BABY TOYS for younger kids(0- 4 months)?

happygoluc

I can't figure out what to get my nephew for his first Christmas. He will be 4 months! I already got him enough clothes(seeing how he is the first grandchild for both families he has clothes he will NEVER wear haha) and No diapers/diaper products(we buy it from costco so no issue). I was going to buy a baby swing because he likes to be rocked but his daddy and mommy bought it. What toys can I get for him? He will be barely four months when it's Christmas...Oh he has ALL the teething supplies needed haha.

Answer
Check out Tiny Love's website. They make developmental toys for infants. You can see what skills/milestones baby is working on at a specific age and choose toys that have those developmental goals in mind. They make *great* products. I've pasted the link for 3-6 month toys.

Lamaze also makes exceptional developmental toys.

how often can my 3 month old have infant tylonol?

Dayna

like how many days in a row? she has a tooth coming in, she is being very fussy right now..it seems like they're hurting her. She wont nurse and nothing is making her happy...i been giving it to her for a few days now, but I dont know if i should give her any today..i called her doc and he said only give her drops nothing else..because she is too young for ore gel

Answer
I have a 3.5 month old son, and I asked my doctor about this earlier this week. (He's teething too right now.)
He gets the recommended dose for his weight every 4 hours if he's in pain, and my doctor said that as long as we're not giving a larger dose or doing it before 4 hours that he didn't have an 'x' amount of days that it can happen.
Basically, the amount of painkillers in infant tylenol or mortin is very small, so I wouldn't worry about it. I would try doing other things first, though. Infant oragel, teething toy, cold washcloth, etc.

Flying with a 4 month old...?

Melissa M

I'm leaving in a few weeks on a trip from Alaska to Virginia, and will be taking my 4 month old son with me. This is my first flight with an infant, and I have NO idea what to expect or do!! Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I now fly a lot with my own three children. We usually travel between Europe and California about twice a year and each was 4 months old on their first trip.

This is really the best age to travel with a baby; no longer a needy newborn but not yet crawling and getting into things. You also don't have to bring food since solids at still *at least* two months away. Only a few toys are needed...

First of all, I really recommend bringing a car seat and using it onboard. Make sure your car seat is approved for use on aircraft. If you're flying on a U.S. company, see the below link for information on if it's approved. Most car seats, including infant buckets, sold in the U.S. are.

http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

This way, the seat will get to your destination without risking it being damaged or lost in luggage. On one of our last transatlantics last year with my kids, three of our four bags didn't make it but since we had the car seat with us, my daughter was safe for the 2 hour drive home (the bags arrived 2 days later). I saw at least two other seats while looking for our luggage. Wonder how they got home?

If you don't have a seat for him, request it at check-in. Ask if the flight is full, and if not, they can "block" the seat next to you, only using it if they really need it. They often do this for families.

Bring the seat to the gate, even if they are unsure that you'll get a seat. This way, if you don't manage it, they will "gate check" your seat, sending it down with the strollers and wheelchairs. This is gentlier than checking it in at the desk.

If you have a travel system, you can use the stroller until you get to the door of the aircraft and then it'll be "gate checked". If not, use a stroller frame for a infant seat. You'll have it again, by the door of the aircraft when you arrive. If you have a convertible car seat (going to 40lbs), there are a number of contraptions you can use to wheel it around. I simply strap mine to a small metal luggage cart and that works great.

If you do have a stroller, bring a bungee cord and double secure it before leaving it at the door of the plane. They can get damaged if they pop open en route. Make sure the claim ticket can be seen and isn't squished or hidden. Be sure to ask when disembarking where the stroller is.

I also recommend trying to sit at the bulkhead. These are the seats with the wall in front, located in different places depending on the aircraft. Bulkheads are easier with children since no one is leaning in front of you and you can get in and out of them easier.

Bring at least 1/3 more diapers than you think you'll need. I saw so many parents run out on flights when I was working! Wrap them in plastic bags and throw a bunch of rubber bands around them to save room in your carry-on.

For a formula fed baby, I really recommend using the bottles with plastic liners. Traditional bottles are too difficult to wash onboard because of the kind of sinks on airplanes. I premeasured the powder and rolled them up, placing the rolls in a ziplock bag. Then you throw the liners away as you use them and only have the ring and nipple to clean.

If you use bottled water, be sure to give yourself enough time to buy some once you're past security. Make sure you have enough! The water on the aircraft is filtered tap so decide if you're comfortable using that for your baby. Bottled water runs out fast on flights and we never had any extra for baby bottles.

Be sure your baby does not need the bottle warmed. Get him used to a room-temperature bottle before leaving. This is unnecessary health-wise and a real pain to do while travelling. I warmed many bottles on my flights but I wasn't there in the check-in line, the security line or the waiting area! Babies do great with room-temperature bottles.

Make sure you have at least one change of clothes. I would bring two. At that age, I simply dressed mine in sleep suits for flying. No one will care so keep him comfortable.

Hopefully you have a good baby carrier. They're so useful for flying, especially at this age. I had a sling but other parents swear by their wraps and pouches. The Ergo and Beccos are other popular carriers for travel that go on the back.

I liked the sling because I could slide my babies from into and out of a stroller or car seat without waking them. It also doubled as a blanket, baby changer, breastfeeding cover-up and sunshade! My sling was magic for calming my babies during the flight. Other parents wanted one when they saw how easy it made my travels. Avoid front packs like the Bjorn since they're so bad for both the parents' and child's back. A good carrier should go to at least age 2.

Many flying tips say to make the child suck on something or drink during take-off and landing. This is actually a myth. ENT specialists say to have the child awake about an hour before landing (top of descent, landing or touch-down is too late).

http://www.entcda.com/AAOHNSF/earsandaltitude.htm

I can confirm that is when I saw problems at work. Take your child to the doctor in the last few days before you fly to make sure his ears are clear and infection-free. Heathy ears can handle pressurization changes. No need to wake a child on take-off, remove him from him seatm force him to drink or make him take a pacifier. None of my children had paci's, two never had bottles and I kept all strapped into their seats for take-off and landing without any ear problems.

About 8 years ago, I wrote an article on flying with children for an expat newsletter. Over the years many parents have contributed. I later put it on a blog so that parents had access to non-commercial information from someone with both practical and professional experience on the web.

Any infant toy recommendations?

alexis7310

I have a 6 month old daughter and I just recently began sitting for a 5 1/2 month old girl also.
I have all the big stuff (swing, jumparoo', entertainer, etc...) and lots of rattles, balls, stuffed animals...but am looking for other toys that might keep their interest longer and help them learn as well.

Any recommendations/links would be helpful!

Answer
I have an in-home daycare...currently I have 4 infants that range from 4 months to 11 months, here are the favorites:

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=31376&pcat=bubrilliant
The 6 months olds can close them easily, around 10 months they learn to open them also.

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30446&pcat=bulnl
This is an expensive one but well worth the investment in my opinion...it keeps ages 6 months all the way to 4 years old occupied

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30446&pcat=bulnl
Another big one, but it's great for kids around 6-10 months learning how to put things into other things, plus the balls themselves are entertainment :)

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=33177&pcat=bugym
Great for crawlers, fun to chase :)

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30444&pcat=bulnl
Pretty much any type of activity table is a must once they hit around 6-7 months, they are great for learning to stand and play

Well I could go on and on...I have a zillion toys and the kids love most of them...if you'd like more ideas let me know, I'd be happy to help!

Traveling with 4 month old infant. What should i know?

Mommy of 2

We are leaving monday for a 12 day trip. first for a week to grandma's house and then 5 days to Disney world. We are flying.

Any advice to come my 4m old on the plane? Any good info to know about traveling with a small infant?
To the comment on to young going to Disney. Yes i believe he is too young to understand Disney. However we plan out vacations a year in advance. It would have broken my 7 years old heart not to be going.

Answer
My best advice, after just traveling from NY to Greece with my 4mo: ask for the bulkhead seats and a bassinet. A life saver.

Bring extra clothes in your carry on for the baby. A few toys. Twice as many diapers as you would think, a kitchen garbage bag to cover the changing tables, ziplocs for dirty diapers and a blanket to cover the bassinet.

And Tylenol for you. ;-)

6 month old baby?

brittany_m

I have a 6 month old daughter and I am wondering if she should be able to sit up on her own by now.

Answer
Sitting up is usually 4-8 months. With 8 months being when doctors start testing.

But babies don't learn to sit up all on their own, they need help from mommy and daddy to learn.

(Hmm some sites seem to say 9 months is still normal, but I know my friend's doctor was worried at 7 and said if not by 8 months they would do testing?)

"# By 6 to 7 months, baby can sit for a few moments (with legs spread apart).
# By 8 to 9 months, the baby can sit steadily and change position from sitting to getting on the floor and back again."

http://www.parentscanada.com/developing/baby/articles.aspx?listingid=102

"Sitting up (8 months)
Once your baby has enough balance, arm strength, and head, neck, and lower-body control, she'll be able to sit up and take in a whole new world. At this point, her improving eyesight will allow her to see objects outside her direct line of vision â and she'll try to pull herself up to get a better look.

At first, she won't be able to sit up for long on her own and may need to put out her hand for balance. To motivate your baby to sit well, dangle or set her favorite toy in front of her, then slowly move it from side to side to encourage her to reach for the toy and rely solely on her torso and legs for balance. She'll be sitting without help in no time!"
http://www.parenting.com/parenting/baby/article/0,19840,1590411,00.html

"By the end of their seventh month, most babies:

* Roll over both ways (stomach to back and back to stomach)
* Sit up '
http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/298_10203.asp

"In general, infants between 6 and 9 months old:
Sit unassisted. While many infants start to work on their sitting skills before this age, their ability to sit well (in other words, without tipping over and hurting themselves) takes some time. By 7 months, the average infant can sit while leaning on both hands for support. By a month later, he will progress to sitting alone without support, and by 9 months, most can reliably sit unassisted for longer periods of time."

Toys for infant?

cj2004

I need some ideas on toys for my son who is 4 1/2 months old. I stay at home with him and he gets lots of attention. But there are moments I need to do something. Like right now I've been trying to get ready to go to the store and he's just whining. He's in his exersaucer with a baby video in. Nothing keeps his attention for any length of time, even a few minutes. I know part of it is his age. Is there anything that has worked for anyone or am I just going to have to deal until he learns to play better with age (and when does that happen)?

Answer
Get the Baby Einstein Baby Mozart, Beethoven, etc. DVD or videos. My daughter is now 8 months, and she STILL will sit there for at least an hour and watch the pictures and listen to the music. It's AMAZING how much she loves it.

Also, LAMAZE toys are terrific, especially for children your sons age that are starting to play with toys more with their hands. They are very colorful, and normally make some sort of noise. You can get them at places like Babies R Us, Kohls, Toys R Us, etc.

Also, I got a vibrating rocker chair from Fischer Price that has a detachable toy arch. It has a cow/farm theme. She has loved that chair pretty much since birth. She naps in it, plays in it, and it's wonderful!!!

Finally, anything with a mirror in it. Look for activing chairs or gyms that have mirrored things on them. My baby now likes to have conversations with herself! lol!

Good luck!

parents of 4 months-1 year olds! please help!?

Bre Bree

I have a infant observation paper I need to write for my child development class, however, I don't know anyone with infants to observe! I was wondering if anyone on here with babies ages 4 months-1year can help me by answering some questions. I GREATLY appreciate it! Thank you so much to all who helped out! If you could just state the age of your baby and answer the questions listed that would be GREAT! :) Thank you!

What does your infant eat and when?
Infant's favorite foods?
Any allergic reaction to foods?
When does your infant typically go to bed and wake up?
Are they still waking up during the night?
How does your infant's napping go?
What type of sounds/motor skills does your infant make?
Does your infant have any separation anxiety when left with caregivers, other family members/friends etc?
What are the infant's favorite toys?
What is an item that always provides comfort?

I know there is quite a few questions! Thank you SO much if you answered them. I really appreciate it!

what are symptoms for strep throat in infants?

Bethany B

what are some symptoms for strep throat in a four month old

Answer
Infants rarely get strep throat infection but they can get other types of strep infections. Watch out for a fever or a rash. If either is present then consult your pediatrician immediately. If the child is lthargic or less active then normal get him checked out. At this age any fever over 100 degrees F. should be checked out. At 4 months the baby does not have any risistance. If he is breast fed then wonderful. He will get some antibodies from moms milk. Not all moms can breast feed and should be sure the bottles and pacifiers are throughally cleaned. Some infections can be spread through impropperly cleaned bottles. You can visit Clorox's web site for information on sterilizing baby bottles. The bleach will kill any strep bacteria if cleaned according to directions. Also clean the baby's toys as those end up in their mouths as well. Keep hands clean and anyone comming into contact with the baby should be healthy and wash their hands at this age. It is ok to ask anyone near your baby if they have washed their hands. If they take offence then you can tell them they cannot hold the precious baby till they do so.

Congratulations on your new arrival. As always you can consult your pediatrician for any concerns. They are happy to do so. Make a list of questions and take it with you to all appointments. I have a notebook that i just keep adding too.

I have a 4 month old and an 18 month old. The 18 month old sleeps great, 12 hours a night. The 4 month old goes right down at night but does wake a few times for a feeding. I tried it last night and the 18 month old slept through the night wakings. Does anyone have any experience with this? I have been trying to wean the baby from most of her night feeds but it just doesnt work. I think it is too early and would like to wait until she is closer to 6 months. Thanks!

Answer
My son woke up once a night for a nursing until he was 13 months old. Since he nursed like he was hungry, I didn't do anything to cut it out. He just stopped doing it on his own.

Whether your toddler fully wakes or not, their sleep is still disrupted, and it can cause deprivation issues.

Also, is your toddler still in a crib? Do you feel comfortable that she won't try to help your infant by giving her toys in her crib? Or that she won't pull on her or such?

Personally, I wouldn't put them together at that age, though I realize that it is done all of the time. But, I have the option, so I will avoid it.

Where are the cheapest places to by baby supplies?

My friend is having a baby shower for her son who is due sometime in 3-4 months. Im not sure. Im on a budget but want to make her a nice basket. I plan on diapers and some onesies and some other small things. I know she is looking for jake footie pajamas and has dc shoes on her wish list. I dont know if I can get her all that but I do want to know the cheapest places to find baby items. We have a walmart and a dollar store ao it may need to be online. If anyone else has any ideas for a basket let me know. I am not sure yet whether she will be using breast or bottle. Should I get some bibs or a blanket?

Answer
Um, does DC Shoes even make sizes for infants? I wouldn't get her name brand stuff as the baby will outgrow it quickly. I don't know about the Jake footie pajamas either.

Amazon and Wal-mart has some cheap shipping options too.

I would consider getting her the onesies packs that Wal-mart sells. I would throw in some teethers (a set of 3 is cheap). A glowhorse or a glow-worm in the toy section of Wal-mart is a good buy because every baby I've seen loves them. I would consider a package of regular cloth diapers for burping. Bibs I'd hold off on. Receiving blankets maybe but those big plush ones aren't actually recommended till the child is out of the SIDS range. I would consider a sleeper gown. Baby shampoo and wash clothes are good for baskets.

Any clothes you get, I'd recommend buying in the 3-6 or 6-9 months range. A lot of people will buy clothes in the 0-3 range or newborn so that way the baby has stuff to grow into.

Does anybody have any tips for babysitting for an infant?

I've got a part time job for when I go to Canada babysitting a 4 month old boy. I've had babysitting experience before but for no kids under the age of 18 months. Obviously, this is quite different because he's a lot younger and I can't just leave him to play with his toys like I can do with older kids. Has anyone had any similar experiences? Can you give me some tips?

Answer
You are certainly right- you can't leave a 4 month old alone! Never leave babies unattended. They'll fall over when you think they won't/can't, etc.! You can talk to them, play with age-appropriate toys with them, sing/lullabys, bath time is enjoyable for them, even reading to them at that young age is recommeneded and my daughter seemed to enjoy it! You can go for walks in the stroller if the weather is nice enough, or just bundle baby up well if it's a bit cold. Also babies like activity centers, jumpers, exersaucers at this age. Baby will be rolling around that age and soon enough, starting to sit up and crawl which is a fun, fun time.

Anyone have any tips for flying with an infant?

rain_lit_h

I've only been on one flight trip, and that was before I had a baby. I'm about to go on a trip with my 4 month old in 3 weeks and was just wondering if anyone had any helpful tips for flying with a baby. The longest flight will only be 2 and a half years old, and he is a breastfed baby. Any tips or advice would be really appreciated.

Answer
Try to keep the baby awake as much as possible on the day of trip so no naps before the flight.
Use a Brest pump to pump milk into storage bags so you can use bottles on the flight this is what i did for my baby it's best to keep the baby seatbelted in for safety caution instead of getting baby out to breast feed it.
Then before you get on plain make sure to chang babies diaper then when on flight baby will be really tired and will easily fall asleep if you hold the bottle for it while it's buckled in and hopefully will stay asleep for a good while for a smooth flight.
This teqniequ worked well for me and I hope it does for you
Good luck.
P.S. also remember to bring babies favorite blanky at least 1 favorite small toy and a binkie with clip and small strap to clip on babies shirt that way they won't fall on floor to help comfort baby when awake also don't forget a few diaper for during the flight and defently keep all this in carry on bag.

My 7 month old fights diaper changes and getting dressed. What can I do to prevent this?

Kate B

My 7 month old has fought diaper changes since before crawling and has hated me dressing her since birth. There was a short time when she didn't mind me dressing her. According to her pediatrician, she is 3 to 4 months developmentally advanced, and I often wonder if her level of awareness makes her difficult to change and dress. Anyone else experience this with you infant? Did you find anything to help make changing/dressing less of a struggle? ...or when did you child grow out of this stage?

Answer
Every baby hates to be changed around that age. My daughter throws a fit when I change her diaper and get her dressed. Give your baby a toy, or keys something that you normally would not let her play with. I give my daughter my wrist watch she is amazed by it. She keeps still

How to babysit twin two year olds and an infant?

Q. This weekend, I will be babysitting twin two year old girls and a baby girl (4 months ish). I have babysat for just the twins before and did well, but I need advice on how to take care of all of them at once, and on what to do whit the infant. Thanks!

A. Hello! I've been babysitting for 4.5 years for children exactly those ages! The tough part of the job will be if the baby cries, which, at 4 months she probably will. Here are a few main causes of crying in infants:
-hungry
-needs to be burped
-needs diaper change
-uncomfortable
-too hot or cold
-too much noise and stimulation
-not enough stimulation
-separation anxiety (even babies that young can miss their mothers although that typically starts closer to 6 months)

So obviously, you are going to have to try various things to stop the crying.s Start by checking the diaper and try giving her a bottle. Even if it's not the exact time the mom said to feed her, she may be hungry anyway. Pat her gently on the back to burp her and wait for a burp. Try to figure out if she could be uncomfortable with her clothing or the temperature. If it's noisy, take her to a quiet place. If nothing is going on, try to get her interested in toys and give her some tummy time. Try putting her in a bouncer or baby swing. A white noise machine can work wonders. Try rocking her and holding her in various ways to see what works. Carry her and walk around, GENTLY bouncing your heels. Make shushing sounds, talk quietly, or sing soothing songs. Remember, it probably isn't your fault she is crying and she isn't doing it on purpose. Be patient and do not get frustrated! Do not shake her at all as that could lead to Brain damage or even death. If you grow frustrated, set her in her crib and step away for five minutes, it's okay of she cries for a few minutes. If you need to, call her mom and ask ahead of times what she does to soothe the baby. Meanwhile, let the toddlers play on their own just make sure that you can see them at all times!

Before the mom leaves, ask her what the babies schedule is. Here are a few questions to ask:
-how to prepare bottle
-when baby gets bottle
-how to change diaper (but you probably already know)
-how to put her to bed/naps
-when bed/nap is
-how to calm baby
-if she has a pacifier or anything to help calm her down

And anything else you can think of! Try to come with a few coloring books or old toys for the toddlers so that they don't get bored because sometimes dealing with the baby may take up a lot of the time. Some babies are naturally independent and happy though so you may not have a problem! If you babysat the twins before, you already know what to do with them so they will be easy! Have fun, hope I helped!

What infant toy(s) do you think actually benefits your child developmentally?
Q. My guys are 4 months, and so far I think the activity gym (the mat with toys hanging overhead) is the only thing that really develops them in a way that not having it would not.

The swing, jumper, infant chairs etc. are soothing / fun, but not developmental, but the activity mat allows them to do something they couldn't yet otherwise, which is to grab and bat at toys.

A. I feel the same way. I have a jumper and a swing and they simply keep my son distracted (for a short period of time) when I need to be doing something. The activity mat actually engages his mind and helps him to play. It is by far his favorite place to be when I'm not holding him. I have recently tried him in a Jumperoo and he loved that thing so much he got kinda mad at me when I took him out of it because I could tell he was getting exhausted. It has lights and makes noises when he jumps and he loves light and noises. (And belly dancers for some reason, but I won't get in to that here.) (:

What games or toys should I orgnaize for our baby?
Q. Our baby is 4 months old. We live overseas, so toys are not so varied. What games are good to play with her and what toys are useful at this age?

A. Most toys you can make yourself. You need to make toys that engage your baby's senses, especially touch, sound, and sight. You can make your own shakers by putting beans and ANY other small object in a can or bottle and tapping it shut. It will give your baby a variety of noises to hear and sharpen her sense of hearing. Also, bright colors and lights are easiest for baby to see right now. When you introduce sights, sounds and textures to your baby, you help stimulate the senses and prepare a memory bank of experiences that feed imaginative thinking. You can use anything...try a flashlight on the wall, a laser pointer on the ground (not in your baby's face, of course!) or a prism so your baby can see the different colors. For texture, just use different types of cloth and towels from around your house. Put them near your baby so she can reach for them herself and explore on her own. She will feel them and experience different textures.
Here are some other ideas for encouraging your 4 month old to learn and play:

* During tummy time, place a favorite toy or soft ball in front of the baby to reach for.
* Hide one of your baby's toys - but don't hide it very well - and encourage him or her to find it.
* Let your baby discover that her actions can make things happen. Provide toys that will move or make sounds when your infant manipulates them, such as baby musical instruments, busy boxes, or see-through toys that show motion.
* Sing your favorite nursery rhymes like "Baa, Baa Black Sheep" and "Hey Diddle Diddle".
