COGNITIVE development game ideas for infants, toddlers & preschoolers?







im not even sure what cognitive development is, but i need to come up with games/toys that contribute to it. (it can be a toy or game from toys r us) thanks in advance!

Cognitive development is basically memory and problem solving (cause and effect, ect). For infants, mobiles, rattles,teething toys, stacking toys, squeeze toys and picture books.

For 1-3 years, Push-pull and ride-on toys,Small tricycles and wagons, Simple puzzles, shape sorters, peg boards, movement games, Blocks, stacking rings, Picture and coloring books, Crayons, markers, and clay

For 3-5 years, Dress-up with accessories, Puppets, Large bead threading and lace sets, Storybooks
⢠Simple board games (Candyland ,Whac-A-Mole, or Chutes and Ladders),Puzzles (no more than 24 pieces)

How we as human beings develop cognitively has been thoroughly researched. Theorists have suggested that children are incapable of understanding the world until they reach a particular stage of cognitive development. Cognitive development is the process whereby

a childâs understanding of the world changes as a function of age and experience. Theories of cognitive development seek to explain the quantitative and qualitative intellectual abilities that occur during development.

No theory of cognitive development has had more impact than the cognitive stages presented by Jean Piaget. Piaget, a Swiss psychologist, suggested that children go through four separate stages in a fixed order that is universal in all children. Piaget declared that these stages differ not only in the quantity of information acquired at each, but also in the quality of knowledge and understanding at that stage. Piaget suggested that movement from one stage to the next occurred when the child reached an appropriate level of maturation and was exposed to relevant types of experiences. Without experience, children were assumed incapable of reaching their highest cognitive ability. Piagetâs four stages are known as the sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational,and formal operational stages.

The sensorimotor stage in a child is from birth to approximately two years. During this stage, a child has relatively little competence in representing the environment using images, language, or symbols. An infant has no awareness of objects or people that are not immediately present at a given moment. Piaget called this a lack of object permanence. Object permanence is the awareness that objects and people continue to exist even if they are out of sight. In infants, when a person hides, the infant has no knowledge that they are just out of sight. According to Piaget, this person or object that has disappeared is gone forever to the infant.

The preoperational stage is from the age of two to seven years. The most important development at this time is language. Children develop an internal representation of the world that allows them to describe people, events, and feelings.

Children at this time use symbols, they can pretend when driving their toy car across the couch that the couch is actually a bridge. Although the thinking of the child is more advanced than when it was in the sensorimotor stage, it is still qualitatively inferior to that of an adult. Children in the preoperational stage are characterized by what Piaget called egocentric thoughts. The world at this stage is viewed entirely from the childâs own perspective. Thus a childâs explanation to an adult can be uninformative.

Three-year-olds will generally hide their face when they are in trouble--even though they are in plain view, three-year-olds believe that their inability to see others also results in othersâ inability to see them. A child in the preoperational stage also lacks the principle of conservation. This is the knowledge that quantity is unrelated to the arrangement and physical appearance of objects. Children who have not passed this stage do not know that the amount, volume or length of an object does not change length when the shape of the configuration is changed. If you put two identical pieces of clay in front of a child, one rolled up in the shape of a ball, the other rolled into a snake, a child at this stage may say the snake piece is bigger because it is rolled out. Piaget declared that this is not mastered until the next stage of development. The concrete operational stage lasts from the age of seven to twelve years of age. The beginning of this stage is marked by the mastery of the principal of conservation.

Children develop the ability to think in a more logical manner and they begin to overcome some of the egocentric characteristics of the preoperational period. One of the major ideas learned in this stage is the idea of reversibility. This is the idea that some changes can be undone by reversing an earlier action. An example is the ball of clay that is rolled out into a snake piece of clay. Children at this stage understand that you can regain the ball of clay formation by rolling the piece of clay the other way. Children can even conceptualize the stage in their heads without having to see the action performed.

Children in the concrete operational stage have a better understanding of time and space. Children at this stage have limits to their abstract thinking, according to Piaget.

The formal operational stage begins in most people at age twelve and continues into adulthood. This stage produces a new kind of thinking that is abstract, formal, and logical. Thinking is no longer tied to events that can be observed. A child at this stage can think hypothetically and use logic to solve problems. It is thought that not all individuals reach this level of thinking. Most studies show only forty to sixty percent of American college student

I know all babies develop at their own pace, but I wanted to know round about ages for certain goals. Such as, first words, crawling, walking, sitting up, first tooth. Also are there ways to help them with their words?

As your newborn gains better head control, he will begin to push up and fully extend his arms. Babies spend the first six months of life gaining control of their posture, which sets the stage for more advanced motor skills.

Reaching and Grasping: 4 to 5 months
As a newborn's reflexes begin to disappear around 3 to 4 months, he'll use both hands to grasp for objects and have more control. The Palmer reflex, baby's clenched fist that waved spontaneously, has disappeared.

Rolling Over: 4 to 6 month
By six months of age, baby can roll over both ways.

Sitting Up: 6 to 7 months
By six months of age baby is sitting up or getting ready to do so as his back straightens out and strengthens. He is also able to pass a toy from one hand to another. By nine months baby has mastered sitting to the point of twisting and turning in place.

Crawling: 7 to 9 months

Infants: Place baby on their tummy in a safe area on the floor. Get down on their level and talk to your baby to encourage her to raise her head and chest off the floor. Add to this activity as your baby grows by placing colorful toys just out of reach to encourage scooting and crawling.

Development from one stage to the next is thus caused by the accumulation of errors in the child's understanding of the environment; this accumulation eventually causes such a degree of cognitive disequilibrium that thought structures require reorganizing.

The four development stages are described in Piaget's theory as:

The fifth stage occurs from 12 months old to 18 months old. During this stage infants explore new possibilities of objects; they try different things to get different results. Formal operational stage: after age 11 (development of abstract reasoning). Children develop abstract thought and can easily conserve and think logically in their mind.

what are some ideas for activity lesson plans for infants up to 12 months that would cover the cognitive development?

oh yes...lesson plans for infants...this is a current trend in Early Head Start Program.

this is fairly simple it is activities that are developmentallyappropriate for their age and stage...it is based on observations..

for example you might observe a young infant beginning to track object with their eyes...so your lesson plan would be tracking objects and you may set up a mobil....or hold a small toy..you are writing different method to promote tracking

it is a little too much in infant land...but in some cases the children are not getting any stimulation at home and need these enriching opportunities.

COGNITIVE development game ideas for infants, toddlers & preschoolers?
Q. im not even sure what cognitive development is, but i need to come up with games/toys that contribute to it. (it can be a toy or game from toys r us) thanks in advance!

A. Cognitive development is basically memory and problem solving (cause and effect, ect). For infants, mobiles, rattles,teething toys, stacking toys, squeeze toys and picture books.

For 1-3 years, Push-pull and ride-on toys,Small tricycles and wagons, Simple puzzles, shape sorters, peg boards, movement games, Blocks, stacking rings, Picture and coloring books, Crayons, markers, and clay

For 3-5 years, Dress-up with accessories, Puppets, Large bead threading and lace sets, Storybooks
• Simple board games (Candyland ,Whac-A-Mole, or Chutes and Ladders),Puzzles (no more than 24 pieces)

By six months of age baby is sitting up or getting ready to do so as his back straightens out and strengthens. He is also able to pass a toy from one hand to another. By nine months baby has mastered sitting to the point of twisting and turning in place.

Crawling: 7 to 9 months
By nine months of age baby can move forward in some way whether it's creeping, crawling or scooting on his bottom.

Standing: 7 to 9 months
Some babies as early as six months of age can pull to stand.

Walking: 9 to 18 months
The average baby walks a month or two into his second year of life.

Climbing and Pushing: 18 to 24 months
At this age, toddlers have mastered walking to the point of climbing and pushing objects. A toddler can also carry things as he walks.

Dance and Dress: Age Two
Toddlers at this age love to dance, clapping their hands and tapping their feet to the rhythm. A toddler can also get himself out of his car seat and may prefer running to walking. He can also assist in dressing himself and can climb up and down stairs by himself.

Understands the meaning of some words and commands.
Has increased attention span.
Imitates activities.
Searches for hidden objects.
Uses five to 10 words.
Remembers past events for longer periods.
18 to 24 Months:

Engages in imaginary or pretend play.
Can follow two step commands.
Can put words together.
Can identify pictures in a book.

What research evidence is there that object permenence doesn't develop....?

Q. ...until the final sub-stage of the sensori-motor stage of cognitive development, internal representation? Just like Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development states? All I can find is research evidence saying that object permenence is present in children before reaching the final sub-stage.

A. Piaget used to make objects disappear under a cloth and see how children responded. If they were distressed, he assumed this was because the children thought the object no longer existed. Later experiments were more sophisticated. One study that focused on object permanence[5] showed infants a toy car that moved down an inclined track, disappeared behind a screen, and then reemerged at the other end, still on the track. The researchers created a "possible event" where a toy mouse was placed behind the tracks but was hidden by the screen as the car rolled by. Then, researchers created an "impossible event." In this situation, the toy mouse was placed on the tracks but was secretly removed after the screen was lowered so that the car seemed to go through the mouse. Infants as young as 3 1/2 months of age looked longer at the impossible event than at the possible event. This indicated that they were surprised by the impossible event, which suggested that they remembered not only that the toy mouse still existed (object permanence) but also its location. This research suggests that infants understand more about objects earlier than Piaget proposed.

Explain what object permanence is, how it is tested in infancy, and when it develops?
Q. Scientifically/Psychologically speaking.

A. "Object permanence is the term used to describe the awareness that objects continue to exist even when they are no longer visible.

Jean Piaget conducted experiments with infants which led him to conclude that this awareness was typically achieved at eight to nine months of age, during the sensorimotor stage of cognitive development. Such experiments consisted of behavioral tests with infant subjects. The infant would be shown a desirable object or toy, for example, and the toy would then be covered by a blanket or otherwise obscured from view while the infant was watching. Some of the infant subjects would immediately exhibit signs of confusion or dismay. Piaget interpreted these behavioral signs as evidence of a belief that the object had somehow 'vanished' or simply ceased to exist.

Piaget concluded that some infants were too young to understand object permanence, which would tend to explain why they do not cry when their mothers were gone ("out of sight, out of mind").[1] A lack of object permanence can lead to A-not-B errors, where children reach for a thing at a place where it should not be.

In more recent years, the original Piagetian object permanence account has been challenged by a series of infant studies suggesting that much younger infants do have a clear sense of objects persisting when out of sight. One example of an experiment that contradicts the Piagetian perceptions on this is the Bower and Wishart 1972 experiment where a child still groped for a teddy bear, even in total darkness. The inconsistencies in the experimental results and the underlying hypotheses may hinge on the mechanism used to obscure the test objects. For example, infants may simply have a better general understanding of the obscuring effects caused by changes in light.

Studies using the habituation method from the Baillargeon lab have shown that infants as young as 3 months know that an object continues to exist behind a screen even if they cannot demonstrate their knowledge in their behavior."
