Newborn in daycare?

LovinLife

I am a new mom of a 10 week old. I went back to work part time, five hours a day four days a week and I'm looking into childcare. My grandmother watches my son right now but she's 80 and has a very social life so I'm going to eventually move my son to daycare. What should I be looking for in a daycare? It scares me to think of my son being with strangers, I fear they won't care for him like his family would and he would be left to lay in a crib for five hours and cry rather than held and loved. How did you adjust to daycare? What was most important for you?
Get off your pedstals! I'm working 20 hours a week to survive. I would think providing for your child is as important as quality childcare! If I could afford to stay home I would! My son's father and mother love him dearly and WORK to provide not escape. Save your stay at home mom speeches for your bathroom mirror.

Answer
I worked in a daycare with infants for 2 1/2 years. I didn't need any experience either to get a job. Now that scares me to know just anybody would be working there. Make sure to ask about how much experience they must have to be hired. The second daycare I worked at required a year and a half experience, so I was good to go.

I would look to see if they have camera's in the room that somebody monitors. Look at the rooms to see if they look safe. Observe through a window to see how they work in the room. It's good to see the providers on the floor with the kids. If the kids are on the floor and the providers are sitting in chairs chatting with each other....that's not good at all.

Check out the food menu's to see what type of food is served. We had to follow USDA regulations and the food was very good!

You really want to see interactions between the baby's and providers. We weren't aloud to keep the baby's in the cribs if they were awake. We had an area with a soft comforter and infant toys available. We would lay the babies in that area and they were be safe from the bigger kids that walked. We would be down there with them playing.

Our room was from 6 or 9 weeks (can't remember) to 18 months. There would be providers with the infants seperated from the older ones so none of them got hurt. You don't want to see infants laying on a blanket with toddlers walking around or over them. That's scary!

Even for the almost newborns, we had a chart by ages that we had to follow daily for activities.

Returning to school, newborn in daycare?

Q. My baby girl will be 4 weeks old wednesday and sadly i have to go back to school monday. I'm a senior and my school has a daycare for young women like myself.

She is still so young and i don't know what to put in a diaper bag. I will be able to come see her during class changes, and at lunch. But all in all she will be there for about 8 hours a day.

What would you put in a diaper bag? also can you give numbers like ex: 6 diapers, 2 onesies etc.

Thank you

Answer
At 4 weeks I would put in the following. More is better I always say:

10 diapers,
1 Diaper Rash Cream,
1 box of wipes
1 Pacifier,
2 Onsies (In case of accident),
favorite toys maybe 2?,
6 bottles with your milk or formula (6 feedings, just in case)
Burp Rags 2,
1 Thermometer,
Infant Drops Tylenol with instructions for use (if she gets sick)
1 Blanket

That should do it! If you have been keeping count of her feedings diaper changes etc, I would always do a few more of each, just in case. :)

Best/favourite toys from newborn - 6 months?

Bogan Mum

Im expecting my second in november. A girl. For some reason i can not find any of my sons toys! They must be somewhere but i cant find them. So i might just buy a few. So im just wondering what toys did you baby love and what ones do you think are the best?

Also with those activity mat things. Where you have the colourful mat and then the bars with hanging toys toys, are there any special things to look for that would make one better than another? My son never had one so i dont know what to look for in one and i know if i ask in the store they will talk me into the most expensive one, lol

Answer
I went through a lot of activity mats before I got a good one. I took back 3 of them because they held no interest and/or the music was so bad I couldn't stand it. Here is the one I kept http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2744546
It cost more than most but is worth the extra money because its so versatile. You can use it as a travel bed or nap mat and it will keep your infant contained until they are crawling. The important thing with the mat is to get a good musical light up toy on it. This one has a lady bug that is just mesmerizing to babies. We would attach it to the car, crib, stroller, and he never got sick of it.

Other than that my kid's favorite toys at 6 months were ones that had lights and music and were easy to activate and small rattles and other noisemakers. He also loved cloth books that crinkled and toys with mirrors.

To mothers of infants 6-12 months old i need particapents for school please?

Here are some questions that i wish you would be willing to answer about your infant. Just explain if you agree or not. Also if you could put what age your child was.

Thanks in advance

·Sits unaided- spends more time in upright position
·May be able to crawl
·May be able to climb stairs
·Develops eye-hand coordination
·Prefers primary caregivers
·May cry when strangers approach
·Commonly exhibits anxiety when parent or caregiver leaves
·Pats own reflection in the mirror
·May push away things not wanted (e.g., bottle, toys)
·Begins to âplayâ with adults
·Babbles to himself or herself
·Puts everything in mouth
·Solves simple problems (e.g., will move obstacles aside to reach object)
·Transfers from hand to hand
·Responds to changes in environment and is able to repeat actions that cause change (e.g., sound of rattle)
·Drops objects repeatedly
·Fascinated with small objects
·Begins to respond to words

These are three theories. Please tell me which on u agree withand why

Freudâs first stage of psychosexual development is the oral stage, which lasts from birth to about 15 months. In this stage, the id, which contains all the basic needs and feelings, is dominant. The ego, the rational part of the mind, is under formation due to the development of body image and delay of gratification. Body image is developed as the infant realizes that the body is distinct from the outer world. The infant also gradually realizes that gratification is not immediate and that it has to produce certain behaviors to initiate actions that lead to gratification. The key experience in this stage is weaning, which leads to the childâs first feeling of loss, and the babyâs awareness of self. Success during this stage leads to the formation of independence and trust, whereas too much or too little gratification can lead to an immature or passive personality.

Erick Ericksonâs theory states that children from 0-12 months of age are in stage one of psychosocial development. This stage is called the oral sensory stage. Erickson believes that neonates at this stage can experience Trust or Mistrust. Trust meaning infants live through and love through their mouths. In the trust stage parents will respond to the infants needs with consistency and continuity, infants believe the world is a safe place. Mistrust can occur with parents who are overly protective; child will be overly trusting and gullible. Child cannot believe that anyone would harm them

Piaget is best known for his cognitive development theory. The first scheme of his theory is the Sensorimotor and this scheme is divided into four different stages 0-12 months. During this scheme Piaget believes that infants develop their primary circular reactions such as sucking, staring, listening, ad grasping objects during the first six months. From 6-12 months Piaget has called this stage the secondary circular reactions. This is where the infant is more aware of objects and people. The infant will also respond to the object or person.

Answer
Which I agree with and why? I believe that all three have truth to them and all are valid. As a general rule I tend to agree more with Piaget's theories (for infants as well as older children). His theory seems to be the most balanced and insightful with out trying to impose any other theory on top of it. Like I said, though, I do believe that all three views contain truth.

Freud is correct that too much or too little gratification can lead to an immature or passive personality, and that the id is the primary driving force for an infant. Freud is almost always, especially in this case, incorrect about a development of body image and the focus of the child being just on gratification. Since all of Freud's theories stem from an idea of gratification, though, it makes sense for him that he says this.

Erickson is correct that infants can and do experience trust and mistrust. Mistrust also occurs, however, when an infant's needs are not met (example: feeding on a schedule instead of demand, CIO).

Piaget's theory is focused primarily on fact, not in interpreting those facts, and he is correct.

Is it necessary (or worth it) to by an infant walker?

Maryam

My nine month old has taken her first steps (she can walk for about 3 steps on her own).
I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to get her the Activity Walker.
Is it a good investment?
Will it help her learn to walk?

I'm just worried that it'll be an extra item to clutter the house.
I don't mean the ones that a baby sits in. I got one of those as a gift and I hate it. I mean the push along ones.

Answer
Get a push and ride toy.

My guys LOVED walking around with theirs. And once they hit 18 months or so, they can ride them for another year until they are ready for a tricycle!

Push and ride toys are worth it. And it is 2 toys in 1. Both pretty important and well loved toys.

What kind of toys work best? Which do you recommend?

Q. Impressive Carriegr...lol
Thanks Salreyjr, I'll have to try your toy.

Why not to use a walker?

rivergirl9

I've just read this........ "Do not use an infant walker at any age. The walkers are dangerous and do not help your baby's motor development".

I don't understand this.......we use a walker for our 4 month old. He loves the toys on it and he's touching the floor and moving himself backwards. My Mom used a walker for me and I was crawling at 6 months and walking at 8 months.
Thanks for all the responses! We don't use it as a babysitter. He'll only stay in it about 15-20 mins. and then he's bored and wants out. I mainly use it in the kitchen when I'm cooking dinner and can't hold him. And he's right there with me.....no stairs. No hazards. He can't leave the kitchen as the next room is carpeted and it won't roll on the carpet. But he loves pushing the buttons and seeing the lights and hearing the noises. For now, I think it's good for him.
I didn't mean that the walker helped me learn to walk.......I meant that it obviously didn't hinder me from walking.

Answer
I'm pretty sure the whole "walkers are dangerous" thing is meant for the parents who think it's okay to keep a baby in a Bumbo chair on top of a table, unsupervised.
It's like "caution: may contain hot liquid" on coffee cups or "may contain nuts" on Peanut M&M packages.

If you've babyproofed the area appropriately, always have an eye on your child, don't leave them in there for extended periods and use common sense all around, walkers can be a safe fun time for your baby.

Any infant toy recommendations?

alexis7310

I have a 6 month old daughter and I just recently began sitting for a 5 1/2 month old girl also.
I have all the big stuff (swing, jumparoo', entertainer, etc...) and lots of rattles, balls, stuffed animals...but am looking for other toys that might keep their interest longer and help them learn as well.

Any recommendations/links would be helpful!

Answer
I have an in-home daycare...currently I have 4 infants that range from 4 months to 11 months, here are the favorites:

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=31376&pcat=bubrilliant
The 6 months olds can close them easily, around 10 months they learn to open them also.

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30446&pcat=bulnl
This is an expensive one but well worth the investment in my opinion...it keeps ages 6 months all the way to 4 years old occupied

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30446&pcat=bulnl
Another big one, but it's great for kids around 6-10 months learning how to put things into other things, plus the balls themselves are entertainment :)

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=33177&pcat=bugym
Great for crawlers, fun to chase :)

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30444&pcat=bulnl
Pretty much any type of activity table is a must once they hit around 6-7 months, they are great for learning to stand and play

Well I could go on and on...I have a zillion toys and the kids love most of them...if you'd like more ideas let me know, I'd be happy to help!

Toys for infant?

cj2004

I need some ideas on toys for my son who is 4 1/2 months old. I stay at home with him and he gets lots of attention. But there are moments I need to do something. Like right now I've been trying to get ready to go to the store and he's just whining. He's in his exersaucer with a baby video in. Nothing keeps his attention for any length of time, even a few minutes. I know part of it is his age. Is there anything that has worked for anyone or am I just going to have to deal until he learns to play better with age (and when does that happen)?

Answer
Get the Baby Einstein Baby Mozart, Beethoven, etc. DVD or videos. My daughter is now 8 months, and she STILL will sit there for at least an hour and watch the pictures and listen to the music. It's AMAZING how much she loves it.

Also, LAMAZE toys are terrific, especially for children your sons age that are starting to play with toys more with their hands. They are very colorful, and normally make some sort of noise. You can get them at places like Babies R Us, Kohls, Toys R Us, etc.

Also, I got a vibrating rocker chair from Fischer Price that has a detachable toy arch. It has a cow/farm theme. She has loved that chair pretty much since birth. She naps in it, plays in it, and it's wonderful!!!

Finally, anything with a mirror in it. Look for activing chairs or gyms that have mirrored things on them. My baby now likes to have conversations with herself! lol!

Good luck!

What fine motor skills do 5 month old infants usually have?

Tiffany

Answer
This developmental timeline demonstrates typical development of infant fine motor skills:
Newborn -1 month: regards objects indirect line of sight; follows moving object to midline, hands fisted, arm movements jerky, movements may be purposeful or random.
2-3 months: can see further distances, hands open more, visually follows through 180 degrees, grasp is reflexive, uses palmar grasp.
3-5 months: grasps and releases toys, uses ulnar-palmar grasp.

What's next to come:
6-7 months: approaches objects with one hand, arm in neutral when approaching toy, radial-palmar grasp,"rakes" with fingers to pick up small objects, voluntary release to transfer objects between hands.
8-9 months: develops active supination, radial-digital grasp develops, uses inferior pincer grasp, extends wrist actively, points with index finger, pokes with index finer, release of objects is more refined, takes objects out of container.

Keep in mind, this is just a basic developmental guideline, some children may meet these milestones quicker than others who may take a little longer :)

What toys are appropriate for the first year?

weirdiscom

What toys -- if any -- are appropriate for infants? Do infants really play with toys or is it more a matter of peek-a-boo, etc. All the "toys" that I see for babies seem to be either teething items or "clutch" toys (not sure if these do anything more than just give baby something to hold). Seems like you wouldn't need a special toy for that. Any thoughts?

Answer
My son never likeed any of those infant toys. He did use the doorway bouncer, walker, exersaucer quite a bit. Also a baby gym, board books and that lullaby seahorse thing. Also there is this turtle that puts stars on the ceiling... Turtle star night light

Infant daughter and car rides?

David S

As the holidays get closer, we are going to be traveling with our infant daughter to my wife's parents' house for Thanksgiving. My wife will be going up a few days before me to help her mother cook. It is about a 6 hour drive. This year we have a new daughter. She hates riding in the back seat alone and screams loudly because of it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get our little angel better at riding in the car?

Thanks

Answer
My daughter was 7 months when we went on vacation, which was 20 hours away. What we did was keep her up the day before so she would sleep and then we got 3 toys she only saw in the store then gave them to her one at a time to play with. That held her over for hours. It also depends on the age. sing to her my daughter loves music so we did that too. Also having some one in back and play little games with her and just smiling so she knows she is not alone would be good for her not to get bored. We did all this and she did a great job the way there and home. :) good luck!!

Would you please give some tips on how to babysit infants?

mightymous

I need a speach ready on it in four hours... Thank you.
Thank you Skivi... You have helped me the most. I cannot rate yours as a "best answer" yet.

Answer
the most important thing is to keep them busy. when small kids have got your full attention they tend not to misbehave. turn the tv off, get their favourite toys out on the floor and play whatever games they are interested in.

when it is getting close to bed time calm it down a little with a book or a bottle of milk (depending on age). don't ever make it a punishment to go to bed early as this will make it more difficult to get them to sleep the next time you babysit.

get kids involved in everything you do, don't spend time on the phone or doing your own thing as accidents happen when you are distracted. if you are making food, let them help.

you have been left in charge of somebody elses child and that is a huge responsibility. for the time you are there, make sure you are devoted to the childs needs, ie games, food, changing them etc.

when the child is asleep, check on them every half hour or so, if the parent calls to see if everything is ok, they will be put at ease if you can tell them when you last made sure.

finally, don't forget the parents, it's not always easy for mums and dads to leave their little ones, no matter how well they know you. if you are doing your job right, every time you turn up to babysit the child will be delighted to see you, this is the best gift a parent could have when it comes to childcare.

p.s. don't be upset or put off if the child cries when the parents leave, this is perfectly natural. take it in your stride, tell the parents that everything will be ok, try to distract the child with a toy or game and let the parents tiptoe out then. make sure you have contact numbers and emergency numbers to hand and a first aid course is invaluable to anyone around children.

Can dog toys cause cancer?

Minty

I'm thinking lately about the three dogs I've had when I was growing up that each died to cancer.

I was looking at the toys I get my puppy and I was thinking that there's no way the dog toys could be sold to infants because of the dyes and chemicals in some of the fabrics (as far as fuzzy squeaky toys) and even tennis balls.

Does anyone know if that's a logical connection? I'm sure that my puppy ingests some particles from her toys each time she plays with them. Couldn't that accumulate in her system and somehow be carcinogenic?

Also, does anyone know a way I can prevent cancer in my dog? She's 1 year old and I don't want to do something that harms her without knowing it.

Answer
Yes, if certain amounts are ingested they can cause cancer and liver problems. I recommend reading a little more about it here: http://www.thewholedog.org/id66.html

What is the youngest age recorded that an infant was walking?

Angel P

Im curious as to the youngest age a baby can walk
i cant find any info about it on the web.
Do you know?
If so, where did you find the answer??
thanks

Answer
The earliest I have seen really walking (able to walk several steps unassisted) is 7 months. I think most moms of super-early walkers woud have babies at least 7 months before they would be able to walk across a room. I have 3 kids...the oldest girl walked several steps at 8.5 months, the middle girl at 7.5 months, the youngest boy at 11 months (I swore he would never walk...lol...after my early girls!)

Oh - and never push a baby to learn to walk. My girls were never pushed or taught...but DH and I were both early walkers so they come by in naturally. Children that are taught/pushed into learning to walk before they are naturally pulling up and able to push toys around...usually end up with problems. It isn't worth it just to say your baby was a young walker...by they time they are 1 1/2 you would never know which babies were early walkers and which ones weren't so it really makes no difference - let them develop on their pace.

when should my infant start walking?

Matt

My baby girl is 12 months old and shows no interest in walking. She has hit every other milestone early but refuses to walk. she started crawling at six months and pulling up at seven. She will walk around furniture if she can hold onto it, but will not stand without holding on to something. I was just wondering when typical babies start walking because two babies that we know are b oth two weeks younger but already are walking. She can walk if she is pushing one of her toys that has wheels. is there anything we need to do as parents to help her or just let her figure it out on her own. When we try to get hr to walk to us she lifts her feet or crawls. Yes this is our first child......

Answer
Congratulations on having a beautiful..and healthy baby girl! 18 months is the "developmental cutoff" by which a child should start walking. That means crawling, scooting, or just wiggling until then is perfectly fine! You don't even need to "teach" walking-just love her up and make her feel special exactly the way she is. Stay away from walkers, too-they can provide her with more mobility than she's ready for and allow her to get to places (the tops of staircases, for example) that might be dangerous. You should know there's some evidence to support that late crawlers (kids who crawl until 18 months) are better readers later on in school. Something to do with motor skills being really developed. Anyway, don't worry. She's just fine!!!

What is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome?

Abbie

Answer
Searching for Answers
As the name implies, SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant who is younger than 1 year old. It is a frightening prospect because it can strike without warning, usually in a seemingly healthy infant. Most SIDS deaths are associated with sleep (hence the common reference to "crib death"), and infants who die of SIDS show no signs of suffering.

While most conditions or diseases usually are diagnosed by the presence of specific symptoms, most SIDS diagnoses come only after all other possible causes of death have been ruled out through a review of the infant's medical history and environment. This review helps distinguish true SIDS deaths from those resulting from accidents, abuse, and previously undiagnosed conditions, such as cardiac or metabolic disorders.

When considering which babies could be most at risk, no single risk factor is likely to be sufficient to cause a SIDS death. Rather, several risk factors combined may contribute to cause an at-risk infant to die of SIDS.

Most deaths due to SIDS occur between 2 and 4 months of age, and incidence increases during cold weather. African-American infants are twice as likely and Native American infants are about three times more likely to die of SIDS than caucasian infants. More boys than girls fall victim to SIDS.

Other potential risk factors include:

smoking, drinking, or drug use during pregnancy
poor prenatal care
prematurity or low birth-weight
mothers younger than 20
smoke exposure following birth
overheating from excessive sleepwear and bedding
stomach sleeping
Stomach sleeping. Foremost among these risk factors is stomach sleeping. Numerous studies have found a higher incidence of SIDS among babies placed on their stomachs to sleep than among those sleeping on their backs or sides. Some researchers have hypothesized that stomach sleeping puts pressure on a child's jaw, therefore narrowing the airway and hampering breathing.

Another theory is that stomach sleeping can increase an infant's risk of "rebreathing" his or her own exhaled air, particularly if the infant is sleeping on a soft mattress or with bedding, stuffed toys, or a pillow near the face. In that scenario, the soft surface could create a small enclosure around the baby's mouth and trap exhaled air. As the baby breathes exhaled air, the oxygen level in the body drops and carbon dioxide accumulates. Eventually, this lack of oxygen could contribute to SIDS.

Also, infants who succumb to SIDS may have an abnormality in the arcuate nucleus, a part of the brain that may help control breathing and awakening during sleep. If a baby is breathing stale air and not getting enough oxygen, the brain usually triggers the baby to wake up and cry. That movement changes the breathing and heart rate, making up for the lack of oxygen. But a problem with the arcuate nucleus could deprive the baby of this involuntary reaction and put him or her at greater risk for SIDS.

Infant home daycare center?

I'd like to start watching infants/toddlers in my home. Max number of kids-- 3. I'd only except kids aged 0-2. It'd be in my home. I'm experienced with references and child/infant CPR/First Aid certified. I live in Ft. Hood Tx. How much should I charge per infant? And what kinds of equipment should I have on hand before I even advertise? Thanks in advance
It's a military town so most likely 5:30 am to 5:30 or 6, sometimes later in the evenings. Any activities for babies?

Answer
I have been a licensed child care provider in my home in Michigan for 20 years. The first thing you should do is check with your state to see what licensing requirements are in place for caring for unrelated children in your home. In Michigan, if you care for unrelated children in your home on a regular basis you must be licensed by the state which is overseen by the Department of Human Services. For us, babies under the age of 18 months are considered infants and one care giver may only have 2 children in this age group at any one time. The fee you charge is going to depend a lot on what your area can support. Also, will you want only full-time families or will you accept part-time as well? Each child care home and center in our state is free to set their own rates. Some charge by the hour, some by the day or 1/2 day, some by the week. I currently only provide part-time care and I charge by the hour since my families' schedules are flexible and changeable. I charge $3/hour/child, which in our county is on the low end of the fee scale. A child care center I know charges $54/day and $30/half-day for infants. Another family home provider I know charges $100/week. Basic large equipment pieces you should have include at least one porta-crib/pack-n-play and a high chair. A double/twin stroller is nice for walks and getting outside daily. An infant swing, an exercise seat, and a bouncer seat are also nice to have. Age appropriate toys that are easily washed/sanitized, such as teething rings and rattles are easy to pick up at dollar stores and yard sales or on sale at places like K-Mart and Target. I provide wipes plus I keep extra diapers on hand. After a child turns 1 I provide all food and beverages. Prior to age 1 parents bring formula/breast milk and baby food. A play mat or a colorful quilt for babies to use for floor play and "tummy time" is helpful. Lots of board books, some children's music CD's, and a couple children's DVD's are good for some quiet time. I have sippy cups, bowls, plates, silverware, and bibs for everyone. For infants, I always have parents bring to leave at my house an extra bottle, pacifier, can of formula, and any other item specific to their child's needs (such as diaper rash cream) that may inadvertently be forgotten in the diaper bag while getting ready on a hectic morning. I keep extra sweat pants and t-shirts handy in various sizes for accidents. I also have a crib sheet and a blanket for each child since they share the cribs. I have a changing table in my bathroom that is very useful. I have one shelf in my hall closet where I keep all items for daycare plus a shelf and a cupboard in my kitchen with food and dishes plus all my paper work related to daycare. I have information cards, permission slips, and a notebook to keep track of who is in care on which days and during which times. I also keep receipts and keep track of mileage for specific daycare trips such as grocery shopping, banking, training and classes, plus the occassional picking up and dropping off of children. I don't do field trips. Look in your phone book in the yellow pages under child care services to see if you have a Child Care Referral Service in your area. They can be a resource to you in beginning a child care business.

How to disinfect infants toys?

Suri

I have an underground storage space where I live in Italy. It's quite damp and very dusty there. I've stored toys there from when my kids were little.I'd like to pass on these toys to my grandchildren. The toys have been there for probably 17 years. Is there a way of safely disinfecting the infant toys that will go into baby's mouth or should i throw them out? They were stored in a closed bag and then in a box. Most are hard plastic ,but a couple are stuffed.

Answer
You can definitely disinfect the toys. You just need to get a surface wipe (they have them at most supermarkets) get a surface wipe and wipe the toys clean. If they were in closed bags, they should be fine with a little bit of cleaning. Give them to your grandchildren after you clean them, they'll love them!

Once batteries have corroded in a toy can it be fixed?

Vanessa

I got a real expensive bouncer for my 2 yr old when she was an infant and when we stored it we forgot to take the batteries out and now it's all corroded and we have another baby and we'd like to use it again but not sure if it's possible to fix. Any help???
Wow, thank you soooooooooo much!

Answer
How to Clean Battery Leakage

Choose a well ventilated area to clean the battery leakage in so that you aren't harmed by inhaling any fumes. A garage with the door open, a room with several open windows, or outside on a picnic table are all great places to clean up a battery leakage.

Step2
Put on your rubber gloves and protective eye wear before you begin to clean up the battery leakage. Do not skip this step. While it may not be the fashion statement you are looking to make, and the protective wear may seem a bit cumbersome, it is far more important to avoid harming yourself while cleaning the battery leakage than it is to look cool while doing it.

Step3
Determine whether the batteries that have leaked are alkaline or acid. It is important to know which batteries leaked in your device because an alkaline requires an acid to clean it up and an acid requires an alkaline to clean it up.

Step4
Use vinegar or lemon juice to clean up an alkaline battery leakage. You can use the toothbrush or cotton swabs to move the vinegar or lemon juice around until all of the leaked alkaline has been removed.

Step5
Use baking soda to clean up an acid battery leakage. You can use the toothbrush or cotton swabs to move the baking soda around, although the toothbrush is probably your best bet since you are working with a dry substance.

Step6
Do not introduce water into the mix, stick with the recommended materials for the appropriate type of battery leakage. When you are dealing with a battery acid or alkaline leak it is never a good idea to just start introducing random substances, even water, which may seem harmless but could be dangerous.

Step7
Use a toothbrush or cotton swap to help remove the battery leakage. A toothbrush is probably best for a leakage that is really stubborn, especially if it is an acid battery leakage that will be cleaned up with baking soda since there isn't any liquid to loosen the crud in the battery compartment. Cotton swabs are a great tool for cleaning up any lemon juice or vinegar that may be lingering around once the alkaline battery leakage has been cleaned up. You don't want to leave any moisture behind in any electronic device.

Step8
Stick to the same brand of batteries when you go to put batteries back in your electronic device so you can avoid a battery leakage that has both alkaline and battery acid.

Good Luck!

Does anyone know how to make toys for cocktails ?

Answer
Cheap, with stuff you have at home? Some Rope and some empty toilet paper rolls. Any plastic toys or leftover infant rattles and toys make good bird toys. You can use popsicle sticks, fleece or leftover fabrics to tie into knots, pieces of branch from a tree with the bark peeled off. Lots of things around the house make great toys! Take soda bottle plastic caps, and poke holes through them, string them on a rope making knots in between each one. Add some strips of fabric tied in knots between the soda caps.

If you want to get really creative, go to a good bird store, here in NJ I go to Paterson Bird Store, but you can buy the parts on eBay as well. Put in Bird Toy Parts in the search area.

You can get leather rope, Paulie Rope, or plastic chain. You can get wooden beads, plastic small toys, bells, dice, fleece and more to make toys with. Its nice to learn to do it yourself, because a lot of times the birds destroy only part of the toy and you can use the rest to make another toy.

Here is a great website for making toys for your bird.

How do you help your infant learn to self soothe?

gc525

Answer
When my son showed interested in his fish crib toy, we made it his sleep soother.

Sometimes it can be a gradual process. Just dont try to rush it or it will never work.

they way we did it was:

put him to sleep like we normally did. After putting him down, we turned on the fish ( its the ocean wonder one) for a few cycles during the night.
the next night, we put him now asleep but still awake a bit and did it again.
the third night we put him down as he was falling asleep and turned it on. he put himself right to sleep.

now we just put him down when he starts to try and snuggle into my arm and he watches it for a bit then goes to sleep. we do the same for naptime. worked very well and took only a week.

good luck!

Why do all parents think their kids are smart?

xfileaddic

Truth is: kids are stupid. Only about 1 in a million is actually VERY intelligent. Odds are your child is not going to grow up to be the next President, or a CEO, or a Doctor, or a Lawyer. Odds are they are going to be run of the mill hard working American slaves like the rest of the people living in America. To those of you who believe your child is SOO smart, do you believe you are the World's Greatest Mom or World's Greatest Dad like it says on your coffee cups? You are not the Worlds Greatest anything. You are just another regular plain old parent.

Answer
Actually I know what you mean...

But - my IQ is well over 140 and my children were all pretty much band geeks, Latin Award winners, Math Award winners, AP/Honors students and even the younger ones are in GT. I've got three in college at major universities right now (majors are: Administration of Criminal Justice, History/will Major in Education, and music Education)

The only one of the seven of them that's not a fair nickel near genius is my 14 year old who's autistic.

However... when I recently remarried and inherited what I'm told is a fairly "normal" teenager, I was stunned at how "slow" she appeared to me. When the rest of the kids are sitting around the table at dinner bantering some historical, math, music thing about, she just sits there, deer in headlights, like a fly could fly into her mouth.

She's capable... she just has to work harder to make up for the lack of natural intelligence.

One of my "most genius" kids did 2 1/2 years at a major university, first as a math major, then as a philosophy major, then burned his brain out on drugs and alcohol. How smart was that? Now he works in the warehouse of a retail toy store. His older brother who was never quite as "smart" in school is almost done with his degree, works for a major retail chain as a store director and makes enough money already that he drives a nice car and owns a huge home in a nearby town.

I hate Mother's Day. I don't think I'm the world's greatest anything. I struggle every day to do the best I can at parenting and many days I fall short. But... I keep trying and they're turning out okay for the most part. So... "smart" is what you make of what you have. True intelligence is being able and willing to access information and then using it to the best of your ability in every way. You don't have to know it all. You just need to want it all.

Odds are my children will grow up to be:

1) a Criminologist for the FBI
2) a retail worker who will struggle his whole life
3) a History teacher at the local community college
4) a Band instructor at the local high school
5) an autistic adult who will live in a group home/supported setting
6) a Vet Tech (God-willing, this is what the stepdaughter wants to do
7) an Attorney or Archaeologist (the 12 year old is undecided)
8) whatever a 10 year old videogamer and chess genius decides for himself

I'm not regular or plain as a parent. I'm strict, I have high expectations and I do not spoil them. They work, they earn, they achieve, they learn. Apparently this is no longer "normal."

I am a bit curious as to why you seem a bit bitter. Friends with kids and lots of pictures/bragging rights perhaps. If you become a parent, you'll understand why all parents want to believe their children are so smart. It's like thinking you have the coolest car or the hottest girlfriend. Someday you'll look into the face of an infant and want to jump up onto the roof and tell the world "Look what I did!!! I made this beautiful baby!!!!" and then you'll totally get it :)

Nursery of child minder ?

Neilsbaby

I am going back to work full time after my baby is born. When he/she is 6months old I will need fulll time child care. What are the pros and cons of each ? Please share your experiences and why you would finally chose the place you did !

Answer
I don't know what your definition of child minder or nursery is but I use either a In-home daycare: a home where 10-20 children are watch by two or three adults, or a Childcare Center; each age level has a different room with one teacher, infant rooms have three or four teachers. Hopefully this helps you out.

If you are talking about a child minder being a nanny or babysitter...this could be a good idea if you know the person and can trust them fully, the child would not get a lot of socializing which I have found to be a VERY important part of my daughters life(she was very distructive, loud, didn't share with other kids, bullied kids...now a lot of that has changed thanks to our provider)...she can have FRIENDS to talk about and play with. You could arrange for special play dates with other children in your neighborhood or community that could help in the socializing...this may cost more? What would you do for back-up if your nanny gets sick?

I tried two types of child care, the one I like best is an in home preschool when I was in high school I had a chance to visit daycares and see how they ran their centers and how the children were treated and so on and then had to right a report...I put my child in an in-home daycare because I knew she was safe the center was right next to the school she will be going to next year, it is in our area that we plan to live, this way she has a strong relationship with at least one person from daycare. My mom was an in-home center also...they are a little cheaper and a little bit more homey. I tried New Horizon and the teacher was not as happy to be there and play with the kids as I wanted her to be. The kids just seemed to do as they pleased and run around.

Thing to consider when chooseing a daycare are:
-how many adults are there at all times...the ratio is like 1:10
-how many babies are there? 1:2 ratio
-what is there backround
-any schooling
-visiting? can you visit whenever you want?
-how does your provider inform you of what is going on? calendars, newsletter, emails?
-any awards? credits from the county
-what do other parents say about this provider
-how long have they been doing childcare?
-how do you feel when you arrive?
-do they have saftey undercontrol? gates on stairs? locks on cupboards, cleaning supplies up high, medication up high?
-how does your child interact with the provider?
-ask the provider if they have had any complaints? call and ask the county for reports on this provider
-do they keep their schedule the same everyday? other than field trips or special occasions.
-do they have diversity with in the center?
-how do they conduct free play?
-how often are toys cleaned? carpets? sanitized?
-what if your child is sick, what is their policy
-what happens when you take a vacation or have a day off? Is there a price difference?
-Do they have back-up provider for illnesses?
-How do they dicepline children?
all of these things should be available to you at anytime

Visit at least 10 different homes before you decide...you can start now...that would be best finding places for infants is hard because you can not have a lot of them in one place.

Ask the same questions for each and keep a list with you to record your findings. Make sure you are watching the children, how they interact with each other and the providers.

A center that I went to we sat for just a half an hour and during that time, I watched kids run around with yucky noses, hitting others, a little boy went into the bathroom to go potty and another child went in with him and the "teacher" did not even see it...nothing happened thank goodness I would have had to interupt. Another child was hit and went to the teacher and they did nothing about it. If that was your child...how would you feel! At my in-home daycare they don't always step in but they give the children "WORDS" to use instead of hitting or bitting ect. There are always three adult, two at a time, one with the babies and one with the preschoolers, that way if one needs to be out of the room there is someone to cover at all times.

Price: I pay $119 a week for a preschool teacher to care for my child outside of my home, in her building. My daughter is there for 45 hours a week = 2.64 I pay an hour.

When I had my child in a center: I paid $37 for her to be there one day a week for five hours = $7.40 and hour = $170 a week

8 month old son and toys?

linda d

what toys are good for xmas and are worthwhile for a long time for a 8 month old boy who will be 10 months on xmas??? I am going to get him the fisher price activity walker but what else that is worth the $??
I have the gooble and go hippo and the drop and roll a rounds dinosaur
toys that assist motor skills would be great

Answer
With 3 sons I have learned more about boy toys than I ever wanted to know. Here are a few things to consider before spend a ton of money:
Are you into educational toys for him??
Are you want toys that he can entertain himself alone or are you willing to use them with him?
How far a head of his age are you wanting to expose him to toys?
How is he developmentally?? If he is behind you may want to consider toys to assist his motor skills.

Once you decide on those questions it will be easier to give you assistance one wht are good toys. My boys are 8-10 hours away from their grandparents on both sides, so birthdays and holidays they usually get extra. My playarea for them is a barn that is attached to our home and it is 1000sq ft filled with toys. I have an opinion on all of the toys they have or have been exposed to. I know I didn't really answer your question, but I just thought the advice on what types of direction you might be headed with toys would be more helpful than just a list of toys.

Edit:
For Gross Motor skills (the large muscles): I suggest
- Learn & Groove musical Table by: LeapFrog ~ this is a standing activity table that will entice your son to pull himself up to a standing postion.
- Baby Gymnastics Bounce & Spin Zebra by: Fisher-Price ~ I purchased this for my nephew who is 11 months old. He loves it. It is a great work out for his little legs.
- 5-in-1 Adjustable Gym by: Little Tikes ~ this grows with your child physical developments and stimulates eye/hand coordination.
Now for Fine Motor skills (small muscles like finger manipulation): I suggest
- V.Smile Baby: Infant Development System by: Vtech ~ yes this is just like a video game, but it requires your child's brain development to coinside with finger manipulation.
- Laugh & Learn: Learning Puppy by: Fisher-Price ~ this wonderful puppy helps your child to learn ABC's, 123's, parts of the body, colors, play games, plus sing along to 10 favorite songs. Dog bone collar lights up to the music!
- Baby's First Toys by: Sassy ~ this one is by far the best for fine motor skills. There are a lot of pieces for your child to link together and even chew on.

Do a smart person have a bigger brain or is it the same as normal people's brain?

Q. For example, the normal people's work is about average but the smart person is too smart and always score 100 points but does that mean that the smart person have a bigger brain?

Answer
No, size in humans does not have much to do with intelligence. Rather it is the percentage of the brain actually used by the individual. Most people only use 30-31% of their brain for thinking functions. Smarter people use slightly more than that (though not much!). Intelligence also has to do with exposure during the infant and toddler periods. The period of time when language develops is the most crucial to brain development. Studies of "wild children" have confirmed this. Infants and young children who are more stimulated through a multitude of activities, using all of the 5 senses, are usually more intelligent. This is why doctors advocate colorful rooms, and playing music to infants, as well as toys with multiple textures and shapes.

what toys are good for 6 to 12 month old babies?

sandysneak

My 1st grandchild will be 5 months old at Christmas time. What toys are good or best for her at that age? I'd like personal comments, not manufacturers boasts.
I appreciate your sincere answers but would really like to know which specific toys are suitable. It's been many, many years since my girls were babies and I know there has been a lot more developmental toys since then. I've looked online but can't find more than 1 or 2 reviews on the toys. Please help me choose specific toys so that I don't waste money on duds. Thank you. (Knives, as a previously submitted answer will get reported to abuse as I've already done. Must have been Charles Manson or a wannabe).

my babies are 7 months now and they like those little keys that have buttons to play with music. Anything that plays music, they like those rolling balls, and chew toys. Also, books, its good to read books to infants. its bonding time when they get books read to them.

When will my infant start playing with toys?

Jadahs mom

I was wondering when will my baby Jadah start sitting up on her own and playing with her toys? She is 3 months old and Ive tried to introduce rattles to her and little bears. Also could she be teething ?...
She always has her hands in her mouth and slobbing She also like to chew on her clothes to where the front of her shirt in soaking wet.
thanx everyone!

Answer
My son noticed his toys at about 10 weeks...and started batting & slapping at them (on his activity mat) at about 11-12 weeks. He hasn't yet been able to sit up on his own, nor is he able to hold onto a toy and play with it yet...but I suspect it will be soon.

Get some teething keys or gumming toys...your child might like those, since she is chewing on everything right now. BTW, this behavior is completely normal!

I prefer the baby gym made by Selecta. Selecta makes quality wooden toys. They are more expensive, but well worth it! Babies benefit from exploring their environment; themes are not really necessary.

What types of toys that can keep your 3 y.o girl busy?

efm

Mine is play-doh/ clay.

Answer
The Corn Popper is a classic toy which has been around for years! Toddlers love to push along this toy, and watch the little balls inside the clear plastic dome go pop. This is an excellent toy to develop walking skills, as well as provide good entertainment. It's a great deal for the price. Simple and sturdy wins the day!

Snap Lock Beads: These snap lock beads come in many different bright colors. Kids love to snap these beads together and make long chains out of the shapes. A great way to learn colors and develop hand eye co-ordination!

Shape Sorter: The classic shape sorter from Fisher Price is an all time favorite. Affordable and fun, this provides a lot of stimulation for infants as they learn how to insert the proper shapes into the lid of the container.

Chatter Telephone: This adorable white telephone with the smiling face is one toy that most of us remember from our childhood days! The Chatter Telephone still provides the same entertainment to our kids.

Rock-A-Stack: This fun rocking toy from Fisher Price is another winner. It consists of many colorful rings which have to be placed on the plastic pole, in order of size. Babies and infants have a great time with this wonderful toy as they learn colors, and sizes as well as develop their hand eye co-ordination skills.

What are the best toys for a 6 month old?

Possibly something to help with learning to crawl.

Answer
In fact if youâre Christmas shopping with a infant in mind, you may find thereâs a boggling number of choices.

In the very early years safety is of special concern. A person wants to select well constructed toys, that are free of any sort of small parts that might potentially detach. Children at this age certainly will put toys in their mouths. Another reason one might also be concerned about the country of origin given the recent spate of tainted toys originating in China.

Toys for the the under one set are often aimed at emerging skills, such as fine and gross motor skills, tactile stimulation, etc.

Babies at 6 months are gaining the ability to sit up. And so toys that they can manipulate on the floor in front of them are attractive.

Babies between 6 and 12 moths of age will also begin to move (creep, crawl, take first steps) so there are many toys aimed at supporting this development too.

A few favorite suggestions:

Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden First Vehicles Set
www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Deluxe-Wooden-Vehicles/dp/B000GKY2CQ

Sturdy first vehicles for small children. The size and weight are appropriate for very young children to grasp and carry. I find that many young children will spend endless amount of time pushing a small rolling toy around. These are toys that they are likely to play with for a good long while. I do not know what the country of origin is, Melissa & Doug is a favorite brand - some of their things are made in China, others in other Asian nations such as Vietnam.

Blocks
http://fatbraintoys.com/toy_companies/haba/fantasy_blocks.cfm
(Also available for sale thru various sellers on Amazon.com)

Blocks are also another great âgrow with me toyâ. Even very young children will enjoy a small set of colorful blocks which they can simply pick up and explore. These can be added to as the child grows into more sophisticated pretend and build play. Haba makes some beautifully whimsical blocks that are manufactured in Germany.

Sorters
www.amazon.com

Sorters come in, well, all âsortsâ of sizes, colors, and configurations for young kids. And are often treasured toys for kids between 6 mos and a year and a half or so. They love to place objects inside of something and dump them out again and again. Melissa and Doug make some toys they label as âfill and spillâ with cute themes (bugs in a jug, fishbowl, picnic baskets etc.). Thereâs also the old fashion âshape sortersâ and these come in many âthemesâ these days too. For examples, just try searching for âshape sorterâ or âfill and spillâ on Amazon.com.

If you are concerned about the nation of origin - I will note that FatBrainToys.com is one toy website that allows customers to conduct product searches that include not only age, gender, price, but also the country of origin (and it allows you to exclude China if you so wish).

Can an infant teething cause the upper lip to form a blister like bump on her lip?

A and A B

Answer
My children had them when they were breast feeding. I'm sure they could be caused by teething, but are most likely the result of sucking on fingers or toys to sooth the teething. This is a portion of the definition found in Parenting Magazine. Hope this helps.
SUCKING BLISTER- Found in the center of a baby's upper lip, this blister results from the baby's sucking on a thumb, toe, or other body part

tips for a teething infant?

Ambriel

My son is just over 3 months old and is an early teether. We can see the tooth poking through and he is unconsolable lately...chewing his fists and drooling, We've tried Hylands teething gel (benzocaine free) and been giving him a dose of infant tylenol every 4-6 hours. I've also been giving him a little gripe water as well. My nipples are so bruised from him biting! What's also odd is that its none of his front teeth coming in, but his incisor on the top.

Any tips, mothers? The poor guy has hardley been able to sleep lately since he's in so much pain! My husband and I feel terrible!

Answer
When my twin brother and sister were little ( 18 months now) we got them teething toys. We also gave them distractions ( baby shows, rattles ,etc ) Talk to your doctor for some tools . Here are some really good teething toys.

Cleaning infant toys?

Maddie's M

I've been cleaning my 5 months toys in soap and water. I told yesterday that it wasn't enough that I should be using Bleach and water. How do you clean toys?

Answer
I use the Clorox spray that santitizes but isn't bleach. I'm drawing a blank on the name- but it's very common. "anytime spray"- safe around pets/food/kids/etc
I use that- but not EVERYDAY time I wash the toys- and it also depends on the reason I'm washing them. If it's just becuse my son was playing in his crib with they toy and slobbered all over it- I use soap and water. If it's because he dropped it at the mall on floor or at the DR's office- I use the santizing spray. I used to ALWAYS use the sanitizing spray. I think some people thought I was crazy- I jsut wanted my son to have safe toys. But as he's gotten older and puts EVERYTHING in his mouth-I've realized that no matter how much you watch them, they are going to ocasionally get SOMETHING in their mouth that you wouldn't like them to. You're not too far off from that stage. I am still one of the most "anal" mothers about my sons things, I've just realized what's necessary and what's going overboard.
Use good judgement. Don't spend ALL of your energy cleaning your baby's toys- all that sanitizing/wahing/rinsing takes time. I swear I used to spend all day washing/cleaning/etc....
With that said- I still sterilize my son's bottles. He's 10 months old. I do it out of habit because we did it when he was a preemie baby. And I've just never thought to stop. Until tonight. And tomorrow I think I'm just going to start soap washing.

Clorox anytime sanitizing spray works great, is affordable and safer than bleach- plus it's already mixed. It's intended for toys.

infant and toddlers?

Lisa B

need to do a hot topic paper on infants and toddlers,
and suggestions!

Answer
How about toys made in China and the dangers of lead based paint?

It can be really difficult and frustrating to figure out if the beloved toy my child is chewing on has actually been recalled. Any why aren't the toy companies doing more about this? Should the government put a stop to it, or should the free market weed out irresponsible toy companies?

What kind of toys can there be lead in?

daddyroxxy

I have an infant and I know alot of the stuff from China is not good. The only problem is like almost everything is made in China. Can there be lead in plastic toys? I don't know what kind of stuff is safe for her.

Answer
you always hear about the recalls, then when you check the site it is mainly toys for a little older kids. but it is better to be cautious, i check on a regular basis and watch the news they will have lists including everything being recalled!! and yes there can be lead in plastic toys, that is what the most recent recalls werel, they say it is in the paint they used!! just be careful and stay up to date with the news GOOD LUCK don't stress about it though because i check every week and so far my sons toys have not been included in any of the recalls
