Every baby boy on the planet is born with a foreskin and yet very few have them removed. The foreskin is a perfectly normal natural body part.

It is illegal to circumcise baby girls. Would you be asking this question if your baby is a girl? The answer is probably no. So, the answer to would "I amputate normal healthy body parts of my baby boy,at the risk of death, perform cosmetic elective surgery on my perfect newborn?" The answer is no.

Doctors tell you the amputated Lie when it comes to Circumcision. I beg you to learn the WHOLE TRUTH.

Every YEAR, more than 100 babies die from Circumcision. If this was a product, a toy, a crib, stroller, bottle for sale, on the market, for babies, it would have been recalled long ago.

Do you know what a dreamcatcher is? It's a infant's cradle decoration, like a crib mobile. nothing more. It has no magic powers or special meanings. It is laughable how white people have become obsessed with dream catchers, and adults all want to own them.

My children had them when they were breast feeding. I'm sure they could be caused by teething, but are most likely the result of sucking on fingers or toys to sooth the teething. This is a portion of the definition found in Parenting Magazine. Hope this helps.

Ok, i'm not a mom, but i am a parent, so....

My son has a SpiderMan backpack that has been used as a diaper bag for a couple of years.

While he was an infant, the diaper bag had: complete spare outfit, 6-8 diapers, package of wipes, a couple of small garbage bags, rash cream, teething toy, however many bottles/sippy cups were needed, and all of his baby documents (birth cert, vaccination record).

As he grew older, the rash cream was replaced with sunscreen, and the teething toy was replaced by old magazines, and a small zip top bag of Cheerios.

Now that he's potty training, we carry three pairs of underwear, two pairs of shorts, and one neutral shirt for back up outfit duty. No diapers, but wipes are always good to have on hand for accidents in and out of the pants--messy eating, small spills, sticky hands, etc. Still have those grabage bags as well, for wet/soiled clothes. A fresh bag of Cheerios--some things don't change so fast. Sunscreen and a bottle of water for emergencies (can you tell i was a Boy Scout?) Still carry a copy of his birth cert and shot records. A couple of toy cars. A rock he picked up at the park. My wife's old cell phone (it's his "phone" now). And a pair of shades--one of three pairs he owns.

Really, what I would suggest, thinking about Montessori, is your actual environment. Not so much specific activities, but I would look and see whether the environment is set up for the child. When your daughter is old enough to crawl, is everywhere she crawls safe for her?

Right now, language is playing a huge role in development. Not that she'll start talking, but it is important to make sure you talk to her a lot, sing and play games, and she sees positive communication from you.

What is the best car seat toy for a forward facing carseat?

I am going to be getting my son a new car seat because he no longer fits in his old one. The new one is forward facing. In the old car seat, we have a bar that has rattles and a light up musical frog that my son loves to play with. Anyone have any ideas for an awesome car seat toy? When deciding on any toy to be allowed in the car, think about what's going to happen in an accident and it goes flying. This will sound silly, but its a simple test to decide whether it should be allowed as a toy in the car: smack yourself upside the head with it. did it hurt? If not, go for it, if it hurt you, think about how much more it will hurt a baby, whose skull is softer, and when in an accident it will hit with a lot more force. Ican't at all remember who made them, but check your local kids resale shop (like Once Upon a Child) since they seem to have them often: soft toy steering wheels so child can play-drive while in the car.

However, a bigger issue here, would be how old is your child and what size? Sounds like he's outgrowing an infant carrier car seat? Kids do not go from infant carrier seat straight to forward facing seat. The next step is a rear facing convertible car seat. Most state laws require kids to be rear facing until at least 20lbs and 1 year, but more importantly, the laws of physics say kids should stay rear facing as long as they possibly can. Its THAT much safer. The old 20lbs/1 year rule is just that. OLD. It came about in the 1980's when our seats were only capable of rear facing to 20lbs and we didn't know any better. Now we definitely know better and all current convertible seats rear face to at least 30lbs, but its hard getting people to realize this.
Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child's life!
1)A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age.
2)A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
3)Current research suggests that children under the age of two years are 75 percent less likely to die or be seriously injured when they are riding rear facing.
4)In a recent article from Injury Prevention, it was found that the odds of severe injury to forward facing children age 12-23 months old was 5.32 times higher than a rear facing child. (Car Safety Seats For Children: Rear Facing For Best Protection; Injury Prevention 2007; 13:398-402.)

It works this way: when you get in an accident and run into something, the car stop suddently, but everything and everyone in the car keeps moving in the direction the car was moving when it stopped, in most accidents, this is forward. So in an accident with a child in a forward facing seat, his head, the heaviest part of the body on babies and toddlers, flies forward very forcefully and easily snaps. If that same child is in a rear facing seat, his head tries to fly forward but is supported by the back of the rear facing seat, so there is no stress put on the child's neck and spine.

There are, however, lots of cases where children have been killed and seriously injured where a rear facing seat would have protected them better. And most kids actually prefer to be rear facing b/c they can rest their feet on the vehicle seat back. When they are forward facing, their legs don't receive enough support and will frequently fall asleep.

Any tips on air traveling with an infant?

My 7 month old is preparing to fly to his uncles wedding in Key west. So we'll be on a puddle jumper too. I'd love to know any tricks on getting an extra seat or any savvy advice. I've heard about benedryl and would prefer not to use it. Any other must knows

Pack a very light carry on! A few diapers, wipes, bottle (if s/he uses one), change of shirt for you (I needed one), and a few simple toys. Take a soft colorful book, a favorite small stuffed toy and a rattle (the other passengers will get over it). I flew with my daughter when she was four months. I made the mistake of taking too much with me in the carry on, it's hard to juggle a carry on and a baby. I needed a new shirt when the diaper leaked all over me, I was lucky I had bought one at the airport I left from. Use a front carrier instead of getting another seat. If you're on a long flight you can get him/her out of it and let 'em wiggle. Short flights just leave 'em in it, it will save time and hassle. Be sure to be on time, you can be boarded after the handicapped. Makes it easier to get situated in your seat before the other passengers crowd and push through. No matter how nice the stranger next to you seems, they probably wont want to talk to you because you brought the baby on a plane. If your baby has a pacifier, BRING it! It will help while taking off and landing to equalize baby's little ears. Good luck and enjoy the wedding!

Is it safe to travel with an infant?

If she is a normal, healthy baby, you will have no problems. Just be sure to bring plenty of nappies and formula, toys, and clothes (for you and her) in your carry on.

Here are the things to worry about... First is hydration! The air in the cabin comes in from a source on the engine (called "bleed air"). Being from the ambient air outside, it is remarkably dry. It is at most single digits, if that much at all. The problem here is breathing. We lose water normally from sweat, urination, etc; but in an airplane we also loose a lot from just breathing. The moisture comes when we exhale.

You should prepare formula or have EBM for her, and have some extra juice and/or water. You will likely have to purchase the water or juice inside the terminal as they do not allow sufficient quantity of liquid through security screening. Also, I do not trust the "tap" water on airplanes, only bottled water...

A bottle or sippy cup, pacifier, teething ring, etc to suck on is also a must. During ascent and descent, the cabin pressure will change and as a result, she may get an ear block. These can be painful, but are relieved by negative pressure in the mouth and throat. If it is really bad, you can try to yawn with her looking, the yawn reflex is strong and it often results in equalizing the pressure. You can also try gently massaging her forehead, neck, and around her ears if it doesn't clear.

She is 8 months old, and can therefore fly as a "lap baby", but I would caution against that. If you carry her all the way, it will be uncomfortable for you and annoying for her. It is also dangerous if the airplane needs to break hard or hits turbulence in flight. Consider getting a seat for her and bringing her car seat (but check to be sure the seat is approved for airplanes. This will be written on the side).

I hope this helps! I'm a flight paramedic and have transported many children. I am also a frequent traveler, including many international destinations. I speak from both a professional medical provider and a frequent flyer. I've seen dozens upon dozens of parents travel with small children, and with a few simple steps, it can be easy and enjoyable for all.

oh! small bottles (like small soda, plastic bottles).. have your boys go fill them with rocks and then seal them up.. then take all the plastic wrap off of them and have them decorate them with non toxic paint. makes a really pretty rattle!!

they could make her a little mobil for her crib out of paper cut outs.

you can get a big piece of cloth and get some of that paint made to use on cloth and they could make her a blanket that she can always keep.

maybe they could go build her an animal at build-a-bear. (but i think you can get a set at walmart [usually for girls to play with but in this case, i think its ok] and they can make a bear at home for her).

How can I get my baby to stop sucking her thumb?

My baby is 3 months old and she always wants to suck her thumb. I've given her a pacifier and she spits it out to suck her thumb!! I know it's not a huge deal right now, but I dont want her to be doing this when she is 2-3 years old. Has anyone else had this problem?

If she wants to suck her thumb at that age, there isn't anything you can do to stop her. it's fine for children to suck their thumbs as long as it's not past age 4 (for dental reasons). You have to break the attachment to a pacifier as well, so there really is no advantage to trying to make her take one. At least with thumb sucking, you don't have get up in the middle of the night to replace it for her, she can do it herself. You can try to encourage her to get attached to a toy as she gets a little older and around age 3 or so, you can try a thumb guard to teach her not to suck anymore.

Making your own baby food is a good one. That way your baby gets all the nutrition you get in mashed form. I use a KidCo food mill. You put the food in, crank the handle and baby eats what you eat for meals. It was a $13 investment that saved tons in baby food and you get to know exactly what baby gets.

Also instead of cloth diapers you could look into g-diapers. They have a website and are also sold at places like Whole Foods. They are a cross between a cloth and a disposable however instead of throwing away the diaper you flush a biodegradable insert down the toilet and wash out the outer shell. They have no pins and use velcro on the back so baby can't take off his or her own diaper.

And instead of wipes you could buy a box-o-rags that you re-use by cleaning with bleach or a natural cleaning agent (Shaklee makes a great one). You cut them into smaller pieces and dampen them when you have poopy diapers. They are usually recycled from old t-shirts so they aren't a rough fabric and very cost effective.

Getting fabrics that are made of soy, bamboo, or other natural replenishing fibers are not only safer but usually softer and last longer.

If you don't already have wood floors in your nursery, look for a demolition in your area of maybe a school, church or the like and ask about getting your wood from them. School gyms and churches usually have old wood floors full of charm and character and most often this stuff goes to the dump.

Buying wood toys (such as Melissa and Doug items) ensures your baby has child-safe yet fun, educational toys that aren't full of plastic and batteries.

One last thing I can think of. When storing baby food or breastmilk, buy cases of Mason jars. This eliminates the use of plastic ice cube trays (for freezing food), tupperware, and Saran wrap. The jars come in all sorts of sizes and are less expensive that Glad-ware in the long run.

She'll walk when she is ready, but in the mean time, you can get those little push toys where she can hold on to and walk with them as she is pushing, massage legs, feet circulate the blood get it flowing... You can have her hold on to your fingers to practice walking... the options are endless... I say be as active as possible but also enjoy this time where you are not having to chase after her, and let her be an infant/toddler as Long as possible... enjoy it, raising a child is beautiful, don't rush it observe and enjoy it.

What age did you move your kiddo from the baby bath to the real bath?

My 16-month old still uses the infant-toddler bath, and I like it because it contains him a little better, it's cleaner, and doesn't use as much water. He seems like he's getting a little cramped though, so I'm just wondering at what age others transfer to the big tub for baths.

This is a preference thing much more than anything else. As soon as you or he is ready, go for it! And at 16 months he can sit up, and should be walking so no fear of him sliding into the water readily. If he and you are ready switch, and if you're worried that he may not like it, let him splash more with the bubbles, maybe try a new boat toy. Something new that he can associate with switching to the bigger bath, to make it more fun and an easier switch.
Myself, I never used a baby bath, just the bath tub itself, I started out climbing in with my daughter and holding her while i bathed her and let her kick and splash and it became easier when she could sit up and play more. Then at a year we introduced the shower-head for more fun! And it's worked great, my daughter takes both baths and showers since the age of 3, now at 5 she cleans better than my husband some days :)
{Try the tub-stickers, the ones you put on the bottom of the shower to give more grib when you stand. They even come in cute fishy designs, so slipping is less of a worry as well. They should give you more confidence in letting him sit up and play in the big tub.}

Moms what do you do to make your plane ride with your toddler easier?

In about a week me and my 13 month old are flying back to my home town for the weekend. Any thoughts on how to make the plane ride easier for me and her both. Also .. do you think I should take a car seat or just hold her. My sister back home has a car seat we can use when we get there, but I don't know if it will be easier for her to just sit in her own car seat or in my lap. Any suggestions?

Most airlines allow children under 2 to ride in their parent's lap. So if money is an issue for you, upon checking in (or purchasing your tickets), note that you will be carrying an infant in your lap so you don't have to pay extra for another seat. Make sure you get an aisle seat so there is no struggle when you have to get up to use the rest room and there is room for your wiggler to wiggle. Our two hour trip from Orlando to Newark (and back) was a little tough the first time. So what did to make sure that this flight would be easier was use a large diaper bag as my carry-on and fill it with stuff to entertain him (amongst his diapers and other motherly necessities). I bought a coloring book, his favorite small toys and favorite books to read, some snacks and a portable dvd player w/ his favorite tv shows or movies. Make sure to pack a juice or water (3ozs or less... lol), so that they can be drinking and swallowing when the plane takes off, which helps the popping in their ears be less painful. You can also just purchase a juice or water on the flight, but sometimes they are a little pricey. If you are getting one, buy a juice or water so you can share.
I also scheduled the flight around the time I knew he'd be taking his nap so he could sleep some of the time. I had done the whole flight thing with him once w/o this stuff and w/o getting aisle seats. It was horrendous and I learned from that tremendously. After the flight with the baggage filled with goodies, I was actually comments from those seated beside me. He was so well behaved and they had initially been worried about their flight with a baby next to them. I actually had one of them tell me that I was a good mother, which is always good to hear! I hope this helps!

What should I bring when traveling/flying with an 8 month old baby?

We are flying to Ohio for a week (2 flights about 2 hours each). I am packing, but want to make sure I don't forget anything. I have diapers, wipes, clothes, a few toys, etc. How many bottles should I bring? I nurse and pump everyday, but will probably mostly pump while we are there. Any other suggestions would be great!
We are only bringing two small carry on suitcases and the diaper bag because luggage costs so much.

I just traveled with my son who was 10 months at the time...God bless you! haha....Anyway, Things I took on the plane with me 2 hour flight plus time in the airport....Diapers, wipes, change of clothes, bib, 2 bottles, 1 can of formula, infant tylenol/motrin, orajel (hes teething pretty bad lately), Food (3 jars), spoons, snacks (cereal), sippy cup, toys (ones that don't make too much noise).

Things I brought in general for the trip....Clothes, PJs, stroller, car seat, toys, baby toiletries (soap, lotion, nail clippers, nasal aspirator, brush, diaper rash cream, baby monitors (we were staying with family, so I was able to put him down for a nap, and still go outside by the pool). Towel and washclothes, sunblock.

I bought food, formula, and diapers when I got there. My relatives also borrowed a lot of baby gear from a friend so I had things there (Pack n Play, walker, high chair).

Check your airlines policies. There usually isn't a charge for checking carseat, strollers, or bassinets (pack n play), even if the child is flying on your lap. You are also allowed to bring the diaper bag plus your carry ons...the diaper bag does not count as your carry on.

Best of luck. I hope you are not traveling alone, and will have help, my son was very good and slept the entire flight there, and if it weren't for my fiance and my mother traveling with us, I would have had a nervous break down.

Yup, thus why we only buy wooden toys and we make sure all of our plastic is BPA free, or buy glass/wood products where possible. We use glass baby bottles.

I bought so many toys that say birth plus. My son will be 7 weeks on Wednesday and he has shown ZERO interest in these birth plus toys, I put them up to him and shake the toys and push the lights on them and he just stares at the ceiling or at the lamps, never at the toys. When did your infant finally enjoy his toys?
I dont mind that he would rather look at ceilings and not his toys I just thought he needed all these toys since it says Birth on them and the packs they came in say that these toys have all these developmental benefits.

She had a Baby Einstein mat with a star suspended from the top which blinked multiple colors and played various classical songs and she loved that at one month. She would pay attention to it and even kick her legs in rhythm with some of the music. However, she did find the ceiling fan more interesting. The rest of her toys weren't interesting until she learned to work her hands on her own. And, to tell you the truth, most of the time, babies will find real world objects (like Mom's cellphone or keys) more interesting than the toys designed for them. My daughter's thing has been cat toys. We have little balls with bells in them for the cats, and a mouse the squeaks when you shake it. She would always find those more interesting than comparable infant/toddler toys for some reason. If I had known that in the beginning, I would have invested in cheap kitty toys. As it is, we go real simple with toys (mostly received as gifts). She is obsessed with books and balls and largely ignores toys except enjoying dumping them all over the floor, picking them up and putting them back...rinse and repeat.

How do you keep your infant from crying while shopping?

I have an 11 month old infant who has a difficult time keeping entertained while I shop. The only way I can doing any shopping is if I know exactly what I want, purchase it, and then leave immediately. Whenever I need some time to browse, my 11 month old begins to fuss and eventually begins to cry. I've always fed and changed her before our outings so those reasons go out the window. Is there anyway that I can keep my daughter entertained better while I'm doing errands? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I totally feel your pain..... First remember this don't worry about those childless people (or even parents themselves) who'll give you dirty looks if you baby so much as cries while you are trying to shop.. They'll get over it and ig they donn't eventually they'll go somewhere else. Some people seem to think they were perfect angels when they were young (yeah right!)
Babies are going to cry... even if there is nothing wrong.
Babies cry to relieve stress too. Not just when they are hungry or need to be changed or tired.

Alot of time shopping in the morning not too long after the baby has gotten up and been fed. Not too close to nap time though : )

Sometime I bring cheerios and juice. Or I let them bring a toy... Once they get sick of that I give them my keys...
Also I saw another person mention letting them hold things that you put in your basket.... I do that too!

Have you tried those soft books? some of them have teething toys on them and some have different textures... like crinklly paper in them or something squeaky in them

If a pacifier works for you then go for it! I refused to give my kids a pacifier after 6 months old... it can hinder speech development. I see some mom's with 2 and 3 year olds that still have "binkies" and they think it's cute that the kid can talk even with the paci in their mouth.... Little do they know it's training the kid to talk like that... all garbled and such
But if it's the only thing that will work then it's up to you.

The only other thing I can think of is what I did when my daughter (I have 2 kids) was getting into the "difficult" stage
I just refused to take her with me..... If I ran out of milk.. too bad
We'd just have to wait for daddy to get home.. or I would just call him and have him get some on the way home.
Then when I had real grocery shopping to do... not just milk and eggs, I would have my husband take care of her while I shopped.

oh, I just remembered... do you have any musical toys? (what kinda question is that?) Or ones that have lights and stuff?
That always seemed to work for my 19 month old son.
He would be crying and just suddenly stop when he heard his toy. He would completely forget about WHY he was crying : )

Are there any daycare owners on here?

I'm planning to open a daycare in August 2010. I'm thinking about buying a house in a commercial area. I want to start by having no more than 25 children from the ages of 6 wks-18 months. I think it would be cheaper since I wouldn't have to worry about so many toilets per child, food, playground equipment, field trips, etc. I would like to expand maybe after three years to include older children. Do anyone think this is a good way to start?

I definitely think your plan can work. Make sure you are doing as much research and gathering as much information as you can right now.

Infant care is in high demand and many places only do preschool aged children and up. I don't know that it will be cheaper because infants usually require a higher ratio (one adult for every 4 infants is typical) while older children can be watched by fewer adults. However, you will be able to charge a lot more to watch infants than you could for older children.

Start saving your money now. The more money you have saved (and don't have to take out in loans) the better. If you are planning on opening a daycare in a low income area, you may also be able to get a grant. You need to research and apply for grants early. Start collecting baby equipment, toys, and books now. You won't want to buy everything new, but slowly collect it through garage sales, donations, etc. You have to do everything you can to keep your initial costs down (you can always upgrade later). Buying a house is a good idea (as long as you get a good deal and can afford the payments initially even without the daycare income).

Contact the agency that licenses programs in your state and get some initial feedback and information about what you are wanting to do so you can start the approval process. You will need one year of hard work to be able to open your doors.

How can I help my husband realize that I don't hate his penis?

We are having a son soon and I don't want him circumcised. My husband does, but I think he's given up arguing with me because he knows I firmly believe routine infant circumcision is bad and I wouldn't stand for anyone to do that to our son. The problem is that my husband was circumcised as a baby and now he thinks I hate his penis because I don't want our son circumcised. I have used such words as "mutilation" and "abuse" to describe circumcision. He thinks that I think he is inadequate now and not good enough for me and less of a man. I love my husband (and his penis) and I hate that he thinks these things! What can I say/do to help him realize I don't hate his penis just because I want my son to have the opportunity to make his own decision regarding his foreskin??

Your situation is very common. It's called Adamant Father Syndrome. The best thing you could do is show him videos of it being done. I was almost in the same situation as you, but made him change his mind. I told him the truth about circumcision - they cut off 20,000 nerve endings and in comparison a clitoris has 8,000. The ridged band in the tip of the foreskin has 10-12,000 nerve endings, and in that sense is the male equivalent of a clitoris. In a circumcision it must be cut through before being removed. Back then they didn't know as much about circumcision as they do now. Back then parents had that excuse that they didn't know, but these days that's different. These days they've mapped the penis sensitivity, counted the nerve endings under a microscope, they've had infants monitored for heartrate, cortisol (stress hormone), blood oxygen saturation level and screaming with various painkillers and have come to the conclusion circumcision is indeed the most pain a human being can go through and the pain alone makes it very dangerous (on top of bleeding - hypovolemic shock is very common) for babies.

Back then circumcision was the majority. These days intact is the majority. Back then people thought circumcision is cleaner, these days they know intact is cleaner. And back then most parents had never seen a circumcision being done and they didn't know what it involves. Back then they used to think you had to retract an intact boy's foreskin, which brought about a lot of problems with infection and phimosis and balanitis. These days they know and teach parents (well if their knowledge is up to date) never, ever retract and only clean what you see.

Times have changed, and you don't look at your son sexually, you're thinking about him among his peers.

At the end of the day, he needs to start thinking like a father. Considering the different generational differences, and what is known about circumcision, he needs to understand that his responsibility is to your son, and to protect him, and keep up-to-date with knowledge about baby care. Like back then, they used to tell women almost how not to breastfeed successfully, hence many women failed and resorted to bottle-feeding. Does he intend to make you follow the same advise as his mother? Back then they weaned babies onto solids at 4 months old. Now they know better and have realized that before 6 months can really affect the body permanently (and many adults ARE suffering the affects). Does he intend on making you feed him at 4 months old? Back then they thought it kept babies happy to be surrounded by toys in the crib. Now they know that is often fatal. Does he intend on making sure your son is surrounded by teddy bears just like many people used to? The bottom line is that some things are different. Circumcision is one of them.

Put simply, you not putting your baby boy through the pain and trauma has NOTHING to do with your husband's penis. It's not about hang-ups or sexual preferences, it's about good PARENTING.

Just looking for different ideas you do to keep your infant entertained. Mine can't sit up by self yet. Best ideas gets 10 points.

My girls were always very happy if I just carried them around and talked to them about whatever I was doing. We went on walks, trips to the mall and grocery store, and just moved around the house cleaning and doing laundry. My younger daughter loved being carried in a sling, and I wish I'd had one when my older daughter was a baby. My older daughter did like the stroller a lot, though.

My older daughter loved her bouncy seat, and when she was 4 months old, I started putting her in her exersaucer, which was her very favorite toy. She also loved listening to books. I could hold her on my lap and read to her for a very long time.

My younger daughter loved the swing. She also loved just being on the floor in the middle of the room and watching everything around her -- her big sister, the cats, etc.

Both girls loved being outside -- just feeling the breeze on their faces, hearing the sounds, and watching the leaves rustle on the trees.

I sang to my daughters a lot, too -- lullabies, nursery rhymes, pop songs, made-up songs, whatever I was in the mood to sing and whatever they seemed interested in hearing.

I looked them in the eye and talked directly to them. I'd identify their body parts (eyes, nose, mouth, hands, tummy, feet, knees, toes) as I touched them. I'd use hand motions to sing songs, or I'd let them watch me count on my fingers.

I'd hold up various toys and see which ones interested them. If they wanted to hold or touch something, I gave them the toy or let them feel it.

Most of the things that keep an infant entertained are interactive. Your baby wants to see your face, snuggle up to you, and hear your voice. He or she will play with some toys, but most of that will come a little later -- after sitting.

Infants and Toddlers:
* tying colorful scarfs together and placing them into a clear plastic bottle (juice bottle). Then letting them pull out the scarves.
* dump and fill activities
* Peek a boo boards- where they have to pick up the foam flaps to see what it underneath.
* texture books-allowing them to turn the pages
* Float and Sink activity. Letting the child put the objects into and out of the water.
* Feely Boxes- decorate a box with different textured material. Place items inside that are of different textures. Let them reach in and take out the items.
* Sticking objects to (and taking objects off) contact paper that has been taped to a surface sticky side up.
* squeaky squeeze toys
* fingerplays
* squeeze sponges- having a little soap and colored water makes it great fun!
* sensory gloves- fill plastic gloves with various items (beans, oatmeal, etc) and let them squeeze them.
* Canister Shakers: Put paper clips, buttons, or other small objects inside potato chip cans or film canister. Tape or glue the lids on. When you make these with film canisters, even a very small baby can grasp and shake them.
* Slot Drop Can: Cut a 1 ½” slot in the lid of an empty coffee can. Replace the lid. Provide poker chips or very large buttons for children to push through the Slot Drop Can. Variation: Cut two slits in the lid of a coffee can. Make one slit about ¼” wide and another about 1” wide. Make several fat chips by gluing four poker chips together. Single chips will work in the thin slit.
* Tape Removal: Place several strips of masking tape on a tabletop, tray, or on the floor. Show the children how to pull up the strips. It's also great fun to have colored tape strips attached to the edge of the table and let them take it off and put them onto their paper. Older preschools enjoy this with masking tape and then color them with markers. We happened to have read The 3 Pigs that day so we put the tape on our chins like hair. "Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin" was heard over and over and over with peals of laughter LOL I brought out some mirrors and what a hey day they had!

*Stringing Tubes: Cover empty toilet paper tubes with contact paper. Cut the tubes into 2”-3” pieces. Show the children how to string the tubes onto a thick piece of yarn. Wrap one end of the yarn with masking tape to create a “needle”. Tie the other end of the yarn around one of the tubes to create a stopper.

Pompom Pick Up: Place 2” pompoms on a carpet square. Give the babies a buck and encourage them to pick up the pompoms and place them in the bucket or pail.

Coaster Bank: Cut a 4” x ½” slot in the top of a plastic lid of a 5 pound coffee can. Give the children plastic coasters to drop through the slot.

Soap it Up: Provide a tub of water and different size bars of soap. Invite the babies to enjoy the feel of the soap in their hands as they explore the bars of soap.

Drop the Beanbag: Provide a bucket and a bean bag. Show the children how to stand over the bucket, hold the beanbag at waist height and drop I into the bucket. When the children get good at hitting the bucket when holding the beanbag at that height, encourage them to try raising their bean bag to their chests and dropping it.

Shakers: Fill saltshakers with colored sand. Invite the infants to shake the sand onto a piece of butcher paper. Or provide construction paper with glue brushed over it for the children to use as a landing spot.

Jars and Lid: Give babies plastic jars and lids to play with. Take all the lids off and see if the children can match lids to their jars.

Ball Holders: Give infants tennis balls and a large muffin tine. Challenge them to place one ball in each cup.

Some for Preschoolers:

* Run a threaded needle through cloth; sew large buttons to canvas or material.
* Cut straight and curved lines/shapes drawn on paper, cloth, etc., with scissors
* Knead dough; Play dough play with young children with the terms: poke, squeeze, pound, press, knead, etc. is always good for language too.
* Stick small objects into play dough for him/her to pull out
* Wind thread on a spool evenly
* Tie a box with string or ribbon
* Styrofoam Sewing: The ability to print and write legibly depends on the child’s degree of fine motor control. This activity give shim the small-muscle practice he needs to gain a high degree of control. Provide clean styrofoam meat trays. With a pencil or marking pen, outline the simple shape of a familiar object on the tray. With a pencil point, punch holes in the tray along the outline. Thread the needle with a 36” length of yarn, doubling it and knotting the loose ends together. Sew along the outline , in the holes, or at random on the meat tray. Because stryofoam remains rigid and does not bunch up like fabric, it is an ideal first medium for sewing.
* Simple Stencils: Trace a large die-cut shape onto the front of a manila folder and then cut out t

Have a "Beach Day" or "Water Play Day"
This is assuming you have an adequate outdoor area, of course.

Set out a few wading pools, water sprinklers, slides, etc. The children will bring their bathing suits,towels and sunscreen and just enjoy a day outdoors in a less-structured environment. Have a sand table with lots of digging toys available; a small tub of sand with seashells; a bubble center, and so on. You can have a picnic-style lunch with popsicles.

Not a whole lot of work in terms of decorations, props, etc. but loads of fun for the kids.

It's for an opinion paper in my child development (psychology) class. There is no right or wrong answer...and everyone has different opinions. Let's try to respect others feelings in our responses. I'm hoping to find some responses that I had not thought of, or I had thought of but had trouble expressing the opinion in a clear way. The answer that best assists me in my preparation for the paper gets "Best Answer"!-- Whether you agree with me or not (part of the reason I'm not stating where I stand). Pros: your child will be able to learn and interact with other children and it prepares them for pre-school or kinder garden.

Cons: (If you work a 9-5 job) someone else will be raising your child and disciplining them, probably in ways you don't approve of. You are away from your child for a long period of times. Your child may pick up other bad kid's habits. If your child is still an infant...then your child might end up calling his/her caregiver "mommy". I've seen it happen before. Other kids may have bad hygiene and pass it on to your child (i.e. head lice).

UPSIDE of Daycare:

Always more than one person available to watch, care for, supervise, and feed your child

Interaction with other children

Develop social skills at an early age

Kid's days are pretty much scheduled, routine, and consistent

Daycare centers don't call in sick

Kids receive a lot of mental stimulation

Your house stays neater (although my son can make a mess in minutes)

My daughter is going to be two in May. I am wondering what would be some good educational toys for her. I have been looking but most of what I have been seeing is for infants and toys that she would get bored of. She likes things that make noise. Right now she is into drawing and organizing. She likes pushing things around. She is really into baby dolls right now. I got her one and some accessories to go with. I am just wondering what educational. I a curious what your child at this age likes or liked and also what are some toys to avoid? Thanks!

Any suggestions on traveling with infant on a plane?

I will be traveling ALONE with my 10 months old son for a 15 hours non-stop flight very soon. Any suggestions on how i can make it easier on myself and on him? I heard about the sucking bottle when take off and land to avoid his ear popping. The travel agent booked us the very last row. but then I heard that the best is the bulk head. I am not sure having a big screen in front of me and my baby though. He crawls everywhere. Not yet walking by himself. What do i do to entertain him? Can I bring a electronic toys on board? Is there any traveling gear that I should bring with me? I will have a travel system stroller and the car seat with me. I am afriaid it will be really tough when we get to the screening. Just a bit nervous since I will be going alone. That's a long flight too. Please help.

I would like to know how anyone here might have travelled alone by plane with a toddler (mine is almost 2) and a baby (mine is 10 months old). Please I am at a loss at how I will be able to visit my father with both babies. What gear is available, how can this be done? I will of course have help to get to and from the airports but in between with boarding, seating, and after arrival to get to baggage area. Thanks.

Okay well your one child (the older one) will have their own seat. but you will be holding the baby unless you purcahsed a separate seat. i highly suggest a double stroller and wheel the luggage behind you. You can use your stroller up until the very last second and then they will put it under the plane for you and then they will have it ready for you right when you get off...but that is going to SAVE you. Also make sure you have a backpack so that you can keep a change of clothe, diapers, etc and pack some new toys and snacks so that your toddler will be interested and if you have a potable dvd player i would pack that in the bag as well. Also if they have a favorite binky or blanket or cup i would definately let them have that. Relax and take your time.

what's the easiest way to fly with an infant and a toddler?

The toddler will have his own seat, but I will be holding the baby. My questions are, should the toddler fly in his carseat, and if should we be taking a stroller to the gate (I have a double jogger).
Anyone who has gone through this, please give advice! This is not a vacation, it is for a cross country move so both carseats will need to go on the plane in some way.

Definitely strap the toddler into his seat and buckle him in. Don't get him out for any reason. Treat it like a car trip. Take a stroller to the gate, but I'd recommend just using a single stroller because they're easier to fold and deal with and get a sling or Bjorn for your infant. It'll be easier for everyone involved! Make sure to have new toys in a backpack for him. Think: a new box of crayons, coloring book and paper, play doh, little plastic animals and cars. One thing my grandmother did for me in a similar situation was to wrap little junky toys like the ones mentioned above and at certain time intervals I was allowed to open a new one. It made the trip go faster (according to my parents) and I only got them if I was behaving myself. Good luck!

I'm going home to visit family and I won't have anyone else to help me. I've never taken him on a plane but I'm scared that he'll cry the whole way and I'll feel really bad for annoying others. Does breastfeeding work well for taking off/landing? I'm open to any suggestions!
I couldn't even afford my economy class ticket let alone business, my family paid for it so they can meet the baby. My husband has to stay home too.

For a trip that long, I would highly recommend paying the extra price and getting your baby his own seat in her carseat. That way you don't have to hold him the whole time. You CAN fly "infant in arms" and not pay for him to fly but would it be worth it? Just my two cents.....

Yes, breastfeeding or a pacifier helps with the differences of cabin pressure during take off and landing, just like chewing gum. Bring little toys and books to keep her from getting too bored. Bring a lot of healthy snack foods and pick her up and walk around occasionally. Try traveling mainly at night, may be your baby will sleep more.

Also, if your baby cries a lot, the seasoned travelers are used to it, and besides you won't see any one else on the plane again so don't feel bad. And a bad day or so of crying and the annoyance of the trip won't have any negative affect on a normally happy baby.

Will 3 Car seats fit in a 2012 Kia Sorento?

Hi! I just purchased a 2012 Kia Sorento and I just found out I am pregnant with baby number 3

Just wondering if anyone has experience with fitting 3 car seats in a Sorento.

I have a 3 1/2 year old son whos 31 lbs and a 2 year old girl whos 24 lbs.

If you have fit three Id love to know the brands of carseats if you know!!

If your car was older, I would tell you to go on www.car-seat.org and type in your vehicle name, year, and the words "3-across". Many times you will get search results on car seats.

I know that the Diono Radians are extremely narrow car seats. The R120 and RXT version both have a rear facing weight limit of 45 lbs, a forward facing weight limit of 80 lbs, and it can be used as a booster seat from 120 lbs, however, in most 3-in-1 models, there are always flaws with the booster seat. I wouldn't worry though because using this seat as a convertible seat is still awesome.

The Radians tend to take up a large room front to back when rear facing. Diono has created a new angle adjuster, a wedge that you place under the Diono Radians to change the angle. This can make an older rear facing child much more happy. Your 3 1/2 year old can rear face in this seat if he is short enough- this car seat is outgrown by height when the child's head is 1 1/2 inches away from the shell.

Also, you don't have to buy an infant seat for an infant. You can use a convertible car seat from birth. I would recommend the Diono Radians, Safety 1st TrueFit Convertibles, Evenflo Triumph 65, Evenflo Symphony e3, and the cheap Cosco Scenera 40 lbs weight limit (there are two scenera one with a 35 lb weight limit and the other with the 40 lb weight limit so read carefully)- costs $50 at your local target.

Before you ever buy a car seat make sure that you test it out in your vehicle first. Many times at Toys R Us, they will let you test out the seat with the display model.
