I am a proud new mother of a beautiful baby boy, and I am looking to purchase sencond hand toys at a very good price.

I've looked at e-bay but after shipping there is not much of a discount from store prices.

Any suggestions??

Anything online is going to have similar shipping cost. the best bet is to go look at second hand infant clothing stores. Try the yellow pages (or 411.com).
We have one in out town that lets us sell the cloths our children outgrew. We put them on consignment. As they sold, we got half of what they sold for, and we always spent it at the store purchasing more age appropriate toys and cloths that fit them.

Safe toys for X-Mas?

I was wondering if anyone knows of any safe toys for boys 5-7 yrs old and girls infant to toddler ages. There are so many recalls that I am unsure what I can get them without having to worry about their safety. Anyone's children really enjoying a certain type of toy?

We have one in out town that lets us sell the cloths our children outgrew. We put them on consignment. As they sold, we got half of what they sold for, and we always spent it at the store purchasing more age appropriate toys and cloths that fit them.

How did your baby sleep?

It is very important that infants sleep on their back, with no extra pillows, blankets, toys, etc in the crib with them. Swaddle him or tuck a blanket around him to keep him warm, and have him sleep on his back. This is important until 1 year of age, as it has been shown to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by up to 50%. After that, go by what is most comfortable for your baby. But always think of safety- once your baby can roll over, he can roll off of a crib or changing table. Once he can stand, he could tip over a low crib rail. Here is a full list of tips from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia:

Place your baby on his/her back on a firm, tight-fitting mattress in a crib that meets current safety standards.
Remove pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, stuffed toys, and other soft products from the crib.
Consider using a sleeper as an alternative to blankets with no other covering.
If using a blanket, put your baby with his/her feet at the foot of the crib. Tuck a thin blanket around the crib mattress, only as far as the baby's chest.
Make sure your baby's head remains uncovered during sleep.
Do not place your baby on a waterbed, sofa, soft mattress, pillow, or other soft surface to sleep.

Infant ear piercing: What is wrong with these people who call themselves parents?

A baby is a baby not a fashion accesory. Permanent Body mutilation should be the choice of whoever is getting it. I think that parents do have a right to not allow their kid to do it to themselves, because the kid can when they grow up, but they have no right to do it to their kid before they are old enough to decide for themself. I have an arguement against a few of the biggest reasons why a parent would do this to their kid. First, they say it's cute. I think it looks tacky, but for those who do think it is cute, so are hairbows, a lot of baby outfits, and babies in general. Also, see reason above about it being the kid's choice. Second, they say it ends the problem of gender confusion. A simpler, pain free trick even more visible is putting a little girl in pink, boy in blue. Finally, they say it spares the kid the pain of remembering. If the kid doesn't want it and doesn't wear earrings, the holes are still visible. If they want it when they are older, they can if they are allowed.
I was running out of characters for the last reason, so here's what I meant. I had my ears pierced in kindergarten, I wanted to, in case you are wondering. When I don't wear earrings, the holes are still visible. One possible reason someone may not like having their ears pierced as a baby is because even if they choose not to wear earrings, the holes are still visible and they may not like that. When I looked at similar questions, there were some people who had their ears pierced as infants and ended up not liking it. And if you want to know why I am so bothered by this, when I go to the mall, seeing this done to infants really haunts me, seeing parents deliberately put their kid through so much pain deliberately.

Thank You! I was at a birthday party not too long ago and my friend walked in with her 3 MONTH OLD daughter with her ears pierced! I was so horrified I couldn't say anything nice about it! I just said "I can't bear it when my daughter gets shots, how could you deliberately put her through that much pain!". Needless to say the mother was speechless and after they left EVERYONE at the party was in shock. It is now the punch line for everything like, "hey, at least I don't poke holes in my babies ears..." So awful, and trashy to boot!

OH and she didn't get them pierced for cultural reasons...she was treating her daughter like her own little fashion toy.

How can I decorate a nursery for a toddler boy and an infant girl?

I know that the most obvious stuff is ocean/tropical, or barnyard/jungle themes, but my house is modern and my husband and I thrive on all things monochromatic and clean lines.. My baby boy's nursery is baby blue and brown. The childlike accent thrown in is a few fluffy sheep:). We are expecting a baby girl next year and only have one room available to serve as the nursery.. any ideas?

Has anyone ever traveled really long distances with their infant?

I am moving, and the drive is a total of 1300 miles. It's an 18 hour drive WITHOUT stops. I have a 6 month old boy. I am really nervous about the ride. Anybody have any advice or tips?
He is a really good boy, and sleeps most of the time in the car anyway, but I am so nervous.

Well I didn't go that far with mine, only 8 hours, but we just stopped every few hours or so & walked around for a few minutes so we could all get a break from the car. We fed her in her car seat then took her out to burp and as soon as she did, we put her right back in. (We stopped, didn't take her out while driving). I really didn't make that much of a difference stopping like that because it was only for a few minutes when she ate, which was every couple of hours. We also took alot of toys, light up ones, loud ones, etc. to keep her busy and one of us sat in the back with her. Really the only advice I can give is to stop & get out every now & then so your little boy can get some time out of his seat.

At what age range do most babies start to crawl?

This seems strange since, of any of these behaviors, crawling is most associated with babies. The truth is many babies never crawl! They do need to find some way to move across the floor. Each will do so at unpredictable times and in distinctive ways. Your grandson may be a scooter, one who likes to stay upright and scoot across the floor on his bottom. Many babies prefer creeping, or wriggling forward on the stomach. Many children will crab-crawl, moving backwards. And, of course, many children will get up on all fours and crawl forward in the traditional way. Each child is unique.

Some adults are concerned that children who don't crawl in the traditional way will be less coordinated. This is a myth. As long as the baby begins to move across the floor using each arm and each leg, there is no cause for concern.

I'm reluctant to mention time frames, but somewhere between six and ten months I expect babies to discover some way to move horizontally across the floor to get desired objects. Obstacles to this include the child's not spending enough time on the floor, using an infant walker (which often eliminates the desire to learn crawling behaviors -- infant walkers are bad for proper development), having toys brought to the infant, pushing the child to learn to crawl, and physical problems such as muscle weakness. If babies actually crawl, it usually begins at around 8 to 10 months

Me: I let my daughter rough house with her dad, play with "boy toys" and generally be a tom-boy. I basically reject the current trend to make my daughter conform to a very strict "gender stereotype". I also chose to go "old fashion" and not make my infant use the potty.

i believe children are children who are people. i believe a 3 year old isnt stupid and comprehends things. i give her chores - pick up your toys, put your dishes away, clean up your room. im anti soda. i believe in giving the opportunity to right your wrongs before a discipline action is taken. books are toys. water cakes wont kill anyone.

Infant ear piercing: What is wrong with these people who call themselves parents?

A baby is a baby not a fashion accesory. Permanent Body mutilation should be the choice of whoever is getting it. I think that parents do have a right to not allow their kid to do it to themselves, because the kid can when they grow up, but they have no right to do it to their kid before they are old enough to decide for themself. I have an arguement against a few of the biggest reasons why a parent would do this to their kid. First, they say it's cute. I think it looks tacky, but for those who do think it is cute, so are hairbows, a lot of baby outfits, and babies in general. Also, see reason above about it being the kid's choice. Second, they say it ends the problem of gender confusion. A simpler, pain free trick even more visible is putting a little girl in pink, boy in blue. Finally, they say it spares the kid the pain of remembering. If the kid doesn't want it and doesn't wear earrings, the holes are still visible. If they want it when they are older, they can if they are allowed.
I was running out of characters for the last reason, so here's what I meant. I had my ears pierced in kindergarten, I wanted to, in case you are wondering. When I don't wear earrings, the holes are still visible. One possible reason someone may not like having their ears pierced as a baby is because even if they choose not to wear earrings, the holes are still visible and they may not like that. When I looked at similar questions, there were some people who had their ears pierced as infants and ended up not liking it. And if you want to know why I am so bothered by this, when I go to the mall, seeing this done to infants really haunts me, seeing parents deliberately put their kid through so much pain deliberately.

Thank You! I was at a birthday party not too long ago and my friend walked in with her 3 MONTH OLD daughter with her ears pierced! I was so horrified I couldn't say anything nice about it! I just said "I can't bear it when my daughter gets shots, how could you deliberately put her through that much pain!". Needless to say the mother was speechless and after they left EVERYONE at the party was in shock. It is now the punch line for everything like, "hey, at least I don't poke holes in my babies ears..." So awful, and trashy to boot!

OH and she didn't get them pierced for cultural reasons...she was treating her daughter like her own little fashion toy.

I think that's so cool you want to spoil your nephew and be the "cool" uncle. I think you're already on your way. OH-- and as he gets older, and your sister gets more comfortable with being away from him, offer to babysit, spend time with him one on one, or just visit him often. My boys love my husband's brother- he doesn't spend a lot of money on them, but he spends TONS of time with them, and is always willing to go to the park and play in the dirt with them, take them to movies, McDonald's, or the zoo. They worship the ground he walks on, and the world stops when he comes over, simply because he's their favorite toy. :)

Anything online is going to have similar shipping cost. the best bet is to go look at second hand infant clothing stores. Try the yellow pages (or 411.com).
We have one in out town that lets us sell the cloths our children outgrew. We put them on consignment. As they sold, we got half of what they sold for, and we always spent it at the store purchasing more age appropriate toys and cloths that fit them.

How can I decorate a nursery for a toddler boy and an infant girl?

I know that the most obvious stuff is ocean/tropical, or barnyard/jungle themes, but my house is modern and my husband and I thrive on all things monochromatic and clean lines.. My baby boy's nursery is baby blue and brown. The childlike accent thrown in is a few fluffy sheep:). We are expecting a baby girl next year and only have one room available to serve as the nursery.. any ideas?

Has anyone ever traveled really long distances with their infant?

I am moving, and the drive is a total of 1300 miles. It's an 18 hour drive WITHOUT stops. I have a 6 month old boy. I am really nervous about the ride. Anybody have any advice or tips?
He is a really good boy, and sleeps most of the time in the car anyway, but I am so nervous.

Well I didn't go that far with mine, only 8 hours, but we just stopped every few hours or so & walked around for a few minutes so we could all get a break from the car. We fed her in her car seat then took her out to burp and as soon as she did, we put her right back in. (We stopped, didn't take her out while driving). I really didn't make that much of a difference stopping like that because it was only for a few minutes when she ate, which was every couple of hours. We also took alot of toys, light up ones, loud ones, etc. to keep her busy and one of us sat in the back with her. Really the only advice I can give is to stop & get out every now & then so your little boy can get some time out of his seat.

Q. I have a baby boy who is five and and half weeks old. All my friends have older kids and seem to have forgotten what it is like to have a baby. I am a first time mother and just want to talk to some folks with babies about the same age. Tell me about your baby. How do they sleep, eat, what is their schedule like if they have one... A. Hello. Congrats, and welcome to the "Mommy club!" I have a beautiful baby boy, named Gabriel, who is about 14 weeks old.
Gabe didn't start really developing a schedule until around about last month. I'm a single mom, so I take him to daycare. We start our day at about 6-6:15a.m. I get myself ready, and then he wakes up to eat. I feed him a bottle, get him burped and dressed, I load the car, then we go to daycare. Thankfully for me, he doesn't sleep much at daycare, so he's tired when I pick him up, but in a good mood. He eats about 6 oz (with a teaspoon of cereal) every 4-5 hours. He's a very curious child already, and doesn't like to be left alone. He constantly craves attention, but is not fussy at all. He just seems to be really curious about the world around him, which I just love.
So, when I pick him up, I either take him home where we spend an hour playing, or we go to Grandma and Grandpa's house, where we play. We do a combination of "bouncy play" or belly time, or toy time, or all three. I talk and sing to him.
After that, at about 6:30p.m.-7p.m. I give him a bath, change him, spend another few minutes holding him, then I feed him. Once he's done with the bottle, I burp him, and put him down immediately in the crib. It usually doesn't take him long to fall asleep. He sleeps an average of about 8-10 hours a night, and we start our day over again.

I'm blessed b/c he's such a good, happy baby.... it took a while to establish the routine, and daycare's really good about keeping one up, and b/c he's so stimulated during the day, and interacting with so many kids and adults, he's exhausted by the time I get him, so he sleeps throught the night.
On the weekends, we just do whatever. I let up on the schedule during the day, but he still goes to bed no later than 7:30pm.-8p.m.

Rolling over, sitting without support, cruising (walking along furniture), and walking independently are important developmental milestones. Crawling isn't.

Crawling isn't even mentioned in my favorite pediatric development textbook!

This seems strange since, of any of these behaviors, crawling is most associated with babies. The truth is many babies never crawl! They do need to find some way to move across the floor. Each will do so at unpredictable times and in distinctive ways. Your grandson may be a scooter, one who likes to stay upright and scoot across the floor on his bottom. Many babies prefer creeping, or wriggling forward on the stomach. Many children will crab-crawl, moving backwards. And, of course, many children will get up on all fours and crawl forward in the traditional way. Each child is unique.

Some adults are concerned that children who don't crawl in the traditional way will be less coordinated. This is a myth. As long as the baby begins to move across the floor using each arm and each leg, there is no cause for concern.

I'm reluctant to mention time frames, but somewhere between six and ten months I expect babies to discover some way to move horizontally across the floor to get desired objects. Obstacles to this include the child's not spending enough time on the floor, using an infant walker (which often eliminates the desire to learn crawling behaviors -- infant walkers are bad for proper development), having toys brought to the infant, pushing the child to learn to crawl, and physical problems such as muscle weakness. Q. I've got a part time job for when I go to Canada babysitting a 4 month old boy. I've had babysitting experience before but for no kids under the age of 18 months. Obviously, this is quite different because he's a lot younger and I can't just leave him to play with his toys like I can do with older kids. Has anyone had any similar experiences? Can you give me some tips?

A. You are certainly right- you can't leave a 4 month old alone! Never leave babies unattended. They'll fall over when you think they won't/can't, etc.! You can talk to them, play with age-appropriate toys with them, sing/lullabys, bath time is enjoyable for them, even reading to them at that young age is recommeneded and my daughter seemed to enjoy it! You can go for walks in the stroller if the weather is nice enough, or just bundle baby up well if it's a bit cold. Also babies like activity centers, jumpers, exersaucers at this age. Baby will be rolling around that age and soon enough, starting to sit up and crawl which is a fun, fun time.

Does anyone know of a modeling agency in Houston that represents newborn infants?

But you have to realize there is VERY little work for newborns. Companies like Pampers or Fisher Price use the same visuals on their packaging and ad campaigns for several years, so that baby you see on the toy box is probably 5 years old by now. When they become toddlers, there are more chances for ad campaigns, catalog work, in-store visuals, etc.
