What's the best way to clean/disinfect a stuffed toy bought at a yard sale, before giving it to my infant?

Geoff_and_

Answer
I always wash them in the washer

Is there something I can give my 4 month old to boost her immune system she is in daycare!?

red_rabbit

Answer
No, you shouldn't give vitamins or anything like that to infants of that age (except vitamin D for breastfed babies.) If you are breastfeeding her, you are giving her immunities that will help out with keeping her from getting sick, but other than that, just hope that your daycare provider takes precautions with kids who could be contagious and disinfecting toys and things like that.

Babies and Toys?

TT

When do babies usually become interested in toys. My 2 month old only seems to like her dangly toys like from her bouncy seat, swing and crib. I was just wondering if she should be inerested in rattles and other things yet. Also, what are some of the better and more educational toys that they first play with?

Answer
Every year Oppenheim evaluates infant toys and gives awards for the best 'developmental' toys that engage the baby's senses and encourage different skills (eye tracking, eye-hand coordination, understanding of cause and effect, understanding of object permanence, gross- and fine-motor development etc.) You can see the award winning toys here: http://www.toyportfolio.com/Infants/Index.asp.

Tiny Love has several award winning toys. Their website is also very informative about how each of their toys encourages infant development. http://www.tinylove.com
They have several amazing infant activity gyms. (See link below.) The activity gyms tend to be pricey but you can find them for reasonable prices on Craigslist or Ebay.

Lamaze also makes many award winning toys. (See link below.) Their toys tend to be soft and cuddly with many textures, peek-a-boo flaps, patterns, colors, and sounds to explore.

Have fun watching your little one explore and see her developing right before your eyes. :D

What kind of toys work best? Which do you recommend?

Q. Impressive Carriegr...lol
Thanks Salreyjr, I'll have to try your toy.

Answer
Fisher-Price has toys for every stage of growth and development. From infant activity toys, to discovery toys for toddlers, to imagination- and creativity-building toys for preschoolers and early school-age kids, Fisher-Price toys make growing and learning through all stages of development so much fun!

what toys are good for 6 to 12 month old babies?

sandysneak

My 1st grandchild will be 5 months old at Christmas time. What toys are good or best for her at that age? I'd like personal comments, not manufacturers boasts.
I appreciate your sincere answers but would really like to know which specific toys are suitable. It's been many, many years since my girls were babies and I know there has been a lot more developmental toys since then. I've looked online but can't find more than 1 or 2 reviews on the toys. Please help me choose specific toys so that I don't waste money on duds. Thank you. (Knives, as a previously submitted answer will get reported to abuse as I've already done. Must have been Charles Manson or a wannabe).

Answer
my babies are 7 months now and they like those little keys that have buttons to play with music. Anything that plays music, they like those rolling balls, and chew toys. Also, books, its good to read books to infants. its bonding time when they get books read to them.

Flying with a 4 month old...?

Melissa M

I'm leaving in a few weeks on a trip from Alaska to Virginia, and will be taking my 4 month old son with me. This is my first flight with an infant, and I have NO idea what to expect or do!! Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I now fly a lot with my own three children. We usually travel between Europe and California about twice a year and each was 4 months old on their first trip.

This is really the best age to travel with a baby; no longer a needy newborn but not yet crawling and getting into things. You also don't have to bring food since solids at still *at least* two months away. Only a few toys are needed...

First of all, I really recommend bringing a car seat and using it onboard. Make sure your car seat is approved for use on aircraft. If you're flying on a U.S. company, see the below link for information on if it's approved. Most car seats, including infant buckets, sold in the U.S. are.

http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

This way, the seat will get to your destination without risking it being damaged or lost in luggage. On one of our last transatlantics last year with my kids, three of our four bags didn't make it but since we had the car seat with us, my daughter was safe for the 2 hour drive home (the bags arrived 2 days later). I saw at least two other seats while looking for our luggage. Wonder how they got home?

If you don't have a seat for him, request it at check-in. Ask if the flight is full, and if not, they can "block" the seat next to you, only using it if they really need it. They often do this for families.

Bring the seat to the gate, even if they are unsure that you'll get a seat. This way, if you don't manage it, they will "gate check" your seat, sending it down with the strollers and wheelchairs. This is gentlier than checking it in at the desk.

If you have a travel system, you can use the stroller until you get to the door of the aircraft and then it'll be "gate checked". If not, use a stroller frame for a infant seat. You'll have it again, by the door of the aircraft when you arrive. If you have a convertible car seat (going to 40lbs), there are a number of contraptions you can use to wheel it around. I simply strap mine to a small metal luggage cart and that works great.

If you do have a stroller, bring a bungee cord and double secure it before leaving it at the door of the plane. They can get damaged if they pop open en route. Make sure the claim ticket can be seen and isn't squished or hidden. Be sure to ask when disembarking where the stroller is.

I also recommend trying to sit at the bulkhead. These are the seats with the wall in front, located in different places depending on the aircraft. Bulkheads are easier with children since no one is leaning in front of you and you can get in and out of them easier.

Bring at least 1/3 more diapers than you think you'll need. I saw so many parents run out on flights when I was working! Wrap them in plastic bags and throw a bunch of rubber bands around them to save room in your carry-on.

For a formula fed baby, I really recommend using the bottles with plastic liners. Traditional bottles are too difficult to wash onboard because of the kind of sinks on airplanes. I premeasured the powder and rolled them up, placing the rolls in a ziplock bag. Then you throw the liners away as you use them and only have the ring and nipple to clean.

If you use bottled water, be sure to give yourself enough time to buy some once you're past security. Make sure you have enough! The water on the aircraft is filtered tap so decide if you're comfortable using that for your baby. Bottled water runs out fast on flights and we never had any extra for baby bottles.

Be sure your baby does not need the bottle warmed. Get him used to a room-temperature bottle before leaving. This is unnecessary health-wise and a real pain to do while travelling. I warmed many bottles on my flights but I wasn't there in the check-in line, the security line or the waiting area! Babies do great with room-temperature bottles.

Make sure you have at least one change of clothes. I would bring two. At that age, I simply dressed mine in sleep suits for flying. No one will care so keep him comfortable.

Hopefully you have a good baby carrier. They're so useful for flying, especially at this age. I had a sling but other parents swear by their wraps and pouches. The Ergo and Beccos are other popular carriers for travel that go on the back.

I liked the sling because I could slide my babies from into and out of a stroller or car seat without waking them. It also doubled as a blanket, baby changer, breastfeeding cover-up and sunshade! My sling was magic for calming my babies during the flight. Other parents wanted one when they saw how easy it made my travels. Avoid front packs like the Bjorn since they're so bad for both the parents' and child's back. A good carrier should go to at least age 2.

Many flying tips say to make the child suck on something or drink during take-off and landing. This is actually a myth. ENT specialists say to have the child awake about an hour before landing (top of descent, landing or touch-down is too late).

http://www.entcda.com/AAOHNSF/earsandaltitude.htm

I can confirm that is when I saw problems at work. Take your child to the doctor in the last few days before you fly to make sure his ears are clear and infection-free. Heathy ears can handle pressurization changes. No need to wake a child on take-off, remove him from him seatm force him to drink or make him take a pacifier. None of my children had paci's, two never had bottles and I kept all strapped into their seats for take-off and landing without any ear problems.

About 8 years ago, I wrote an article on flying with children for an expat newsletter. Over the years many parents have contributed. I later put it on a blog so that parents had access to non-commercial information from someone with both practical and professional experience on the web.

Have a great flight!

Any infant toy recommendations?

alexis7310

I have a 6 month old daughter and I just recently began sitting for a 5 1/2 month old girl also.
I have all the big stuff (swing, jumparoo', entertainer, etc...) and lots of rattles, balls, stuffed animals...but am looking for other toys that might keep their interest longer and help them learn as well.

Any recommendations/links would be helpful!

Answer
I have an in-home daycare...currently I have 4 infants that range from 4 months to 11 months, here are the favorites:

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=31376&pcat=bubrilliant
The 6 months olds can close them easily, around 10 months they learn to open them also.

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30446&pcat=bulnl
This is an expensive one but well worth the investment in my opinion...it keeps ages 6 months all the way to 4 years old occupied

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30446&pcat=bulnl
Another big one, but it's great for kids around 6-10 months learning how to put things into other things, plus the balls themselves are entertainment :)

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=33177&pcat=bugym
Great for crawlers, fun to chase :)

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30444&pcat=bulnl
Pretty much any type of activity table is a must once they hit around 6-7 months, they are great for learning to stand and play

Well I could go on and on...I have a zillion toys and the kids love most of them...if you'd like more ideas let me know, I'd be happy to help!

Traveling with an infant?

brittany

In a few weeks I'll be traveling to the west coast. Not only is this my first plane ride but I will have my toddler wit me as well. Does anyone have any tips or advice they can give me.

Answer
Brittany,

Since you will be traveling with a young child on a longer plane ride it is very important that you be prepared for the unexpected.

Be sure to pack enough extra clothes, diapers, food and drink items for your child.

Keeping your child occupied while at the airport and then on the plane will be your biggest challenge.

I am not sure what time of day you will be traveling but it might be a good idea to travel around your child's nap time. However, it may not matter because all the new sites and people around will keep your child very occupied so it may be hard to get your child to nap.

If you child is walking, I would recommend that while you are waiting at the airport try to walk your child around a little bit and point out some interesting sites. You will want to try to keep them occupied while at the same time tire them out. This way once things settle down on the airport you child may be so pooped out that they will fall asleep.

I would recommend bringing toys that can entertain your child but at the same time not disturb the other passengers as much.

Also you may want to plan ahead and see if you can reserve a seat toward the back of the plane. This way you will be near the bathroom in case it is needed and also will have a little more room if you need to get up and rock your child.

A window seat may also work to help occupy your child if you are traveling during the day as during take off and landing they will have something to look at through the window.

I am not sure if you child watches any TV yet, I know it is hard at that age as kids do not have a long attention span. But you could also try bringing along a DVD player to watch some movies. Or if you have a smartphone, there are plenty of You Tube videos on there with short cartoon clips to keep your child somewhat occupied.

How these tips help and good luck!

Nadine

Is it necessary (or worth it) to by an infant walker?

Maryam

My nine month old has taken her first steps (she can walk for about 3 steps on her own).
I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to get her the Activity Walker.
Is it a good investment?
Will it help her learn to walk?

I'm just worried that it'll be an extra item to clutter the house.
I don't mean the ones that a baby sits in. I got one of those as a gift and I hate it. I mean the push along ones.

Answer
Get a push and ride toy.

My guys LOVED walking around with theirs. And once they hit 18 months or so, they can ride them for another year until they are ready for a tricycle!

Push and ride toys are worth it. And it is 2 toys in 1. Both pretty important and well loved toys.

Developmentally appropriate Themes for young infants classroom?

datsmyname

Please provide a list and a short explanation why you think its developmentally appropriate for infants.

Answer
I know this isn't the answer you are looking for, but there is no reason to have a theme in an infant classroom. Young infants need a consistent routine, a warm and loving relationship with a caregiver, age appropriate toys and a comfortable environment with room to move around. They need to be held , read to, and, most of all, talked to. The only reason to have a theme is to impress parents and it would be more helpful if you demonstrated what genuine infant curriculum is.

whats the most natural way??

princessba

to get rid of thrush in my 6 mth old babs mouth???
white blobs on the corners of his mouth, looks painful coz doesnt wanna eat.

Answer
1) Antibiotics will CAUSE thrush, not prevent it.

2) Thrush doesn't normally present in the corners of the mouth but generally on the inside, so I would advise being seen by a nurse/doctor.

However, assuming it is thrush here are some ideas, and even if it isn't none of this will be bad for your baby.

1) Wipe down the area with dilute vinegar (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water)
2) Grapefruit Seed Extract is a natural anti-fungal that is safe for newborns, you can get it at most health food stores.
3) Give acidophilus pills or active cultured GOAT's milk yogurt daily. Check the bottle for dosing of the pills each brand is different. Just open the capsules the inside powder tastes pretty good. This is good for health in general and many people and children take every day all the time, not just when they have a problem.

If you are breastfeeding be sure to treat your nipples as well.

YOU MUST also treat the laundry as it is spread that way. Bleach is not an efficient way of killing yeast(thrush),. Wash your laundry in the hottest water possible and
Hot water over 122º F will kill yeast, either in the laundry, dishwasher, sink, or on your skin (not infants â too hot!). Add one cup of vinegar to the final rinse, you can use a fabric softener dispenser ball. (In addition vinegar is a natural fabric softener, and you should never use liquid fabric softener on infant clothes as it increases flamability)

*Microwaving your undergarments on high for 5 minutes will kill yeast (make sure thereâs no metal in the bra).

*Sunlight kills yeast.  Hang infected clothing outside to dry in the sun.

Sterilize bottle nipples or pacifiers â boil them for 20 minutes each day to kill the yeast that may be residing on them.

Wash toys that baby frequently chews on in hot, soapy water every day.

Gentian Violet is NOT a natural remedy, it just sounds like one, it is in fact a synthetic dye.

Infant frustration?

Q. When your child first started reaching for things, did he or she seem frustrated with not being able to grab them and put them in his or her mouth? My son is 4.5 months, and he just started reaching. He seems to whine and grunt when trying to grab some of his hanging toys. He's also very vocal, and he never talks this much when he's playing with me or his dad.

Answer
My son, now 8 mos, gets highly fristrated when he can't get something just out of his reach. It's normal for them to do that, it is just a natural phase. Babies love to vocalize with things around them most often. Mom and dad should mimic baby's sounds to 'talk' with him. It sounds silly, but it works. It'll bring out the kid in you too!

Air travel with infant/toddler - help!?

SamieT

I'm going to be the only adult on a 3 hour day flight with my 2 year old and my 6 month old. My 2 year old will have a seat and my 6 month old will be on my lap. Does anyone have travel tips to help me stay sane? Thanks.

Answer
Since your 2-year-old will have a seat, he will also have a carry-on allowance. I usually pack a small backpack full of new items to keep my kids busy on the plane. You can get things like Play-Doh, Matchbox cars, coloring books, sticker books, small magna-doodle toys, story books, etc. Take them out one at a time as he/she seems to be getting bored or antsy. You can also bring a portable DVD player or laptop to play a movie if he or she will wear headphones.

For the baby, I'd recommend bringing a front-carrier so that you can have your hands free to tend to your kids more easily. The baby won't need as many things to be occupied, but you could get some new small stuffed toys or teethers.

Both kids will want to be either sucking on something or drinking something during take-off/ascent and descent/landing, which will help with the pressure on the ears. It can be a cup, a bottle, a pacifier, a sucker, etc.

Bring extra diapers/wipes (more than you think you'll need) and extra changes of clothes too.

Pack some snacks because the airline offerings aren't typically things that kids like. The TSA allows you to bring juice, formula, and milk for kids - enough to get through your travel for the day. You'll have to declare it at security. You can also buy some juice or milk in the airport after you go through.

Bring a stroller for the airport - you can check it at the gate and it will be waiting for you when you get off the plane at your destination.

What are the construction aspects of the Laugh and Learn Learning Home by fisher price?

m

i have a project due next wednesday and i have searched all over google to find things like the materials used, durabilityy, safety and ease in cleaning for this product. i have spent the past 40 mins in the class now searching for this.

Another thing i need to know is if the toy will grow along with thechild'ssDevelopmentt. Most people said it will last until the child is 2 and that theydon'ttusuallyy get bored of the toy. is that good enough of an answer do you think?

thank you so much for the help!!!
thanks batralo..., i will wait 2 c if any one else posts stuff... when i said materials used, i meant by like plastic, cloth and such... if you could say anything about that, it would be EXTREMELY helpful, thank u 4 the info u have up, that was also very helpful

Answer
The Laugh and Learn Learning Home by Fisher Price is a learning toy that is designed for infants and toddlers ages 6 months to 3 years of age.

The learning aspects associated with this toy are:
Letters - alphabet with sing along radio
Numbers and counting - dropping balls for counting fun with music and spin the numbers on the house and move the dials on the clock to different numbers
Shapes and colors - with shape sorter
Opposites - up/down, on/off, open/close, day/night

The size of this toy is 29" H x 31" W x 23" D

This toy is made up of the following plastic parts:
base center with door mat, base end with roller, wall with flowerpot, wall with mailbox, base end with book, 2 rainspout halves, shaper sorter half plain, shaper sorter half with shapes, door, house number assembly, clock, 3 pieces of mail, handle half, handle half with 3 holes, door knob with hole, door knob, 4 shape sorter blocks, 3 balls.

In addition to the plastic parts, this toy also comes with a label sheet of stickers that need to be applied to the various plastic pieces.

The toy is held together with a total of 38 screws.

The toy requires 3 C sized batteries that go in a battery door with a screw closure

To clean the toy, Fisher Price recommends that you wipe the toy with a clean damp cloth with a mild soap and water solution. They tell you not to immerse the toy in water.

The small parts such as the sorting shapes, might be tempting for little kids to put in their mouths, but the pieces are too large to swallow. Key and other small parts are easy to lose. Flowers are flimsy and break off easily.

This toy was released in 2004

Where can I find a toy for an infant that lights up but, doesn't make noise?

McNulty25

We have one of those wands that has the diodes that light up & spin when you press the button but, it even makes a 'whirring' noise. My son is visually impaired & I need to know that he's responding to the light and not the noise. The only way to know for sure is if the toy doesn't make noise. TIA for your help :)

Answer
I would recommend a bear or other plush toy from the GloE line. They include polar bears, teddy bears, monkeys, etc. They light up in multiple colors, changing colors, without sounds of any kinds. Some have wands that go with them that also light up in multiple colors (the wands don't make noise either). Other than that, a Glow Worm comes to mind.

baby toy help?? easy points!!?

glubglubfi

i have a project due tomorrow, and what kind of toys should you give to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, and why?? DX please help!!! it was due yesterday so i'm already getting a 90!!!

Answer
Toys that are "age appropriate", because of choking hazards, etc.

For infants, anything that plays music or lights up is great! Think Glow-worm...

For toddlers, the Fisher Price Learn and Play Puppy is great! The toddlers (and infants) will enjoy the mixture of singing with learning.

For preschoolers, anything that they can learn and have activity to burn off excess energy, like the Fisher Price Go, Baby, Go Zebra Bouncer

Bathing Questioner for children 6 months + ?

1. When you bath you child how long do you keep them in the bath for?
2. How old are they?
3. Do you have a routine bath for them? (When do you normally bath them

Answer
Well, when he was an infant he got in, got out and went to bed. We didn't dwell to much on that part of the day. I didn't like the fact that he couldn't move about like he wanted to. Then, around 8 months we started giving him baths in the big tub and he LOVED it! When I say he LOVED it I mean he would cry getting out becuase he wanted to stay longer. We always gave him things to play with such as bathtub blocks and bubbles. He would stay in there at eight months anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes. Now. . . he's three and he LOVES being in the bath! He'll stay in for up to an hour playing and swooshing bubbles. He has a ton of bath toys and he randomly gets a toy from his toybox and puts it in with him on most nights. Last night he had a Tonka big truck in there with him. He pretends like the washcloth is a snake. Last night he had the elephant driving the big truck over the snake so he could eat it for breakfast. LOL.

I normally have him in the bath by eight. Then a small snack around nine. Lotion, cartoon of choice and sleepy sleep time. When he was 6-12 months it was always bath around seven, lotion down, cuddle (rocking) time, a bottle with soft music playing, a book and then sleepy sleep time. We got all that done in about an hour so at eight he was out for the rest of the night.

Traveling with an infant?

KS

Me and my 7 month old are traveling by plane to California from Texas, unfortunately she has just started teething as well any tips on how to make the trip as enjoyable as possible for both of us?

Answer
Just bring her favorite toy and snacks. When actually on the airplane...you just have to keep her entertained as long as possible.

My son usually fell asleep on each plane ride. But there were a couple rides where he just wanted to not be held and get into everything. Ugh!

We fly all the time. We actually did when my son was 7 months as well. That trip he slept all 4 plane rides.

Good luck!

What's the best way to clean/disinfect a stuffed toy bought at a yard sale, before giving it to my infant?

Geoff_and_

I always wash them in the washer

Is there something I can give my 4 month old to boost her immune system she is in daycare!?

red_rabbit

Answer
No, you shouldn't give vitamins or anything like that to infants of that age (except vitamin D for breastfed babies.) If you are breastfeeding her, you are giving her immunities that will help out with keeping her from getting sick, but other than that, just hope that your daycare provider takes precautions with kids who could be contagious and disinfecting toys and things like that.

BABY TOYS for younger kids(0- 4 months)?

happygoluc

I can't figure out what to get my nephew for his first Christmas. He will be 4 months! I already got him enough clothes(seeing how he is the first grandchild for both families he has clothes he will NEVER wear haha) and No diapers/diaper products(we buy it from costco so no issue). I was going to buy a baby swing because he likes to be rocked but his daddy and mommy bought it. What toys can I get for him? He will be barely four months when it's Christmas...Oh he has ALL the teething supplies needed haha.

Answer
Check out Tiny Love's website. They make developmental toys for infants. You can see what skills/milestones baby is working on at a specific age and choose toys that have those developmental goals in mind. They make *great* products. I've pasted the link for 3-6 month toys.

Lamaze also makes exceptional developmental toys.

how often can my 3 month old have infant tylonol?

Dayna

like how many days in a row? she has a tooth coming in, she is being very fussy right now..it seems like they're hurting her. She wont nurse and nothing is making her happy...i been giving it to her for a few days now, but I dont know if i should give her any today..i called her doc and he said only give her drops nothing else..because she is too young for ore gel

Answer
I have a 3.5 month old son, and I asked my doctor about this earlier this week. (He's teething too right now.)
He gets the recommended dose for his weight every 4 hours if he's in pain, and my doctor said that as long as we're not giving a larger dose or doing it before 4 hours that he didn't have an 'x' amount of days that it can happen.
Basically, the amount of painkillers in infant tylenol or mortin is very small, so I wouldn't worry about it. I would try doing other things first, though. Infant oragel, teething toy, cold washcloth, etc.

toys for infants?

leigh_ann_

I went to target today to find a toy for my 5 week old, but I dont know what kind of toy to get her. I know they say to get ones that are black and white and maybe red. I thought about getting her the floor gyms but they are $30-50, would it be good to get it for her now or should I wait until shes a little bit older? I just feel like shes bored.. i know i know dumb feeling....
another weird thing that just came to me-do you think babys are affraid of the dark? I know that they where in the dark for 9 months but now that they are out in the real world could it happen? I have noticed that when she is fussy at night and shes laying on my chest she wines a little bit but when i put on our light on low she falls asleep pretty fast.. so am I crazy or could she be affraid of the dark??

Answer
The floor gyms are actually better now then later. The reasoning for this is that once they start moving around they won't use it as much, I started using one when she was a month old and had her do her "tummy time" on it and what not. Other toys or things to buy that I would recommend is soft books because it is an easy way for you to interact with her but she can also play with it on her own. Anything else like the soft blocks, or soft rattles, etc. Babies at this age don't actually play with too much but if you want to have these things around for when she does its easier than running out and buying it all at once.

As for being scared of the dark, my daughter is just over a year now and still sleeps with a soft light on in the hall outside of her room. she never slept in the complete dark without crying!

What infant toy(s) do you think actually benefits your child developmentally?

Ivy has Tw

My guys are 4 months, and so far I think the activity gym (the mat with toys hanging overhead) is the only thing that really develops them in a way that not having it would not.

The swing, jumper, infant chairs etc. are soothing / fun, but not developmental, but the activity mat allows them to do something they couldn't yet otherwise, which is to grab and bat at toys.

Answer
I feel the same way. I have a jumper and a swing and they simply keep my son distracted (for a short period of time) when I need to be doing something. The activity mat actually engages his mind and helps him to play. It is by far his favorite place to be when I'm not holding him. I have recently tried him in a Jumperoo and he loved that thing so much he got kinda mad at me when I took him out of it because I could tell he was getting exhausted. It has lights and makes noises when he jumps and he loves light and noises. (And belly dancers for some reason, but I won't get in to that here.) (:

What is the most useful infant activity toy?

eradi-bat

Answer
Hands down the best toy for an infant is one of those activity mats. You know the ones - you put it on the floor, made of fabric, the bottom part is colorful and has different textures and things to play with and there are usually things that hang down so that if the baby is laying on her back, she can look up and reach for the dangling toys. It's a must have.

an urgent question about disinfecting my infants' toys...?

julybabygi

my daughter (4 months old) puts her toys in her mouth a lot. my little toddler cousin came over and i caught him chewing on her toys. i do not want to let her play with them until i have disinfected them. i have heard about immersion into soapy water but most of her toys are mechanical. it will ruin them! is there some product or something that i can safely disinfect her mechanical toys with such as a wipe or something? ive heard lysol is really good for toys and stuff but idk what would be good when she puts everything in her mouth. i dont need to be poisoning her or anything! so if you have any advice i would love to hear it! thanks!!! :D

Answer
I have always wondered the same thing. I found this:

http://householdtraditions.com/benefect.htm

It is a botanical disinfectant.

"Benefect® Botanical Disinfectant:

The First & Only Botanical Disinfectant in North America
Kills Over 99.99% of Bacteria, Fungus, TB and HIV
No Rinse or Wipe Required
No Warning Labels or First Aid Statements
No Mixing"

Benefect® is ideal for Hard Surface Disinfection on:

Kid's Toys & High Chair Trays
Diaper Pails & Change Tables
Countertops, Sinks & Food Preparation Surfaces
Sports Equipment
Toilet Seats
Sickrooms
Pet Areas
Garbage Cans

...& other similar surfaces where bacteria, mold and mildew or odors are a concern and where a botanical product is sensible.

I have yet to get this, but I will be soon! I give you thumbs up for not wanting to give her the toys until you disinfect them. Your cousin may not have tuberculosis, but he could have a cold or the flu and sometimes symptoms aren't noticeable right away so he "could" be contagious if he were sick. Good luck!

Edit: In the meantime (if you were to order the stuff above for later purposes), you could just wipe the toys down with a soapy rag and the wipe with a wet clean one. They say it takes a minimum of 20 seconds to kill germs with soap and
water.

Edit: Per the cdc website, germs can live from 20 min. up to 2 hours on a hard surface.

The disinfectant above is all natural. I would rather be safe than sorry, especially with an infant.

What about activity mats or something that will promote sitting up and crawling??
And also looking for toys I can attatch to her swing (since her swing does not play music or have lights- a toy with light & music thats attatchble - where can I find one??

Answer
My kids LOVED the peek-a-boo blocks from Fisher Price. It is also good for development for them to learn how to put things in and take things out. They have a shape sorter from peek-a-boo blocks. It has different shapes and each block has something new inside. There are SO many different accessories that you can get with the Peek-a-boo blocks. toysrus.com has a great way to select that type of thing. You select the age, and then you select the type of toys. You want to find cause and effect toys, early development, and sights and sounds. You can look at all those categories there, or just type whatever type of toy into a search engine and it should pull up some options.

I am studying early childhood education and I am going on placement in a centre soon. we have to make resources to take to these centre, the resources/activies are suppose to promote the use of language, so it could be anything from treasure chest to discussing different things in photo albums.

However i am stumped on what to do for infants (ages 0-16months). I am not sure how i can support or encourage the use of language. i was thinking of learning different body parts with a chart with removeble body parts but i'm sort of thinking thats a bit advanced, othrs in my class are doing mobiles so I want to do something diffferent.

please help

Answer
all younger kids learns fast when they experience it. you can do alphabets puzzles but is from foam, you can even just put words of the different toys that you have for them..just put words in all their toys.. label your classroom and let them listen to rhyming songs, and nursery songs..

I think I have too many toys but I'm not sure!
I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old, I have a small house and am running out of space, and to make things worse christmas is coming up!
How many toys do your children have?
I have 8 boxes, a huge wardrobe, chest of art supplies, toy kitchen, shelf full of books, assortment of physical toys ride ons slides etc, and a collection of dollies cot pushchairs etc, plus other toys on all surfaces.
I want to get rid of them but every time i look at a tay i think, oh no they played with that the other day etc and i cant get rid of anything

Answer
Sounds like you have alot.

My son is 15 months and we have one toy box full and a couple of push toys that dont fit in the toybox. Since its Christmas we will be going through the toybox taking out toys I know he doesnt play with anymore. As he gets older he will have to choose which old toys he wants to donate. Alot of his new toys will be in the 2 y/o age range. Most of his toys now he received as a infant so they will be going soon.

christmas ideas for my baby boy?

Danielle

im still pregnant but my baby boy will be about 2 months old for christmas. what are some god stocking stuffers and gifts for a 2 month old boy. i know he is too little to know whats going o but we have to get him at least a little something.

Answer
My son was 7 weeks old last year at Christmas and he got, well, way too much in my opinion but he was a first grandchild and nephew so there was some excitement by my family!

He got a few toys that he could use starting at 6 months but the majority of what he received was infant basics like teething toys, board books, a floor mat, a few warm sleepers - absolutely nothing that held his interest but it made for a good photo op!

Once batteries have corroded in a toy can it be fixed?

Vanessa

I got a real expensive bouncer for my 2 yr old when she was an infant and when we stored it we forgot to take the batteries out and now it's all corroded and we have another baby and we'd like to use it again but not sure if it's possible to fix. Any help???
Wow, thank you soooooooooo much!

Answer
How to Clean Battery Leakage

Choose a well ventilated area to clean the battery leakage in so that you aren't harmed by inhaling any fumes. A garage with the door open, a room with several open windows, or outside on a picnic table are all great places to clean up a battery leakage.

Step2
Put on your rubber gloves and protective eye wear before you begin to clean up the battery leakage. Do not skip this step. While it may not be the fashion statement you are looking to make, and the protective wear may seem a bit cumbersome, it is far more important to avoid harming yourself while cleaning the battery leakage than it is to look cool while doing it.

Step3
Determine whether the batteries that have leaked are alkaline or acid. It is important to know which batteries leaked in your device because an alkaline requires an acid to clean it up and an acid requires an alkaline to clean it up.

Step4
Use vinegar or lemon juice to clean up an alkaline battery leakage. You can use the toothbrush or cotton swabs to move the vinegar or lemon juice around until all of the leaked alkaline has been removed.

Step5
Use baking soda to clean up an acid battery leakage. You can use the toothbrush or cotton swabs to move the baking soda around, although the toothbrush is probably your best bet since you are working with a dry substance.

Step6
Do not introduce water into the mix, stick with the recommended materials for the appropriate type of battery leakage. When you are dealing with a battery acid or alkaline leak it is never a good idea to just start introducing random substances, even water, which may seem harmless but could be dangerous.

Step7
Use a toothbrush or cotton swap to help remove the battery leakage. A toothbrush is probably best for a leakage that is really stubborn, especially if it is an acid battery leakage that will be cleaned up with baking soda since there isn't any liquid to loosen the crud in the battery compartment. Cotton swabs are a great tool for cleaning up any lemon juice or vinegar that may be lingering around once the alkaline battery leakage has been cleaned up. You don't want to leave any moisture behind in any electronic device.

Step8
Stick to the same brand of batteries when you go to put batteries back in your electronic device so you can avoid a battery leakage that has both alkaline and battery acid.

Good Luck!

new innovative baby toys/educational products?

rosey

Any ideas of upcoming new innovative toys/educational products for infants? Now we have computer software for infants/toddlers. i.e. giggles, Pinitos123, jump start baby,etc... Do you think there is a market for baby learning products to be connected to the computer? Whether it is software or maybe even for the ipod? Give me your input!!!

Answer
We have a 10 month baby and we dont' beleive in introducing TV or computer stuffs to him at this age. We prefer him to learn the basic things.

We have a lot of home made toys for him. Gather a few plastic cups and put them up like a rising tower. He enjoys it when he can push the cups down.

Got a milk bottle and put some rice and colorful paper in it. He shake it and listen to the sound. Put other items in different bottle and he learn of other sounds.

Questions about my 10-month-old?

Jayamama

My daughter is a very determined, driven, busy little person, and I have the good fortune to be able to stay home with her. But I since she's my first, I'm not very sure of myself in certain areas. For example, because we live in a small town, there isn't much to do, so we stay at home much of the time. But she's getting to the point where she's so busy that she has to be on the move and exploring, and I think that she's getting bored. Besides going to church, the store, the park, and the library, are there other ideas for places to go? And how do I keep her entertained at home, besides playing with her toys and reading her books like I do already? She's too busy to stay still long with those sorts of things.

Another thing is her diet. I've been doing baby-led weaning, and she's still nursing a lot too. Almost every dinner, and lunch if she's not napping, I give her bits of what I'm having and she feeds herself. But I often find myself giving her easy foods for breakfast and snacks, like cheerios, goldfish, or occasionally applesauce. Are there any other ideas for quick and easy foods that are healthier? How do I help her learn to use a spoon?

The last thing is her sleep habits. She takes two great naps a day, but she's still waking up at night, sometimes every two hours. I think one or two of those times, she needs to nurse, but the rest are just for comfort. If I don't nurse her, she gets really upset, and it can take an upwards of an hour to get her back to sleep. (I always put her down awake, and she's got a good bedtime routine.) She's also really clingy during the day. Is this normal? Any ideas to change it?

Sorry it's so long. I'm just a little frustrated that it seems so many other moms have these great ideas for their kids, and I'm the type who likes the status quo. Unfortunately, babies don't stay the same, and I'm not sure I'm keeping up with her. Thank you!

Answer
It sounds like you're doing great so far. It can be overwhelming and lonely at times to be a stay-at-home parent to an infant.

Other ideas for where to go... Take walks in your neighborhood. Are there any museums or malls nearby that might have a child play area? Is there an infant or toddler storytime at your library? What about a moms' group in your community? I found a moms' group at my church where the moms got together a couple times a month to chat while the kids played. We'd meet at different places -- library, parks, McDonald's playland, museum, a room with toys at the church, etc. In addition to getting some adult contact and meeting new friends, I also was introduced to lots of great child-friendly activities in our area.

When my oldest was that age, we mostly did the same things you're doing. As she got older and learned to walk, we were able to branch out just a bit more because she could actually play on playgrounds, draw with chalk, take walks down the street, etc., so hang in there.

Other foods that are pretty easy for baby-led weaning...
-- bananas -- You'll probably have to hold the banana now, and you could even alternate bites with her so that you both share the banana.
-- Leftover veggies like peas, green beans, diced carrots, or corn -- you can even serve them cold, right from the fridge. Or buy the single serve packs of things like peas or cheesy broccoli so that you can eat them as a snack or with lunch instead of making a larger amount.
-- Pear slices
-- blueberries, strawberries, raspberries
-- grapes cut into quarters

As for learning to use a spoon, just keep letting her have a baby spoon when you feed her things like applesauce or yogurt. My oldest started "spoon feeding" one night in a restaurant when she had access to a cup of applesauce and a straw. She just kept dipping the straw in the applesauce and sucking it off. It kept her occupied for a good portion of the meal, which allowed us to eat in peace. :-) She was probably almost 1 at the time, although I really can't say for sure.

I've got nothing for you as far as sleep. My oldest started giving me 6-hour stretches around 9 months, but my other two were still nursing frequently at night up until they were almost 2. I didn't have the energy to fight it, so I just continued to bring them into my bed and nurse on and off all night as needed. I figured I was getting more sleep that way than by trying to keep putting them back in their own beds.

The clinginess is normal, and it will pass eventually. My oldest was very clingy as an infant and would even cry sometimes if little old ladies looked at her in the grocery store. She slowly started to outgrow it, and by the time she hit 3, she was confident and outgoing. She headed off to preschool (just two mornings a week at first) without a tear in her eye and has never struggled since. My younger two were pretty clingy as infants as well and have also grown into confident 7- and 5-year-olds. If you're desperate for a break, take it, and leave her with a trusted sitter, but if you're doing fine, she is, too. Babies this age weren't meant to be separated from their moms for very long, and she knows that. Go ahead and keep exposing her to new situations when possible, but don't feel like you have to leave her alone. She'll be just fine.

Hang in there!

Do you like The Movie Toy Story 3? Also, What is the Best Movie of 2010!?

$oNgL0v3r9

I just need to know

Answer
I thought Toy Story 3 was phenomenal. It was incredible and had me laughing until I cried then crying again like a baby. It had a little bit of a dark side but not too dark. It was amazing and I loved it. But I would expect nothing less from the miraculous and just plain amazing company of Pixar Animation Studios. I love them and everything that they touch. They are just- awesome.

In my opinion Toy Story 3 WAS the best movie of the year! I loved it and it seems that most everybody else did too.

Giving an infant benedryl when flying?

Dee

Answer
I fly all the time... your normal female business traveler
Only one flight out of my 1000 or so flights have I ever had a HORRIBLE child crying.

Is it really an infant? Like not walking yet? I have never seen an infant even have problems except for landing when they need a bottle to help with their ears. The squirmy 8-24 month olds are the worst, when they want to move, move, move.

As for flying make sure that there schedule is not totally messed up (as much as you can help it). Don't make them sit quietly waiting for the plane - let them play so they can be a little more quiet on the plane. Try to fly during non-peak times, so you have more chance of getting an extra seat in your row. And bring plenty of things for the little one to play with (please no electronic toys).

To answer your question, do you normally give your child benedryl?
If you don't, a plane is not the first place to try it. It does not calm all kids down (aka: it makes my nephew SCREAM).

Dose Anyone have toddler or infant toys...they wana give away?

I would NOT buy toys from the dollar store, many of them are cheaply made and contain lead, which leads to brain damage and could be fatal. Sorry I don't live near you but I thought I would throw that out!

Do you rate and review the toys and such that you buy for your baby?

Chelsea

My daughter recieved this awesome toy for her birthday and she loved it. She picked up how to play with it right away. In all the reviews I read online about it.. it said it was a waste of money because baby never got intrested. So i decided to rate the toy since there was nothing positive about it on there. I think i'm going to do it with most of her toys. Haha.

Anyway, Have you or do you rate and review your babys toys and such?

Answer
I do- especially if they are good! I want other parents to know the same.

It's funny you mentioned that though- I wrote a review after reading a review on our baby's infant bouncy seat. It's a Baby Einstein...and everyone said that after a time, the music and lights no longer played. We had that problem too and discovered it was because it was not pushed in all the way- and I mean all the way. So, that's what started me with writing a review. I also wrote a review for our SUV recently- because I love it. It's almost 1 now and it's been awesome in any kind of weather...so I guess I believe in spreading the word.

At what age is an infant no longer at risk for SIDS?

Kimberly M

Answer
SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, occurs most frequently between the second and fourth month of age. While risks decline after the sixth month, your child is still within the danger zone up until his first birthday, according the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Researchers have not been able to pinpoint one specific factor that causes SIDS, but experts agree that a combination of factors are probably to blame. These likely include genetic factors, a congenital malformation in the brain, and environmental factors.

SIDS is not caused by vomiting or vaccines. It does occur more frequently in boys than girls and in African Americans and Navajos more than other races.

There are some practices that you can implement to reduce the risks of SIDS. First Candle, formerly the National SIDS Foundation, recommends the following:

Place infants to sleep on their backs, even though they may sleep more soundly on their stomachs. Stomach- and side-sleeping raises risks.
Place infants to sleep in a baby bed with a firm mattress. There should be nothing in the bed but the babyâno covers, no pillows, no bumper pads, no positioning devices, and no toys. Soft mattresses and heavy covering are associated with the risk for SIDS.
Keep your baby's crib in your room until your infant is at least six months of age. Studies clearly show that infants are safest when their beds are close to their mothers.
Do not place your baby to sleep in an adult bed. Typical adult beds are not safe for babies. Do not fall asleep with your baby on a couch or in a chair.
Do not over-clothe your infant while she sleeps. You want to dress your baby just well enough to keep her warm without having to use a cover. Keep the room at a temperature that is comfortable for you. Overheating an infant may increase the risk for SIDS.
Avoid exposing your child to tobacco smoke. Don't have your infant in the same house or car with someone who is smoking. The greater the exposure to tobacco smoke, the greater the risk of SIDS.
If possible, breastfeed your baby. The consumption of breast milk decreases the occurrence of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, and studies show that breastfed babies have a lower SIDS rate than formula-fed babies.
Avoid exposing the infant to people with respiratory infections. Avoid crowds. Carefully clean anything that comes in contact with the baby. Have people wash their hands before holding or playing with your baby. SIDS often occurs in association with relatively minor respiratory (mild cold) and gastrointestinal infections (vomiting and diarrhea).
Offer your baby a pacifier. Some studies have shown

baby registry check list.?

FoxxyMomma

Does anyone have a really good baby registry check list? I'm having my shower in November but I'm throwing everything on the check list even if I'm going to buy it so I can just go into the store with my printed checklist and find exactly what I wanted online. [plus I use online because you can check out what has good reviews and what has bad reviews so I'll know if I'm buying something good]

I can't find a good checklist for a first time baby most have weird pages you have to navigate through, so if anyone has a good checklist for a first timer that's easy to navigate you'd be my hero if you'd help me :)

Answer
Bottles- tons of them. Even if you are breastfeeding stock up because you never know what might happen. I started out breastfeeding and had problems and had to buy tons of bottles.
High chair
Breast pads, cream
Receiving blankets- lots of them (they make great burp cloths)
Burp cloths
Wash cloths
Towels- maybe a set with two
Baby bath tub
Baby wash- Johnsons head to toe wash
Diapers
Wipes
AD Ointment or some diaper rash cream
Diaper bag
Waterproof pads (put several, you might go through a few a day)
Nightgowns
Onesies/bodysuits at least one multi pack for each size
Socks
Mittens
Grooming kit
Formula just in case something goes wrong with breastfeeding
Stroller
Car seat or get the stroller car seat combo
Extra car seat base- if you have 2 cars it comes in handy
Crib and mattress
Sheets
Swaddler blankets
Thermometer
Mylicon gas drops
Infant pain/fever reducer
Monitor
Swing
Bouncer chair
Variety of toys
Playpin

Do not register for any cute clothes. That is mainly what people buy. I am set until my child is 18 months old because all people wanted to buy were clothes.

Put everything on your registry and do not delete it after your shower if you don't get it. Put extras because you won't really know what you need until after the baby comes. I have been back to the store so many times it is sad. Also don't rush out and buy everything right after your shower. I did because I didn't know that Target and BabiesRUs send out a coupon for a percentage off everything left on your registry.

My girlfriend wants a baby at 16 with me?

Q. My 17 and my girlfriend is 16. Anytime we go out she's always looking at the babies and talking about how cute they are and how much she'd like to have a baby of her own. When she asked me what I thought I said yeah, cool. She just came straight out a few minutes ago and told me she wanted to have a baby now for sure and she wants one with me. I love her so I didn't call her crazy which is what I was thinking. I just told her to let me think about it but there's no real thinking about it. There's no possible way I can support her & a baby while working full time and being a junior in high school. I don't want to hurt her feelings but I seriously don't want a baby at 17. I want to be able to go out and party and have fun,not be stuck at home with a kid. How can I tell her no but gently but where she knows I'm serious about it?
*sorry I meant working part time and being a full time student

Answer
You both bette have really good jobs.

Pregnancy Costs
Don't forget about the delivery! It easily costs between $5,000 and $8,000 for a normal vaginal delivery, up to $12,000 for a Cesarean delivery and much more if there are complications. Even if you are covered by insurance, it may not cover all of the cost.

More on infant budgeting
If you plan to use disposable diapers, plan on spending between $1,600 and $2,300 by the time your baby is potty-trained. Expect your baby to go through at least 7 or 8 diapers a day on average, costing between $80 and $130 a month (especially in the first few months, when changes are more frequent.) Cloth diapering can be just as expensive as disposables if you use a diaper service, but if you launder them yourself, you can save money. It is estimated that cloth diapering only costs around $800 to $1,100 by the time your baby is potty-trained (without the diaper service).

For formula (up until your baby is one year old), expect to spend between $1,000 and $2,300 - depending on whether you use powder or ready-to-pour liquids. Plan on spending at least $40 a week on infant formula. You can really cut your costs dramatically by breastfeeding for a year or more.

Song names on Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Jumperoo?

LShaw

It's the mode where it continuously plays songs without words. I know "Turkey In The Straw" then there are two songs that I don't know. It follows with "Farmer in the Dell" and one similar to "Mary Had a Little Lamb". Does anybody have this jumperoo and can tell me the name of those two mystery songs? I like to sing along, like a crazy person, to make my son laugh. :) Thanks!
