Where can i get the toys needed for my sugar glider?

Q. I live in St. Louis, and I'm going to be getting a sugar glider soon. I looked on ebay and found a nice cage and bonding pouches and all that kind of stuff, but I wanna know what types of toys I should get for my baby, and where to get them? I don't really want to buy those things online.

A. Just as a note before I start answering your actual question, sugar gliders are colony creatures and should be kept in pairs or groups.

That said, make sure your cage is at least 3 feet high x 3 feet wide x 2 feet deep.

Toys.. I know you say you don't want to buy online, but the truth is, you're more likely to find good toys online.
These are some vendors that I do business with on a regular basis:
Gliderdaydreams.com
SpoiledRottenSuggies.com
Gliderpals.com

..each are fabulous.
Also check out Critterbin.com
And glidercentral.net (great site for information, but also has a classifieds center, and many links to vendors).

If you still are set on buying them in person, most bird toys are safe. As well as toys made for infants.

You will also need cage sets and sleeping pouches for your gliders. Gliderdaydreams.com sells them -- and if you send her an e-mail (email is listed on her website) asking if she'll make a custom cage set for you, she likely will..(Standard cage set includes 2 corner hammocks, 1 bridge, 2 pouches... and if you want, a tunnel and/or fleece vine... This all for me, minus the fleece vine, cost $30 something).

Any suggestions on traveling with infant on a plane?
Q. I will be traveling ALONE with my 10 months old son for a 15 hours non-stop flight very soon. Any suggestions on how i can make it easier on myself and on him? I heard about the sucking bottle when take off and land to avoid his ear popping. The travel agent booked us the very last row. but then I heard that the best is the bulk head. I am not sure having a big screen in front of me and my baby though. He crawls everywhere. Not yet walking by himself. What do i do to entertain him? Can I bring a electronic toys on board? Is there any traveling gear that I should bring with me? I will have a travel system stroller and the car seat with me. I am afriaid it will be really tough when we get to the screening. Just a bit nervous since I will be going alone. That's a long flight too. Please help.

A. You have so many important questions! I found this site that is probably just what you need to read. It has information on everything listed below. I copied it from the site to give you an idea. Best wishes on your trip.

What is a general list of essentials I would need when my baby is born?
Q. I still don't know the sex of my baby, but I was wondering if I could get a list of essentials I'm going to need... such as bottles... washcloths... etc.

Just a little help please?

A. CAR SEAT- Graco snug ride 32 is great and will fit your baby from 5 to 32lbs.
STROLLER- Graco is good. Buy the travel system which includes the car seat, stroller, and base for car.
INFANT SWING- great for soothing and helping baby get to sleep. I have the Graco brand
BOPPY PILLOW- to use to prop baby when feeding and you can use it later to help baby sit up.
BUMBO SEAT AND TRAY- to help baby sit up and we also use ours as a highchair when she started eating solids.
CRIB AND MATTRESS- convertible cribs are great because you can convert it to a toddler bed and then a full size bed as baby grows.
BOUNCER CHAIR- soothes baby and serves as a safe place for baby while you shower, clean house, do laundry, cook, etc.
PACK AND PLAY- use it for a bassinet by your bed until baby goes to a crib in his or her own room. When baby outgrows the bassinet part you can use the playpen part of it. Graco brand is the best.
DIAPERS- Pampers Swaddlers are great for newborns and they are really soft.
BABY WIPES- Pampers sensitive care are good
DIAPER RASH CREAM- Desitin works great
VASELINE- great for preventing diaper rash
BATH SUPPLIES- 4 or 5 hooded towels, 8 to 10 wash cloths, baby wash (Johnson's is best), baby lotion (ageain I like Johnson's brand), baby bathtub or bath sling
BABY FIRST AID KIT- includes baby nail clippers, thermometer, bulb syringe, medicine dropper
INFANT TYLENOL
GAS DROPS- Mylicon works great
BOTTLES- Avent and Playtex Ventaire are great for preventing gas and spit up
PACIFIERS- Avent brand
CLOTHING- 5 or 6 onesies, 5 or 6 footed sleeper pajamas, 5 or 6 pairs of socks, and a few cute outfits for when baby comes home from the hospital and when family and friends come to visit. Carter's brand clothing is great and very good quality
DIAPER BAG- Kalencom brand is great. Very roomy with lots of pockets and also comes with a changing pad, insulated bottle carrier, and a zip up bag for wet or soiled clothes.
CRIB BEDDING SET- includes comforter, dust ruffle, 1 crib sheet, and crib bumpers
EXTRA CRIB SHEETS- get 3 or 4. Newborns leak out of their diapers and soil sheets a lot!
WATERPROOF CRIB PADS- get 2 or 3. Protect crib mattress if baby's diapers leak
STORAGE BASKETS- for organizing diaper supplies, bath supplies, feeding supplies, toys, etc.
CAMERA- you will want to take tons of pictures as baby grows!

Some things that are a waste of money:
CHANGING TABLE- we just use a changing on the bed or floor. So much easier and convenient.
DIAPER GENIE- just throw dirty diapers in the regular trash. Odor is not a problem if you just take the trash out often.
BOTTLE WARMER- nice for baby but what happens if you are not at home and baby gets hungry? If baby is only used to perfectly warmed bottles then he or she will not drink unwarmed bottles. Room temperature is fine.
BABY WIPE WARMER- same concept as bottle warmer above

Congrats on the baby!

What are some baby items you really enjoy having?
Q. I'm talking about things that the baby likes, or things that make life more convienent. Not MUST haves, but things you really like having.

A. well, u can go to babies r us website and they have a list for ppl who are going to register..of course it has a lot of things on there that you don't need, but if you weed through you can get what you need out of it...the things i liked;found most useful, etc......

.i would def recommend:
a diaper genie 2; idk why ppl don't like them, there is NO smell in my dd 's room
changing table..will save your back, good for diap changes, clothes changes, sponge baths, etc and you have shelves to store your new baby must haves....i have canvas bins on the shelves to store things that are good to have in reach or easily available...
monitor--i like the graco imonitor, recently bought a second one for another room in the house bc i liked the other one so much, it has been working well for over 8 mos now, and it has good range, battery life, and i can hear EVERYTHING; never any interference....it works great..
boppy pillow with cotton covers, soft ones don't fit as well for some reason
lots of baby hangers, and baby hangers with clips to keep outfits together
primo euro bathtub
prince lionheart diaper depot and wipewarmer; ours works well and the wipes are still very warm when we get them to out dd's bottom; and she doesn't freak out when we are out and they aren't warmed, but seems to appreciate it when they are..
health kit: brush, comb, thermometer (not an ear one, not as accurate), nail clippers, etc.
baby meds, generic is just as good and a lot cheaper...desitin(or plain zinc oxide if you can find it)..not creamy, has less zinc ox in it....infant mylicon and tylenol
lots of diapers , make sure wherever you buy them will let you exchange them for a diff size if you need to even after the return period...brus let me do that, and buy a small pack of a couple brands to see which you prefer before you open the big boxes...wipes, lots of them, without alcohol or fragrance! we use swaddlers diapers and pampers sensitive wipes; no rashes, no reactions to their ingredients, diapers hold a lot when they have too and the netting tends to keep the wet off her bottom...
lots of baby washclothes, you may have to use them on baby's bum if it is really sensitive and gets a rash....and baby towels, but you could use your reg towels if money is an issue

swing, pref swings two ways and plugs in instead of batteries
bouncy seat
infant travel system! easy, easy, easy--we got the graco tour deluxe; it is great, folds with one hand, several seating positions, lays flat for sleep; has a big basket underneath and cup holders for mom and dad, one for baby , place for snacks for baby, and a 'pocket' up top for keys, cell phone, whatever you wanna put there...
play yard, get one with bassinet feature if you want to, easier to keep baby in your room for a while before putting them in crib in their room=we have chicco discovery and it is awesome, has more padding than most, easy to wash..machine wash, most are wipe down...very sturdy, has nightlight, vibration, etc and a flip up change table, has wooden slats that slide in under mattress for support...not that much more exp than the others and much better in my opinion
passys--she loves soothies and that is all she will take..
baby wash, again frag free, dye free
frag free , dye free laundry detergent
clothes hamper or basket
lingerie bag for socks, mittens, anything little so they don't get lost in the wash...
something to put baby toys in
extra toy links
lullaby cd and small cd player; my dd has come to love white noise, she naps with a fan and a womb bear; sleeps at night with a fan....
oh, mosquito cover for your infant carrier..it's where you can see in , baby can see out, but strangers cant just walk up and touch your baby, and they will!!!!!
all i can come up with now...LOL
diaper bags; big one for everything you may need, leave in car unless you will be somewhere a long time, and a small one to stick what you will need for a short run in so you don't have to haul the bigger one

if ffing:
avent formula dispenser; has better review than the ones made by sassy, and convert to a snack cup later...i loved it so much i bought a second one!
bottles--really liked playtex ventaire advanced when she was young, more pieces but it's easy to get them clean when the top and bottom comes off...and they vent through the bottom instead of the nip so no bubbles or foam going back up into baby's milk; they will leak if you don't put them together correctly, but we have had no probs with them and have never had to replace any parts on them..if u decide on them and have leaks, email me and i will explain how to keep them from leaking...:O)
bottle and nip brushes--i really like the ones by munchking that don't have a sponge on the end of the brush, they come in diff colors mixed with white and have a great nip brush in the handles....
drying racks--again, i really like munchkins...
formula mixer: i like dr brown's formula pitcher bc you don't shake it it is only abo

Q. for my baby shower. In other words, what will I not be able to live without. So far, I have:

travel system
breast pump
baby monitor
safety gate
thermometer

diapers and wipes go without saying but I don't think people actually register for them.

Find a picture and a description of an infant toy in your home.Write a very brief description of the toy, tell?

Q. Find a picture and a description of an infant toy in your home. Write a very brief description of the toy, telling why it would appeal to a very young infant. How would the toy be used by a 2-month-old? How might the same toy be used by a 6-month-old?
Toy manufacturers often try to convince parents that infant toys will still be interesting to toddlers. How might a parent scaffold an infant`s interaction with this toy? How would this relate to the zone of proximal development?

A. Books, you know what they look like.
You can read them and show the pictures to babies of any age. As they grow they learn new things from books. Eventually they will be able to read the book even though they can't read because they have memorized it from someone reading to them.

How many units are sold for a typical infant toy?
Q. HI,
I’m looking for data about the typical sales volumes of an infant toy. I’m only interested in toys of leading companies, such as Fisher Price, Tomy, MGA, Hasbro, Learningcurve and step2.

Just to clarify, I’m not looking for the total amounts of toys of any kind that a company sold. The key is the number of units sold per specific toy model.

Any solid data to backup the answer will be highly appreciated.

A. ...................

What do you look for in an infant toy?
Q. Ok, I have an assignment to create an infant toy and I'm totally clueless!!! I have a baby but she isn't into toys yet. So what do you like for your babies to play with? And what interests them?

A. Color, something they can grab themselves. Texture is also important to me when looking for toys, I want to safely expose them to different touch. Nothing that can potentially get wrapped around a finger or neck.
I personally don't get toys with batteries. I want any noise to be generated by the child or non-mechanical music. (bells, crackle paper, etc.) I think this has helped my children's imagination and creativeness. Just something that works for my family.

What are some activities I can do with my 14 month old?

Q. I am a SAHM with my 14 month old daughter. She is a very busy girl and I am finding that she is getting really bored with our usual activities. She likes to play outside, but it is really rainy for most of the year where we live so going outside is difficult. She also puts absolutely everything in her mouth so crayons, paper, etc, won't work. We read books a lot and stack blocks and stuff, but she really doesn't really play with many other toys. Any real suggestions would be great! Thanks!

A. Keep offering the crayons and coloring books, just discourage her from putting them in her mouth. That is how she learns!

Puzzles (the wooden ones with pegs are great for that age).

Blow bubbles.

Google the recipe for edible playdough.

Look for Story Stretchers on Amazon. There is a version for infants/toddlers. It gives ideas to turn favorite children's story books into math, science, games, music, arts and crafts and even snacks!

If you can, look for an activity such as Mommy & Me gymnastics or Gymboree that you both can participate in.

Look for a local playgroup at http://groups.yahoo.com

If you can, visit the local petting zoo, children's museum, etc. Most book stores and/or libraries have story times for little ones.

Sing, dance, let her help you clean (my little one would help 'fold' the wash cloths, likes to take a baby wipe and 'dust' the fireplace insert, etc).

Purchase some musical instruments, puppets, etc.

One of my last few answers might have some other ideas you want to incorporate, so check that out-it is for an older toddler, but a lot you could probably use as well.

I hope this helps, and wish you the best!

How far above its equilibrium position will it go?
Q. An infant's toy has a 120g wooden animal hanging from a spring. If pulled down gently, the animal oscillates up and down with a period of 0.50s . His older sister pulls the spring a bit more than intended. She pulls the animal 30cm below its equilibrium position, then lets go. The animal flies upward and detaches from the spring right at the animal's equilibrium position.

If the animal does not hit anything on the way up, how far above its equilibrium position will it go?
h=_____cm

A. By ω = √k/m
=>(0.50)^2 = k/0.12
=>k = 0.03 N/m
By the law of energy conservation:-
=>KE(max) = PE(spring)max
=>1/2mv^2 = 1/2kx^2
=>1/2 x 0.12 x v^2 = 1/2 x 0.03 x (0.3)^2
=>v = √0.0225
=>v = 0.15 m/s
=>By v^2 = u^2 -2gh
=>0 = (0.15) - 2 x 9.8 x h
=>h = 0.001148m
=>h ≈ 0.12 cm

What is the best teething toy to give my infant?
Q. Those plastic rings you put in the fridge are not working.

A. The Best Teething Toys

By Miebeth Bustillo-Booth, ChildTrek Founder

Natural & Wood Teethers
The best teething toys are made of natural materials like wood. Wood is naturally anti-bacterial. (That’s why there are wooden cutting boards.) So it is self-cleaning. Wood is hard and will help ease teeth in. But not all wood toys are ideal. The best wooden teething toys are either unfinished or lightly finished with beeswax, water-based stains, or other non-toxic paints. It’s best to gain the manufacturer statements to this effect. At ChildTrek, only toys that have met or exceeded safety standards are available.

Great Teething Toys
Grabbing Toy Giraffe with Wooden Teething Ring by Kathe KruseConsider the Infant Grabbing Toy Mah or Giraffe by Kathe Kruse. They are made out of non-porous beech wood, lightly finished with beeswax, and made using non-toxic dyes. There are no harmful chemicals to leach out while your baby gnaws on the hard wood. The wooden ring is extra large for easy handling by small hands. The lamb and the giraffe can be removed for machine or hand wash. And they are completely adorable!

The Grabbing Star Red or Blue also by Kathe Kruse has a wooden teething ring and interesting textures for early learning stimulation. A special feature is a velcro loop at one of the star ends so that it can be fastened as a stroller toy. This achieves a couple of things: the teether is always nearby and it doubles as a grabbing toy. Smart!

Girali Rattle by SelectaThe Girali Rattle by Selecta, aside from being a practical teething toy, is uniquely beautiful. It is made of native woods from Germany and finished with beeswax and non-toxic paints - completely safe for your baby.

Also, it’s hard to beat the Cherry Rattle by Camden Rose. It is lightly finished with beeswax. Its contoured design makes for interesting tactile stimulation. Its gentle rattle is soothing. As a teether - it is naturally hard to facilitate teething. Watch as your baby gnaws on this beautiful toy for hours.

Cold and Soothing
Organic Vegetabe Teethers by Under the NileOne of my personal favorites for the summer are the organic teethers by miYim and Under the Nile. Take the Bunny, Elephant, or Bear teether. Dampen, not soak it. Put it in the freezer. Then let your baby gnaw on this cool toy to help soothe tender gums. Do the same for the Fruits or the Vegetables by Under the Nile. Besides gently soothing for your baby, you are teaching your baby to “eat” his or her fruits and veggies!

Vary Teethers
It’s best to keep a few different teethers around that have varying textures and hardness. Some teeth come in easier than others. The molars, for example, are especially hard on infants.

Check out ChildTrek’s selection of ideal teething toys.

To Disinfect infant toys, isnt a spraybottle with 2/3 water and 1/3 Bleach WAY too much?

Q. We bring our 11 Month old daughter to the center here in our area. Apparently they have a buncha kids that have intestinal problems and/or rashes that parents cant explain. Is there any site I can go to to get SOLID info on whether it's from the bleach? Or maybe a way to test if it's from the bleach? I have seen a few disinfecting answers here that say like 2 spoons to a gallon of water. I am kinda worried about my child sucking bleach off the toys with them using 33% bleach.

A. Nope, not at all. And just to let you know, more than likely, it's state law. So if you want your daughter in a state certified facility that goes through yearly safety checks and certifications you're going to have to live with it. In CT, we have to use a mix of 50/50 bleach and water. Either there is something else going on in the facility, or they're using MUCH more bleach than they are letting on, because we never had any problems with the children.

What's the best way to clean/disinfect a stuffed toy bought at a yard sale, before giving it to my infant?
Q.

A. I always wash them in the washer

Please tell me everything you know about caring for baby rats?
Q. What to feed mom, bedding, etc.
i need more stuff guys
those were just examples xD

A. Since rats are not pets that like to live alone, it is likely that your pet rats will eventually have babies. The average rat lives two to three years, so breeding the rats means you will always have a pet around. When your rat has babies, you need to know how to care for them. The more prepared you are ahead of time, the better the chances are for the baby rats to grow up healthy and happy.

Keep your cage clean. This will protect the baby rats from catching any diseases. To properly clean your rat cage, use 1 part bleach to every 10 parts water. When you are done disinfecting the cage, clean it out with a tiny bit of dish soap and hot water. You don't want to leave any bleach residue on the cage. Let the cage air-dry before putting the rats back inside.

Allow the baby rats to feed on mama rat's milk for about five weeks, give or take a week. If for some reason the mother rat cannot feed her babies, you will have to do it. Use infant soy formula and administer it through a medicine dropper. After that you can feed the babies fresh fruits and vegetables along with their daily laboratory pellets.

Get a bigger cage. Once your rats have babies, they are going to need a larger cage. Rats like their space and should not all be cramped together in a small cage. You need room for toys, water, food and an exercise wheel. Rats also need an area where they can lie down and go to sleep.

Keep lots of water in the cage. Don't use a regular little water dish, because the rats will knock it over. Buy the type of water bowl that attaches to the cage and has a metal dispenser that reaches into the cage. Whenever the rat drinks from it, it will dispense the water without spilling any. This is especially important while the mother rat is feeding her newborn babies. The mother needs to be hydrated and nourished to provide her babies with the healthiest milk.

Add toys to the cage if you don't have any already. Rats love to play, and baby rats will eventually need to start getting exercise so they can grow stronger. A workout wheel should be placed in every rat cage. Rats, including baby rats, enjoy crawling through tunnels. You can buy tunnels in a pet store or make them yourself out of PVC piping.

Keep your rats clean by giving them a bath. After a few weeks, you can begin giving your baby rats a bath too. You must use lukewarm water. It is best to do this in a sink rather than a bath tub. Rats should not get water or soap in their eyes, so don't fill the sink up all the way. A tiny bit will do. You can use dish soap to give your baby rats a bath, or you can use shampoo made for cats. Hold the baby rat up so you don't get anything in its eyes. Create a lather on the body and then rinse thoroughly. However, when they are older you do not need to give them baths. They will groom themselves.

Find homes for your extra baby rats. Rats have large litters. The average litter is 12 babies, and rats can produce up to 22 babies. It is highly unlikely that you will want to keep all of these rats. Choose the babies you want to keep. When they are weaned from their mother, if you want, you can find the other babies new homes. Check references for anyone who wants to adopt the baby rats so you are sure they go to good homes.

Good luck!

How do I set up this algebra word problem?

Q. Three of the highest grossing toy categories in 2005 were infant toys, dolls, and games. Together they had gross sales of $8.2 billion. Total sales of dolls and games together were $2 billion more than sales of infant toys. Sales of games were $0.3 billion less than doll sales. Find the amount of sales of each type of toy.

I need to know how to set up the problem.

A. Stephanie...keep it simple, use obvious letters to replace words.

t + d + g = 8.2.....(1)

d + g = t + 2........(2)

g = d - 0.3...........(3)

Eliminating d's and g's by subtraction in equation 1 and 2 gives

t = -t + 8.2 - 2

t + t = 8.2 - 2

2t = 6.2

t = 3.1

Putting t back into equation 1 gives

3.1 + d + g = 8.2

d + g = 8.2 - 3.1

d + g = 5.1

Putting t back into equation 2 gives

d + g = 3.1 + 2

d + g = 5.1..............which is the same equation as 1

Now, looking at equation 3

g = d - 0.3

So, g - d = -0.3

d - g = 0.3

Now we have 2 equations in 2 unknowns

Adding gives 2d = 5.4

d = 2.7

Putting d back into either one of these gives

g = 2.4

Toys = $3.1 billion

Games = $2.4 billion

Dolls = $2.7 billion

Hope this helps.

is it me or do some infant toys look oddly familiar to dog toys?
Q. some of my sons toys look exactly like dog toys. its kind of odd to me lol. these are toys that have been given to me though, i wouldnt buy him something that looks like it could be for a dog.

has anybody else noticed this though?
and how do you keep the dog from getting your infants toys when he/she is playing on the floor?

A. Yes a lot of them are practically interchangeable. Another thing that I think is funny is that both dogs and babies are greatly rewarded for learning to roll over. It strikes me as funny when I am cheering for my son to roll over.

What are the best ways to keep the baby occupied while in the car...?
Q. We visit the grandparents at least 1 a month and they live about 2 hours away. My 6 month old is getting tired of the infant toys that hang from his handle. What other toys are good for keeping babies occupied for so long in the car?

Other than my husband or I sitting back there playing peekabo!

A. Traveling is sooo hard. I have trouble with mine if its more than an hour. He will sleep about that long then wake up and be bored and fussy. I try bringing lots of toys from home. When he was that little he loved to rip up paper. Old magazines work great for that. That would keep him busy for awhile. The other thing I try to do is leave for the trip when I know he is tired. He used to sleep late so if we got going real early I knew he would fall back to sleep. Also try and tire him out before you leave, play outside in the fresh air. My baby also likes the toy cell phones. I set aside some toys for just the car so he doesn't get bored with them so fast. The only time he gets to play with them is in the car.

When can infants fly on the airplane?

Q. My baby is 4 months and my husband and I are planning to take her on the plane in about a month. Is it ok for her to fly? Has anyone had any experience with taking a young infant on the plane and are there any tips I should know?

A. Mu husband and I took our daughter on her first flight when she was nearly 4 months old. Our doctor recommended Tylenol and a pacifier or bottle for take-off and landing--to help with pain and to help her ears pop when the pressure changes.

Skip the Benadryl--especially at that age. There are new studies out that say that Benadryl can make some children stay awake instead of get sleepy. Just try to book your flight for naptime instead.

Bring a bag stuffed with all of her favorite toys and blankets--anything that makes her feel at home.

The biggest issue we had were diaper changes. We only booked 2 seats so we could save money. We booked an aisle seat and the seat next to it so we could have easy access to the restroom; but, the restrooms are so small that we had to sort of balance her on the toilet cover to change her. The next flight we took, we booked the whole row. We still sat her on our laps, but we had a seat to hold the diaper bag while in the air and a spot to change her that was a little less uncomfortable.

Will a SnugRide 35 car seat fit in the overhead compartment on the airplane?
Q. We are traveling with a lap infant for the first time and hoping for an open seat on the plane for him. We are gate checking the stroller in a stroller bag but wondering if we can carry the car seat on on put it in the overhead compartment with the handle down. Has anyone ever tried this?

A. It all depends on the type of aircraft you're flying and how full the flight is. Logically, if you don't get an open seat to use it in, that will mean the flight is full and it's doubtful you can stow it on board.

Do try to use the seat if you can. It's both safer and more comfortable for all of you. Be really nice at check-in when you ask. Remember to either pack the base or leave it at home. Make sure you're comfortable with the seatbelt-only installation. You wont need it on the plane and depending on how much car travel you will be doing at your destination, it might be easier to leave this bulky item at home.

Just as a tip, you might find it easier to both stow it and get it through the X-ray maching by lowering the handle and flipping it upside down. Make sure to remove any extras, toys specifically.

If you do have to gate-check it, you might want to bring a bag to keep it clean and dry (a big plastic or laundry bag should do). Make sure your name and address are somewhere on the seat and that the gate-check tag can be seen. Ask them specifically to "hand carry" the seat down (some airports use chutes for gate-checked items, which could damage your seat).

Also, be sure to bring a bungee cord to double-secure your stroller before handing it over. Most strollers only have small latches that can pop open en route and result in the stroller being damaged.

Good luck getting the extra seat and have a good trip!

Could you offer any suggestions to make the trip smooth on traveling by airplane with a 10.5 month old?
Q. We are traveling via airplane with our 10.5 month old daughter for a 4 hour flight and I am looking for pointers to make the trip smooth. We have requested aisle seat. She is traveling in our lap.
Do you think giving a bottle with formula during take off and landing is wise or would you think juice/water is better? Also, I am going to pack finger food snacks and a few small toys for the trip. We are gate checking her stroller as well.

Thank You!

A. Well it sounds like you have it pretty much worked out so far. :)
Since this is only a four hour flight I'm assuming that you are taking a domestic flight which would rule out asking for a bulk head seat. Depending on the aircraft you are flying on you can still request it. Believe me. Everybody on that flight wants a happy baby too! :)
I would recommend feeding a formula bottle on take-off, especially if it will help her sleep. If you take a tired baby on a flight and get her tummy full on take-off chances are you'll be blessed and have a very smooth flight with a zonked out lap-infant.
Goodluck!

What is tattoo ink made of or what is in it?

Q.

A. http://chemistry.about.com/library/weekly/aa121602a.htm

The short answer to the question is: You can't be 100% certain! Manufacturers of inks and pigments are not required to reveal the contents. A professional who mixes his or her own inks from dry pigments will be most likely to know the composition of the inks. However, the information is proprietary (trade secrets), so you may or may not get answers to questions.

Most tattoo inks technically aren't inks. They are composed of pigments that are suspended in a carrier solution. Contrary to popular belief, pigments usually are not vegetable dyes. Today's pigments primarily are metal salts. However, some pigments are plastics and there are probably some vegetable dyes too. The pigment provides the color of the tattoo. The purpose of the carrier is to disinfect the pigment suspension, keep it evenly mixed, and provide for ease of application.

Black Iron Oxide (Fe3O4)

Iron Oxide (FeO)

Carbon

Logwood
Natural black pigment is made from magnetite crystals, powdered jet, wustite, bone black, and amorphous carbon from combustion (soot). Black pigment is commonly made into India ink.

Logwood is a heartwood extract from Haematoxylon campechisnum, found in Central America and the West Indies.

Brown Ochre Ochre is composed of iron (ferric) oxides mixed with clay. Raw ochre is yellowish. When dehydrated through heating, ochre changes to a reddish color.
Red Cinnabar (HgS)

Cadmium Red (CdSe)

Iron Oxide (Fe2O3)

Napthol-AS pigment
Iron oxide is also known as common rust. Cinnabar and cadmium pigments are highly toxic. Napthol reds are synthesized from Naptha. Fewer reactions have been reported with naphthol red than the other pigments, but all reds carry risks of allergic or other reactions.
Orange disazodiarylide and/or disazopyrazolone
cadmium seleno-sulfide
The organics are formed from the condensation of 2 monoazo pigment molecules. They are large molecules with good thermal stability and colorfastness.
Flesh Ochres (iron oxides mixed with clay)
Yellow Cadmium Yellow (CdS, CdZnS)
Ochres

Curcuma Yellow

Chrome Yellow (PbCrO4, often mixed with PbS)

disazodiarylide
Curcuma is derived from plants of the ginger family; aka tumeric or curcurmin. Reactions are commonly associated with yellow pigments, in part because more pigment is needed to achieve a bright color.
Green Chromium Oxide (Cr2O3), called Casalis Green or Anadomis Green

Malachite [Cu2(CO3)(OH)2]

Ferrocyanides and Ferricyanides

Lead chromate

Monoazo pigment

Cu/Al phthalocyanine

Cu phthalocyanine
The greens often include admixtures, such as potassium ferrocyanide (yellow or red) and ferric ferrocyanide (Prussian Blue)
Blue Azure Blue

Cobalt Blue

Cu-phthalocyanine
Blue pigments from minerals include copper (II) carbonate (azurite), sodium aluminum silicate (lapis lazuli), calcium copper silicate (Egyptian Blue), other cobalt aluminum oxides and chromium oxides. The safest blues and greens are copper salts, such as copper pthalocyanine. Copper pthalocyanine pigments have FDA approval for use in infant furniture and toys and contact lenses. The copper-based pigments are considerably safer or more stable than cobalt or ultramarine pigments.

Violet Manganese Violet (manganese ammonium pyrophosphate)
Various aluminum salts

Quinacridone

Dioxazine/carbazole
Some of the purples, especially the bright magentas, are photoreactive and lose their color after prolonged exposure to light. Dioxazine and carbazole result in the most stable purple pigments.
White Lead White (Lead Carbonate)

Titanium dioxide (TiO2)

Barium Sulfate (BaSO4)

Zinc Oxide
Some white pigments are derived from anatase or rutile. White pigment may be used alone or to dilute the intensity of other pigments. Titanium oxides are one of the least reactive white pigments.

there is more info from this site, but this is the main info about tattoo ink.

how can i find someone that will breed a rat with mine?
Q. i have one female rat and i would like to breed her because i think the babies are so cute

You can buy tunnels in a pet store or make them yourself out of PVC piping.

an urgent question about disinfecting my infants' toys...?
Q. my daughter (4 months old) puts her toys in her mouth a lot. my little toddler cousin came over and i caught him chewing on her toys. i do not want to let her play with them until i have disinfected them. i have heard about immersion into soapy water but most of her toys are mechanical. it will ruin them! is there some product or something that i can safely disinfect her mechanical toys with such as a wipe or something? ive heard lysol is really good for toys and stuff but idk what would be good when she puts everything in her mouth. i dont need to be poisoning her or anything! so if you have any advice i would love to hear it! thanks!!! :D

A. I have always wondered the same thing. I found this:

http://householdtraditions.com/benefect.htm

It is a botanical disinfectant.

"Benefect® Botanical Disinfectant:

The First & Only Botanical Disinfectant in North America
Kills Over 99.99% of Bacteria, Fungus, TB and HIV
No Rinse or Wipe Required
No Warning Labels or First Aid Statements
No Mixing"

Benefect® is ideal for Hard Surface Disinfection on:

Kid's Toys & High Chair Trays
Diaper Pails & Change Tables
Countertops, Sinks & Food Preparation Surfaces
Sports Equipment
Toilet Seats
Sickrooms
Pet Areas
Garbage Cans

...& other similar surfaces where bacteria, mold and mildew or odors are a concern and where a botanical product is sensible.

I have yet to get this, but I will be soon! I give you thumbs up for not wanting to give her the toys until you disinfect them. Your cousin may not have tuberculosis, but he could have a cold or the flu and sometimes symptoms aren't noticeable right away so he "could" be contagious if he were sick. Good luck!

Edit: In the meantime (if you were to order the stuff above for later purposes), you could just wipe the toys down with a soapy rag and the wipe with a wet clean one. They say it takes a minimum of 20 seconds to kill germs with soap and
water.

Edit: Per the cdc website, germs can live from 20 min. up to 2 hours on a hard surface.

The disinfectant above is all natural. I would rather be safe than sorry, especially with an infant.

How do I occupy a 14 month old boy on his first airplane flight?

Q. My 14 month old grandson will be flying for about 3 hours at a time. (roundtrip). I would like to put together a fun pak for him to have on the plane to help with fussiness. He will not have his own seat, so he will be on a parents lap. What kind of things would work best for this situation?
Thanks

A. Definately make sure that you have a bottle or dummy for your grandson for take off and landing as the sudden increase and decrease of altitude and cabin pressure is quite harsh on their little ears.

Perhaps pop together a little gift pack.. sticker books, crayons, paper, toys, snacks ect ect. And reward him every so often, if he start to get restless, let him know that he has been a good boy and if he keeps being a good boy then he may get another present.

This way you are keeping him entertained with one thing at a time, he wont get bored of everything so quickly if he is given each item separetly, it also encourages good behaviour.
Perhaps wrap the treats, so its more exciting for him to open!

Also, when you check in for your flight, with a smile kindly ask the ground staff if there is any possibility of being placed in a row of seats where there maybe a spare seat. Unless the flight is full, this should not be a problem. Even though you have not purchased a seat for the infant, as long as he is on the lap of a parent for take off and landing there is no reason as to why he cant be in a spare seat through out the flight!

One last thing, many airlines have inflight entertainment devices that can be hired for the flight, these generally have cartoons for children on them and movies for all ages - just incase he gets sick of it!!

Hope this helps a little!!

Happy and Safe flying!

what's the easiest way to fly with an infant and a toddler?
Q. The toddler will have his own seat, but I will be holding the baby. My questions are, should the toddler fly in his carseat, and if should we be taking a stroller to the gate (I have a double jogger).
Anyone who has gone through this, please give advice! This is not a vacation, it is for a cross country move so both carseats will need to go on the plane in some way.

A. Definitely strap the toddler into his seat and buckle him in. Don't get him out for any reason. Treat it like a car trip. Take a stroller to the gate, but I'd recommend just using a single stroller because they're easier to fold and deal with and get a sling or Bjorn for your infant. It'll be easier for everyone involved! Make sure to have new toys in a backpack for him. Think: a new box of crayons, coloring book and paper, play doh, little plastic animals and cars. One thing my grandmother did for me in a similar situation was to wrap little junky toys like the ones mentioned above and at certain time intervals I was allowed to open a new one. It made the trip go faster (according to my parents) and I only got them if I was behaving myself. Good luck!

should I be worried about flying 18 hours with a 9 month old?
Q. I'm going home to visit family and I won't have anyone else to help me. I've never taken him on a plane but I'm scared that he'll cry the whole way and I'll feel really bad for annoying others. Does breastfeeding work well for taking off/landing? I'm open to any suggestions!
I couldn't even afford my economy class ticket let alone business, my family paid for it so they can meet the baby. My husband has to stay home too.

A. For a trip that long, I would highly recommend paying the extra price and getting your baby his own seat in her carseat. That way you don't have to hold him the whole time. You CAN fly "infant in arms" and not pay for him to fly but would it be worth it? Just my two cents.....

Yes, breastfeeding or a pacifier helps with the differences of cabin pressure during take off and landing, just like chewing gum. Bring little toys and books to keep her from getting too bored. Bring a lot of healthy snack foods and pick her up and walk around occasionally. Try traveling mainly at night, may be your baby will sleep more.

Also, if your baby cries a lot, the seasoned travelers are used to it, and besides you won't see any one else on the plane again so don't feel bad. And a bad day or so of crying and the annoyance of the trip won't have any negative affect on a normally happy baby.

Why do women choose to bottle feed over breastfeeding? Why dont women fight back against outlawing the breast?

Q. ::iam NOT trying to sound like a le leche freak, or post holier than thou questions::

Health reasons aside, why choose bottles over breast?

I jsut got done reading something with the world census thing, and doing a little research. America has the HIGHEST infant mortality rate of all the industrialized nations. Thats insane, and they say its because all other countries tend to have much higher rates of breastfeeding verses formula.

I think its unfair that hospitals and doctors dont provide education and support to moms. Every mom wants to provide the very best, and its not fair that commercial entities and cultural taboo's are allowed to steal the best from our children.

On top of all that, some states and counties are MAKING IT ILLEGAL to nurse in public.. WTF?!

It just bothers me that we cant provide the best.

People in saudi arabia have healthier babies than us for cripes sake. Theres something wrong here.
Honestly i have to admit that I decided to nurse because it was cheaper. It wasnt until my son was born and I was crying in pain with every feeding that I researched it and found out how good it is and decided to tough it out.

So its not like I did it for his sake in the start. I was just one of those uneducated masses. Because no one offers education on this stuff. I had to google it on my own.

A. Bless you for writing this!
I made a big mistake with our son and breastfeeding/colic
I was uneducated with our son- though I thought I was. He took right to breastfeeding. He did well- but he had colic while I was nursing him. I changed my diet, watched what I ate- and still he had colic. I was told by our ped. at that time that "breastfed babies don't get colic". He handed us some soy formula and said "this will work." So, I listened- BIG MISTAKE- HUGE!!! Our baby cried for 5 hours when I was nursing him every night. On soy- he cried for 18 hours a day. I didn't know that you could put them back on the breast. I didn't know that the breastmilk would make it easier for him with colic. I had thought it was me and my milk that was causing him problems. I swore that any baby that we had following would be breastfed- and have done so. Our baby is just a year old and is still breastfed- 3 times a day. She has only been sick one time- she caught pink eye from me. She is far ahead on the charts for development.

So, some of it is lack of education.
Some of it is our perception of breasts in America- they are veiwed as "sexual objects" instead of as what they are for- to feed our babies.

Women are frowned upon for nursing past the first year.
Women are frowned upon for nursing in public. I will nurse our baby when and wherever she needs to eat.

For some women it is hard to nurse- they have pain. It is NORMAL and it passes.

Others have milk supply issues- these can be fixed. Still, it is O.K. to combine formula with breastmilk once baby is on the breast and is accostomed to the feeds.

Breastfeeding is easy- it is always ready.

Initially, babies want to nurse all the time. THIS PASSES! The first 6 weeks are the hardest- but it goes so fast.

I guess if I lived in an area that had laws passed not to nurse in public, I would get arrested. I have heard people say, "Nurse in your car." Sure- in 95 degree heat- IS THAT WISE??? Or, here in NY- in the freezing cold. Crazy!

Or: Nurse in the bathroom- nice- would you want to eat in a smelly bathroom???

Once, when nursing our baby in Toys R Us a family from India passed- they had a 5 month old baby and an older son. The dad and I had a nice talk- as I sat there covered and nursing our baby who was only 8 weeks old. He said that in his country women who are nursing are worshipped because they are passing on the next generations health and well-being. He told me not to hide in an aisle. I felt so good after talking to him and his wife. He was offended by the views on women who nurse in this country- and could not comprehend it.

Likewise, it is frowned upon to nurse here in public- when nothing can be seen. I had that experience recently- and it's the very thought that a baby is nursing under a blanket that is just a horrid thought to some- ridiculous! I receive more dirty looks from women than from men.

Many doctors are also not pushing breastfeeding- as did ours 10 years ago. If someone had told me, "he has colic- but he'd have it anyway, KEEP NURSING..." I would have. I didn't have the support or the internet to help.

NOTE: I work full-time and have been nursing for a year- I pump 3 times at work and once before I leave. Both babies were tongue-tied- our youngest still is and nursed fine.

So...good for you for bringing this up- and thanks for listening!

How much should a first-time nanny get paid?
Q. I'm a first-time nanny, who would be watching a 3-month-old child in central Connecticut and occasionally doing his laundry, but there will be no other children or housekeeping. The family and I want to compare rates separately and then come together to decide on what they should pay me.
I am currently obtaining my Early Childhood Education degree, have two years in professional childcare centers, and have over ten years experience babysitting.
How much is a reasonable rate for me to ask for?

A. Okay well when I was a Nanny for my 1st family I had about 3 years daycare experience, 10 years babysitting, I was CPR certified for adult, child and infant and I had my own transportation. I had the same setup as you...watch the baby and do some light laundry. She was about 13 mos. old. So, they started me out at $300.00 per week. That was $1200 monthly and I worked from about 9:30-10am until about 4:30/5pm. I was allowed to take the baby places occasionally if I asked permission and of course had the carseat in my car. I could eat what was at there house also and watch tv, go online or whatever I wanted to do..while the baby was sleeping of course. I could even have my fiance over or a friend if I asked permission. That is what I got paid in Northern, Va. and for a 19 year old, that is pretty good. But I have EXCELLENT references. I built up a portfolio. I had a little folder to show the parents of letters of recommendation from all the parents that I babysat AND all the places that I worked before. I also showed them a copy of my car insurance and valid drivers license to assure them the safety of my trasnportation, etc. And I had a copy of my personal emergency info in case something ever happened to me. And a copy of my CPR/First Aide certification. That puts alot of parents at ease.
I am not sure about your location and if its the city or rural or what but I would say here in my town..about 30 minutes South of wachington, DC.

8-10 hrs a day live out Nanny of an infant with light laundry whould be about $300 wkly. If you are live in that is a whole different situation.
Take the daycare prices around there and add about $75 weekly..that is what you should make. Because you have the following perks:
you come to the child
the child stays in his own environment with his own toys, food, stuff, germs, etc.
one on one time with the child...never having to look after a group of children at once
laundry getting done as well
and soo many other things.
you are making it soo much better for the parents and easier too.
i wish you luck!
take care

How do I protect my baby from SIDS?
Q. My older sister has a 4 month old baby girl and she wants to know if there are any ways you can prevent or lessen the chances of her baby getting SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome in case you don't know).

A. Check out: www.sids.org

Here is some info from the site:

1. Place infants to sleep on their backs, even though infants may sleep more soundly on their stomachs. Infants who sleep on their stomachs and sides have a higher rate of SIDS than infants who sleep on their backs.

2. Place infants to sleep in a baby bed with a firm mattress. There should be nothing in the bed but the baby - no covering, no pillows, no bumper pads and no toys. Soft mattresses and heavy covering are associated with the risk for SIDS.

3. Do not over-clothe the infant while he/she sleeps. Keep the room at a temperature that is comfortable for you. Overheating an infant may increase the risk for SIDS.

4. Avoid exposing the infant to tobacco smoke. Don't have your infant in the same house or car with someone who is smoking. The greater the exposure to tobacco smoke, the greater the risk of SIDS.

5. Breast-feed babies whenever possible. Breast milk decreases the occurrence of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Studies show that breast-fed babies have a lower SIDS rate than formula-fed babies do.

6. Avoid exposing the infant to people with respiratory infections. Avoid crowds. Carefully clean anything that comes in contact with the baby. Have people wash their hands before holding or playing with your baby. SIDS often occurs in association with relatively minor respiratory (mild cold) and gastrointestinal infections (vomiting and diarrhea).

7. Consider using home monitoring systems (apnea/bradycardia monitors) in an attempt to prevent sudden death in high-risk infants. The risk of SIDS in the following groups exceeds that of the general population by as much as 5 to 10 times:

Infants born weighing less than 3.5 pounds.
Infants whose sibling died of SIDS.
Infants exposed to cocaine, heroin, or methadone during the pregnancy.
The second or succeeding child born to a teenage mother.
Infants who have had an apparent life-threatening event.

Lots of info!

will a nissan rogue fit three car seats?

Q. I have a 6 and 5 year old in two booster seats and just found out i'm expecting.. Will a 2011 Nissan Rogue fit 2 boosters and an infant car seat comfortably or should i start looking around for something bigger

A. Congratulations!

It totally depends on what seats your children will be riding in and in what positions.

Many parents have successfully installed three car seats across as shown here: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=33226

I would look into the Chicco Key Fit 30 infant car seat as it is typically narrower than other infant car seats. Usually the KeyFit works best when installed in the center. Another option is using a convertible car seat straight from birth. Look at the lowest bottom slots measuring about 8 inches or less to ensure the harness straps can be adjusted at or below the baby's shoulders.

The Diono Radian is the narrowest car seat on the market that measures about 14" across the thighs and 17" wide at the shoulders. It is typically outgrown around age 3-5 rear facing and another two to three years forward facing. This means that it will be the last harnessed car seat your child will need. It is spendy, but it is indeed worth it. The Radian R100 can typically be found on sale on amazon for around $207: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=diono+radian+r100

A newborn needs their car seat in at at a 45 degree angle to keep their airway open and the Radian does take up a ton of front to back space in the vehicle. You could try installing it in the center seat and have the top part of the Radian fan between the two front vehicle seats. Or you could have the Radian installed behind the passenger seat, but have no one sit in the front passenger seat until your baby gets some head control. When your infant is older, you can always used the angle adjuster by Diono to get the seat more upright.

You can always use the Chicco KeyFit 30 then get the Diono Radian later so you don't have to eat the dashboard. It is completely up to you =]

But I have to warn you- boosters can be difficult to buckle in a three across situation. You might get some scraped knuckles, but it is indeed do-able.

Also, if you do install in the outboard seating position for the infant seat, installing with the seat belt generally gives you more room. When installing it with the seat belt, the car seat can be scooted closer to the door. The seat just needs to be installed with less than an inch of movement. The KeyFit 30 has a built in lock-off to aid seat belt installs.

My best advice for you is to go to Toys R Us and try out car seats and different combinations. If you are installing a car seat in the center position in the back seat, LATCH cannot be used as they aren't reinforced in the center (unless your vehicle manual says specifically that they can be used in the center). The lower anchors on the side seating positions are connected by a metal bar; this is (usually) not found in the center.

Are you going to circumcise your baby boy?
Q. Why or why not?

A. No national or international medical association recommends routine circumcision.

No. It is a cosmetic surgery, medically unnecessary. It is extremely painful (see the video link at the end of my message). Genital Integriy, Intact Genitals, Rights to an Intact Body are for all.

If you are religious, "God Designed. Mother Approved. Revision is Circumcision"

Every baby boy on the planet is born with a foreskin and yet very few have them removed. The foreskin is a perfectly normal natural body part.

It is illegal to circumcise baby girls. Would you be asking this question if your baby is a girl? The answer is probably no. So, the answer to would "I amputate normal healthy body parts of my baby boy,at the risk of death, perform cosmetic elective surgery on my perfect newborn?" The answer is no.

Doctors tell you the amputated Lie when it comes to Circumcision. I beg you to learn the WHOLE TRUTH.

Every YEAR, more than 100 babies die from Circumcision. If this was a product, a toy, a crib, stroller, bottle for sale, on the market, for babies, it would have been recalled long ago.

Here is a video made by doctors for doctors on circumcision.

•No national or international medical association recommends routine circumcision.

•Only the USA circumcises the majority of newborn boys without medical or religious reason.

•Medicalized circumcision began during the 1800s to prevent masturbation, which was believed to cause disease.

•Today's parents are learning that the foreskin is a normal, protective, functioning organ.

•Today's parents realize circumcision harms and has unnecessary risks.

•Circumcision denies a male's right to genital integrity and choice for his own body.

I have dream catcher tattoo on my arm, what should i add around it? Pics inside?
Q. I have a tattoo similar to this one: http://peachytattoos.com/peachy-tattoos-blog/2011/11/2/dreamcatcher-tattoo-native-american-tattoo.html

and I want to add something onto my front shoulder, I was thinking of more roses running across and down a little but what other good options could i do?

NEED SOME IDEAS
Okay for the ignorant people I am actually half Native American.... I didn't know words could show someone's ethnicity ?

And a dream catcher is a lot more than a baby's decoration toy, there are many meanings behind it. If you're going to be shallow please don't even comment because your wasting my time, thanks

A. Do you know what a dreamcatcher is? It's a infant's cradle decoration, like a crib mobile. nothing more. It has no magic powers or special meanings. It is laughable how white people have become obsessed with dream catchers, and adults all want to own them.

So you have a tattoo of a baby's toy? Why not get a pacifier and a baby bottle to go with it?

or the words- "white girl who knows nothing about native culture but wants to appropriate it anyway" ?

Oh, wait, you don't need the words, the tat says it all.

Can anyone give me some American based toy companies that are not linked with lead poisoning?

Q. I have a 6 month old daughter and I am getting concerned with all the recalls in infant/toddler/children's toys. If you also have any great ideas about bottles and so forth. Much would be greatly appreciated.

A. Melissa and Doug . . . . AWESOME toys that are made in America and can be found at Toys R Us. Their products are also high quality and usually wooden (as opposed to plastic). They also focus on educational value as opposed to TV character association.

Quote from their site:
"Additionally, we specifically test our paints and coatings very frequently, to be sure our toys meet or exceed government recommendations limiting heavy metals and lead in children’s items. We have cabinets full of thousands of passing test reports, and these passing results have been verified by 3rd party independently accredited testing laboratories, considered by many to be the best scientific laboratories in the world."

What is a good website to buy infant/toddler things?
Q. I am a daycare provider. I am looking for websites to buy things for my infant and toddler classrooms. Things such as toys, board books, etc. Lakeshore and a few other catalogs seem to be very expensive. I was wondering if anyone knows of any really cheap places to buy these things, where do you buy yours?

A. lakshore is very good but yes I agree, very expensive. You may just want to stick to stores such as walmart or target if you want the cheapest prices.

How do I price items for a garage sale?
Q. Is there a percentage-of-retail-price to use? I have mostly infant/toddler items including a pack-and-play, very gently used toys, etc. Would I be better off on ebay or a resale store?

A. Typical rule of thumb; customers at garage sales will pay ten cents on the dollar; so if you bought something for $10, asking $1 would be about right.

If you don't want to go through the hassle of having a garage sale or selling the items on Ebay, I highly recommend donating the goods. When you donate something you can get a tax refund for 1/3 of the item's value, so if you paid $10 for something you would get about $3 back. My husband and I did this last year when we cleaned out our basement. Instead of having a garage sale, we called the Salvation Army and they came and picked everything up. It was SO EASY and we got $1,100 back in tax refund just from the items we donated.

If you do decide to donate the items, make sure you get a receipt from the organization and keep a list of all the items you donate.

Good luck!

A. If the treatments aren't working, he could have an allergy to something in the house or in his diet. Ask your pediatrician to do a blood test for common food and environmental allergies. It's the least uncomfortable method for infants, especially ones who are already spotty and rashy.

While you wait for his test and results, try switching to dye and perfume free laundry soaps and wash everything that touches his skin in hot water and the new soap (even his plushy toys!). If you have carpeting, toss a clean sheet over where he plays so he doesn't touch it (lots of nasty things in carpeting that can cause rashes), and if you have small rugs he touches, wash them in the machine too. If you have pets, keep them out of his sleeping room, and keep them away from his skin as much as you can. This should remove any allergens that he's rolling around in. As for food allergies, it's best to just wait for the test results since it's hard to do a "test to see" elimination diet with an infant.

Why are San Fran Liberals wanting to Ban Male Circumcision?
Q. The Board of Supervisors just banned toys in Happy Meals, which drew worldwide attention.

Now the latest ban being proposed in San Francisco is on male circumcision.

A proposed ballot measure for the November 2011 ballot – when voters will be electing the San Francisco’s next mayor – would amend The City’s police code “to make it a misdemeanor to circumcise, excise, cut or mutilate the foreskin, testicle or penis of another person who has not attained the age of 18.”

Doing so would result in a fine of up to $1,000 and up to one year in jail, according to the proposed measure submitted to the Department of Elections.

Are they seriously mentally challenged? Do they not know the serious Health risks of Not getting Circumcised?

http://www.circinfo.net/benefits_outweigh_the_risks.html

A. Did it occur to you that it just might be the conservatives that don't want their tax dollars and insurance premiums being wasted on an unnecessary elective surgery?

And what "serious health risks" result from not being "circumcised"?
Have you ever heard of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)? Pretty scary to new parents. It kills about 120 infants each year in the US. Well, "circumcision" kills about that same number of boys in the US each year. Add to that many boys will find that their equipment has been ruined by the amputation, instances where the glans has been amputated along with the foreskin, where the penis is badly damaged by infections after the surgery. Why do the European nations that do not mutilate their baby boys have better health stats than the US for all the baby maiming that is done here?

The only real risk is to the "doctors" that depend on easy income to pay for their Porches, they may have to get side jobs to make the payments, I would suggest they apply for Wal-Mart Greeter.

Do you know how morris and wiswell (your sources) come up with their numbers that show a benefit from male genital mutilation? When a boy is examined prior to surgery the "doctor" might determine that there is a problem with the penis so the child is deemed to be "not a good candidate for surgery" then when the "study" was performed these surgery rejects were included in the "uncircumcised" group and guess what; the "uncircumcised" boys had more infections and other problems than the mutilated boys had. Because the group also included the boys that the doctors would not operate on because they had other problems with their penises.

Even if you finish last in the class they still call you doctor.

Male infant or child genital mutilation is a human rights violation.

Should this measure actually make it to the ballot, some of my Mid-West conservative dollars will be sent that way to support it.

Unreported news...again. Anyone want to help?
Q. I have often seen answers here where people have wanted to help Native Americans on reservations. Here's your chance.

I found this article in the Hocak Worak (Newspaper of the Ho-Chunk Nation) June 24th edition. As usual, the national media fails to report on Native issues and the government fails to provide for people in need right here within the boarders of the United States. Had this tragedy happened anywhere besides an Indian Reservation, it would be all over the news and the government would be bending over backwards to help.

CROW NATION STRUGGLING TO HELP TRIBAL MEMBERS IN NEED
Sara L. Peterson
Staff Writer
As storms sweep across the country during a tumultuous spring that will go down in the record books, tribal nations are struggling to find residents left stranded after flooding devastated the Crow Reservation in northern Montana on May 25, 2011.

Most of the state of Montana had been under some sort of flood advisory, as workers frantically fill
sandbags and search crews are searching for those still unaccountable. “There are families and elders still isolated and stranded in their homes,” said tribe spokesman Donald Spotted Tail on May
26, 2011. “There’s no way for them to access basic human needs such as food and water.” There is also the warning of water supply contamination in the region of the Little Bighorn River.

Tribal officials said the flooding has damaged at least 75 homes and about 150 people from the reservation remain at the Montana State University-Billings, along with 43 people from outside
Billings, according to the Bureau of Indian Affairs....

Donations are still needed for those that were displaced after the storms and flooding. Many of these people were left without any clothes, food, or shelter.

To date the terribly poverty stricken tribe has made over
150 layoffs and is working to just get people back into homes on the reservation. The tribe is quickly depleting its funds in the effort. “We have never been a rich people: we’ve always struggled, but we’ve always survived. That’s what we will do now”, Old Crow said.

Items that are needed include:
• Non-perishable Food
items
• Milk, Juices, etc.
• Fruits and Vegetables
• Bottled Water
• Infant Formula and baby
Food
• Diapers
• Personal Hygiene Items
(this includes items
such as soap, shampoo,
toothbrushes and
toothpaste, and toilet
paper.)
• Plates and Eating Utensils
• Blankets and linens
• Laundry Soap
• Coloring Books
• Clothes (must be clean
and in repair if not new)
• Kids Toys
• Dog and Cat Food
They are also accepting gift
cards to Wal-Mart, Costco,
Target, Sams Club, etc.

How to travel alone with a toddler an infant? By plane. Any advice?

Q. I would like to know how anyone here might have travelled alone by plane with a toddler (mine is almost 2) and a baby (mine is 10 months old). Please I am at a loss at how I will be able to visit my father with both babies. What gear is available, how can this be done? I will of course have help to get to and from the airports but in between with boarding, seating, and after arrival to get to baggage area. Thanks.

A. Okay well your one child (the older one) will have their own seat. but you will be holding the baby unless you purcahsed a separate seat. i highly suggest a double stroller and wheel the luggage behind you. You can use your stroller up until the very last second and then they will put it under the plane for you and then they will have it ready for you right when you get off...but that is going to SAVE you. Also make sure you have a backpack so that you can keep a change of clothe, diapers, etc and pack some new toys and snacks so that your toddler will be interested and if you have a potable dvd player i would pack that in the bag as well. Also if they have a favorite binky or blanket or cup i would definately let them have that. Relax and take your time.
hope that helps...happy travels.

Moms what do you do to make your plane ride with your toddler easier?
Q. In about a week me and my 13 month old are flying back to my home town for the weekend. Any thoughts on how to make the plane ride easier for me and her both. Also .. do you think I should take a car seat or just hold her. My sister back home has a car seat we can use when we get there, but I don't know if it will be easier for her to just sit in her own car seat or in my lap. Any suggestions?

A. Most airlines allow children under 2 to ride in their parent's lap. So if money is an issue for you, upon checking in (or purchasing your tickets), note that you will be carrying an infant in your lap so you don't have to pay extra for another seat. Make sure you get an aisle seat so there is no struggle when you have to get up to use the rest room and there is room for your wiggler to wiggle. Our two hour trip from Orlando to Newark (and back) was a little tough the first time. So what did to make sure that this flight would be easier was use a large diaper bag as my carry-on and fill it with stuff to entertain him (amongst his diapers and other motherly necessities). I bought a coloring book, his favorite small toys and favorite books to read, some snacks and a portable dvd player w/ his favorite tv shows or movies. Make sure to pack a juice or water (3ozs or less... lol), so that they can be drinking and swallowing when the plane takes off, which helps the popping in their ears be less painful. You can also just purchase a juice or water on the flight, but sometimes they are a little pricey. If you are getting one, buy a juice or water so you can share.
I also scheduled the flight around the time I knew he'd be taking his nap so he could sleep some of the time. I had done the whole flight thing with him once w/o this stuff and w/o getting aisle seats. It was horrendous and I learned from that tremendously. After the flight with the baggage filled with goodies, I was actually comments from those seated beside me. He was so well behaved and they had initially been worried about their flight with a baby next to them. I actually had one of them tell me that I was a good mother, which is always good to hear! I hope this helps!
