be really special. She's really sweet; she loves shouting and she loves banana puree. What should I get her?

Answer
My daughter is going to be 6 months old on Christmas day. She has everything she needs and already more toys than she can use from all the presents we received from friends and family. And she probably won't remember this christmas. So we decided to get her something for later. We got her a silver locket engraved with her name and the date 25-12-2012 and we'll put family pictures inside.

There is alot of speculation about the world ending in 2012, what are your opinions?

Stellie.

As i think that it could happen but i truly doubt it will.

Answer
People that say ANYTHING is going to happen out of the ordinary are delusional and need to seek psychiatric help.

There will be no pole-flips, no invisible pink planets, no exploding Mayan calendars, no alignments causing (unnamed) catastrophes... and if you don't believe me... go ask the people that made this #$% up. They are LOONS.

For example....

Nancy Lieder has more frequent flier miles than Barrack Obama, except SHE travels in a Flying Saucer. Yes, she came up with Planet X.

Jose Arguelles claims to be a reincarnated Mayan priest. Yeah, yeah, I know... Shirley MacLaine is an American Treasure, but that doesn't mean she isn't a LOON. Arguelles came up with the Exploding Mayan Calendar.

Terrence McKenna did more drugs than Timothy Leary. Okay, so NO ONE did more drugs than Timothy Leary, but it was close. McKenna, on one of his trips on Magic Mushrooms, came up with the "Chinese Connection" between the "I Ching" and his "Novelty Theory", calling it "Time Wave Zero" and spreading the lies to include China, which is very unfair. Sure, they poison our dogfood and add lead to baby toys, but they are innocent of the 2012 malarkey.

"Doctor" Jaysen Rand also likes to vacation in far off lands. Far FAR off lands, only reachable by Flying Saucer. He got his "Doctorate" by attending a conference of UFOologists. Why do they insist on calling them "UFOs"? The "U" stands for "unidentified" and according to "Doctor" Rand they are all from the Planet Omicron or something, so they are IDENTIFIED! Woo! Real alien life! Any proof? Well, no. He is just one more LOON.

Scratch below the surface of a 2012er and you get a nutcase. Every time.

Where can i get the toys needed for my sugar glider?

rumona

I live in St. Louis, and I'm going to be getting a sugar glider soon. I looked on ebay and found a nice cage and bonding pouches and all that kind of stuff, but I wanna know what types of toys I should get for my baby, and where to get them? I don't really want to buy those things online.

Answer
Just as a note before I start answering your actual question, sugar gliders are colony creatures and should be kept in pairs or groups.

That said, make sure your cage is at least 3 feet high x 3 feet wide x 2 feet deep.

Toys.. I know you say you don't want to buy online, but the truth is, you're more likely to find good toys online.
These are some vendors that I do business with on a regular basis:
Gliderdaydreams.com
SpoiledRottenSuggies.com
Gliderpals.com

..each are fabulous.
Also check out Critterbin.com
And glidercentral.net (great site for information, but also has a classifieds center, and many links to vendors).

If you still are set on buying them in person, most bird toys are safe. As well as toys made for infants.

You will also need cage sets and sleeping pouches for your gliders. Gliderdaydreams.com sells them -- and if you send her an e-mail (email is listed on her website) asking if she'll make a custom cage set for you, she likely will..(Standard cage set includes 2 corner hammocks, 1 bridge, 2 pouches... and if you want, a tunnel and/or fleece vine... This all for me, minus the fleece vine, cost $30 something).
