Why do so many people assume that other countries need US consumers to buy their goods to thrive?

Q. Please read all of the details before answering the question and tell me what you think of my own thoughts on the matter please. Thank you.

Because of this, from what I understand, many people assume that countries will have to keep lending money to the US so that the US economy doesn't end up collapsing.

I don't buy into the idea that countries need the US. The US appears to be the consumer in this global system, consumers can be replaced though. If the US doesn't consume, someone else will, there is a ton of demand out there, even if prices have to be lowered or currencies revalued to a higher level.

Question written on March 22, 2009

A. Americans buy a whole lot of things that they don't need.

Kids received mountains of toys on Christmas and birthdays. Many parents would go to a store for regular errands, and if their child was along, they would buy a toy or two. New parents are inundated with baby products, and newly-married couples are given a lot of household goods--many of which they'll never use.

Working at a department store, I have seen parents come in with sheets of computer paper filled with a list of things that the child wants for Christmas. And that is only for one child. The parents would buy everything on that list--at least several hundred dollars worth, but sometimes several thousand dollars worth.

Wedding registries contain large lists of relatively useless items. Items like waffle irons, indoor grills, deep fryers, and fine china will rarely or never be used, but they are almost always purchased.

Baby registries contain large lists of relatively practical items, like cribs and play yards, but also contain a swing AND a bouncer, or an infant car seat AND a convertible infant to toddler car seat, or even a compact stroller AND a full-size one. And many people ignore the registries and buy mountains of baby clothes, all in newborn size, which the child will only fit into long enough to wear each outfit once or twice.

And that's just gift items. We throw out our clothing as soon as it gets a hole, even if the hole is on a seam and easily repaired. We throw out towels, sheets, and underwear the moment it gets stained, even though no one will see the stain but us. We purchase clothing that looks nice on the rack, but horrible on us and that we will never wear. We match our bedding and upholstered furniture to our curtains, walls, and carpet--so if a sofa wears out, we will go out and buy new carpet, draperies and wall paint in addition to a new sofa, loveseat, and chair set so that everything matches.

We always want the best and newest electronics. Every time someone renews their cell phone contract, they get a new cell phone, even if the old one works fine. When flat screen TV's came on the market, people flocked to buy them, even though their old tube TV's still worked fine. People line up to wait to get the newest video game system, even though they already have one that they were happy with until now.

Almost all these things are made in other countries.

We are wasteful to an extent that no one else is. This is what makes us such good consumers. And I honestly can't see people in Europe, where the homes are smaller and the environment is a bigger concern, going out and wasting as much stuff as we do, even if they have the money.

Am I just bias or is my child a prodigy?
Q. She was born June 18, 2009 so she is about 14 months, and today she made a rhythm. She has a rattle and a pin head toy and she was making a rhythm and repeating it and dancing to it. It was like (chooka = rattle) (chood= Pinhead)

Chooka Chooka Chood Chood Chood Chooka Chooka Chood Chood Chood Chooka Chooka Chood Chood Chood Chooka Chooka Chood Chood Chood Chooka Chooka Chood Chood Chood

Then when she saw me watching with my mouth open wide she stopped and smiled at me.
Opps thanks..... someone commented I made a typo her birthday is Aug. 18, 200(8) making her 14 months old.
You all are just haters, she may not be a prodigy thats a little extreme, but this is a talent not a fluke because she saw how intrigued I was at what she was doing, now she is making beats with everything.

I believe its in her blood her grandfather is a famous composer in Venezuela and her father is a musician/guitarist. She has been around music since she was in the womb, mostly instrumental rock due to her father composing guitar pieces.

I believe now that we see she has interest in it we will just support her in what makes her happy and we will see where this takes her.
You never know !!!!!!!!

But I do know still water Stagnates.

A. Ignore all the rude people. I think they may be jealous!
Yes, research shows that kids exposed to music in womb and as an infant can actually improve intelligence. This goes for reading to baby's in the womb too.

Sounds like you may have a little musician. Yes, baby's make noises but not all have rhythm. I always hear about famous singers talk about how they started singing or playing an instrument at a very young age.

I need help identifying characters that comply with Erikson's theory.?
Q. I have done most of my assignment but i don't watch alot of television and i don't have any interest in what celebs are doing with their lives. So i need help identifying a character for 7 of the 8 stages in Erikson's theory.

Here is what i have so far.
Abstract
In our portion we will give a brief description of Erikson’s Theory which will include each stage of development. Erikson’s proposed 7 key stages in the way we develop throughout our life. These stages are first, basic trust versus basic mistrust. Secondly is autonomy versus shame and doubt. Thirdly is initiative versus guilt, the fourth stage is industry versus inferiority. The fifth stage is identity versus identity confusion, sixth is intimacy versus isolation. The seventh stage is generatively versus stagnation and lastly is the eighth stage which is integrity versus despair we will also identify a character at each stage.

Behavior Across the Lifespan
Erikson’s Theory of psychosocial development is one of the best known theories of personality in psychology. Erikson believed that one’s personality develops in a series of stages one of the main elements of his psychosocial stage theory is the development of ego identity. Ego identity is the conscious sense of self that we develop through social interaction. In each stage Erikson believed that people would experience a conflict in which they can either master the quality where they would achieve a great sense of mastery or they may fail in which that individual will experience a sense of inadequacy. While discussing the different stages we will also identify a character at each stage. The eight stages include trust versus mistrust, autonomy versus shame and doubt, initiative versus guilt, industry versus inferiority, identity versus confusion, intimacy versus isolation, generatively versus stagnation, and lastly is Integrity versus despair. Everyone develops similarly by following the eight steps that we have previously mentioned while also developing into individuals as we will prove in the following essay. ("Erikson's stages of," 2010 para)

The first stage is that of trust versus mistrust which occurs between birth and one year
which is the most fundamental stage in life. Because infants are utterly dependant the development of trust is based solely on that of the child’s caregiver. This is why young children strive with provided with a predictable daily schedule. When a child develops trust they will feel secure, if they do not they may develop fear and believe that the world is inconsistent and unpredictable. The Olsen twins (Full House) can be associated with this particular stage because as infants they became stars. They took turns playing the role of Michelle Tanner on the popular television series Full House. While filling this role the two young children had to become comfortable with their new television family in order to have trust and be able to perform as needed.

Autonomy versus Shame and Doubt is the second stage in which occurs in early childhood and is focus on children developing a superior sense of personal control. Erikson believed that potty training a child leads to a feeling of control and independence because they can control their own bodily functions. Another important part of this stage is letting the child chose what they wear, the toys they play with and occasionally the food they eat. When a child masters this stage they feel very confident and if they fail they may experience a feeling of inadequacy. A character that can be associated with this stage is …..

The third stage is Initiative versus guilt which occurs during the preschool years. Children begin to assert their power and control by directing play and other social interaction. The children who master this stage feel confident and are able to lead others. But those who fail at this stage develop a sense of guilt and a lack of initiative. ("Erickon's psychosocial stages," 2010 para) An appropriate character for this stage would be …

Industry versus Inferiority occurs during the early school years between the ages of 5-11. Through interactions with other children kids build a sense of pride in their abilities they possess along with their accomplishments. Children who are encouraged and praised by parents and teachers for a job well done are more likely to be happy and strive where the ones who are not will doubt their ability to be successful. A character that can be associated with this stage is …

Identity versus Confusion occurs during adolescence when children are discovering their independence and developing their sense of self. Adolescents whom are encouraged have a higher chance of emerging from this stage feeling confident and will have a positive attitude for the future. Those who do not will be confused and will doubt the future as they may feel inadequate. The character that has been chosen for this stage is …

Intimacy
Identity versus Confusion occurs during adolescence when children are discovering their independence and developing their sense of self. Adolescents whom are encouraged have a higher chance of emerging from this stage feeling confident and will have a positive attitude for the future. Those who do not will be confused and will doubt the future as they may feel inadequate. The character that has been chosen for this stage is …

Intimacy versus Isolation is obviously geared toward early adulthood when young adults are becoming sexually active while exploring intimate relationships. Because each stage builds on what was accomplished in the previous stages it becomes more difficult for those that have not mastered the previous stages to catch up so to speak. When an individual is confident and secure in who they are and the person they are becoming they are more likely to succeed at these later stages. Erikson believed that it was crucial for people to hcommitted relationships with have

What are the steps of opening a home daycare?
Q.

A. Licensing Requirements

Opening a daycare in your home requires you to follow certain rules and procedures. These vary from state to state. Before you start, contact your state authorities. Find out what you need to do to open a daycare. You may need to complete official courses in caring for young children. Many states also require caregivers to illustrate mastery of techniques aimed at keeping young children safe, such as administration of CPR.

Safety Issues

Before you open a daycare, do a thorough inspection of your house. Child and infant safety should be your first priority. Dangling cords should be placed out of reach of children. Electrical outlets should have covers on them. Carpets should be inspected to look for any objects that a toddler might put in her mouth. All cabinets should be locked with locks that cannot be opened by a small child. Purchase baby gates to make sure that a child cannot climb stairs. Even if you don't have stairs, a baby gate is useful to keep a child in a single area. Furniture should also be given a very close look. Check for nicks in wood that could cause splinters, edges on tables or chairs that could be dangerous and cushions that have strands that could pose a choking hazard. If you have a pet, make sure it can tolerate babies and small children. If the pet poses a danger, you may have to give it up.

Organization

Proper organization will help you run the daycare better. Set aside a specific corner for feedings, another for diaper-changing and a third as a play area. If possible, devote a different room to each purpose. If not, decorate the corners to indicate their function to parents and other caregivers. Place all supplies such as child-size spoons, wipes to clean up spills and toys in each appropriate area.

Finding Clients

Once you've set up the daycare, you must find clients. Advertise in magazines devoted to parenting. Place an advertisement on a local bulletin board. Let your fellow parents know that you have openings in your daycare.

I'm pregnant, but I am not ready for a baby, What should I do mentally to be ready?
Q. Is there any specific book I should read that tells me how to take care of babies? I don't know what they are supposed to eat, or anything. I'm completely lost.

A. there are many baby books.

ask your doctor to give you a list of clubs or classes on new moms to prepare you for the birth and care of your new life.

that is also a good way to decifer if he has a good bedside manner.

you really need to get all this info before you have the baby because you need to do it right.

find what you will need to buy for the baby's first few months
example
gowns, socks, diapers (lots), undershirts, onsies, caps/mittens (most gowns have the mittens in them) so they don't scratch their faces cause the nails grow fast.
warm blankets, receiving blankets, changing pads, crib sheets, care box (brush, comb, nail clipper, nasal sucker
pacifier, baby bottles (compare which ones may be better for the baby and easier clean up for you), towels wash cloths
will you be breast feeding or using infant formula (some formulas have iron which most babies cannot digest and get terrible gas. this causes the baby to be uncomfortable and will cry if he cannot releive himself of it.

list the checkups he will need over the new few months and keep that on your fridge,

you will need to learn how to give the baby a bath.
you need to research baby toys and what ones are/have been recalled and for what reason. also cribs and car seats, swings and any other infant furniture you will be using.

you need to put his feeding schedule up to remind yourself what is next (usually this is not necessary) but its good to look at.

you need to sterlize your bottles and anything that goes into the baby's mouth. you need to buy toys that will help the baby with his eyesight and so forth
for example (baby's don't see in color so the colors won't amaze him at newborn age) buying black and white items will help his eyes get stronger due to the significant contrast.
there are many toys that will help him grow so research that too. (fisher prices website will help in this area)

you will need to know when to start the baby on cereal, then regular baby food. when to burp him during the bottle/breast feeding so he won't get to gassy or spit up so much.

I think making a chronological list from each stage of his life and then what he needs for each stage might help you get alittle control of how your going to cope.

you might want to research parent magazines to see which one has article that may help you and get a subscription to them.

go to the library and relax as you sift through some baby books and take notes or take them home and add to the list or even buy the book that you feel is best for you.

make sure you research all baby problems and diseases and what to do until you can get him to the doc/hospital, such as cradle cap, checking to make sure the baby is breathing (something I did every 10 minutes) some babys just forget to breath and you need to be aware of this so you can watch for it. I beleive it is called infant death syndrome.

it is very scary. I was aunt to at least 5 kids from the time I was twelve to the time I had my first born and I still never felt like I knew enough. but I got thru it as most of us do, you will to.

most important thing to remember is to enjoy your baby to the fullest and never put anyone before him/her.

she is totally in your care. they will be so much fun to play with and watch them grow. the funny ways they do things, and creative things that they say can be quite entertaining.

enjoy

Please help.. My 14 months old daughter is delayed, autism?

Q. My 14 months old daughter is delayed in her social skills and fine motor skills. She is not waiving, not clapping, not pointing, not self feeding. She will sometimes show where my eyes are or mouth, when I ask her, and she will look at a picture on the wall when I ask where the picture is. But she rarely pays any attention to me or anyone else. She loves to play with all her toys, but she doesn't do anything repeatedly (like pushing the same button over and over). When I talk to her or ask her something she ignores me, and continues to do what she was doing like playing with her toy or watching tv. When she watches her cartoons and I get in front of her to get her attention she completely ignores me like I'm a see-through ghost. I'm worried sick.. Has anyone had a kid who was delayed in these areas (waiving, paying attention to mommy, pointing etc), and now are older and normal? Or is she for sure has an autism. I've convinced myself that she does and can't stop panicing. I will make an apt with the neurologist tomorrow, and I was told by an Early Intervention program that she is significantly delayed in her social skills and fine motor skills such as picking up small cereal and putting them in her mouth. (she doesn't do that at all). She seems like normal happy baby to me, she loves it when I sing to her, she looks directly at me into my eyes when I sing, or when I do silly games. She loves pikaboo games and runs to me on her walker when I call her all excited. But when I talk to her most of the time ignores me. I would love to hear from someone who went through this and their kid turned out fine. Some words of encouragement also would help :( thank you so much. I am so afraid of what the neurologist would say. It seems like 100% of normal kids do all these things. If I can just find one who didn't do these things and turned out normal, I could breath just a little easier. Thanks again!
About vaccines etc.. We are on dr. Sears vaccine schedules and we haven't even gotten everything she needs. So I really don't think this could be from vaccines we are being very careful about them.

A. You are right to be concerned, but don't worry about this until you have done some homework and researched the issue. There is a wonderful web site you can visit to see the symptoms and what is being done to not only help autistic children but what can be done to prevent it.

Go to: www.childhoodshots.com

Mary Tocco has been researching vaccines for 30 years and has a volume of information on this subject. Her daughter, Rene Tocco, is the doctor that has dedicated her practice to AUTISM and that is the web site above. Many of the problems children are having today are a result of what is being done to the children in doctor's offices and the food they are eating and the lack of information on good breast feeding, etc.

Become educated, not indoctrinated.

EDIT: NO child needs ANY vaccine. It is a very well known documented fact that children who do not get vaccinated are far healthier and grow up much more healthy. Believe what you will about vaccines, but those promoting it is relying on indoctrination and distortion of the facts, not educated facts.

EDIT: Here's a wonderful article for you to read to get a better in depth understanding of why vaccines are causing many of the problems your child is experiencing.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/11/01/flu-vaccine-and-its-side-effects.aspx

Dr. Sears is just spreading the poisons over longer time between getting the poison injections. Infants and babies should NOT be receiving these injections at all. Look at the evidence to learn the truth. Pediatricians were invented to inject poisons and nothing more. The well baby visits is just an injection party, nothing more.

If you are still in doubt about this, watch Dr. Maurice Hilleman that was the Number 1 vaccine expert, researcher, and developer of over 40 popular vaccines talk about the "Bargain Basement Technology" vaccines are in this confidential interview:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edikv0zbAlU

Now watch this video showing the probity of the Bayer Pharmaceutical that makes aspirin for the world and how they view PROFIT over HEALTH:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg-52mHIjhs&feature=related

Is it no wonder the public has started to reject what these guys are promoting?

Drug companies would have you believe their technology saved the world of disease, but nothing is farther from the truth. Look at this study on small pox that drug companies tell you they eradicated:

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2000/12/31/smallpox-vaccine-part-one.aspx

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2000/12/31/smallpox-vaccine2.aspx

Babies are being damaged by these corporations that are promoting this farce. BIG MONEY is being made by them. In fact drug companies make 5 times the profit of any U.S. corporation and politicians get a huge amount of this. This is why the recent Health Care Law funnels so much money directly to them. Both Republicans and Democrats are to blame and the public is getting the booby prize. And the worst part is that children are the victims.

good luck to you

Could we afford a baby with what we have?
Q. My husband and I are madly madly in love. Were young 22 and 23 years old. But we wanted to do things young. We married at 21 and 23 and want our first Child at 23 and 25.

My husband and I agreed that I should stay at home.
In Michigan GOOD quality childcare cost about 1k a month for good care. On top of, I want to raise my child, not have a stranger do it.

Here is what we have going for us.
My husband and I own a 3 bedroom 1.5 bathroom house with about 1300 Square feet of living space.-800 dollar mortgage

Health Insurance- We have the Blue Care network-Healthy Blue.
We have a Zero deductible and only a 10 dollar Co-pay for Doctor visits and 30 co pay for emergency room visits.

My car is paid off and his car will be paid off in December of 2010. 280 a month car payment.

However we do have about 8K in student loans and credit card payments.

My husband brings home between 2700-3500 a month depending on his commission.

Advice??
I always shop Second hand. Platos closet here in michigan is My FAV store.
I bought a pair of BCBG shoes for 14 dollars.

I work with kids now but get paid penny's to what my husband makes. My husband is still young and is Climbing up the Ladder at his work. We have alot of love for each other and Praise God that when we wake up, we have another beautiful day to live in his glory!

A. You are so cute! I'm happy you are so in love!!
Oh honey you'll be more than okay to have a child. :) And let me tell you how you can save tons of money:

*Breastfeed exclusively, no bottles/pumps. As a SAHM that is easy!! And formula can cost upwards of $1200 a year!!!! Breastfed babies are also healthier overall, costing less in medical visits and prescriptions.

*Cloth diaper. You save THOUSANDS of dollars, and they can be used with future children as well. Also, there are many new modern types out there that are easy as anything, like this:
http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=1279
I switched to cloth when my daughter was 14 months, and I'm SO happy! :)

*Do baby-led weaning. Not only do you save money by offering real foods and not jarred stuff, but a baby who feeds herself eats exactly how much she needs. Purees are also completely unnecessary, since babies mash food with their gums. :)

*Buy secondhand or sale items. Our crib is convertible to a toddler bed and a double bed, and only cost $200. Our changing table is also a large dresser, and only cost $200. I've seen cribs sold for nearly $2000!! RIDICULOUS. I also found great toys, onesies, and blankets at yard sales for dirt cheap.

*Consider babywearing. A great sling or wrap costs far less than the average "travel system." It's also very beneficial for baby's physical, mental, and emotional development, not to mention allows mommy to go about her business.

*Speaking of carseats, get a convertible one. It will see your child into toddlerhood and beyond, depending on the type you buy, while you have to buy a new seat after 20 lbs if you get an infant carseat!

what is the function of globalization? and what is the problem of globalization?

Q. can you tell me a current and relevant examples for globalization today. thank you so much if you can tell me as clearly as possible about this hotly-spoken word "globalization". THANK YOU!!!!

A. In a word ,C O N T R O L ! You will hear all kinds of good things that can come of "Globalization", but deep down, control of commerce and our very individual lives are at the center of the issue. I caught a blurb on Y!A here about a proposal from France's Sarkozy about us getting in line with the rest of the European Union's currency , that we should follow suit. At this point , we have our own currency, and we are not yet quite in the cluches of U.N. /Euro control, but we are standing on a slippery slope , and I fear for our nation. The benefit to other nations of globalization is that their standard of living gets lifted. Guess what happens to ours? It falls, that's not a guess, that's a fact! Cases in point, look at the auto industry, they sent so much of the work overseas that paid well here in the U.S. ,the American real content is very low in so called "American Made" cars. Look at toy manufacturers, I THINK it was Mattel, ( correct me if I've got the wrong one) that has a setup in China making toys for export back here in the U.S. that were painted with lead paint. We got them here and had them tested for toxins, found lead paint, the manufacturer apologizes to , of all people , the CHINESE!!! WE get the back of their hand!! Let's go from there to the infant formula that sicken and killed children that was made in CHINA. They DO NOT operate under the same parameters as U.S. manufacturers do, and don't let anyone tell you they do! These people that set up shop overseas are dubiously called "American Businesses" selling out our very nation. What do you think, does globalization help our country?

infant toys and lead paint?
Q. are there any particular brands of infant toys that are made in the usa? or anywhere but China?

A. Little Tykes, I believe. However, most are from Asian countries. There are lead test kits you can buy to test items in your home. The kits start at 4 bucks. I think you can get them at hardware stores.

Wooden Toys Or Plastic Toys? Plastic From China May Contain Lead?
Q. After over 1 million recalls this year would still continue to by toys that are made in china? What do you think of wooden toys?

I have desided to buy my baby for Christmas only wooden toys. And if I buy plastic I will make sure its not from China.
Wooden toys dont have slinters they are made so well that a child can bit it and wont get splinters.

A. I'm also making a concerted effort to buy more locally-made toys, made from organic products such as wood, this Christmas. I just feel that we haven't learned all that we will in the coming months/years about plastics and how inorganic materials in children's toys can affect their health.

How to help infants in the car?

Q. We are traveling 5 hours to upstate NY this weekend with a 3 year old and a 6 month old. The 3 year old is fine in the car, but the 6 month old screams the whole time. Does anyone have any suggestions as to help this? It is not car sickness or reflux, I think it is just boredom. Thanks a million for all of your help in advance.

A. My husband and I took a trip from MA to PA (6-7 hour trip) when my daughter was 10 months old. The best way we did it was to wake her up in the middle of the night (1:00am) start driving and let her fall back to sleep in the car. Then when she woke up at 6:00 we only had an hour or two left. We stopped and had breakfast, changed her and let her play for 20-30 minutes. When we got back in the car we only had 1 hour left and she was great.

We brought books and toys and don't forget the pacifier (bring a few so when he/she throws it you have more). Plus you have an added bonus, the 3 year old can sing songs and show pictures and toys to him/her. Teach the 3 year old to make faces to make the baby smile and sing baby songs. Give him a reward for helping you! Good Luck!

What can I do for my baby who hates riding in the car?
Q. My 12 month old baby HATES riding in the car. He started in an infant-carrier style seat. We then switched him to a more comfortable rear-facing seat. Recently, we turned that same seat around to be forward facing. We've tried giving him toys, a sipee cup, putting a mirror on the seat he faces. It doesn't matter if the trip is for 5 minutes or 45 minutes. He starts screaming the second he realizes that we are putting him in his car seat. He gets so upset that he gets red splotches all over his face and he throws up. Sometimes, we can entertain him by playing peekaboo or giving him Cheerios, but this only keeps him calm for a few minutes. My mother-in-law suggested that he may have motion sickness.

Is there anything that we can do to make riding in the car less of a nightmare?
I think that Nimo2 is right. The other answers were good, but I've tried those things or variations of them and nothing seems to work. I was afraid that it was a stage that we would have to suffer through.

What I think that I'll try though is getting him to sit or play around the car seat outside of the car as was suggested (THANK YOU). Just looking at the seat makes him cry. Maybe getting him used to the seat in a happy non-car environment will help.

A. Have you tried changing carseats. Maybe he is not comfy anymore. Take the car seat in the house and let him play with it. Let him use it to watch tv and to play on. Let him play in while you are in the car, not driving down the road. If you are working outside let him play in the car , without the keys in it. Once he knows it is not something bad he will calm down. Do you have a portable DVD player? Take a movie that he has started to watch at home and move it to the car.

What should I bring when traveling/flying with an 8 month old baby?
Q. We are flying to Ohio for a week (2 flights about 2 hours each). I am packing, but want to make sure I don't forget anything. I have diapers, wipes, clothes, a few toys, etc. How many bottles should I bring? I nurse and pump everyday, but will probably mostly pump while we are there. Any other suggestions would be great!
We are only bringing two small carry on suitcases and the diaper bag because luggage costs so much.

A. I just traveled with my son who was 10 months at the time...God bless you! haha....Anyway, Things I took on the plane with me 2 hour flight plus time in the airport....Diapers, wipes, change of clothes, bib, 2 bottles, 1 can of formula, infant tylenol/motrin, orajel (hes teething pretty bad lately), Food (3 jars), spoons, snacks (cereal), sippy cup, toys (ones that don't make too much noise).

Things I brought in general for the trip....Clothes, PJs, stroller, car seat, toys, baby toiletries (soap, lotion, nail clippers, nasal aspirator, brush, diaper rash cream, baby monitors (we were staying with family, so I was able to put him down for a nap, and still go outside by the pool). Towel and washclothes, sunblock.

I bought food, formula, and diapers when I got there. My relatives also borrowed a lot of baby gear from a friend so I had things there (Pack n Play, walker, high chair).

Check your airlines policies. There usually isn't a charge for checking carseat, strollers, or bassinets (pack n play), even if the child is flying on your lap. You are also allowed to bring the diaper bag plus your carry ons...the diaper bag does not count as your carry on.

Best of luck. I hope you are not traveling alone, and will have help, my son was very good and slept the entire flight there, and if it weren't for my fiance and my mother traveling with us, I would have had a nervous break down.

What are essential/best baby items to have as a new parent? What's junk? What's invaluable? Hints? Tips?

Q. (Sorry this is so long! Many thanks in advance to those who reply!)

We are at week 34 awaiting the arrival of our Babygirl. Gifts and hand-me-downs are starting to come in that we're marking off the "need to get" list (per Babies R Us).

We still have lots we need to get, so I wanted to ask for your opinions. For all those moms and dads out there, I have attached, below, the Babies R Us "Parents Checklist." What is necessary? What is not? What is invaluable? What did you get on a whim and are eternally grateful for having? What turned out to be nothing but junk? What brands are the best (i.e., I hear that Boudreaux's "Butt Paste" is the best there is)?

I'm starting to scout out Craigslist and eBay for deals (who the heck knew breast pumps were unbelievably expensive??? At least I can get new, in box items from eBay and save a few if I watch like a hawk!). If any of you have insights that you would share, we would be very grateful. Thanks!

A. Wow that is one long list lol.

Ok well for safety all you need to beginning with is baby monitors the rest are for when they start crawling wwhich wont be until they are 6-8 months so you don't need to purchase them just now unless you want to be super prepared.

Nursing/Feeding:

Breastpump - not essential unless you want to exprees easier just to put baby on the boob though. if you are going to get one I would recommend an electric one so much quicker and easier to use.

Breast Pads - Stock up on these

Breast Cream - Definitely need this

Breastmilk Storage - again on essential if you are going to express.

Containers or Bags - I got a bag that holds two bottles but my changing bag alreayd had one integrated into it so check to make sure yours doesn't before you waste any money.

Breastfeeding Shawl - Upto you really if you want something to sort of cover yourself when feeding get one.

Nursing Pillow - I can't stand mine it is so awkward and makes it hard to hold the baby I wanted recommend these unless you are formula feeding.

Burping Cloths - get plenty of these are muslin squeares at least 10

6-12 Cloth Diapers - not necessary if you are using disposable

6 Lap Pads - not essential

6-8 Bottles for Formula - I would recommend 2x 125ml and 6x 260ml

Juice and Water:

Bottle Warmer - I never use mine I just stick it hot water to warm it up less hassle.

Bottle Sterilizer definite essential

Bottle Drying Rack - can just stick them on the draining board this isn't essential.

Bottle Brush - this will probably just come with your sterliser

Dishwasher Caddy - don't need this when you still sterlising your bottles.

Insulated Tote - either this or a bottle bag you don't need both.

Feeder for Strained Foods - you wont need this until 4-6 months

8-12 Bibs: Can never have too many

Pacifiers: Thats personal prefernce whether you want to give your baby one.

Baby Mittens: At least 4 pairs

Rattles: Optional could get one or two normally don't bother with these until they are about 3 months anyway.

Teethers: Don't need this right away again at a couple of months

Books for Parents-To-Be: Don't need these at all you can learn from other people amd familyor YA! lol

Baby Care

Nail Clippers - essential or some people bite them off

Brush and Comb - I ve not used mine yet my daughter hardly has any hair

Digital Thermometer - Always handy to have when you have a young child

Ear Thermometer - Only need one Thermometer.

First Aid Kit - Not essential you'll probably have stuff ike this already anyway

Humidifier/Vaporizer - Not necessary or essential

Diaper Pail good to have to stor your diapers in for the day before you trhow them in the trash so you don't have to be in and out the house all day.

Diaper Pail Refills - These are diaper sacks

Bath

Baby Bathtub - not essential can use sink or bath support or take baby in the bath but I find mine useful for when she is really tiny

Baby Bath Sponge - Essential

4 Hooded Bath Towels - Not essential could use a normal towel and swaddle her in it

12 Washcloths - don't need that many

Bath Toys - don't need these to start with and or optional not essential

Toiletries

All toiletries are essential except alcohol swab some people don't use shampoo to start with either as it can cause cradle cap. I just used water to start with for the first few weeks

Diapers/Formula

Need all this stuff apart from a wipe warmer not necessary.

Baby Gear:

Carseat and base if it is ISOFIX. Head support but most car seats come with this and carseat toy keeps them entertained on longer journeys and shaded to keep them protected from the sun on warmer days.

Stroller:

You can get 3 in 1 travel systems that have a carrycot, fit a carseat and seat unit for when they are older. Most will come with all the essentail like rain cover etc and you can get a toy if you want.

Entertainments/ swings:

I would recommend the fisher price cradle swing my daughter loves hers. A bouncer and play mat or gym is all you need for the first few months they sleep the majority of the time
High Chairs:

You will need a high chair when she is 6mnths +

Nursery
Cradles/Bassinets:

Cradle, Bassinet or Portable Crib

Cradle, Bassinet or Portable Crib Bedding Set

2-3 Cradle, Bassinet or Portable Crib Sheets

Bassinet Netting - you will only need this if you have it outside

Nursery Furniture

Crib
Changing Table - I never used mine but handy to have to store things on really
Dresser/Chest - optional
Glider or Upholstered Rocker - handy to have for night feeds

Mattresses:
Crib Mattress
Cradle/Bassinet Mattress
3 Crib Mattress Pads
Vinyl Mattress Cover - Need all this

Bedding/Room

Décor (separates)

Out of this the essentials you'll need are:

Crib Bedding Set (including bumper)
4-6 Fitted Crib Sheets
4-6 Blankets
4-6 Receiving Blankets
4-6 Waterproof Pads
Crib

Am I missing anything on my list of stuff to get before the baby comes?
Q. I'm seeing the father of my unborn child on Tuesday, and i've made a list of everything he will need to buy for when the baby comes and visits. Tell me if i'm forgetting something, i'm super paranoid about meeting with him!

Stuff for bringing home from the hospital:
Alcohol pads.
Nose aspirator.

Car basics:
Infant car seat.
Sunscreen for car window.

Bath supplies:
Bath towels, with hoods.
Bath toys.
Cup for rinsing and pouring.
Wash clothes.
Baby wash and shampoo.
Baby lotion.
Diaper rash cream.
Soft brush.
Infant bath/sling.

Sleeping essentials:
Crib/ moses basket.
Receiving blankets.
Sheets.
Night light.
Bedroom extras/ decorators/
(1 mattress pad, 2 crib sheets, 2 waterproof mattress pads, 2 light blankets, cradle blanket)
In case of accidents.

Clothing:
Pj's.
Onsies. (Lots!)
Socks.
Stretch suit.
Snow suit.
Hat.
Jacket.
Shoes.
(Just buy a few outfits up too nine months, i'll be packing clothes with the babe.)
Dirty clothes hamper.
Garbage for dirty diapers.

Medical supplies:
Thermometer.
Infant ibuprofen.
Teething tablets.
Nail clippers.
Cotton swabs.

Changing supplies:
Small changing pads.
Diapers.
Wipes.
Changing table/ contoured changing pad and cover that sits on top of a dresser.
Changing bag.

Feeding supplies:
Binkie.
Burp clothes. (Bibs and Rags.)
Formula.
Sterilizers.
Bottle warmers.
Lap pads.
Eventually...
Baby spoons.
Baby food.
Sippy cup.

Toys:
Bright colors and music.
Balls.
Blocks.
Chewing toys.
Stuffed toys.
Board books.
Floor quilts.

Extras:
Bounce chair.
Baby carrier.
Stroller. (Pram.)
Rocking chair.
Audio monitor.
Play pen.
And last but not least, child locks.

I wrote it onto the computer as I did on paper. Is it to demanding? I'm not expecting him to get everything on here, but he wants a list, and I surely made him one. Tell me what you think. (:
He told me that he doesn't want me to be packing a bunch of stuff with the baby. (Sense he lives five hours away) And to write down everything that i'm getting for the baby. So in other words, no I don't except him to pay for anything he doesn't want to. I'm buying all of my nessesties and he's buying his.

A. I'd remove anything from the list that won't be needed for the first 3 months to keep the list a bit neater for now. You can always get another list going later, but things like child locks aren't needed until they're closer to 1 year old.

Here's what you won't need before 3 months old:
Infant ibuprofen (not to be given to kids under 3 months)
Baby food (6 months)
Baby spoons (6 months)
Sippy cup (6-12 months)
Play pen (6 months)
Rocking chair (not necessary, and some children will insist/will prefer just being held and being walked around)
Child locks
And anything under the toys category except a blanket to toss on the floor.

If you're going with a Moses basket instead of a crib, you don't need/won't find sheets and waterproof sheets. If you're getting a crib, I suggest you get more like 4-5 sets of sheets. All you need is one stomach flu that lasts 24 hours to know why you need plenty of these things.
