When will my infant start playing with toys?

Jadahs mom

I was wondering when will my baby Jadah start sitting up on her own and playing with her toys? She is 3 months old and Ive tried to introduce rattles to her and little bears. Also could she be teething ?...
She always has her hands in her mouth and slobbing She also like to chew on her clothes to where the front of her shirt in soaking wet.
thanx everyone!

Answer
My son noticed his toys at about 10 weeks...and started batting & slapping at them (on his activity mat) at about 11-12 weeks. He hasn't yet been able to sit up on his own, nor is he able to hold onto a toy and play with it yet...but I suspect it will be soon.

Get some teething keys or gumming toys...your child might like those, since she is chewing on everything right now. BTW, this behavior is completely normal!

concerned mommy..infant nightmares?

Beautiful

So my one year old has a tendency to whine in her sleep sometimes she wakes up from the whining when it turns to crying, i can't understand why she does this or even better how to figure out what the cause is so it can be fixed. She's not wet when i check her, she's not cold or hot (to touch), i try to hold her and sometimes that works and she'll go back to sleep but for the most part she just whimpers in her sleep around the same time every night and begins to toss and turn could it be nightmares?...Someone please shed some insight on what this may be or if you've dealt with a similar situation, what ended up happening, does it still happen? Oh yeah she just started doing the whimper-whine a few weeks ago a month at th most...Thanx.

Concerned mommy.

Answer
Hello, I have worked with 0-2 year olds in daycare centres for the past few years. It is not uncommon for children around the age of 12-18 months to experience these 'nightmares'.
These 'nightmares' have been related to feelings of seperation anxiety (particularly in children who attend daycare) and events in a child's day which may seem small to us, but mean a lot to them, such as misplacing a toy, becoming upset about something.
To settle your child it is important not to wake them up because often they are still somewhat asleep even if they are quite distressed. Waking them will only add to this. They should settle quite easily with some gentle patting and verbal reassurance/songs.
I hope this helps.

Is it okay to buy the wooden blocks?

Momm

My son is 9 months old and he loves to play with those small cardboard books and some plastic shape toys. I was thinking a great toy for him would be the wooden blocks with letters and numbers carved in them. I went to the store today and found some but they said ages 3+.
I really couldn't think of a reason for this. They are WAY too big for him to get the whole thing in his mouth so I cant see a choking hazard. It said the paint was nontoxic and it doesn't chip.. what gives?

Do you have any wooden toys for your infant? I feel like I'm missing something here... is there something bad about letting a baby play with wooden toys? Everything in the store that was wooden had ages 2 or 3 and up on it.

thx.

Answer
I agree with the other answerers :) Wooden blocks make great toys for babies... my baby sister does try to eat hers, but it hasn't hurt her lol. I think they're probably 3 and up because they have letters and numbers on them. By the way, simple toys like blocks are FABULOUS at almost any age because they encourage creativity! Most kids love simple toys that they can really use their imaginations with. Complex toys that are overly designed lose a kid's interest after a while because they're too obvious...

How stable is personality in infants?

Straight P

Answer
It is always unstable. Their mind changes frequently. Because they are innocent. For them even a small wooden toy is precious. They do not know how to distinguish valuables like Gold or silver with ordinary wooden toys.

They may leave the golden toy and only prefer the cheap wooden one.

Rubber toys for rabbits?

Allison

I am getting a bunny soon, so I was looking around the house for things he could play with (ex.--tissue boxes, baby toys like keys). I came across a rubber duck, which made me wonder if that is something he would be able to play with, or he would rip through and possibly choke. Also, I would like to know some other things that would and would not make good toys. Thanks!

Answer
Things made of rubber is a bad idea. Most bunnies somehow love rubber-made stuff in a yummy-to-eat way. For example, many bunny owners have had their wires and remote control buttons chewed (and of course, ingested.)

Tissue boxes are okay, remember to remove all the tissue of course! You can use the tissue box as a hay hanger - just stuff loads of hay inside and watch your bunny pull them out and eat them!

I don't know if baby key toys are good though. Those are also rubber thingies, and I do not give them to my bunnies. What I do give are: a (jeans) cloth, a cardboard box with two holes cut out so that the box becomes a tunnel, and a chew wood bought from a pet shop.

This is the one of my bunny with the cloth and box:

You can email me to deniseim48@hotmail.com if you have bunny questions along your bunny-caring way! I'll be happy to help and I'll try to reply ASAP! :D

Are you going to circumcise your baby boy?

Proud Momm

Why or why not?

Answer
No national or international medical association recommends routine circumcision.

No. It is a cosmetic surgery, medically unnecessary. It is extremely painful (see the video link at the end of my message). Genital Integriy, Intact Genitals, Rights to an Intact Body are for all.

If you are religious, "God Designed. Mother Approved. Revision is Circumcision"

Every baby boy on the planet is born with a foreskin and yet very few have them removed. The foreskin is a perfectly normal natural body part.

It is illegal to circumcise baby girls. Would you be asking this question if your baby is a girl? The answer is probably no. So, the answer to would "I amputate normal healthy body parts of my baby boy,at the risk of death, perform cosmetic elective surgery on my perfect newborn?" The answer is no.

Doctors tell you the amputated Lie when it comes to Circumcision. I beg you to learn the WHOLE TRUTH.

Every YEAR, more than 100 babies die from Circumcision. If this was a product, a toy, a crib, stroller, bottle for sale, on the market, for babies, it would have been recalled long ago.

Here is a video made by doctors for doctors on circumcision.

â¢No national or international medical association recommends routine circumcision.

â¢Only the USA circumcises the majority of newborn boys without medical or religious reason.

â¢Medicalized circumcision began during the 1800s to prevent masturbation, which was believed to cause disease.

â¢Today's parents are learning that the foreskin is a normal, protective, functioning organ.

Traveling with an infant?

KS

Me and my 7 month old are traveling by plane to California from Texas, unfortunately she has just started teething as well any tips on how to make the trip as enjoyable as possible for both of us?

Answer
Just bring her favorite toy and snacks. When actually on the airplane...you just have to keep her entertained as long as possible.

My son usually fell asleep on each plane ride. But there were a couple rides where he just wanted to not be held and get into everything. Ugh!

We fly all the time. We actually did when my son was 7 months as well. That trip he slept all 4 plane rides.

Good luck!

6 months old baby question?

Tara K

I am starting to do a little Christmas shopping for my daughter who is 4 months old now, but she will be a day short of 6 months on Christmas day, so my questions is what was your 6 month old able to do? I mean like could they crawl, roll over, sit on their own, etc... I want to get her toys that she will be able to use at 6 months. Thanks.

Answer
I would say toys that light up and or make noise. Something she can bang on.
My 6 month old could sit up, roll over on her own. She could not crawl, but was close. She did get around by rolling or scooting.
Go to fisher price.com they have a good web site you can review the toy options.

What is the best teething toy to give my infant?

Gann

Those plastic rings you put in the fridge are not working.

Answer
The Best Teething Toys

By Miebeth Bustillo-Booth, ChildTrek Founder

Natural & Wood Teethers
The best teething toys are made of natural materials like wood. Wood is naturally anti-bacterial. (Thatâs why there are wooden cutting boards.) So it is self-cleaning. Wood is hard and will help ease teeth in. But not all wood toys are ideal. The best wooden teething toys are either unfinished or lightly finished with beeswax, water-based stains, or other non-toxic paints. Itâs best to gain the manufacturer statements to this effect. At ChildTrek, only toys that have met or exceeded safety standards are available.

Great Teething Toys
Grabbing Toy Giraffe with Wooden Teething Ring by Kathe KruseConsider the Infant Grabbing Toy Mah or Giraffe by Kathe Kruse. They are made out of non-porous beech wood, lightly finished with beeswax, and made using non-toxic dyes. There are no harmful chemicals to leach out while your baby gnaws on the hard wood. The wooden ring is extra large for easy handling by small hands. The lamb and the giraffe can be removed for machine or hand wash. And they are completely adorable!

The Grabbing Star Red or Blue also by Kathe Kruse has a wooden teething ring and interesting textures for early learning stimulation. A special feature is a velcro loop at one of the star ends so that it can be fastened as a stroller toy. This achieves a couple of things: the teether is always nearby and it doubles as a grabbing toy. Smart!

Girali Rattle by SelectaThe Girali Rattle by Selecta, aside from being a practical teething toy, is uniquely beautiful. It is made of native woods from Germany and finished with beeswax and non-toxic paints - completely safe for your baby.

Also, itâs hard to beat the Cherry Rattle by Camden Rose. It is lightly finished with beeswax. Its contoured design makes for interesting tactile stimulation. Its gentle rattle is soothing. As a teether - it is naturally hard to facilitate teething. Watch as your baby gnaws on this beautiful toy for hours.

Cold and Soothing
Organic Vegetabe Teethers by Under the NileOne of my personal favorites for the summer are the organic teethers by miYim and Under the Nile. Take the Bunny, Elephant, or Bear teether. Dampen, not soak it. Put it in the freezer. Then let your baby gnaw on this cool toy to help soothe tender gums. Do the same for the Fruits or the Vegetables by Under the Nile. Besides gently soothing for your baby, you are teaching your baby to âeatâ his or her fruits and veggies!

Vary Teethers
Itâs best to keep a few different teethers around that have varying textures and hardness. Some teeth come in easier than others. The molars, for example, are especially hard on infants.

Check out ChildTrekâs selection of ideal teething toys.

How can I go green with raising my infant?

SayWhat?

How can I go green with raising my infant?
Glass bottles instead of plastic,
organic and petro free baby lotion, soap, etc
organic clothing and bedding,
wood floors in nursery,
cloth diapers.......WHAT ELSE? Thank you for your ideas!

Answer
Making your own baby food is a good one. That way your baby gets all the nutrition you get in mashed form. I use a KidCo food mill. You put the food in, crank the handle and baby eats what you eat for meals. It was a $13 investment that saved tons in baby food and you get to know exactly what baby gets.

Also instead of cloth diapers you could look into g-diapers. They have a website and are also sold at places like Whole Foods. They are a cross between a cloth and a disposable however instead of throwing away the diaper you flush a biodegradable insert down the toilet and wash out the outer shell. They have no pins and use velcro on the back so baby can't take off his or her own diaper.

And instead of wipes you could buy a box-o-rags that you re-use by cleaning with bleach or a natural cleaning agent (Shaklee makes a great one). You cut them into smaller pieces and dampen them when you have poopy diapers. They are usually recycled from old t-shirts so they aren't a rough fabric and very cost effective.

Getting fabrics that are made of soy, bamboo, or other natural replenishing fibers are not only safer but usually softer and last longer.

If you don't already have wood floors in your nursery, look for a demolition in your area of maybe a school, church or the like and ask about getting your wood from them. School gyms and churches usually have old wood floors full of charm and character and most often this stuff goes to the dump.

Buying wood toys (such as Melissa and Doug items) ensures your baby has child-safe yet fun, educational toys that aren't full of plastic and batteries.

One last thing I can think of. When storing baby food or breastmilk, buy cases of Mason jars. This eliminates the use of plastic ice cube trays (for freezing food), tupperware, and Saran wrap. The jars come in all sorts of sizes and are less expensive that Glad-ware in the long run.

Do you rate and review the toys and such that you buy for your baby?

Chelsea

My daughter recieved this awesome toy for her birthday and she loved it. She picked up how to play with it right away. In all the reviews I read online about it.. it said it was a waste of money because baby never got intrested. So i decided to rate the toy since there was nothing positive about it on there. I think i'm going to do it with most of her toys. Haha.

Anyway, Have you or do you rate and review your babys toys and such?

Answer
I do- especially if they are good! I want other parents to know the same.

It's funny you mentioned that though- I wrote a review after reading a review on our baby's infant bouncy seat. It's a Baby Einstein...and everyone said that after a time, the music and lights no longer played. We had that problem too and discovered it was because it was not pushed in all the way- and I mean all the way. So, that's what started me with writing a review. I also wrote a review for our SUV recently- because I love it. It's almost 1 now and it's been awesome in any kind of weather...so I guess I believe in spreading the word.

At what age is an infant no longer at risk for SIDS?

Kimberly M

Answer
SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, occurs most frequently between the second and fourth month of age. While risks decline after the sixth month, your child is still within the danger zone up until his first birthday, according the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

Researchers have not been able to pinpoint one specific factor that causes SIDS, but experts agree that a combination of factors are probably to blame. These likely include genetic factors, a congenital malformation in the brain, and environmental factors.

SIDS is not caused by vomiting or vaccines. It does occur more frequently in boys than girls and in African Americans and Navajos more than other races.

There are some practices that you can implement to reduce the risks of SIDS. First Candle, formerly the National SIDS Foundation, recommends the following:

Place infants to sleep on their backs, even though they may sleep more soundly on their stomachs. Stomach- and side-sleeping raises risks.
Place infants to sleep in a baby bed with a firm mattress. There should be nothing in the bed but the babyâno covers, no pillows, no bumper pads, no positioning devices, and no toys. Soft mattresses and heavy covering are associated with the risk for SIDS.
Keep your baby's crib in your room until your infant is at least six months of age. Studies clearly show that infants are safest when their beds are close to their mothers.
Do not place your baby to sleep in an adult bed. Typical adult beds are not safe for babies. Do not fall asleep with your baby on a couch or in a chair.
Do not over-clothe your infant while she sleeps. You want to dress your baby just well enough to keep her warm without having to use a cover. Keep the room at a temperature that is comfortable for you. Overheating an infant may increase the risk for SIDS.
Avoid exposing your child to tobacco smoke. Don't have your infant in the same house or car with someone who is smoking. The greater the exposure to tobacco smoke, the greater the risk of SIDS.
If possible, breastfeed your baby. The consumption of breast milk decreases the occurrence of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, and studies show that breastfed babies have a lower SIDS rate than formula-fed babies.
Avoid exposing the infant to people with respiratory infections. Avoid crowds. Carefully clean anything that comes in contact with the baby. Have people wash their hands before holding or playing with your baby. SIDS often occurs in association with relatively minor respiratory (mild cold) and gastrointestinal infections (vomiting and diarrhea).
Offer your baby a pacifier. Some studies have shown

will it ruin my electric blanket to sleep on top of it?

aking54220

i just bought an electric blanket and told some people that i put it under my fitted sheets (personal pref i guess) these people just about died saying that i was going to ruin it in no time. but this is also from people who dont know that elec blankets now a days are also washable. are they right, will i ruin it if i sleep on top of it??

Answer
I pulled some safety issues about electric blankets from the fire deparmetnt information web site. Half way down it say never lay or sit on an electric blacket for you can damage the blanket coils and cause a fire.

damaged blanket, however, can easily become an ignition source for a fire. Electric blankets that are too hot or kept on one area of the body for too long also pose a real threat for burns. This is especially a concern for infants, the elderly, or anyone who might have difficulty sensing hot temperatures or moving the blanket if it gets too hot.

The City of Fairfax Fire Department offers the following recommendations for using electric blankets safely:

⢠Only use electric blankets that have been approved by nationally recognized testing agencies (like Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.).

⢠Always buy new electric blankets; second-hand blankets may not be safe.

⢠Replace all electric blankets that are more than 10 years old. Most fires caused by electric blankets are caused by those older than 10 years.

⢠Replace any electric blanket that is worn or torn, where the electric cord is frayed, or where the temperature control is damaged.

⢠Turn your electric blanket off when not in use. Many older models have no internal temperature control to shut the blanket off when it gets too hot; if your blanket has no such internal control, consider replacing it with a newer model.

⢠Turn your electric blanket off before you go to sleep (unless the blanket is made specifically to be used all night).

⢠Refrain from using more than one electric blanket (or heating pad) at a time. Do not use electric blankets and heating pads together. The heat generated by the combined appliances can cause serious burns.

⢠Do not plug your electric blanket into an outlet that is controlled by a light switch; the blanket could be switched on accidentally.

⢠Do not pile toys, pillows, blankets, or other materials on top of an electric blanket or tuck electric blankets underneath mattresses or other items; excessive heat may build up to the point where the blanket could ignite.

⢠Do not sit or lay on top of an electric blanket; this may damage the blanketâs internal coils and expose the heating element to combustible fabric.

⢠Never ball up an electric blanket up and leave it on; excessive heat may build up to the point where the blanket could ignite.

⢠Unplug your blanket if you smell smoke or if any scorching is evident; discoloration of the blanket may indicate that it is burning internally.

⢠Never wash an electric blanket; the twisting, tugging, and turning action of the washing machine will damage the internal coils.

⢠Do not dry clean electric blankets; the chemicals used in the cleaning process may damage the heating insulation and increase the risk of fire.

⢠Ideally, electric blankets should be stored flat. If that is not possible, roll it up or fold it with as few creases as possible; be careful when folding the blanket to protect the internal coils.

⢠Replace any blanket where the embedded heating wires have been displaced or damaged. Check by holding the blanket up to light; the wires should be evenly spaced and not touch each other anywhere.

⢠Never use an electric blanket that is wet; do not turn an electric blanket on to dry it out. Refrain from using electric blankets and hot water bottles together.

If you have any doubt about the safety of your electric blanket, discontinue using it. It can still be used as a regular blanket, without plugging it in.

US Airways travel with infant?

robin s

I will be flying from San Diego to Grand Junction Colorado with my 3 month old daughter. I have a few questions, I will just list them, and if you have answers or advice for any, please share:

Can I bring my stroller and is that considered a carry on?

I cannot breast feed and have to pump every six hours, can I bring my medela electric pump on the plane or do I have to check it..and if I check it, will it be safe from damage?

My car seat comes with the carseat base..can I bring that?

I paid for her to have her own seat, does that she means she can have carry on's and checked luggage as well?

Will somebody help me to get to the next flight after the layover?

Anything else I should know?

Answer
You can take the stroller to the gate and it will be gate checked. Then you will be able to collect it as soon as you get off the plane. It may take a while to get there, so no need to rush off the plane. The stroller will not be counted as a carry on item.

I do not see any reason why you cannot take your pump on the plane. If you do check it, make sure it is well padded and it should be ok.

If you paid for a seat for your daughter you need to take the car seat base on since you will fix the seat in the same way as you do in the car. Remember that when the car seat base is attached to the car seat, it is a lot heavier than when you are just carrying the car seat by itself.

Your daughter gets the same luggage allowance as you since you paid for her seat. I would try to keep your carry on to one since that is all you will be able to manage with the car seat!

Do not rely on someone to help you get to your next flight, even if the airline say this is possible. We booked a wheelchair for my father-in-law one time and when he got there he was told that there was no one available to help him!! You need to only take enough pieces of luggage that you can do it by yourself. Push the stroller with one hand, pull a roll-along bag with the other and have a back-pack diaper bag. You need to find a way of either fitting the car seat base in the basket under your stroller, ot attaching it (with bungy cords or similar) to the stroller.

When I travelled with my children at this age, I used the Baby Trend Snap'N'Go infant seat carrier and I could balance the car seat base on top of the basket. I think I used the latch system belt to keep it on there!

You did the right thing getting a seat for your daughter. It is safer for her and more comfortable for both of you. Make sure her car seat says on it that it is FAA approved and put it in the plane rear facing the same as it is in the car. You will need to make sure that you have a window seat for her (so you don't block anyone else's exit) If you can get a bulk head seat that is the best, if not then unfortunately the person in front of her will not be able to put their seat back, on a short flight this should not be a problem. Just stand your ground if the person complains, your daughters safety is more important than that persons comfort!

Try to get your daughter to take a bottle during take-off and landing, although if she is asleep don't wake her to do it! They are also the most important times for her to be strapped in her seat. Since she is facing backwards, you will be able to see her and interact with her well. Take a few of her favorite toys to play with when she is awake.

Other than carrying the car seat (and bottles etc) this is probably the easiest time to travel with a baby. I am just about to do a 10 hour flight with my 2 children aged 18 months and nearly 3 years! I have managed to devise a way that I can carry 2 car seats and everything else by myself, just in case I do not get any help!

Good luck!!

producing and selling a toy that could be potentially harmful when handled by infants? Please Help?

Q. What role should corporations assume when producing and selling a toy that could be potentially harmful when handled by infants?
please Explain

Answer
A BIG warning label.
It seems that half the toys for 6 y/o Gabe are hazardous to his 18 month old brother Ezra. So what? That's why God made parents. Why should Gabe be restricted to toys only suitable for an infant?
Now, if you mean toxic cr@p with lead paint, that's different.

How many units are sold for a typical infant toy?

amnon

HI,
Iâm looking for data about the typical sales volumes of an infant toy. Iâm only interested in toys of leading companies, such as Fisher Price, Tomy, MGA, Hasbro, Learningcurve and step2.

Just to clarify, Iâm not looking for the total amounts of toys of any kind that a company sold. The key is the number of units sold per specific toy model.

Any solid data to backup the answer will be highly appreciated.
