name 3 toys/materials to use with infants in each age category. tell whats areas of development each can enhan

Deborah H

Answer
0-3 black and white images- sight
3-6 hanging toys- reaching
6-9 table top toys- standing
9-12 walker toys- walking

Question about walkers?

My bab

I just read an answer someone posted about walkers delaying children walking. I have never heard this and would like to know more. I am a first time mommy and just curious!! Thanks!
It was Ryden's MaMa. If you could please tell me more that would be awesome!! Thanks a bunch!

Answer
I work with infants and toddlers, and every physical therapist i have ever worked with has said they should not be used at all. The way a child "walks" in them or even sits in them is not correct use of their muscles, it's not good at all for their legs. Of course most kids who use them will be just fine, but especially for a child who is already slow in their motor development, or at risk for delays, such as a premature baby, they shouldn't be used. Also, walkers have been linked to more child injuries than any other product for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics actually discourages the use of them all together.

A push toy is totally fine though.

Why not to use a walker?

rivergirl9

I've just read this........ "Do not use an infant walker at any age. The walkers are dangerous and do not help your baby's motor development".

I don't understand this.......we use a walker for our 4 month old. He loves the toys on it and he's touching the floor and moving himself backwards. My Mom used a walker for me and I was crawling at 6 months and walking at 8 months.
Thanks for all the responses! We don't use it as a babysitter. He'll only stay in it about 15-20 mins. and then he's bored and wants out. I mainly use it in the kitchen when I'm cooking dinner and can't hold him. And he's right there with me.....no stairs. No hazards. He can't leave the kitchen as the next room is carpeted and it won't roll on the carpet. But he loves pushing the buttons and seeing the lights and hearing the noises. For now, I think it's good for him.
I didn't mean that the walker helped me learn to walk.......I meant that it obviously didn't hinder me from walking.

Answer
I'm pretty sure the whole "walkers are dangerous" thing is meant for the parents who think it's okay to keep a baby in a Bumbo chair on top of a table, unsupervised.
It's like "caution: may contain hot liquid" on coffee cups or "may contain nuts" on Peanut M&M packages.

If you've babyproofed the area appropriately, always have an eye on your child, don't leave them in there for extended periods and use common sense all around, walkers can be a safe fun time for your baby.

Best toys for 6-12month?? Moms advice needed!!?

Q. Im trying to find new toys to play with my son with. It seems the ones we have no longer interest him much. He has a bouncer, floor jungle gym thing, walker, blocks, books, rattles, music toys, driving toys....any other toys you can think of? what did your child like the best??

Answer
Take the toys that you already have and put them in three boxes. Pack two of the boxes away. Every week alternate the boxes of toys. This worked for my son. It was like new toys every week. Also, try not to let him have to many things out at once, it is overstimulating for infants. He will start to play with one thing and then see another toy and decide to play with that. It can be overstimulating, and doesn't let him engage in anything for a decent amount of time. He will just jump from one thing to the next, and then be done with all his toys in a matter of minutes. As my son has gotten older, I have put all of his toys in little bins. He takes out what he wants, one at a time. When he is done with it, he knows that he must clean up the other toys in order to play another activity. It is working very well for us.

Has anyone ever seen this infant toy?

A_Cullen

I saw an infant toy in a magazine while I was pregnant and I have never been able to find it in stores. It wasn't a jumper, walker, Jumparoo, Exersaucer, or anything like that.

It acually reminded me of the leg press machine in the gym where you lay back and push up and down with your legs except the baby is upright in a seat and they can push the seat up and down using their leg muscles.

My baby loves to use his legs and I would really like to find this product but I've searched everywhere and cannot find it. Has anyone ever seen this toy?

Answer
The only thing I can think of is this:

Infant walkers, anyone know the best one to get?

in2one

What are the pros and cons of a exersaucer over a walker? I know of the hazards of a walker, so no need to waste space on that...I am looking for the best walker...any ideas?
What brand of walker or exersaucer do you recommend?
playsteinway - I want a walker...after reading some posts, I may also purchase an exersaucer....but, I want a walker.

Answer
We have these two exersaucers. Both are great; neither he or I had a preference over them:

Both of these walkers had been great. The less expensive one from toys r' us is better for smaller babies because it's really lightweight & lower to ground. It took him a bit longer to get used to theThe Safety 1st one, but all in all it worked out fine.

Is it necessary (or worth it) to by an infant walker?

Maryam

My nine month old has taken her first steps (she can walk for about 3 steps on her own).
I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to get her the Activity Walker.
Is it a good investment?
Will it help her learn to walk?

I'm just worried that it'll be an extra item to clutter the house.
I don't mean the ones that a baby sits in. I got one of those as a gift and I hate it. I mean the push along ones.

Answer
Get a push and ride toy.

My guys LOVED walking around with theirs. And once they hit 18 months or so, they can ride them for another year until they are ready for a tricycle!

Push and ride toys are worth it. And it is 2 toys in 1. Both pretty important and well loved toys.

What toys -- if any -- are appropriate for infants? my baby is 7 months and he has a few things, like a play mat with hanging animals that makes noises and sings, los of toys, a walker..
what type of things did you havee for your baby to help him/her start to crawl or pull himself up or just for fun that they loved?
thanx!

Answer
Hi

Toys that make music or any form of noise are favorites of babies. Toys with contrasting colors are really interestng to babies and help to stimulate the development of their vision. As they grow, infants use toys to explore object permanence and cause and effect relationships. They also need objects such as blocks to help them build motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

At what age range do most babies start to crawl?

Q. I know all babies develop at different times. In what month do they start to crawl? I have a 4 mo old and he rolls all over the place! I am so excited to see him start crawling! 1st baby and a boy!

Answer
http://www.drgreene.org/body.cfm?id=21&action=detail&ref=354
Rolling over, sitting without support, cruising (walking along furniture), and walking independently are important developmental milestones. Crawling isn't.

Crawling isn't even mentioned in my favorite pediatric development textbook!

This seems strange since, of any of these behaviors, crawling is most associated with babies. The truth is many babies never crawl! They do need to find some way to move across the floor. Each will do so at unpredictable times and in distinctive ways. Your grandson may be a scooter, one who likes to stay upright and scoot across the floor on his bottom. Many babies prefer creeping, or wriggling forward on the stomach. Many children will crab-crawl, moving backwards. And, of course, many children will get up on all fours and crawl forward in the traditional way. Each child is unique.

Some adults are concerned that children who don't crawl in the traditional way will be less coordinated. This is a myth. As long as the baby begins to move across the floor using each arm and each leg, there is no cause for concern.

I'm reluctant to mention time frames, but somewhere between six and ten months I expect babies to discover some way to move horizontally across the floor to get desired objects. Obstacles to this include the child's not spending enough time on the floor, using an infant walker (which often eliminates the desire to learn crawling behaviors -- infant walkers are bad for proper development), having toys brought to the infant, pushing the child to learn to crawl, and physical problems such as muscle weakness. If babies actually crawl, it usually begins at around 8 to 10 months

How do you manage the time between your baby and housework?

best infant walker toys

best infant walker toys image

cooking_ma

I am a new mom. My daughter is 3 months old.
My baby doesn't like to be alone.
At home I have to to houseworks too, cooking, cleaning, etc
She cries when I put her in her crib, even when I have to go to the toilet for a while.
It's still difficult for me to manage the time between parenting and doing houseworks.
Do you have experiences like I have?
Please share yours
Thank you so much

Answer
When my kids were this little, I'd put them in a sling and get stuff done and they were happy being with mommy. However, when they got older I'd put them in the walker while I was cleaning/ cooking. I'd also put them in the play pen with some toys. This way- they learn to entertain themselves. This helps as they grow older into toddler stage. Also, what helps alot is clean as you go so that you won't have to have a big cleaning session later on. For example while you're waiting for spaghetti sauce to boil tidy up the counters or wipe down chairs real quick. Wipe down the microwave immediately after using it, so stuff doesn't stick on it and it takes longer to clean up later. After dinner, rinse off dishes and immediately stick them in the dishwasher so food doesn't stick making it harder to clean later. Wipe the table immediately afterwards. If you use bottles, rinse them out immediately and stick them in the dishwasher instead of letting them pile up. I made it part of my routine after feeding baby. Laundry- see if your husband/ partner can help with this. Throw a load in the washer and then in the dryer and when it's done drying stick it in a laundry basket and have dad help fold/ put away. I was very very OCD when I had my kids, still am. I eventually made a schedule for everything- cleaning, cooking, laundry WHILE it was baby's playtime. My kids were infants I'd take a cat nap while they napped. There for a while, I thought I'd never get any sleep. That's when I got sleep- was while they were asleep. And if they were still asleep when I woke up I'd use that time to fold/ put away laundry. It's a tough job being a stay at home mom but if you make yourself a little time management chart, it's a lot easier. Maybe once or twice a week, get a friend to watch the baby while you do big time cleaning like bathrooms and vacuuming. But be very VERY organized in order to keep everything flowing smooth. Everything has a home. Categorize everything in your home and get rid of unnecessary items that take up space in the home. Excess items and "stuff" just makes the house seem more cluttered and this is when stress sets in. Baby doesn't need a thousand toys to be happy especially at this age. Manage your space in order to manage your time. Get those little cubbies with those canvas bins. This helps me a TON. I have one in every room and closet. Just get organized in both space and time and you'll be OK.

What are the basic things that a baby need before they are born?

Lovely84

This is my first pregnancy. I am due January 21, 2008. I am having a baby boy and a very happy mother-to-be. There are so many things out there for babies. What items do I really need and what can my baby do without???? Please help!!!!

Answer
You are smart for asking this: it will save you a lot of money and a lot of space (from all the useless items you won't have laying around!)
From personal experience you
DO NEED:
1.) LOTS of diapers and wipes
2.) Baby wash (most of them can double as shampoo)
3.) bottles (if bottlefeeding) pacifiers
4.) clothing, of course... lots of socks... they go missing.
5.) a diaper bag to carry everything
6.) a carseat (very important!) Get a good one! Get the baby head supporter thing... it's a must.
7.) a stroller is a must unless you plan on being stranded at the house all the time... and for sanity sake, you'll want to get out.....
8.) crib or basinette and blankets.
9.) a little baby chair, like a bouncy seat... those are great
10.) a little infant bathtub

YOU DON'T NEED:

1.) a jumper or a walker - waste of money
2.) a playpen... it is not a must if you have the baby chair, they've usually got straps to keep the baby secure. Those pens just take up space and later on when you're baby is older they'll just scream whenever you put them in there. I think we used ours twice. If you have a crib, use that instead.
3.) a highchair... don't buy one yet. You won't need it for months and there are many other things you'll need to get right now. When you do get one, get one of the chairs that fits into the dining chairs you've already got... huge spacesaver, just as good!
4.) the door swing jumper thing... DANGEROUS! My son just kept hitting his head on the door frame. Avoid this!
5.) An activity mat. Those things are like $30. Know what works just as well? A blanket on the floor with some toys spread about... plus it seems to prompt baby to crawl sooner that way, or it did for us anyway.
6.) And lastly, a changing table is not a must. If you have one then that's okay. They're not bad, and later, when the baby is older you can use it as a stuffed animal shelf or something. But if you don't have one, don't stress. We've had one the whole time and honestly we changed him on our bed more than anything.

GOOD LUCK and congrats!!

What should I bring when traveling/flying with an 8 month old baby?

Jen

We are flying to Ohio for a week (2 flights about 2 hours each). I am packing, but want to make sure I don't forget anything. I have diapers, wipes, clothes, a few toys, etc. How many bottles should I bring? I nurse and pump everyday, but will probably mostly pump while we are there. Any other suggestions would be great!
We are only bringing two small carry on suitcases and the diaper bag because luggage costs so much.

Answer
I just traveled with my son who was 10 months at the time...God bless you! haha....Anyway, Things I took on the plane with me 2 hour flight plus time in the airport....Diapers, wipes, change of clothes, bib, 2 bottles, 1 can of formula, infant tylenol/motrin, orajel (hes teething pretty bad lately), Food (3 jars), spoons, snacks (cereal), sippy cup, toys (ones that don't make too much noise).

Things I brought in general for the trip....Clothes, PJs, stroller, car seat, toys, baby toiletries (soap, lotion, nail clippers, nasal aspirator, brush, diaper rash cream, baby monitors (we were staying with family, so I was able to put him down for a nap, and still go outside by the pool). Towel and washclothes, sunblock.

I bought food, formula, and diapers when I got there. My relatives also borrowed a lot of baby gear from a friend so I had things there (Pack n Play, walker, high chair).

Check your airlines policies. There usually isn't a charge for checking carseat, strollers, or bassinets (pack n play), even if the child is flying on your lap. You are also allowed to bring the diaper bag plus your carry ons...the diaper bag does not count as your carry on.

Best of luck. I hope you are not traveling alone, and will have help, my son was very good and slept the entire flight there, and if it weren't for my fiance and my mother traveling with us, I would have had a nervous break down.

How do you manage the time between your baby and housework?

If babies actually crawl, it usually begins at around 8 to 10 months.

Crawling may be encouraged by spending time on the floor with the baby, placing favorite toys just out of reach, putting a dog-bone pillow or a rolled towel under his chest when he's on his stomach to keep his head up so he can look around and enjoy himself more when on his stomach, or putting a hand behind his feet to give him something to push against if he tries to crawl.

What are the most important things to put on a baby registry?

im starting my baby registry soon and im not really sure what the most important things are

Answer
Put everything down, that way people have a good amount of options.
Here's a list of all of the things I've used so far with my 4 month old...hope this is helpful!
Crib
Crib mattress
Swing
Bouncer
High Chair
Rocking chair or glider
Baby changing table and dresser
Car seat
Stroller
Walker
Exersaucer
Baby play mat gym
Sling or Baby carrier
Diaper bag
Changing table pad and cover
2 sets of crib sheets
bassinet
bassinet sheets
Jogging stroller if you plan on running or jogging with baby
Pack n play
Breast pump
Plenty of diapers in sizes 1, 2, 3
baby wipes
Diaper rash creams
lotions and baby powders
Infant tylenol
baby grooming kit, nail clippers, hair brush, etc
baby bath robes/towells
baby wash cloths
onsies
sleepers
baby nightgowns
a few outfits in different sizes
teething rings
play toys, books, rattles, stuffed animals
blankets, receiving blankets and plush cozy ones
fresh food feeders
bottles
bottle brush
different sizes of nipples
breast sheilds
breast pads
nursing bras
baby shopping cart seat
baby book
photo albums
digital camera
teething tablets
diaper genie.... I loved mine, that was a must have!
My advice is to go to target or babies r us and register there, they give you a list similar to this one of all the things you might need or want to register for. Put plenty of things on your list, it gives people like family a chance to splurge on you if they want to spend more and people on a tighter budget a chance to purchase things that are less money. Have fun and good luck!

my baby is 7 months and he has a few things, like a play mat with hanging animals that makes noises and sings, los of toys, a walker..
what type of things did you havee for your baby to help him/her start to crawl or pull himself up or just for fun that they loved?
thanx!

Answer

Have a look at the links in my source box which may give you some ideas

Take care

Paul

What toys are appropriate for the first year?

What toys -- if any -- are appropriate for infants? Do infants really play with toys or is it more a matter of peek-a-boo, etc. All the "toys" that I see for babies seem to be either teething items or "clutch" toys (not sure if these do anything more than just give baby something to hold). Seems like you wouldn't need a special toy for that. Any thoughts?

Answer
My son never likeed any of those infant toys. He did use the doorway bouncer, walker, exersaucer quite a bit. Also a baby gym, board books and that lullaby seahorse thing. Also there is this turtle that puts stars on the ceiling... Turtle star night light

When do kids really start playing with toys?

Q. I know 0-3 aren't able to do a whole lot, but when do they start to benefit from toys, like stacking blocks/rings, playing with pots and pans, and such?
0-3 months I mean. Not years.

A. She started using little rings and infant toys around 2 months, like holding them and looking at them, that's about it.

Around 3-4 months they start playing, 6 months we did pots and pans, walkers

At what age did your baby begin to use a walker?
Q. My son will be 3 months old next week and I was thinking about ordering him a walker...what age will he be able to enjoy it?

A. Current doctors advise not to use walkers. They seem to be a danger:

A baby walker is a device that can be used by infants who cannot walk on their own to move from one place to another. Most commonly, it has a base made of hard plastic sitting on top of wheels and a suspended fabric seat with two leg holes. A baby walker often has toys attached to the top to entertain the baby. It is designed for a child between 4 and 16 months. Many parents believe that such walkers teach a child to walk faster, however, studies suggest that it is not true. The devices have also led to many injuries. In fact, CPSC, American Academy of Pediatrics and other organizations have issued warnings to discourage parents from using baby walkers.
