Diapers (size Newborns, size 1's maybe size 2's)

Answer
· teething tablets - These are homeopathic and great for relieving teething pain. They can be found at Wal-mart.

· nail clippers - the scissor kind is worthless, get small clippers that look like adult ones

Changing Supplies

· small changing pads

· diapers - don't stock up on too many newborn diapers because most babies don't stay small for long. I love the White Cloud brand at Wal-mart. Buy the big box it's cheaper per diaper.

· wipes - I prefer Parents Choice wipes at Wal-mart. Buy one carton for the container then buy them by the box.

· changing table or countoured changing pad and a cover that can sit on top of a dresser

Bath Supplies

· bath towel - buy two with hoods

· bath toys - plus a plastic cup for rinsing and pouring

· washcloths

· baby soap and shampoo or body wash

· baby lotion

· desitin or corona (Which is for animals and sold at feed supply stores. It has lanolin, which heals diaper rash faster than anything I've ever found. A nurse recommended it to me.)

· soft brush

· infant bath tub or sling - I preferred the sling because the tubs are so hard to store

Feeding Supplies · bottles - 1 or 2 are nice even if you plan on breastfeeding

· binkie

· burp clothes - need 4 to 6 or more if your baby has reflux

· breast pads - actually for Mom. I recommend Lansinoh brand

· formula

· breast pump - I found hand pumps worked better than electric.

you can wait until your baby is four months old before buying these items · plastic bibs - get a small one that fits the baby's neck

· baby spoons - plastic coated ones are the best

· baby food and cereal also plain mashed potato flakes are easy to fix and cheap.

· sippy cup - I like the ones with handles for first time drinkers

Bring home from the hospital

· alcohol pads

· soft brush for scrubbing babies head while bathing - this prevents cradle-cap

· nose aspirator

Sleeping Essentials

· crib

· receiving blankets - buy 4 to 6 because babies need to be wrapped up when they are first born

· sheets - at least two for when your baby poops or throws up on one

Car Basics

· infant car seat

· sun screen for the car window

Clothing

· clothes - don't buy too many you will receive a lot of 0-3 month clothes at your baby shower. If you get too many which you probably will take them back and buy a bigger size. Figure out how old your child will be the next time the season comes around and buy that size.

· pajamas - buy lots of these, 4 to 6 pairs, because they are easy to change and keep your newborn warm

· onesies

· socks - keep those baby feet warm

Toys and Board Books

· teething rings

· toys with bright colors and music

· balls

· blocks

· rubber toys for chewing

· soft toys for cuddling

· board books - not paper

Great extras

· bounce chair - my son slept in his the first three months because he was elevated and it helped his acid reflux

· swing - some children love these and some don't

· baby carrier - I used to take mine to the grocery store and carry my baby in it so I had my hands free.

· stroller - I used to take my son on walks for exercise.

· bassinet - this is nice because you can keep the baby closer for the first month

· rocking chair - babies love the rocking motion

My 1 year old wakes up at 4 am and screams, and he won't stop until we get him. How can I make it stop.?

Answer
Did GSU *REALLY* just call your child a pet? Your child is not a pet. Don't follow that advice and treat it like one. How insulting!

Don't leave your child alone when they are screaming at night. The reason the child might stop is because they have lost trust in you. Why would you want that?

The first stage of Erikson's theory on development is "Trust vs. Mistrust." The infant and toddler stages are a time for the child to realize that, when they need you the most, you are going to be there for them. If you loose that developmental stage at this point, it will carry through for the rest of their lives.

Let me say that again - If you loose that developmental stage at this point, it will carry through for the rest of their lives.

What kind of toys does your child have in his crib? A stuffed animal and a toy similar to these:

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2011&e=detail&selcat=bgtoys&pid=34168

may help him if he wakes up. He may be able to keep himself occupied and not become as afraid.

If you wear perfume, try lightly scenting a blanket with it and leaving it in his crib. Smell is the strongest association senses. That may help him quite a bit.

Does he have any lighting or is the room pitch black? Try a night light as this may help him feel more comfortable.

Remember that, at this age, if a child cannot see you, they might think you are no longer there. They do not necessarily have a concept yet that if you're not in their vision or sight of any of the other senses, you still exist. He is crying out of fear sometimes that he is alone. Give him the reassurance every time that you are there when you hear him. It is a LOT!!! of work, but the payoff is there in knowing you are doing what is best for your child.

I hope the other suggestions help some.

will a nissan rogue fit three car seats?

raeann k

I have a 6 and 5 year old in two booster seats and just found out i'm expecting.. Will a 2011 Nissan Rogue fit 2 boosters and an infant car seat comfortably or should i start looking around for something bigger

Answer
Congratulations!

It totally depends on what seats your children will be riding in and in what positions.

Many parents have successfully installed three car seats across as shown here: http://www.car-seat.org/showthread.php?t=33226

I would look into the Chicco Key Fit 30 infant car seat as it is typically narrower than other infant car seats. Usually the KeyFit works best when installed in the center. Another option is using a convertible car seat straight from birth. Look at the lowest bottom slots measuring about 8 inches or less to ensure the harness straps can be adjusted at or below the baby's shoulders.

The Diono Radian is the narrowest car seat on the market that measures about 14" across the thighs and 17" wide at the shoulders. It is typically outgrown around age 3-5 rear facing and another two to three years forward facing. This means that it will be the last harnessed car seat your child will need. It is spendy, but it is indeed worth it. The Radian R100 can typically be found on sale on amazon for around $207: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=diono+radian+r100

A newborn needs their car seat in at at a 45 degree angle to keep their airway open and the Radian does take up a ton of front to back space in the vehicle. You could try installing it in the center seat and have the top part of the Radian fan between the two front vehicle seats. Or you could have the Radian installed behind the passenger seat, but have no one sit in the front passenger seat until your baby gets some head control. When your infant is older, you can always used the angle adjuster by Diono to get the seat more upright.

You can always use the Chicco KeyFit 30 then get the Diono Radian later so you don't have to eat the dashboard. It is completely up to you =]

But I have to warn you- boosters can be difficult to buckle in a three across situation. You might get some scraped knuckles, but it is indeed do-able.

Also, if you do install in the outboard seating position for the infant seat, installing with the seat belt generally gives you more room. When installing it with the seat belt, the car seat can be scooted closer to the door. The seat just needs to be installed with less than an inch of movement. The KeyFit 30 has a built in lock-off to aid seat belt installs.

My best advice for you is to go to Toys R Us and try out car seats and different combinations. If you are installing a car seat in the center position in the back seat, LATCH cannot be used as they aren't reinforced in the center (unless your vehicle manual says specifically that they can be used in the center). The lower anchors on the side seating positions are connected by a metal bar; this is (usually) not found in the center.

What are some good educational toys for a 2 year old girl?

My daughter is going to be two in May. I am wondering what would be some good educational toys for her. I have been looking but most of what I have been seeing is for infants and toys that she would get bored of. She likes things that make noise. Right now she is into drawing and organizing. She likes pushing things around. She is really into baby dolls right now. I got her one and some accessories to go with. I am just wondering what educational. I a curious what your child at this age likes or liked and also what are some toys to avoid? Thanks!

Answer
I would recommend anything Leapfrog. A couple that come to mind are the Leapfrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Letter Set and the Leapfrog Alphabet Explorer. Here is a link to all Leapfrog toys that are appropriate for a 2 year old-
http://www.toysrus.com/search/index.jsp?kw=leapfrog&f=Taxonomy%2FTRUS%2F2254197&f=PAD%2FTRU+Age+Filter%2F2+Years&fbc=1&fbn=TRU+Age+Filter%7C2+Years

Vtech also makes a toddler laptop. I don't have it but it looks like it got good reviews and it would be educational-

I believe it is for ages 18 months to 3 years.

My son likes his Little People Animal Sounds Farm. I would recommend that highly. Great for learning animal sounds and names and for speech (saying in, out, up, down).

All I need to accomplish before having a baby?

best babies toys 2012 image

me

Okay, I'm almost 16... And before you start lecturing me about how I'm too young, I know.
I would like a baby now, but I know obviously I shouldn't. I'm not planning on it. I'm not going to have sex at my age.. If I was raped and was impregnated or something, well... Things would work out. I'd find some way to provide for a baby.
I just would like mothers with experience to create kind of.. Maybe like a "checklist" of things I need to do/get before having a baby.
Like schooling, items (crib, diapers, etc), housing, insurance, income per month, experiences, car, etc etc.... Basically a list.
What is a schedule with a newborn like? How long until a baby with sleep through the night most of the time?
Any other advice you would like to add :)

Add-on: I have done the Baby Think It Over project for a week and got a 99.5% (would have gotten a 100 but I forgot to chime in once) the least amount of sleep I got was about 2 hours... And that was Sunday night so I had school the next day haha. It kind of sucked. I also got a C on a test in a class I usually get A's in because I hardly remembered anything that was taught because of lack of sleep lol. Yeah.

Answer
Let me just tell you this, having a baby means pretty much giving up everything else you had planned. They are the most demanding, challenging and time-consuming activity a human can do. There is no perfect situation for having a baby, plans are very hard to make, there's rarely enough money and everything you plan goes to the back of the line because the baby is the priority.

A schedule - every waking minute is the baby's - you can sneak in short naps while they nap. Some babies sleep through the night from the beginning, some don't ever sleep through the night, and some take months before they sleep through the night. You, on the other hand, rarely sleep through the night.

It can be wonderful but it is not for the weak-hearted. They are not a toy, they are a person in training and you must take responsibility for preparing that child for life. As they get older you cannot be their friend, you are their parent and you must take a firm hand with discipline or the child will go completely out of control. At times you have to let them hate you because you will tell them something they don't want to hear, or you will have to give them punishment that they earned. Your life becomes theirs, you do everything for them, plan your life around them, give up things you want to do to allow them to have opportunities. You are their chauffeur, housekeeper, maid, cook, cleaner, slave.

And, for all that work, you get in return a hug, a card on mother's day, a smile, thanks and that little bit makes up for almost everything. A few classes or projects don't prepare you for what parenting is, nothing can. It is the single most rewarding experience in life and to go with that it is also the hardest and you get the least in return for your investment unless you count all those times they asked for your help.

Go into this with your eyes open, it is not romantic, not dreamy, it is real life, crap full diapers, crying for hours on end, so much laundry you think you'll never ever do it all, and unless you work outside the home you'll long for the sound of another adult voice. It is lovely and demanding. My own child had her own family and her children are now grown - her childhood was the best time of my life and I miss it like crazy but it isn't easy.

How to prepare. Get a good education or training first, so that you can have your choice of occupation that can make your life easier and provide you with a good income. There are mothers out there living on minimum wage who struggle severely to keep their family going. If would be good to make at least $30,000 a year or more to provide for yourself and a child. It costs over $200,000 over 17 years to raise a child. Housing would be the biggest expense, so income would depend on where you live, in an urban area you'd need more.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/personalfinance/2012/12/23/cost-raising-kids/1788415/

Do you believe in the whole thing of 2012?

Q. I'm bit scared of the prediction of 2012. I don't believe it will happen, but I have anxiety issues and I get worked up on it so easily. I need help to disprove this prediction and to calm down. So do you believe the world will end in 2012?

Answer
People that say ANYTHING is going to happen out of the ordinary are delusional and need to seek psychiatric help.

There will be no pole-flips, no invisible pink planets, no exploding Mayan calendars, no alignments causing (unnamed) catastrophes... and if you don't believe me... go ask the people that made this #$% up. They are LOONS.

For example....

Nancy Lieder has more frequent flier miles than Barrack Obama, except SHE travels in a Flying Saucer. Yes, she came up with Planet X.

Jose Arguelles claims to be a reincarnated Mayan priest. Yeah, yeah, I know... Shirley MacLaine is an American Treasure, but that doesn't mean she isn't a LOON. Arguelles came up with the Exploding Mayan Calendar.

Terrence McKenna did more drugs than Timothy Leary. Okay, so NO ONE did more drugs than Timothy Leary, but it was close. McKenna, on one of his trips on Magic Mushrooms, came up with the "Chinese Connection" between the "I Ching" and his "Novelty Theory", calling it "Time Wave Zero" and spreading the lies to include China, which is very unfair. Sure, they poison our dogfood and add lead to baby toys, but they are innocent of the 2012 malarkey.

"Doctor" Jaysen Rand also likes to vacation in far off lands. Far FAR off lands, only reachable by Flying Saucer. He got his "Doctorate" by attending a conference of UFOologists. Why do they insist on calling them "UFOs"? The "U" stands for "unidentified" and according to "Doctor" Rand they are all from the Planet Omicron or something, so they are IDENTIFIED! Woo! Real alien life! Any proof? Well, no. He is just one more LOON.

Scratch below the surface of a 2012er and you get a nutcase. Every time.

What are some activities I can do with my 14 month old?

best infant activity toys image

Georgie's

I am a SAHM with my 14 month old daughter. She is a very busy girl and I am finding that she is getting really bored with our usual activities. She likes to play outside, but it is really rainy for most of the year where we live so going outside is difficult. She also puts absolutely everything in her mouth so crayons, paper, etc, won't work. We read books a lot and stack blocks and stuff, but she really doesn't really play with many other toys. Any real suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Answer
Keep offering the crayons and coloring books, just discourage her from putting them in her mouth. That is how she learns!

Puzzles (the wooden ones with pegs are great for that age).

Blow bubbles.

Google the recipe for edible playdough.

Look for Story Stretchers on Amazon. There is a version for infants/toddlers. It gives ideas to turn favorite children's story books into math, science, games, music, arts and crafts and even snacks!

If you can, look for an activity such as Mommy & Me gymnastics or Gymboree that you both can participate in.

Look for a local playgroup at http://groups.yahoo.com

If you can, visit the local petting zoo, children's museum, etc. Most book stores and/or libraries have story times for little ones.

Sing, dance, let her help you clean (my little one would help 'fold' the wash cloths, likes to take a baby wipe and 'dust' the fireplace insert, etc).

Purchase some musical instruments, puppets, etc.

One of my last few answers might have some other ideas you want to incorporate, so check that out-it is for an older toddler, but a lot you could probably use as well.

I hope this helps, and wish you the best!

What are some gross motor activities for infants?

Tara Kay

I need some ideas for Gross/fine motor activities for infants. I also need ideas for sensory play for infant. I good site would be great too.

Answer
It really depends on the age of your infant. My son is 8 months now and here are some activities I do with him:

Gross Motor:
*Sing "The Wheels on the Bus" and do action with him --In particular "the people on the bus go up & down" --I stand him up and put him down.
*Let him sit and play (develops balance & back muscles)
*Let him have tummy time (pre-crawling exercises and develops back & neck muscles)
*Hold his hands or waist and let him stand (Develop leg muscles and balance)
*Stand him up against the couch (for balance and leg strength)

Fine motor:
*Let him play with/eat cheerios or gerber graduates puffs (develops pincher grasp)
*Sing "Itsy Bisty Spider" with actions
*Sing "Patty Cake" with actions
*SIng "Head, Shoulders, Knees, & Toes" with actions
*Give him many shapes, sizes, and textures of toys to play with & explore while he is sitting or having tummy time (blocks, stuffed animals, measuring cups, balls, sippy cup, tummy time mat, etc, etc, etc)

Good luck & Have fun.
Also, don't forget to read to your baby!! Babies looooove books

What are some activities I can do with my bored 2 year old?

Mommy of 2

I'm a stay at home Mom with an infant and a 2.25 year old. She has plenty of toys but gets bored and acts out. We usually read books and play with playdough. She likes to watch Nick Jr shows, but I don't want her watching TV all day. What are some fun, fairly easy, and fairly cheap (or free!) activities I can do with her to help her have fun during the day?

Answer
color with crayons and markers (washable)

paint with washable paint (I put my toddler in her high chair for art)

play with play food

take a bath to just play

go to the park

go to Mc Donalds playland just be sure to bring antibacterial wipes

free storytimes/workshops at the library

an indoor gym place with $5 or so freeplay

take a ball to the park and just let her run around

dance to music

play dress up

have her "help" with laundry

have her "help" with dusting

draw with sidewalk chalk and blow bubbles

play shape searchers and look for shapes around the house

make sock puppets or paper bag puppets

Hope I helped. I have an almost 2 1/2 year old and I'm a SAHM too. It can get boring but the key is to stay busy if you can. Get out of the house at least once a day even if it's just for a walk.

What are some good stocking stuffers for infants?

Kim

I have a daughter who will be five months at Christmas, and I was raised without ever doing Christmas, so I don't know what would be good stocking stuffers for her. Any suggestions?

Answer
This is going to be my daughters first christmas too and I'm totally stumped. My parents go over board so forgive me if this is beyond what you were hoping to do. Some cute outfits, bath toys, teething rings, can of formula if she uses it, jar baby food as she will be eating it soon or maybe just baby cereal. A teddy bear? Picture of her family for her nursery?? These are things i'm thinking of. And since she really has no idea what is going on it doesnt hurt to throw in things she needs like diapers. She wont care that its not "cool" Merry christmas and good luck

I am a new mom. My daughter is 3 months old.
My baby doesn't like to be alone.
At home I have to to houseworks too, cooking, cleaning, etc
She cries when I put her in her crib, even when I have to go to the toilet for a while.
It's still difficult for me to manage the time between parenting and doing houseworks.
Do you have experiences like I have?
Please share yours
Thank you so much

Answer
When my kids were this little, I'd put them in a sling and get stuff done and they were happy being with mommy. However, when they got older I'd put them in the walker while I was cleaning/ cooking. I'd also put them in the play pen with some toys. This way- they learn to entertain themselves. This helps as they grow older into toddler stage. Also, what helps alot is clean as you go so that you won't have to have a big cleaning session later on. For example while you're waiting for spaghetti sauce to boil tidy up the counters or wipe down chairs real quick. Wipe down the microwave immediately after using it, so stuff doesn't stick on it and it takes longer to clean up later. After dinner, rinse off dishes and immediately stick them in the dishwasher so food doesn't stick making it harder to clean later. Wipe the table immediately afterwards. If you use bottles, rinse them out immediately and stick them in the dishwasher instead of letting them pile up. I made it part of my routine after feeding baby. Laundry- see if your husband/ partner can help with this. Throw a load in the washer and then in the dryer and when it's done drying stick it in a laundry basket and have dad help fold/ put away. I was very very OCD when I had my kids, still am. I eventually made a schedule for everything- cleaning, cooking, laundry WHILE it was baby's playtime. My kids were infants I'd take a cat nap while they napped. There for a while, I thought I'd never get any sleep. That's when I got sleep- was while they were asleep. And if they were still asleep when I woke up I'd use that time to fold/ put away laundry. It's a tough job being a stay at home mom but if you make yourself a little time management chart, it's a lot easier. Maybe once or twice a week, get a friend to watch the baby while you do big time cleaning like bathrooms and vacuuming. But be very VERY organized in order to keep everything flowing smooth. Everything has a home. Categorize everything in your home and get rid of unnecessary items that take up space in the home. Excess items and "stuff" just makes the house seem more cluttered and this is when stress sets in. Baby doesn't need a thousand toys to be happy especially at this age. Manage your space in order to manage your time. Get those little cubbies with those canvas bins. This helps me a TON. I have one in every room and closet. Just get organized in both space and time and you'll be OK.

What are the basic things that a baby need before they are born?

Lovely84

This is my first pregnancy. I am due January 21, 2008. I am having a baby boy and a very happy mother-to-be. There are so many things out there for babies. What items do I really need and what can my baby do without???? Please help!!!!

Answer
You are smart for asking this: it will save you a lot of money and a lot of space (from all the useless items you won't have laying around!)
From personal experience you
DO NEED:
1.) LOTS of diapers and wipes
2.) Baby wash (most of them can double as shampoo)
3.) bottles (if bottlefeeding) pacifiers
4.) clothing, of course... lots of socks... they go missing.
5.) a diaper bag to carry everything
6.) a carseat (very important!) Get a good one! Get the baby head supporter thing... it's a must.
7.) a stroller is a must unless you plan on being stranded at the house all the time... and for sanity sake, you'll want to get out.....
8.) crib or basinette and blankets.
9.) a little baby chair, like a bouncy seat... those are great
10.) a little infant bathtub

YOU DON'T NEED:

1.) a jumper or a walker - waste of money
2.) a playpen... it is not a must if you have the baby chair, they've usually got straps to keep the baby secure. Those pens just take up space and later on when you're baby is older they'll just scream whenever you put them in there. I think we used ours twice. If you have a crib, use that instead.
3.) a highchair... don't buy one yet. You won't need it for months and there are many other things you'll need to get right now. When you do get one, get one of the chairs that fits into the dining chairs you've already got... huge spacesaver, just as good!
4.) the door swing jumper thing... DANGEROUS! My son just kept hitting his head on the door frame. Avoid this!
5.) An activity mat. Those things are like $30. Know what works just as well? A blanket on the floor with some toys spread about... plus it seems to prompt baby to crawl sooner that way, or it did for us anyway.
6.) And lastly, a changing table is not a must. If you have one then that's okay. They're not bad, and later, when the baby is older you can use it as a stuffed animal shelf or something. But if you don't have one, don't stress. We've had one the whole time and honestly we changed him on our bed more than anything.

GOOD LUCK and congrats!!

How do you keep your infant from crying while shopping?

Tacymevol

I have an 11 month old infant who has a difficult time keeping entertained while I shop. The only way I can doing any shopping is if I know exactly what I want, purchase it, and then leave immediately. Whenever I need some time to browse, my 11 month old begins to fuss and eventually begins to cry. I've always fed and changed her before our outings so those reasons go out the window. Is there anyway that I can keep my daughter entertained better while I'm doing errands? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi
I totally feel your pain..... First remember this don't worry about those childless people (or even parents themselves) who'll give you dirty looks if you baby so much as cries while you are trying to shop.. They'll get over it and ig they donn't eventually they'll go somewhere else. Some people seem to think they were perfect angels when they were young (yeah right!)
Babies are going to cry... even if there is nothing wrong.
Babies cry to relieve stress too. Not just when they are hungry or need to be changed or tired.

Alot of time shopping in the morning not too long after the baby has gotten up and been fed. Not too close to nap time though : )

Sometime I bring cheerios and juice. Or I let them bring a toy... Once they get sick of that I give them my keys...
Also I saw another person mention letting them hold things that you put in your basket.... I do that too!

Have you tried those soft books? some of them have teething toys on them and some have different textures... like crinklly paper in them or something squeaky in them

If a pacifier works for you then go for it! I refused to give my kids a pacifier after 6 months old... it can hinder speech development. I see some mom's with 2 and 3 year olds that still have "binkies" and they think it's cute that the kid can talk even with the paci in their mouth.... Little do they know it's training the kid to talk like that... all garbled and such
But if it's the only thing that will work then it's up to you.

The only other thing I can think of is what I did when my daughter (I have 2 kids) was getting into the "difficult" stage
I just refused to take her with me..... If I ran out of milk.. too bad
We'd just have to wait for daddy to get home.. or I would just call him and have him get some on the way home.
Then when I had real grocery shopping to do... not just milk and eggs, I would have my husband take care of her while I shopped.

oh, I just remembered... do you have any musical toys? (what kinda question is that?) Or ones that have lights and stuff?
That always seemed to work for my 19 month old son.
He would be crying and just suddenly stop when he heard his toy. He would completely forget about WHY he was crying : )

Hope this helps!

What are some fun things to do with older infants (like 10 months) while your babysitting?

Im 13 years old and today i started babysitting this 8-9 month old baby. she got bored with her stuffed animals and toys so easily! what can i do to keep her entertained?

Answer
There are lots of things you can do to keep the baby entertained! For example, you can:

-read books to her and ask her questions about the book so she feels like she's participating
-sing songs to her
-put her in a stroller and go on walks together (if the weather permits)
-put on an educational television program for her
-play with stuffed animals and make animal noises to keep her excited and interested
-play music and dance around goofily
-play peek-a-boo

As long as you're creative with your resources, you can almost always keep the baby you're babysitting amused!

I would also recommend downloading the free app Recalls Plus. It allows you to keep track of foods and products that have been recalled, that way you can make sure that both you and the baby are consuming and using safe foods and products!

Recalls Plus

Can anyone give me some American based toy companies that are not linked with lead poisoning?

LilyBug

I have a 6 month old daughter and I am getting concerned with all the recalls in infant/toddler/children's toys. If you also have any great ideas about bottles and so forth. Much would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Melissa and Doug . . . . AWESOME toys that are made in America and can be found at Toys R Us. Their products are also high quality and usually wooden (as opposed to plastic). They also focus on educational value as opposed to TV character association.

Quote from their site:
"Additionally, we specifically test our paints and coatings very frequently, to be sure our toys meet or exceed government recommendations limiting heavy metals and lead in children’s items. We have cabinets full of thousands of passing test reports, and these passing results have been verified by 3rd party independently accredited testing laboratories, considered by many to be the best scientific laboratories in the world."

Any tips on plane traveling with an infant?

best infant toys for air travel
on ... Airplane Baby Comfort System - Air Travel with Baby Made Easy: Baby
best infant toys for air travel image

max's mamm

My 7 month old is preparing to fly to his uncles wedding in Key west. So we'll be on a puddle jumper too. I'd love to know any tricks on getting an extra seat or any savvy advice. I've heard about benedryl and would prefer not to use it. Any other must knows?

Answer
Using Benedryl on a child who doesn't need it is dangerous, all antihistamines and that is what Benedryl is has the potential to cause nerve damage, especially when used off label. It's a drug, again DRUG. Also drinking alcohol and then breast feeding is so harmful, so don't take that adivce I saw you'd already been given.

If you are relaxed your child will be more relaxed. Make sure he has nursed if you can or been bottle feed as close to your departing time, so he'll be satisfied that way. If he has three or four very small toys he really likes, the day before don't allow him to play with them if you can. Put them in your boarding bag for him, so he'll be happy to see them in flight.

If he eats anything yet, like Cheerio's, then save them for when he's getting tired on the plain, so it will be a treat, something to distract him.

Be patient and stop worrying about what others on the plane will think. You do your best for you and your son and don't drug him and risk harming him just so others won't be inconvenienced. Make sure to have him wear something he's comfortable in, not dress him up to go out. If fact putting him in comfortable jama's, so he'll feel comfortable would be wise. Also, using two peice Jama's so it's easy to change him in flight if you have to, makes doing so easier.

Make sure to have small things for him and don't bring them out until he begins to get bored.

If you are patient and calm yourself, are prepared to meet his needs, then you and him will be just fine.

If you bottle feed, contact the airlines you are traveling on about formula limits. Becuase for a while at least there were restrictions. I know a while back mothers literally had to pour out the formula, because of security issues that had come up. The story about while is too long for here. I think now you can take empty bottles on, a one leter bottle of water and powdered formula and ask the flight attendant to warm up the water for you. I think the water has to be purchased at the airport and still be sealed.

The restrictions may have been lifted, but so you don't run into problems at the airport and then end up with a hungry baby and nothing to feed him, CHECK with the air lines you are flying with to see restrictions that exist, because I know you can't take several bottles already filled with formula anymore as you once could.

Even if you take others advice and not let him sleep until just before the flight, it often doesn't work, because unless a baby or child is use to flying, it will be a new experience and as tired as they are they'll want to stay awake and look around. Then all you have is a tired active child, most likely a grumpy one. Let him keep to his sleep schedule as naturally as possible.

It's all just part of being a good mom, you do your best to be prepared to meet his in flight needs, then do you best wtih what comes up. That's what motherhood is.

Good luck and just enjoy the trip whatever comes your way and allow him to be unmediated and experience this new adventure as well.

Before going to the air port, for a day or two, he may be only seven months, but I've found that by talking about an upcoming new event, making it sound excisting even to little babies, seems to keep them happy when they are in the middle of a noisy new experience. If all the noise upsets him. In a calm and firm voice, just say, You are just fine. I find saying it firmly, with control and not getting upset myself, some how seems reassuring to little one's that can't talk yet.

You'll do fine!

Taking a Car Seat on the Plane?

kay l

How does that work. I'm planning a vacation and I want to take my child's carseat with me. Am I allowed to take it on the plane if it fits inside that small square. It's really small (infant seat).

If not how do you transport your child while on vacation (8 month old)? I also want to take her stroller but I don't want it to get smashed to bits with the airplane cargo. How does that work.

I'll be renting a car and I need at least a carseat!

Answer
If you're flying with a U.S. air company, you can take any FAA approved carseat with you onboard. If you bought a seat for your child, it's your right to use it. If you haven't, talk to them in check-in about seeing if there's a free seat they can put next to you if the flight isn't full. Be nice and diplomatic but it's in their interest to do so since it's better for the other passengers too to give whatever free seats available to those with little ones on their lap.

This link will show you what the FAA sticker looks like;
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

Check the car seat manual but many function without the base. No, it's not as convenient so you can decide if the inconvenience of packing the base is as bad as strapping the seat in each time. If it's a short visit, skipping on the base might be easier. But ONLY do this if it's an option the manufacturer mentions in the instructions.

Do you have a "Snap & Go" or can you put the carseat on the stroller? I'm hoping that's the case.
http://www.amazon.com/Snap-N-Go-Infant-Carrier/dp/B00008XL2W
I suggest not pfaffing with bringing both!

By the way, I am commending you for NOT using a rental car seat. I had a bad experience with one once and it's not recommended by car seat techs. Bravo for bringing your own. Your child is also safer in his or her own seat than in your lap but the "real" danger is more on the road than in the air, statistically speaking (commercial air travel is safe).

As far as the stroller goes, don't expect to take it onboard (hard to safely stow them, never in overhead bins please!) but the good news is that if you take it to the gate, it supposedly gets treated a little gentlier than if you check it in at the counter right away. They'll tag it but you get to keep it with you until you board the aircraft. At that moment, you fold it up and put it by the door of the plane, if using a jetway, or at the bottom of the stairs if boarding directly outside. It'll be boarded with the wheelchairs and other specially handled items.

This is the procedure for non-U.S. airlines too, just in case that's relevent to know.

Here are some tips to keeping it from being bashed;
1. Remove all "extras" (toys, cup holders, etc.)
2. Attach all straps so nothing dangles.
3. Consider bringing a bag for it, although this could interfere with the luggage tag. I actually skip this myself but I've never had a very expensive or delicate stroller.
4. A great tip someone else gave me was to bring an extra bungee cord and after it's folded up, double-secure it with the cord. That way, if it pops open en route, you wont be at the mercy of the "baggage monkeys" trying to figure out how to refold it and smashing it together.

I fly about every six months between Europe and California usually alone with my three children but I was also a long-haul international flight attendant for 10 years before I had them. I get a lot of questions on the subject so I wrote an article about 7 years ago, which I expanded and put on a blog. A lot of other parents have helped me out over the years adding to it and it's totally non-commercial.

I go into more details on feeding and changing in the airports and on the plane, etc. It's too long to copy and paste here but skim to the parts that apply to your situation.

My daughter is sitting now and it's so difficult to bathe her in the normal infant bath tub, can anyone pls suggest or recommend a brand / type with a seat .Thanks!

Answer
I have the Fischer Price aquarium bath tub for my son. He is now 8 months old and this tub transforms to fit a baby anywher from newborn to toddler. Once they are able to sit on there own you can just fill it up and sit them in there without the netting. When they are little you keep the net up and then you can have the net half on half off when they are a little older and then eventually they can just sit in there on their own. I like it bc it comes with toys, one is even attached to the tub so its always their for them to play with. Its small enough to fit in the tub or you can fill it and bathe them anywhere. It's convenient and not that expensive I believe we purchased ours at Target for about $30. Good luck!

What age did you move your kiddo from the baby bath to the real bath?

Rose Arizo

My 16-month old still uses the infant-toddler bath, and I like it because it contains him a little better, it's cleaner, and doesn't use as much water. He seems like he's getting a little cramped though, so I'm just wondering at what age others transfer to the big tub for baths.

Answer
This is a preference thing much more than anything else. As soon as you or he is ready, go for it! And at 16 months he can sit up, and should be walking so no fear of him sliding into the water readily. If he and you are ready switch, and if you're worried that he may not like it, let him splash more with the bubbles, maybe try a new boat toy. Something new that he can associate with switching to the bigger bath, to make it more fun and an easier switch.
Myself, I never used a baby bath, just the bath tub itself, I started out climbing in with my daughter and holding her while i bathed her and let her kick and splash and it became easier when she could sit up and play more. Then at a year we introduced the shower-head for more fun! And it's worked great, my daughter takes both baths and showers since the age of 3, now at 5 she cleans better than my husband some days :)
{Try the tub-stickers, the ones you put on the bottom of the shower to give more grib when you stand. They even come in cute fishy designs, so slipping is less of a worry as well. They should give you more confidence in letting him sit up and play in the big tub.}
Good luck!

Charged airfare for an infant under 2?

parent magazine best infant toys image

elleelle

It is my understanding that an infant under 2, if held in the lap, can fly free. As I am trying to book a flight I am finding that I am being charged a partial fare. Why is this?

Answer
You need to contact the airline and speak to a representative. All airlines are different and some will now start to charge a 10% fee for children flying under the age of two.

However, FAA regulations currently allow children under the age of two to fly free of charge as "lap children" (not required to have their own seat). The steward/stewardess should place you in a front seat where you will have more room. Most airlines will provide you with a special baby seat belt that hooks onto yours so your child can be buckled up as well. And depending on the airline and because of the length of flight, the steward/stewardess will give you a crib type thing that attaches to the front wall to put your child in (however you can not uses this during take-off and landing).

This is not the safest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children to have their own seat with a child safety device, but does not mandate it because of the cost to the parents.

A child safety device is an airline-approved alternative to using a hard-backed seat and is approved for use on aircraft and for use in motor vehicles. Many people confuse it with a regular car seat, which it is not.
http://faa.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/faa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=29&p_created=1071174367&p_sid=mn66D6wi&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NCZwX3Byb2RzPSZwX2NhdHM9MCZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWNoaWxk&p_li=&p_topview=1

This website talks about approved CRS devices and their ratings: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CPS/CSSRating/Index.cfm

Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. Parents should call their airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.

Ask your airline if they can provide a CRS for your child. If so, you may not be permitted to bring your own CRS on board, and may need to check it as baggage.
http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

Just another piece of advice, I know it wasn't in your question but it'll help:

For take-offs and landings, the best think you can do is if the baby is still nursing, make sure to nurse the baby. If the baby is not nursing, give him a bottle to drink (milk, water, juice - it doesn't matter) or a pacifier.

Baby formula is fine to take with you, and you are not limited to the amount you can bring aboard with you, do not worry.
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm

Another trick is that if the baby is not taking to the pacifier or wanting to drink or nurse, gently rub the neck of the baby from the chin down to the chest several times - this will cause a swallowing motion which will help with the ears popping.

Make sure to pack plenty of things to entertain your children. A few of their favorite toys, books, magazines, portable DVD player(s), iPod(s), cassette and/or CD player(s), hand held game consoles, and any comfort things such as a blankie. The Fa's will also provide you with a toy or coloring book for the children.

Pack a few instant hot/cold cereals, instant rice, and other just-add-water packets (age appropriate, of course). The stewards/stewardess' will provide you with hot or cold water upon request. Dried fruit also makes a great snack (and it's healthy!). You can also bring chips, and a few other non-perishable snack items. Drinks will be provided free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request.

I hope you have a great trip, and if I can be of any more assistance, please feel free to contact me.

what are the things you need to bring in the hospital for birth delivery?

xiao e

Answer
For Mommies:

Night gowns, preferably a nursing night gown for ease of breastfeeding. You can get such night gowns from Moms in Mind. If you are giving birth in KK Women's and Children's Hospital, they provide nursing night gown so you don't need to bring your own
warm socks, as it can get quite cold at night in the ward
1 extra pack of maternity pads (most hospital provide only one pack and will charge you if you get more)
disposable underwear
1 pair of slippers (if you are not wearing slippers/sandals to the hospital in the first place)
a set of clothes to go home in, and a nursing bra (just in case baby needs to feed on the way home)
breast pads
your personal toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, facewash, soap, shampoo, etc)
NO deodorant however, as this will musk your natural scent from your baby
breastfeeding pillow to assist you during breastfeeding, but I find it rather unnecessary as newborn are pretty light
inflatable ring or boppy pillow to ease episiotomy wound
nursing pillow to make positioning of babies easier especially if you have a c-section
a plastic bag for soiled clothing
light snacks, in case you get hungry at night. I did!
a journal and pen. You’d want to document your labor, write down your thoughts, experiences, and excitement before you forget them!
mobile phone and charger

On top of these, you may wish to pack in other stuff like books / magazines to read or an mp3 player to keep you company. Most hospitals give you welcome bags packed with parenting magazines and other useful reads, so it is really not necessary to bring more. Plus, you will be too busy marveling over your newborn, and recuperating at night, to have any time to read!

Also, remember that labor and delivery is a messyprocess. When packing a change of underclothes, do not pack your finest lace underwear, because you will likely ruin them from the voluminous lochia (bleeding) that occurs after birth.

Remember too that it is essential to have a goinghome outfit that is comfortable. You will not be your pre pregnancy size just after birth, and packing a pair of too tight jeans will only leave you excessively stressed and disheartened at a time when you should be reveling in the amazing feat your body just accomplished.

Finally, do not worry too much about forgettingto bring things (other than the important hospitalisation documents). Every hospital has a sundry shop. You can get things from the shop if you happened to have forgotten to bring them.

For Daddies:

Camera with plenty of megabyte space. Make sure your camera is fully charged!
Camcorder and batteries
Phone list to announce the birth of baby to one and all
Snacks on hand so the "labor coach" won't have to leave your bedside

For the Newborn Baby:

newborn clothing for going home, with a pair of scratch mittens
one receiving blanket to swaddle baby for the trip home
extra diapers (hospitals will provide one pack of diaper, so you can bring yours if you want)
infant formula if you intend to bottle-feed. I stronglyrecommend breastfeeding!

For Siblings:

favorite books and toys or drawing paper and crayons or markers to keep them occupied
snacks
a gift from Mom and Baby (to help ease jealousies after Baby arrives)
a camera just for big brother or sister to take pictures, and be involved in baby’s arrival!

Proud Momm

My son doesn't seem interested in the baby toys anymore... and the ones he does want tend to be for "older" kids... and a little above his comprehension.

Just curious about other two year old toy interests.

Answer
Both my son and my daughter LOVED playing with Duplos at the age of 2. Little Matchbox or Hotwheels kind of cars should be fine too by now because at age 2 they usually don't put too many toys into their mouth anymore, but if your son still regularly puts toys into his mouth, then pick bigger cars with big wheels and make sure there securely attached to the body of the car. Both my kids also liked playing with Thomas the Train kind of train at that age, but you still need to design (or at least help them design) the track because they don't know how to build a "closed" track yet. Later, he will learn to build it himself. Have him play with playdough, draw and paint as often as possible. You can also start teaching him how to hold kid friendly scissors and explain him how to open and shut it. At first, hold the piece of paper for him.

How soon after baby begins to pull up will he/she learn to walk?

and so it

I know all babies are different, I am just asking when your baby learned to walk or cruise (holding on to furniture) after he began to pull up on the crib or furniture.
Hold was he/she and did you do anything to help them walk?

Answer
my daughter started pulling up at 6 months, crawling at 7, 3-5 step cruising at 8, real cruising (walking behind toys, walking while holding on to one hand) at 9 months, she is 10 months now and will take 2-3 steps to get to the next "safe"place

The Feeling of Done

Sometimes, like an architect
where my write is the ribbon
on opening day;
sometimes just fully spent,
and my poem is the towel to
wipe my tears away!

Sometime, the fool drunkard
inebriated by this cocktail
penned to true love;
sometimes the wolfish glutton
who writes and writes but
never gets enough.

Sometimes a wee small infant
a strange format my newest toy to
learn to rattle;
and sometimes I am a warrior,
with cause shield and word sword brandished
well in battle!

At what age should infants be able to sit up on their own?

My son is 6 1/2 months old. He was a 5 week early preemie and had tons of problems keeping him in the hopsital until his due date. His development has been going fine. But he will not sit up on his own. My friends baby starting sitting up just before 6 months. I know better than to compare but I just wanted to get some other opinions. He grabs toys, rolls over, laughs, etc. He just doesn't sit up. Thanks for the advice!

Answer
All babies develop at their own rate, he just may take his sweet time sitting up. Your right about the comparing part, I think that makes every woman worry about their child.
He will eventually get it, if your worried about it speak to his doctor about it.

what is Piagetian process or concept. and what is the child’s most likely stage of development in this example?

Andrew J

Example: Fourteen-month-old Henry tries to move the blanket to find the toy that his mother hid beneath it.

Answer
Piaget's 'Four levels of development' are (1) infancy, (2) preschool, (3) childhood, and (4) adolescence. Each stage is characterized by a general cognitive structure that affects all of the child's thinking (a structuralist view influenced by philosopher Immanuel Kant)[citation needed]. Each stage represents the child's understanding of reality during that period, and each but the last is an inadequate approximation of reality. Development from one stage to the next is thus caused by the accumulation of errors in the child's understanding of the environment; this accumulation eventually causes such a degree of cognitive disequilibrium that thought structures require reorganizing.

The four development stages are described in Piaget's theory as:

Sensorimotor stage: from birth to age 2. Children experience the world through movement and senses (use five senses to explore the world). During the sensorimotor stage children are extremely egocentric, meaning they cannot perceive the world from others viewpoints and explore using senses. The sensorimotor stage is divided into six substages: "(1) simple reflexes; (2) first habits and primary circular reactions; (3) secondary circular reactions; (4) coordination of secondary circular reactions; (5) tertiary circular reactions, novelty, and curiosity; and (6) internalization of schemes." [4] Simple reflexes is from birth to 1 month old. At this time infants use reflexes such as rooting and sucking. First habits and primary circular reactions is from 1 month to 4 months old. During this time infants learn to coordinate sensation and two types of scheme (habit and circular reactions). A primary circular reaction is when the infant tries to reproduce an event that happened by accident (ex: sucking thumb). The third stage, secondary circular reactions, occurs when the infant is 4 to 8 months old. At this time they become aware of things beyond their own body; they are more object oriented. At this time they might accidentally shake a rattle and continue to do it for sake of satisfaction. Coordination of secondary circular reactions is from 8 months to 12 months old. During this stage they can do things intentionally. They can now combine and recombine schemes and try to reach a goal (ex: use a stick to reach something). They also understand object permanence during this stage. That is, they understand that objects continue to exist even when they can't see them. The fifth stage occurs from 12 months old to 18 months old. During this stage infants explore new possibilities of objects; they try different things to get different results. During the last stage they are 18 to 24 months old. During this stage they shift to symbolic thinking. [4]
Preoperational stage: from ages 2 to 5 (magical thinking predominates. Acquisition of motor skills) Egocentricism begins strongly and then weakens. Children cannot conserve or use logical thinking.
Concrete operational stage: from ages 5 to 11 (children begin to think logically but are very concrete in their thinking) Children can now conserve and think logically but only with practical aids. They are no longer egocentric.
Formal operational stage: after age 11 (development of abstract reasoning). Children develop abstract thought and can easily conserve and think logically in their mind.

Any suggestions for good toys for young babies?

Q. I'm a first-time mom and my three month old daughter is just starting to swat at toys on her playmat. We didn't stock up on any toys before she was born because we knew we wouldn't need them right away so now I'd like to get some for her. Also, we're planning on getting an exersaucer in the near future when she can hold herself up a little bit better. Any suggestions including name brands? Thanks for your help!

Answer
My baby is 4 months, and he's just now getting big enough for his Rainforest Jumperoo. The activity mat kept him pretty busy for the first couple of months... there's not much they can do except swat things on the activity mat and watch the mobile on the crib at that age. You might buy more toys for the activity mat (I bought the Tiny Love windchimes for my baby to kick, he loves those). Also, board books (like Goodnight Moon) are great. Until they are older, babies really need to interact with their parents, so just pointing things out and talking to her about them is enough entertainment.

By the way, I saw someone suggested the Baby Einstein videos... I would not suggest those. Research has shown that they actually delay language development. http://uwnews.org/article.asp?articleid=35898
"Despite marketing claims, parents who want to give their infants a boost in learning language probably should limit the amount of time they expose their children to DVDs and videos such as "Baby Einstein" and "Brainy Baby."

Rather than helping babies, the over-use of such productions actually may slow down infants eight to 16 months of age when it comes to acquiring vocabulary, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Washington and Seattle Children's Hospital Research Institute.

The scientists found that for every hour per day spent watching baby DVDs and videos, infants understood an average of six to eight fewer words than infants who did not watch them."

How do you become a nanny?

ZeeLizardG

My teacher for Infant Development was observing me when we took a trip to a preschool. She noticed how I interacted with the children, kept everything neat and orderly, and adhered strictly to the schedule and told me I would make a good nanny, which got me wondering: what exactly does it take to become one?

Answer
Go to care.com and Sittercity.com
Fill out a profile for each site. Be honest and fill it out the best you can in detail.
Then you can search for a family near where you live and families can search for you.

Most families want a person with experience, mature, on time, clean, will help with house work, taking kids to activities, someone that will teach there kids, do crafts, stick with there schedule and rules, take kids to the park, fix the kids there meals, doing activities at home(toys, puzzles, games, outside play), most ive worked for dont want kids in front of the tv all day(i allow 40 min a day and on occasions we have a movie day, just one movie),etc... Pretty much what a mom would do.

Why did I get a thumbs down?

Is it safe for a 6 month old to fly 18 hours?

Im planning a trip to S. Korea to see my husband, hes in the Air Force, and we want our 6 month old daughter to come with me. Has anyone flown for that length of time with an infant? How did they do? Any tips/tricks i should know about for keeping her quite? And how did the child do during take off/landing??

Answer
Safe absolutely. I flew with my 1 month old last month across the US (from origin to destination about 9 hours including layovers). Most of the newer planes have better pressurization than the old ones, so I had no problems with take off/landing and ears. He actually ate just before take off, and slept for most of the flight. I did have both a bottle and a pacifier ready in case his ears bothered him.

If any of the airline or airport officials offer help, say yes. The hardest part for me was actually security, but a TSA official helped me carry my bins to a bench so I could carry the baby. Also, at the bench, I was able to lay my baby on a blanket in the bin which kept him safe and confined while I put my shoes on, put my laptop back, put my liquids back, etc. I also had a flight attendant offer to put my bags in the overhead bin. I was also able to board early which helped me get the baby situated without feeling the pressure of other people trying to board. However, if you have a wiggly baby who hates to be confined, board last so you can confine them at the last possible minute.

I requested an aisle seat so I could move up and down the aisle, and stand up when necessary. Definitely take your car seat - check with the airline and compare just buying a full fare discount seat vs. a discounted with the airline infant seat price. Sometimes, you'll find it cheaper to buy the seat online. If your plane has the 2 seat only on the side- take it. You have to put the car seat against the window.

You know your child. If she is wiggly or likes to move around, plan on spending any gate time moving around, and letting her down to stretch. I am a baby wearer, so I was able to wear my baby in the airport with no problems, and on the plane. When I fly with him again, I will buy a seat to give him his own space.

With toys, the more you can secure them (think of the toys that attach to car seats) the less time you will spend diving under seats, and asking neighbors if you can have them back. Also, only bring out one or two toys at a time, putting them away before you bring out a new one. That way, baby will think they are new each time and you can get away with only 6 - 8 rather than a ton.

Be patient, and be calm. If you are trying to calm your crying baby, then other passengers tend to be nicer. My baby falls asleep in the car, and the plane was the same motion for him so he slept for the entire flight, only waking for food. It was the following day that was harder for me with the baby and the time zones. On the way back because I flew red eye, baby had no time zone adjustment problems.
