I would not give a webkinz as a baby shower gift. First, a baby could choke on some of the smaller parts, eyes, nose, ribbons, etc. Plus in another 6 or 7 years when the baby is old enough to play on a computer, webkinz world might not even be there. I hope it will still be there, but you never know.
How about getting some t-shirts, onesies, or pajamas that are a bit bigger than newborn, like the 6-9 month size? That way when the baby outgrows all the infant clothes everyone else will give the mom, there will still be new clothes that will fit!

Is there anything I need more of? Less of? Missing? (This is just a clothing / diaper list for the first year, not lotions, car seats toys etc). I need to try to buy everything for the first year before they are born for financial and other reasons (such as baby shower gifts). This is for twins, so 2 babies, likely born weighing 5 pounds each.
Hmmm I heard you need lots of extra outfits when they are under 6 months because they spit up and drool a lot? I think this is why my mom says I need bibs. I thought the coat might get dirty when they crawl around at the playground and I might need a spare while it is washing?

We do have a washer and dryer, but I am hoping to get away with only doing laundry twice a week. If I can't then I can't, but that is what I am trying to aim for. ;)
Really want to try to get as much as possible now, but if I stick to layering I can use things out of season. For instance short sleeved onsies, a regular sleeper and a coat over them during winter? I am concerned about them being in the wrong season, but here in the south most days are warm and winter is 3 months long. If I have to go out and get smaller /larger coats I can do that. But for instance today I bought 50 outfits for $36 at a fantastic yard sale, including a 6-12 month coat for $0.75.
For seasons I am trying to estimate by their due date, not their actual birthdays,so hopefully they will be close to the right size. As long as the clothes are not completely unwearable for the season, they will be able to wear them at some point! ;)

My girls were 5lbs and 5lbs7oz at birth. I think we were in newborn diapers for 2 months, about a box a week. They were the big boxes you get at Toys R Us of Pampers. We go through a box of 88 (size 4) a week now at 12 months. The first year, most of our clothes were given to us from his mom and my parents. I would not buy your coats in advance. You will not know how much they will grow in the first year to know what size to get them. I always get coats bigger than their size because of putting clothes on under them. Their coats and winter pants for this year are 24 months, because I will have to pile a onsie and a sweater on under it. They can still wear some 6 to 9 months clothing in pants. Shirts it almost has to be 18 months at this point, the few 12 months shirts they have are getting too small. The one thing it seems like we still run out of is onsies, and then socks. Also shoes are funny about sizes. I don't get new shoes for them until they are about to outgrow them. I have 3's that are still too big for them and 4's that are almost too small. According to sizing charts they should be in 4 for their age.

My suggestion is instead of getting everything for the year is get what you need for right now, put the other money away in a savings account and then sell the clothes that look good after they outgrow them on either craigslist or once-upon-a-child and use that money to get their new clothes as you need them.

Edit: I know you don't want to do laundry every day, or even every other day. I do a load every other day, but that is for a family of 7, we also have three boys 14, 14, and 6. You will be surprised how much goes unworn even when you layer them and I didn't have nearly that much. But I am also running out of storage, his mom will see things at the thrift stores and pick them up so I have a bin of 2t, a bin of 3t, and still need to weed out clothes I kept thinking they could wear them this winter and can't.

First do not register for any cute clothes. That is what most people will buy you so why register and get more outfits than you will know what to do with.

some toys
infant tub
hooded towels
washclothes
baby bath soap- johnsons or aveeno - I love aveeno

stroller and carseat- put down for an extra base if you have more than one car
blankets- i got tons of these but you never know if you will get a lot or not

Two months pregnant, and 14. What all will I need for my baby?

So hey, I'm 2 months pregnant and 14. Before guys go AWOL on my pregnant at 14... It was an accident and I have his family, and my family backing us up. Also we both have jobs (I work at once upon a child, he works at American eagle.) I was wondering what everything I need for this baby. Diapers, wipes, stuff like that. Also what brands are best and how many I should get! Also any other tips would be 100% grateful! Thank you!

You could use cloth diapers and cloth wipes, it will save you a bunch of money and you wont be destroying the environment.

but what do you NEED?

carseat
a few newborn cloths (don't go ballistic buying newborn cloths... they grow really fast)
a few 0-3 months (also fast)
some 6-9 month clothing
then 9-12 month clothing and you're good!
crib. even if you will be co-sleeping I still would get a crib for nap time.
baby blankets
socks and hats!
personally... I would get pacifiers they reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome)
I would also get a bouncer, you don't NEED it, but I find when I need to take a fast shower or get something to eat it helps a lot!
baby shampoo and bath wash (I prefer Johnston & Johnston but parents choice is also good)

and I am amusing you will go back to work after your baby arrives? you will need a good breast pump (get a double electric one, and then talk to a lactation consultant) And then also get bottles, and breast milk freezer bags (I prefer gerber... lashion sucks!) get nipple cream.
also I would get some "mothers milk tea" it helps promote healthy lactation, it makes me really engorged! and I am able to pump more after I was done feeding my son.

you don't need toys till around 3 months and even then you don't need many (rattles)
and don't buy baby shoes. Yes they are cute but it can deform their feet growth and they don't even need them still after the age of 12 months.

Total cost estimate for baby's first year?

So I'm 16 and pregnant. My due date is January 28th, 2014. My boyfriend and I are gonna take full responsibility for this baby and pay for everything he/she needs without relying on our parents or taking any government assistance. We'd like to see if anyone has a rough estimate on how much our baby will cost us for the first year? We understand we'll have to provide for him/her throughout their whole childhood, but for now we're wondering around how much it will cost for the first year. I have insurance through Tricare since my father is in the army, so all of our hospital fees are covered by that, including the birth. I am planning on breast feeding and using a breast pump which is also free with insurance, so we won't be needing to pay for formula either. I know eventually I'll have to total it up myself and I know it all depends on what brands of baby products we buy, but for now it'd be nice to have a rough estimate of how much it'll cost us. Include diapers & wipes (I know that's gonna be a lot! haha), clothing, baby food, the nursery set (crib, changing table, etc.), car seat and stroller, toys, baby care items (such as a baby tub, lotion, shampoo, etc.), and any additional items the baby will need. Thank you so much!!
@bby: Yes, we're getting a breast pump for free through my insurance. We aren't formula feeding.
Also, is that estimate with or without hospital and birthing fees? We won't have to pay for those because I have Tricare insurance free since my dad is in the army.

Sorry but the person above is so beyond wrong. Having a baby is no where near that cheap. $300 for diapers for a whole year? That's only $25 a month. One box of the cheapest diapers is $32 and you only get about 260 in them which isn't enough for a whole month. All of her calculations are so so wrong. she didn't even include wipes? A baby doesn't have to be super crazy expensive like $20,000, but no way in hell is it less than $2,000 a year.

Buying the cheapest diapers and wipes, its probably about $75 a month. That alone is $900.

You'll need clothes for a whole year, so newborn, 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12. If you buy used like off of Craigslist, you could probably get by with $50 for newborn (they arent in them long) and $100 for each clothes size, so that's a total of $450.

You'll need Bibs ($75), burp rags ($100), towels ($200), and wash clothes. ($75) so $450

Shampoo, body wash, lotion, You'll probably need about 20 bottles of each for the whole year, so $180

With those things alone its $2,000. That's not even close to half the things you'll need.

I didn't even get into a crib, changing table, dresser, Bassinet, pack n play, swing, bouncer, stroller, infant car seat, baby car seat (yes they're different and you'll need both) high chair, exersaucer, ect. All of which is safe to say another $1,500 if bought cheapest possible.

There's also all the little things like bottles, nuks, diaper rash cream, bedding, blankets, toys, baby monitor, diaper genie, baby bath, sunscreen, baby grooming kit, ect. For a whole year I'd say at least $500

Breast feeding isn't free either. You'll need breast milk storage bags, breast pads, nipple cream, breast feeding cover ups, nursing bras, a nipple shield, special bottles for the breast pump. Easily another $1,000 breast feeding things are way more expensive than you'd think. You'll probably spend $600 alone on storage bags and breast pads.

There's so much more you need I didn't even come close to adding in here. Id say if you buy used and the cheapest stuff possible $7,000-$8,000 is a good estimate. If you buy new things, I'd say about $10,000-$12,000.

Boys are easily entertained, make sure you get down to their level. You're young so it shouldn't be too hard. They have a lot of energy, make a game out of picking things up. Get involved (if the baby is not awake or needs attention) and play with them and their toys, ask them what they like to do, be interested in their rooms, toys and interest. As for the baby, that one is easier than the boys. Baby might sleep most of the time but just keep a visual on the baby at all times. Good luck!

Well if you don't want to spend too much money then don't order online because you'll have to pay for shipping and it may take some tme to arrive anyways. Its better to go to a store and not spend on shipping - even if you just go to Toys R Us or Walmart you can probably still find something cute. You could do a cute blanket or a stuffed animal - those are kind of the standby gifts for infants. The lamaze stuffed animals are really awesome - they're kinda different and unique and are really good for the baby's development because they have lots of bright colours, things to pull and chew on, sounds, etc all attached to the animal. Clothes is a bit more boring, but almost always needed. If you get clothes, buy a bigger size like 6-9 months because usually people will get a ton of infant sized clothing but then not have alot for when the baby gets older/bigger.

Those handprint kits are really adorable too, although that's more of a keepsake type gift for the parent than anything for the baby. It's like a kit with clay that they imprint the baby's handprints on and comes with a nice metal display frame - I see them at Hallmark and other gift stores all the time.

How do I get custody of my God daughter?

I'm 18 yrs old and my 13yr old cousin (Harley) just had a baby(Melissa).In which I am the godmother of. The baby was born on the 10th of Feb and she is a premie. Well the home (trailer) that Harley and Melissa live in is horriable it's almost impossiable to live in. 5 people in a 2 bedroom. To make a long story short. Harley is being neglected(spelled wrong). Her gardian refuses to help. Everything that melissa has, was bought for her from my family Also stuff from Wic.No one wants to help her out because all that everyone cares about is are their drugs and booze. Harley is young yet mature, she stays very stressed out. I help as much as I can. I just don't understand how blood can turn down this 13 yr old child and refuse to help her. Yes she shouldn't even be having sex but I respect her for keeping her baby. How do I get Harley and Melissa to live with me. I dont want it to get ugly. What are the TN laws? (Im from Illinois) Im just stressed and hurt about the whole situation.

There are a few very important factors to consider here, some of which have already been mentioned.

First of all, you need to ask yourself a few questions....

Are you, at 18 years old, mature enough to become a parent to a teenager and an infant? You do realize that's what you'd be doing, right? Not just becoming a parent to the baby, but to it's mother as well. Melissa is not old enough to be a parent, she still needs one!
Do you make enough money to adequately support a 13 year old and an infant and yourself? Please realize that, in giving you custody of these two children, the state would want them EACH to have a bedroom. Can you afford a 3 bedroom house/apartment? Can you afford to feed and clothe them? Does your work schedule permit for being home to help the teen with her homework? Can you afford diapers and wipes and diaper cream and baby wash and toys? Will you be able to pay the electric bill without struggling? The 13 year old is still too young to have the option of quitting school early....Can you afford day care while she is attending school? Do you have a car, and the ability to put gas in it to drive them both to doctors' appointments and such? The teen is too young to sign legal papers pertaining to her baby's care, such as those required for vaccinations at the doctor's office, so you will need to take the baby to those appointments....Does your job permit the ability to take that time off, every month? Vaccinations are given at 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 24 months, just to start out with. You'll need that day off every other month at least, not to mention when the baby is sick, you'll be the one taking her to the doctor. Are you going to lose your job when you start taking all these days off? What's the call-in policy at your job? Babies don't give notice when they're going to get sick. In addition, do you plan to have the extra money lying around for emergencies, such as Infant Tylenol, Cold medicines, prescriptions that the insurance doesn't cover? Also, can you properly care for an infant? Do you know how to use a nasal aspirator? Do you have a humidifier? Is the house baby-proofed? Do you have a crib? A stroller? I am assuming the mother already has a car seat.....

There are LOTS of things to consider.

Now, on to the legal aspects.....The first step in removing a child, or children, from an improper home, is to prove that their guardians are unfit. This means you have to prove to a court, or the Department of Children and Families, that the child is being harmed, or is in a possibly harmful situation, is being abused, or neglected. If any of these are the situation, you can make an anonymous report, or leave your name, with DCS/DSS/DCF, and they will investigate. If they agree that Melissa and Harley are being harmed or neglected, they will remove them from the home.

Here's the hard part, they probably aren't going to give them to you. They will be placed in foster care, most likely together, but there is a possibility that Harley will be taken from Melissa, because very few foster families are willing to take teen moms and their babies. Then you would have to petition for custody, but be aware that the court will give Melissa's guardians adequate time to get custody of her again. They will re-investigate the matter every 30-90 days and if the parents clean up their act, the kids go back to them. In the mean time, they may allow the girls to live with you, but you have to be aware that around 50% of children eventually go back to their biological guardians.

Your parents, if they are willing, would have better luck getting custody of Melissa and Harley. Most courts will not, simply WILL NOT, give an 18 year old custody of ONE child, much less two. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it just doesn't happen, and especially not in Tennessee where people would rather glance the other way than admit a problem. You really need someone older, with a more stable home, to get custody of the girls, and then if that person wants to let them live with you, Great!

The other option you have is to request, from Melissa's parents, that perhaps she and the baby would be more comfortable living with you. If they truly don't care about her or the infant, they may just let her go, especially since you're a cousin. I'd try that first, before you go forth with any legal activity.

I'm going to Philippines this September 2008 with my 6-9 month old baby. What to pack? What to expect?

My son will be 9 month old by September. What is there for me to be aware and cautious of in Philippines with my son with me? What will i expect? What should i bring? What to have at all times? What should i be prepared of? What was your experience?

-while traveling, make sure you have enough bottles, water, diapers, wipes, etc. ready for him. you can also bring toys to keep him busy if he's awake or something.
-car seats are not very common in the philippines so you will have to hold him while in the car (it's scary i know) or you can bring his own car seat (just to be on the safe side).
-bring water for your baby cuz most filipinos drink tap water. or you can just buy water for him there.
-if you're staying in a hotel, mosquitos won't probably become a problem for you. if you're staying in somebody else's house, ask them if you could borrow their mosquito net or "kulambo" in tagalog.
-its also very hot and humid there so bring lots of sleeveless or shortsleeve clothes for him. you can also buy lots of cheap clothes there if you want.

it's really hard to travel with an infant with you. sometimes it's hard to put them to sleep in the plane. you might want someone to go with you so she could help you while you're traveling.

Total cost estimate for baby's first year?

So I'm 16 and pregnant. My due date is January 28th, 2014. My boyfriend and I are gonna take full responsibility for this baby and pay for everything he/she needs without relying on our parents or taking any government assistance. We'd like to see if anyone has a rough estimate on how much our baby will cost us for the first year? We understand we'll have to provide for him/her throughout their whole childhood, but for now we're wondering around how much it will cost for the first year. I have insurance through Tricare since my father is in the army, so all of our hospital fees are covered by that, including the birth. I am planning on breast feeding and using a breast pump which is also free with insurance, so we won't be needing to pay for formula either. I know eventually I'll have to total it up myself and I know it all depends on what brands of baby products we buy, but for now it'd be nice to have a rough estimate of how much it'll cost us. Include diapers & wipes (I know that's gonna be a lot! haha), clothing, baby food, the nursery set (crib, changing table, etc.), car seat and stroller, toys, baby care items (such as a baby tub, lotion, shampoo, etc.), and any additional items the baby will need. Thank you so much!!
@bby: Yes, we're getting a breast pump for free through my insurance. We aren't formula feeding.
Also, is that estimate with or without hospital and birthing fees? We won't have to pay for those because I have Tricare insurance free since my dad is in the army.

Sorry but the person above is so beyond wrong. Having a baby is no where near that cheap. $300 for diapers for a whole year? That's only $25 a month. One box of the cheapest diapers is $32 and you only get about 260 in them which isn't enough for a whole month. All of her calculations are so so wrong. she didn't even include wipes? A baby doesn't have to be super crazy expensive like $20,000, but no way in hell is it less than $2,000 a year.

Buying the cheapest diapers and wipes, its probably about $75 a month. That alone is $900.

You'll need clothes for a whole year, so newborn, 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12. If you buy used like off of Craigslist, you could probably get by with $50 for newborn (they arent in them long) and $100 for each clothes size, so that's a total of $450.

You'll need Bibs ($75), burp rags ($100), towels ($200), and wash clothes. ($75) so $450

Shampoo, body wash, lotion, You'll probably need about 20 bottles of each for the whole year, so $180

With those things alone its $2,000. That's not even close to half the things you'll need.

I didn't even get into a crib, changing table, dresser, Bassinet, pack n play, swing, bouncer, stroller, infant car seat, baby car seat (yes they're different and you'll need both) high chair, exersaucer, ect. All of which is safe to say another $1,500 if bought cheapest possible.

There's also all the little things like bottles, nuks, diaper rash cream, bedding, blankets, toys, baby monitor, diaper genie, baby bath, sunscreen, baby grooming kit, ect. For a whole year I'd say at least $500

Breast feeding isn't free either. You'll need breast milk storage bags, breast pads, nipple cream, breast feeding cover ups, nursing bras, a nipple shield, special bottles for the breast pump. Easily another $1,000 breast feeding things are way more expensive than you'd think. You'll probably spend $600 alone on storage bags and breast pads.

There's so much more you need I didn't even come close to adding in here. Id say if you buy used and the cheapest stuff possible $7,000-$8,000 is a good estimate. If you buy new things, I'd say about $10,000-$12,000.

Where are the cheapest places to by baby supplies?

Q. My friend is having a baby shower for her son who is due sometime in 3-4 months. Im not sure. Im on a budget but want to make her a nice basket. I plan on diapers and some onesies and some other small things. I know she is looking for jake footie pajamas and has dc shoes on her wish list. I dont know if I can get her all that but I do want to know the cheapest places to find baby items. We have a walmart and a dollar store ao it may need to be online. If anyone else has any ideas for a basket let me know. I am not sure yet whether she will be using breast or bottle. Should I get some bibs or a blanket?

Um, does DC Shoes even make sizes for infants? I wouldn't get her name brand stuff as the baby will outgrow it quickly. I don't know about the Jake footie pajamas either.

Amazon and Wal-mart has some cheap shipping options too.

I would consider getting her the onesies packs that Wal-mart sells. I would throw in some teethers (a set of 3 is cheap). A glowhorse or a glow-worm in the toy section of Wal-mart is a good buy because every baby I've seen loves them. I would consider a package of regular cloth diapers for burping. Bibs I'd hold off on. Receiving blankets maybe but those big plush ones aren't actually recommended till the child is out of the SIDS range. I would consider a sleeper gown. Baby shampoo and wash clothes are good for baskets.

Any clothes you get, I'd recommend buying in the 3-6 or 6-9 months range. A lot of people will buy clothes in the 0-3 range or newborn so that way the baby has stuff to grow into.

Is there anything I need more of? Less of? Missing? (This is just a clothing / diaper list for the first year, not lotions, car seats toys etc). Also I didn't put bibs on my list, but my mom says I should? If so how many and what size? I will be breastfeeding and using the wrong sized diapers as burp cloths.
I need to try to buy everything for the first year before they are born for financial and other reasons (such as baby shower gifts). This is for twins, so 2 babies, likely born weighing 5 pounds each.
Hmmm I heard you need lots of extra outfits when they are under 6 months because they spit up and drool a lot? I think this is why my mom says I need bibs. I thought the coat might get dirty when they crawl around at the playground and I might need a spare while it is washing?

We do have a washer and dryer, but I am hoping to get away with only doing laundry twice a week. If I can't then I can't, but that is what I am trying to aim for. ;)
Really want to try to get as much as possible now, but if I stick to layering I can use things out of season. For instance short sleeved onsies, a regular sleeper and a coat over them during winter? I am concerned about them being in the wrong season, but here in the south most days are warm and winter is 3 months long. If I have to go out and get smaller /larger coats I can do that. But for instance today I bought 50 outfits for $36 at a fantastic yard sale, including a 6-12 month coat for $0.75.
For seasons I am trying to estimate by their due date, not their actual birthdays,so hopefully they will be close to the right size. As long as the clothes are not completely unwearable for the season, they will be able to wear them at some point! ;)

My girls were 5lbs and 5lbs7oz at birth. I think we were in newborn diapers for 2 months, about a box a week. They were the big boxes you get at Toys R Us of Pampers. We go through a box of 88 (size 4) a week now at 12 months. The first year, most of our clothes were given to us from his mom and my parents. I would not buy your coats in advance. You will not know how much they will grow in the first year to know what size to get them. I always get coats bigger than their size because of putting clothes on under them. Their coats and winter pants for this year are 24 months, because I will have to pile a onsie and a sweater on under it. They can still wear some 6 to 9 months clothing in pants. Shirts it almost has to be 18 months at this point, the few 12 months shirts they have are getting too small. The one thing it seems like we still run out of is onsies, and then socks. Also shoes are funny about sizes. I don't get new shoes for them until they are about to outgrow them. I have 3's that are still too big for them and 4's that are almost too small. According to sizing charts they should be in 4 for their age.

My suggestion is instead of getting everything for the year is get what you need for right now, put the other money away in a savings account and then sell the clothes that look good after they outgrow them on either craigslist or once-upon-a-child and use that money to get their new clothes as you need them.

Edit: I know you don't want to do laundry every day, or even every other day. I do a load every other day, but that is for a family of 7, we also have three boys 14, 14, and 6. You will be surprised how much goes unworn even when you layer them and I didn't have nearly that much. But I am also running out of storage, his mom will see things at the thrift stores and pick them up so I have a bin of 2t, a bin of 3t, and still need to weed out clothes I kept thinking they could wear them this winter and can't.

Boys are easily entertained, make sure you get down to their level. You're young so it shouldn't be too hard. They have a lot of energy, make a game out of picking things up. Get involved (if the baby is not awake or needs attention) and play with them and their toys, ask them what they like to do, be interested in their rooms, toys and interest. As for the baby, that one is easier than the boys. Baby might sleep most of the time but just keep a visual on the baby at all times. Good luck!

She was born 13 wks early is now 10 1/2 wks old and tonight she won't eat. When a baby begins teething, there is no set pattern on when it will begin, how long it will take and how painful it will be. For one baby cutting a tooth might happen overnight without pain, while another child might have to go through a long, drawn out and painful experience.
You may sometimes visibly see a rise or lump in the gum for several weeks, while sometimes there may be no visible clue at all until the tooth actually appears.The process of teething often follows hereditary patterns, so if the mother and father teethed early or late, your baby may follow the same pattern. On average the first tooth comes in during the seventh month, although it can arrive as early as three months, as late as a year, or in rare cases even earlier or later.
There are several things that you can try to help ease the pain of teething; some work and some donât, but most parents agree theyâre always worth a try. Teething rings, water filled and chilled rubber teething toys; mom and dads fingers can all provide counter pressure that can sometimes bring relief. Offering your baby a cold bottle of water can also help. If sucking on the bottle bothers your child, offer a cold cup of water. The water can also help replenish your babyâs fluid if theyâre drooling a lot or have loose bowel movements.
Cold food has also been found to be helpful by some parents. Chilled applesauce, yogurt and pureed peaches may be more appealing to your baby and also more nutritious than a chilled teething ring.

How about getting some t-shirts, onesies, or pajamas that are a bit bigger than newborn, like the 6-9 month size? That way when the baby outgrows all the infant clothes everyone else will give the mom, there will still be new clothes that will fit!

Q. My son will be 9 month old by September. What is there for me to be aware and cautious of in Philippines with my son with me? What will i expect? What should i bring? What to have at all times? What should i be prepared of? What was your experience?

A. -while traveling, make sure you have enough bottles, water, diapers, wipes, etc. ready for him. you can also bring toys to keep him busy if he's awake or something.
-car seats are not very common in the philippines so you will have to hold him while in the car (it's scary i know) or you can bring his own car seat (just to be on the safe side).
-bring water for your baby cuz most filipinos drink tap water. or you can just buy water for him there.
-if you're staying in a hotel, mosquitos won't probably become a problem for you. if you're staying in somebody else's house, ask them if you could borrow their mosquito net or "kulambo" in tagalog.
-its also very hot and humid there so bring lots of sleeveless or shortsleeve clothes for him. you can also buy lots of cheap clothes there if you want.

it's really hard to travel with an infant with you. sometimes it's hard to put them to sleep in the plane. you might want someone to go with you so she could help you while you're traveling.
