I want to know how much the baisics would be a month for having a child. food, diapers, wipes, clothes, maybe a few toys. you know mainly the esentials. Just a rough estimate.
i live in wisconsin. theres not much here. and i do ususally shop at wal mart. hah.

Answer
There is a myth out there that kids are expensive. The expense of a child is solely dependant on the parental units. If you want to spend $50 on Nikes for a baby than thats your perogative, dont complain about an expense that is your fault.
Honestly, do you really need to put a new born in Nikes and Tommy hilfiger outfits...no. Do you realy need entire bedroom suite for a child that wont crawl or walk for at least 6 months...no. Changing a diaper on a couch, table or chair is just as easy, do you really need a bassinet..no
Keys to being thrifty
*Find a local dollar store..the toy, clothes and whatnots there last just as lonf as the ones at fancy stores. My sons $5 batman gets played with and broken just as fast as the $30 version from toys r us.
*Find a thrift store-tons of deals on kid supplies
*Friends with kids are a blessing, we constantly get hand me downs like cloths, furniture, toys all in great condition. My 2 year actually has a Tommy Hilfiger outfit that was a hand me down, I would never pay that much, crazy
*Drop the pride for a day, take a drive through rich neighborhoods on garbage day, you would be amazed at what they throw away. I havd found unopened infant baths, bassinets etc..
*the most important thing money cant buy...your time, smother them with your time and they wont require all the access things that parents buy to avoid hangin with their kids. Me and my boys are inseperable, walks, rides, beach, parks all free
*There are tons of food programs that assist, WIC etc..There is a church dinner for everyday of the week where I am at, always free and open to everybody, just look and you will find
*good luck
1500 bucks a month for a kid is ridiculous

Is it bad not to buy toys for your infant?

Corrina

She is @ daycare every weekday from 9-5, but I have no toys for her @ home. I don't see the point. On Saturdays, I hold her and sing & dance while handwashing laundry, and other cleaning, and cooking, then in our other spare time we just go 2 the beach. My mom always makes me feel so guilty, she bought her a ton of stuff and she never played w/ it so I took it to GoodWill

Answer
I dont think it is bad not to have toys for your daughter but I think that you should have some things for her to play with around the house. Wheter it be some activites such as crayons and coloring books or some sort of game for the entire family. Too many toys can spoil a child but not enough toys can delay development. Toys can be very educational for children or all ages...depending on the toy. Although she get her play time at daycare it is important for her to learn the quality of playing alone at home...at daycare she is with many children for her to interact with. At home she will need time with her parents...sounds like you've got that part down...but she also needs to learn to play on her own to gain some independence and feelings of responsibility and control.

I need help identifying characters that comply with Erikson's theory.?

I have done most of my assignment but i don't watch alot of television and i don't have any interest in what celebs are doing with their lives. So i need help identifying a character for 7 of the 8 stages in Erikson's theory.

Here is what i have so far.
Abstract
In our portion we will give a brief description of Erikson’s Theory which will include each stage of development. Erikson’s proposed 7 key stages in the way we develop throughout our life. These stages are first, basic trust versus basic mistrust. Secondly is autonomy versus shame and doubt. Thirdly is initiative versus guilt, the fourth stage is industry versus inferiority. The fifth stage is identity versus identity confusion, sixth is intimacy versus isolation. The seventh stage is generatively versus stagnation and lastly is the eighth stage which is integrity versus despair we will also identify a character at each stage.

Behavior Across the Lifespan
Erikson’s Theory of psychosocial development is one of the best known theories of personality in psychology. Erikson believed that one’s personality develops in a series of stages one of the main elements of his psychosocial stage theory is the development of ego identity. Ego identity is the conscious sense of self that we develop through social interaction. In each stage Erikson believed that people would experience a conflict in which they can either master the quality where they would achieve a great sense of mastery or they may fail in which that individual will experience a sense of inadequacy. While discussing the different stages we will also identify a character at each stage. The eight stages include trust versus mistrust, autonomy versus shame and doubt, initiative versus guilt, industry versus inferiority, identity versus confusion, intimacy versus isolation, generatively versus stagnation, and lastly is Integrity versus despair. Everyone develops similarly by following the eight steps that we have previously mentioned while also developing into individuals as we will prove in the following essay. ("Erikson's stages of," 2010 para)

The first stage is that of trust versus mistrust which occurs between birth and one year
which is the most fundamental stage in life. Because infants are utterly dependant the development of trust is based solely on that of the child’s caregiver. This is why young children strive with provided with a predictable daily schedule. When a child develops trust they will feel secure, if they do not they may develop fear and believe that the world is inconsistent and unpredictable. The Olsen twins (Full House) can be associated with this particular stage because as infants they became stars. They took turns playing the role of Michelle Tanner on the popular television series Full House. While filling this role the two young children had to become comfortable with their new television family in order to have trust and be able to perform as needed.

Autonomy versus Shame and Doubt is the second stage in which occurs in early childhood and is focus on children developing a superior sense of personal control. Erikson believed that potty training a child leads to a feeling of control and independence because they can control their own bodily functions. Another important part of this stage is letting the child chose what they wear, the toys they play with and occasionally the food they eat. When a child masters this stage they feel very confident and if they fail they may experience a feeling of inadequacy. A character that can be associated with this stage is …..

The third stage is Initiative versus guilt which occurs during the preschool years. Children begin to assert their power and control by directing play and other social interaction. The children who master this stage feel confident and are able to lead others. But those who fail at this stage develop a sense of guilt and a lack of initiative. ("Erickon's psychosocial stages," 2010 para) An appropriate character for this stage would be …

Industry versus Inferiority occurs during the early school years between the ages of 5-11. Through interactions with other children kids build a sense of pride in their abilities they possess along with their accomplishments. Children who are encouraged and praised by parents and teachers for a job well done are more likely to be happy and strive where the ones who are not will doubt their ability to be successful. A character that can be associated with this stage is …

Identity versus Confusion occurs during adolescence when children are discovering their independence and developing their sense of self. Adolescents whom are encouraged have a higher chance of emerging from this stage feeling confident and will have a positive attitude for the future. Those who do not will be confused and will doubt the future as they may feel inadequate. The character that has been chosen for this stage is …

Intimacy
Identity versus Confusion occurs during adolescence when children are discovering their independence and developing their sense of self. Adolescents whom are encouraged have a higher chance of emerging from this stage feeling confident and will have a positive attitude for the future. Those who do not will be confused and will doubt the future as they may feel inadequate. The character that has been chosen for this stage is …

Intimacy versus Isolation is obviously geared toward early adulthood when young adults are becoming sexually active while exploring intimate relationships. Because each stage builds on what was accomplished in the previous stages it becomes more difficult for those that have not mastered the previous stages to catch up so to speak. When an individual is confident and secure in who they are and the person they are becoming they are more likely to succeed at these later stages. Erikson believed that it was crucial for people to hcommitted relationships with have

Is it right to keep a 4year old out off nursery?

My 4year old started nursery about 6months ago but hates it and never wants to go he's also been naughty since he started there! In sept he starts full time in the infants,do u think its wrong to keep him out of nursery until he starts big school?

Answer
nursery is a good setting for preparing for school.

many kids don't like the separation from their parents initially. but after a few days or weeks, they get used to the idea. and they enjoy spending time playing with other kids, doing stuff they wouldn't get to do at home.

if you take him out of nursery, he will miss this chance, and might spend the first few weeks of school getting over the separation upset, missing education.

that said, there is no reason he has to stay in that nursery. my son went to 3 different nurseries when he was small. the first was near my home, but too far from work. it was a nice place, just too far away.

the second was nearer work, but useless. they had new staff every other week, they yelled at kids for playing with the wrong toys, the kids were often bored...

then after another house move, we found a really good nursery.

as we left the village one sunday, heading in the direction of nursery, my son asked if he "could play with the childrens today?"

i would have a look around at some different nurseries. maybe one with smaller class groups, or more outdoor activities.

Babysitting and nannying is what I love to do and it's what I do best!

Here is a little about myself and my experiences:

I have worked as a caregiver in the Infant and Toddler Rooms at DayStar Christian Academy.
I have worked full-time for multiple families with in-home care, which have included triplets and those with special needs.
I am a featured sitter on sittercity.com and care.com.

I sincerely enjoy not only caring for children, but also engaging in activities with each individual child and spending time with them as well. I always put a big effort into ensuring the children I care for are both safe and enjoying themselves.

I don't encourage spending much time watching TV or for the little ones to be laying down by themselves, but prefer playing interactive games and providing exciting learning experiences! Also, my house is clean, smoke-free and child-proofed!

I understand how important it is to leave your child with someone you trust and to know your child will be very well taken care of while you are away. I promise you that any and all children I am caring for will receive the best supervision, attention and devotion possible!

My life is centered around my family and the children for whom I provide care. Our house is filled with love, laughter and hugs because I believe each and every child needs a secure, loving, and nurturing environment in which to thrive and flourish!

For my daughter's 5th birthday me and 2 of my friends are taking her to Disney World. What do you find to be the must see attractions for a 5 year old girl who loves the princesses and animals? Any tips, tricks, or specials that you know of please let me know. We will only be there from Thursday (evening)-Monday (evening). Anything that will make this the best birthday for her!

Answer
MAGIC KINGDOM:

Splash Mountain: Skip it. For some reason, the line is always horridly long. The ride itself lasts over ten minutes, but I really can't remember why we even fastpassed it.

Pirates of the Caribbean: It's an outdated ride and doesn't have a plot, but seems like it should; it isn't for 2-year-olds anyway. Skip it.

Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress: Young ones can get restless. It's pretty dry, but it can be interesting for adults to see the kind of animatronics Walt Disney used.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: Do it. It puts you directly into the middle of the Winnie the Pooh stories, and is especially great for younger children.

Peter Pan's Flight: Do it. Very cool effect-- feels like you are, indeed, flying.

You can meet most of the Disney princesses at Magic Kingdom. You can also meet the Disney Fairies there.

HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS:

The Great Movie Ride: Skip it (unless she's one of the brave ones). It can be a little creepy for young children.

Toy Story Mania: Do it. So fun-- it's a 4-D carnival-style video game ride. Fastpass it if you can.

Tower of Terror: Skip it. Not for young children.

Star Tours: Do it if you're a Star Wars fan.

Studio Backlot Tour: Do it if you like Disney movies. Teens and adults find it more interesting than kids, but it's very neat. It's a tram ride that takes you to see real costumes and props worn and used in Disney films. You can take pictures.

EPCOT:

Soarin': Do it. Feels like you're flying. You feel the wind and smell the oranges as you pass over the grove.

Test Track: Do it. Some sharp turns in there, but it's a fun, fast-paced ride.

The Seas with Nemo and Friends: Do it. Visually beautiful ride.

Turtle Talk with Crush: Do it. It's an interactive show where Crush talks with the audience.

You can also see many Disney princesses at Epcot.

ANIMAL KINGDOM:

Dinosaur: Skip it unless you think she'd like the dinosaur animatronics. A T-Rex comes chasing after you, but it can be fun as long as you remind yourself it isn't real, haha.

Kilimanjaro Safaris: Do it. It's the tram ride where you get to see the African animals-- it's so cool to see them up close.

Affection Section: Do it, since she likes animals. It's a petting zoo.

Extra tips:

You definitely want to make the most of the trip, so I definitely suggest arriving as soon as possible-- when they open, if you can. If you get there when they open, you have time to fastpass the rides you want. If you do get there early, you may want to trek over to the other side of the park and work your way towards the front-- this allows you to ride rides against the flow of the masses (when you're at the back of the park when they open, there won't be many people crowding the rides in that area at that time.
Note: Disney's fastpass service is undeniably awesome. IT'S FREE, too. The most popular rides will offer the fastpass service (it essentially allows you to skip a great deal of the line). Read about fastpasses here: https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/guest-services/fast-pass/

Since there she's young, you may want to visit a "less-interesting" show if she gets a little tired and worn during the afternoon. Most daytime shows are 20-30 minutes long, so they make for good naptime interludes for infants and toddlers.

Wish you the best. Have a great time!

What should I get for a baby shower gift?

Brisly N

One of my good friends just had a baby girl and we are having the baby shower soon. What should I get her and the baby?? Anyone have any interesting and creative ideas?? Thanks!

Answer
some things i loved that i didn't get:
a couple 'swaddle me's and a 'snuzzler' by kiddopotamus; i know babies r us has them for ten bucks a piece
depends really on your price range....check her registry too...
skip hop makes great diaper bags
if she has a changing table, get her a prince lionheart hang on diaper depot and wipes warmer to match; i dont' care what others say, ours works great, wipes are warm still when they get to baby's bottom and they do seem to appreciate it, esp as nbs
a baby bjorn with lumbar support; my dd is 8 mos old and loves hers and will still sleep in it if she gets tired, so it must be comfortable
if shes formula feeding, a 'dr brown's formula pitcher'; there is no shaking involved, so no foam or bubbles to put gas in baby's belly and u can make a whole day's worth at one time....
a boppy with a couple cotton covers, the soft ones don't fit as well for some reason....they can be used for feeding, resting tired arms when holding a baby, when baby gets older, to help him sit up, and for him to lean over for tummy time...they are great!
i love my diaper genie 2; ppl complain that they smell, but ours never has and my dd is on two solid meals a day as well as her milk...we use the dg for poopies only so sometimes there are some in there for a while and they still don't stink; refills are only five dollars at walmart....
she will probably get a ton of clothes and blankets, socks and such
a great thing! nobody thinks of, bc i figured it out myself....a lingerie bag for washing socks, hand mitts and other small things to keep from getting lost in the wash...
a pack of soothie brand passys, funny looking, but all a lot of babies will take including mine and they have no parts to break and are easy to clean....
if u know her well enough to know about her dig cam, get her a big memory card for all her pics....
some sleepsacks for when baby is older...
diapers if you know what kind she likes....they are always a good choice
i love my primo euro baby bathtub....it is marvelous!!!
a lamaze brand baby mirror with the wedge instead of the little frame stands....hard for baby to knock over and covered in high contrast colors, my dd used to play with the wedge by itself as well as with the mirror
the mirror to go in the car so she can see baby from her rearview mirror
a 'mosquito' or 'weather' mesh cover to go over infant carrier; it's easy to see through, take on and off, and strangers can't just walk up and touch baby, and THEY WILL, who knows why, but they do!
if u get the bathtub, or a bathtub, fill it with bath stuff..towels, washclothes, baby soap, lotion, hairbrush, comb, health kit with thermometer, nasal bulb, clippers, etc...baby toys for tub, toy holder for tub side...etc...
buy her some baby board books to read to her baby and in an few mos, baby will be trying to turn pages for mom, and they can take a lot of slobber
bibs, a variety, some cutesy for going out, some with waterproof backing, some of the thick terry cloth that pull over the head, i love bumpkins for feeding, etc....and you could buy a sippy cup or two, some soft small infant spoons and bowls, etc...
just pick a theme and go with it would be fun....there is sooo much
oh, and my dd is almost 9 mos and she still LOVES her womb bear, it plays a heartbeat with blood pulsing sound, brus has all this stuff and walmart has some of it.....maybe some baby einstein or other cd lullabies and a small cd player for baby's room, buy some classical music...etc..
i know it's a book , but i love these things...also
'what to expect the first year' was a very helpful book for me and my hub and it's a great reference when you have a question.................
buy her some nice rounded baby hangers and some with clips to keep outfits together....i needed so many of those it was unbelievable...
don't buy any clothes bigger than 0/3 bc depending on size and shape of baby they may not fit in the right season; my gal was 7, 6; but long and lean, so she wore nb and 0/3 forever; she had a lot of 3/6 outfits that were too cold to wear by the time she fit in them
a gift card to the store she is registered or a nearby baby store is also great, bc she can get whatever she still needs after the shower
my dd loved her bouncy seat, but has gotten a lot more mileage out of her rainforest jumperoo; she still bounces in it like a wild monkey and she's still on the lowest settting (she is petite though), but she loves that thing to death...ok, i will stop now..if you have any questions email me....i love to shop, can you tell?

What are some tips for traveling with an infant?

what's the easiest way to fly with an infant and a toddler?

best infant toys for plane image

jl2829

The toddler will have his own seat, but I will be holding the baby. My questions are, should the toddler fly in his carseat, and if should we be taking a stroller to the gate (I have a double jogger).
Anyone who has gone through this, please give advice! This is not a vacation, it is for a cross country move so both carseats will need to go on the plane in some way.

Answer
Definitely strap the toddler into his seat and buckle him in. Don't get him out for any reason. Treat it like a car trip. Take a stroller to the gate, but I'd recommend just using a single stroller because they're easier to fold and deal with and get a sling or Bjorn for your infant. It'll be easier for everyone involved! Make sure to have new toys in a backpack for him. Think: a new box of crayons, coloring book and paper, play doh, little plastic animals and cars. One thing my grandmother did for me in a similar situation was to wrap little junky toys like the ones mentioned above and at certain time intervals I was allowed to open a new one. It made the trip go faster (according to my parents) and I only got them if I was behaving myself. Good luck!

should I be worried about flying 18 hours with a 9 month old?

Lisa

I'm going home to visit family and I won't have anyone else to help me. I've never taken him on a plane but I'm scared that he'll cry the whole way and I'll feel really bad for annoying others. Does breastfeeding work well for taking off/landing? I'm open to any suggestions!
I couldn't even afford my economy class ticket let alone business, my family paid for it so they can meet the baby. My husband has to stay home too.

Answer
For a trip that long, I would highly recommend paying the extra price and getting your baby his own seat in her carseat. That way you don't have to hold him the whole time. You CAN fly "infant in arms" and not pay for him to fly but would it be worth it? Just my two cents.....

Yes, breastfeeding or a pacifier helps with the differences of cabin pressure during take off and landing, just like chewing gum. Bring little toys and books to keep her from getting too bored. Bring a lot of healthy snack foods and pick her up and walk around occasionally. Try traveling mainly at night, may be your baby will sleep more.

Also, if your baby cries a lot, the seasoned travelers are used to it, and besides you won't see any one else on the plane again so don't feel bad. And a bad day or so of crying and the annoyance of the trip won't have any negative affect on a normally happy baby.

When do you need toys for the baby?

Hi. I'm 33 weeks along with my first, and while picking up some stuff at the store today, it occurred to me- when do you need baby toys? I read in the nursing book that, for the first couple months, the baby can only see a couple feet away... I mean, there are little hanging toys on the "infant swing" we've got, and a mobile for the crib. What else do I need, and when? Thank you so much!

Answer
"When do you need toys for the baby?"

Never? LOL. Just kidding, but really - my 2-year-old still finds non-toy items more fascinating than actual toys, even though she has loads and loads of stuff to play with. Not something I would invest in heavily. Check out garage sales and second-hand stores for very gently used items, and don't spend a lot if you buy things brand new. It is just not worth it. When my oldest daughter was 9 or 10 months old her favorite thing ever was this silly plastic tube my mom had lying around - it held a large spool of thread she used for one of her many sewing machines (she's a seamstress). She wouldn't put it down whenever we would visit.

Best of luck!

Where can I find a doll with hair and eyes that open and close?

Nani

Not the Barbie type and not an infant/baby doll type. The old fashioned type a little girl can play mommy with and put "little girl" type clothes and shoes and socks on. Do they still even make them? I don't care if it is caucasian or not.

Pullip dolls. They are very cute and can open and close their eyes and can wink. If u live in the u.s, I recomend buying from www.pullipstyle.com. They have reasonable prices and are very trusted. Pullip doll prices can range from $80-$2000 if u get a really rare one. Most are about $90 or $100. These prices are for the full sized doll (12 inch). There are also little pullips which are 4.5 inch and taeyangs (dunno if that is correctly spelled), which are the male version of pullips and dal, pullip's younger sister. Here are some pics:

What are good x-mas presents for a 6 month old girl?

Ickerbicke

My daughter will be 6mos old for Christmas and I was wondering what are good toys for 6 month old babies? I know she isn't old enough to understand the whole Santa thing, but I still want her to have a good and exciting xmas. What are good toys that are both fun but also help with her development? I know it may seem like a silly question, but I'm a first time mom trying to do things right.

Answer
I would just get a few things- she is so little and you're right- she dont understand yet. There will be so many years when she wants everything:)
My son was 8 mos his 1st Christmas and I got him a fisher price learning table- he really liked it and it helped him learn to stand. I also got some books and bath toys- he loved his bath! Teething toys were a big hit too. Even after all that, his favorite was rolling around on the floor w/all the wrapping paper! Have fun and enjoy it! Take lots of pictures:)

My four month old daughter has very spastic hand/arm movements like she cant control them. And she was doing very good eating stage one baby food but recently, in the past two weeks or so, she has been having a hard time doing what looks like swallowing. Her tongue just pushes the food out of her mouth. When she concentrates on a toy, she can bring her hands to it but then soon drops it because her arms spaz. Is this normal or should talk to a doctor about possible signs of a tic?

Answer
If she is pushing food out with her tongue SHE IS NOT READY FOR SOLIDS. Forcing solids at this stage damages her natural gag reflex. Babies loose the 'tongue thrust reflex' around 4-7 months. This is a natural reflex that all babies have, and will go away on its own.

As for the spasms, she is still young. You can ask the doc for better advice on this.

How can I help my husband realize that I don't hate his penis?

G

We are having a son soon and I don't want him circumcised. My husband does, but I think he's given up arguing with me because he knows I firmly believe routine infant circumcision is bad and I wouldn't stand for anyone to do that to our son. The problem is that my husband was circumcised as a baby and now he thinks I hate his penis because I don't want our son circumcised. I have used such words as "mutilation" and "abuse" to describe circumcision. He thinks that I think he is inadequate now and not good enough for me and less of a man. I love my husband (and his penis) and I hate that he thinks these things! What can I say/do to help him realize I don't hate his penis just because I want my son to have the opportunity to make his own decision regarding his foreskin??
I've told him, he just doesn't believe me..... :-/

Answer
Your situation is very common. It's called Adamant Father Syndrome. The best thing you could do is show him videos of it being done. I was almost in the same situation as you, but made him change his mind. I told him the truth about circumcision - they cut off 20,000 nerve endings and in comparison a clitoris has 8,000. The ridged band in the tip of the foreskin has 10-12,000 nerve endings, and in that sense is the male equivalent of a clitoris. In a circumcision it must be cut through before being removed. Back then they didn't know as much about circumcision as they do now. Back then parents had that excuse that they didn't know, but these days that's different. These days they've mapped the penis sensitivity, counted the nerve endings under a microscope, they've had infants monitored for heartrate, cortisol (stress hormone), blood oxygen saturation level and screaming with various painkillers and have come to the conclusion circumcision is indeed the most pain a human being can go through and the pain alone makes it very dangerous (on top of bleeding - hypovolemic shock is very common) for babies.

Back then circumcision was the majority. These days intact is the majority. Back then people thought circumcision is cleaner, these days they know intact is cleaner. And back then most parents had never seen a circumcision being done and they didn't know what it involves. Back then they used to think you had to retract an intact boy's foreskin, which brought about a lot of problems with infection and phimosis and balanitis. These days they know and teach parents (well if their knowledge is up to date) never, ever retract and only clean what you see.

Times have changed, and you don't look at your son sexually, you're thinking about him among his peers.

http://www.circumcisionquotes.com/patricia.html As you can see, she was told it was healthy and painless. These days they know better.

http://www.drmomma.org/2010/01/cut-vs-intact-outcome-statistics.html cut vs intact outcome statistics

At the end of the day, he needs to start thinking like a father. Considering the different generational differences, and what is known about circumcision, he needs to understand that his responsibility is to your son, and to protect him, and keep up-to-date with knowledge about baby care. Like back then, they used to tell women almost how not to breastfeed successfully, hence many women failed and resorted to bottle-feeding. Does he intend to make you follow the same advise as his mother? Back then they weaned babies onto solids at 4 months old. Now they know better and have realized that before 6 months can really affect the body permanently (and many adults ARE suffering the affects). Does he intend on making you feed him at 4 months old? Back then they thought it kept babies happy to be surrounded by toys in the crib. Now they know that is often fatal. Does he intend on making sure your son is surrounded by teddy bears just like many people used to? The bottom line is that some things are different. Circumcision is one of them.

Put simply, you not putting your baby boy through the pain and trauma has NOTHING to do with your husband's penis. It's not about hang-ups or sexual preferences, it's about good PARENTING.

Could you offer any suggestions to make the trip smooth on traveling by airplane with a 10.5 month old?

Belle Z.

We are traveling via airplane with our 10.5 month old daughter for a 4 hour flight and I am looking for pointers to make the trip smooth. We have requested aisle seat. She is traveling in our lap.
Do you think giving a bottle with formula during take off and landing is wise or would you think juice/water is better? Also, I am going to pack finger food snacks and a few small toys for the trip. We are gate checking her stroller as well.

Thank You!

Answer
Well it sounds like you have it pretty much worked out so far. :)
Since this is only a four hour flight I'm assuming that you are taking a domestic flight which would rule out asking for a bulk head seat. Depending on the aircraft you are flying on you can still request it. Believe me. Everybody on that flight wants a happy baby too! :)
I would recommend feeding a formula bottle on take-off, especially if it will help her sleep. If you take a tired baby on a flight and get her tummy full on take-off chances are you'll be blessed and have a very smooth flight with a zonked out lap-infant.
Goodluck!

What kind of toys worked when flying with kids(less than a year old) on long flights ?

I have a 10 month old, will be flying to Asia, I have purchased a seat for her but she does not enjoy being strapped in the car seat for long. I am contemplating checking in the car seat, at the same time wondering if the airlines provides you with necessary things to secure a child this young ? My first time flying with her so want to do every bit of research so make the journey comfortable for her and other fellow passengers. Please feel free to pass on any tips as well. Thanks.

Answer
We’ve only flown with a really young child once, and it wasn’t as long of a flight as you’ll be taking. My son was 13 months old, so a little older than your baby.

We checked the car seat and did not bring it on the plane. We’d flown with our daughter once when she was a toddler and used the car seat on the plane. It was awful--the seats are so close together that she literally had nowhere to put her feet. The man sitting in front of her insisted on reclining his seat, which made it worse. If she bumped his seat (which she could not help doing every time she moved), he turned around and glared at us. He even made a few comments about it, and when I tried to explain that it wasn’t the poor kid’s fault, he got very huffy. We decided to never try to bring a car seat on the plane again. I don’t know why the airlines suggest it, when they don’t even fit onto those stupid seats!

To keep my son occupied--we brought along a few quiet toys, some small books, and LOTS of snacks. It’s not a tactic I normally use, but to keep him happy on the plane I pulled out something new each time he got restless. His favorite activity was searching for Cheerios in a small box. I’d put a few Cheerios at a time into the little box, and he’d dig around for them. We also brought some of those Crayola Color Wonder markers and paper. The markers only write on the paper, so don’t make a mess. Your baby might be a bit young for something like that, but if she is starting to enjoy scribbling on paper, the markers might keep her busy for a while.

I’d suggest getting some small, inexpensive, quiet toys that your daughter has never seen before. They will be new to her and more interesting than her own toys. Pull them out one at a time, as needed, whenever she gets restless. She’ll probably also like playing with your keys or your cell phone--my kids always liked those things more than they liked their toys! Bring along some picture books that are new to her as well. The novelty of everything will keep her occupied for longer.

Also, it’s a good idea to have something on hand for your child to drink during take-off and landing so her ears don’t hurt. I don’t know what the current regulations are for bring things like juice boxes or bottles onto an airplane, but make sure you check that on the airline’s website before you leave.

ps you might want to pack some Advil or Tylenol for yourself. :)

How much to sell baby things for at a yard sell?

Mama Dukes

I have a TON of clothes, toys, an exersaucer, cradle swing..etc. I plan on having my first yard sell in October, but I have no clue how to price things. Some of the clothes still have tags and some new without the tags. Obviously the toys and the other baby things have been used, but are in good condition.

Any help?

Answer
I recently had a garage sale, and this is how I priced Hannah's clothes, and they flew out the door!

Basic clothes and brands (Carters, Old Navy, stuff from Kohl's and Target, some Baby gap)
Onsies (nicer ones, not plain white), pants, skirts, tops $ .50 each
One piece outfits $ .75 each

For nicer outfits like Ralph Lauren, Gymboree, Janie and Jack~I put the outfit in a gallon size storage bag, and labeled the brand, # of pieces (pants, shirt, socks) and the size. I priced them between $2.00 and $10.00 an outfit.

Coats I priced from $3.00 - $15.00. I got $15.00 for a Hanna Anderson snowsuit, and $10.00 for a wool baby gap coat.

Shoes: infant crib shoes $ .50 each. Nicer shoes between $2.00 - $5.00

At first I had a hard time letting go of clothes for these prices...I thought, Way too cheap!! But the more I realized that I wasn't getting ANY money for them sitting in my basement collecting dust, the easier it was to part with.

I sold clothes from newborn-2T, plus coats, shoes, books and toys and made almost $400.00.

Make sure you advertise your garage sale on craiglist for free, including the sizes of clothing you have, and brands. I had a TON of people emailing me about them, and they were lined up outside my door before the sale started!

Also, you can also come down on your prices if it isn't moving. We priced everything to move in the sale.

how old was your youngest child when you finally got rid of the last of the infant toys?

desmeran

we're well past infancy, and i just realized how many totally outgrown items are clogging up my basement. i blame you people for distracting me.

Answer
Three and half or four. We sold them at the neighbor's yard sale. Between the toys and old clothes, the kid made thirty bucks. They were thrilled to be rid of them.

What is the best car seat toy for a forward facing carseat?

I am going to be getting my son a new car seat because he no longer fits in his old one. The new one is forward facing. In the old car seat, we have a bar that has rattles and a light up musical frog that my son loves to play with. Anyone have any ideas for an awesome car seat toy? I'm looking for the best one out there, one that I haven't seen on my google searches. Thank you!!

Answer
When deciding on any toy to be allowed in the car, think about what's going to happen in an accident and it goes flying. This will sound silly, but its a simple test to decide whether it should be allowed as a toy in the car: smack yourself upside the head with it. did it hurt? If not, go for it, if it hurt you, think about how much more it will hurt a baby, whose skull is softer, and when in an accident it will hit with a lot more force. Ican't at all remember who made them, but check your local kids resale shop (like Once Upon a Child) since they seem to have them often: soft toy steering wheels so child can play-drive while in the car.

However, a bigger issue here, would be how old is your child and what size? Sounds like he's outgrowing an infant carrier car seat? Kids do not go from infant carrier seat straight to forward facing seat. The next step is a rear facing convertible car seat. Most state laws require kids to be rear facing until at least 20lbs and 1 year, but more importantly, the laws of physics say kids should stay rear facing as long as they possibly can. Its THAT much safer. The old 20lbs/1 year rule is just that. OLD. It came about in the 1980's when our seats were only capable of rear facing to 20lbs and we didn't know any better. Now we definitely know better and all current convertible seats rear face to at least 30lbs, but its hard getting people to realize this.
Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child's life!
1)A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age.
2)A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
3)Current research suggests that children under the age of two years are 75 percent less likely to die or be seriously injured when they are riding rear facing.
4)In a recent article from Injury Prevention, it was found that the odds of severe injury to forward facing children age 12-23 months old was 5.32 times higher than a rear facing child. (Car Safety Seats For Children: Rear Facing For Best Protection; Injury Prevention 2007; 13:398-402.)

It works this way: when you get in an accident and run into something, the car stop suddently, but everything and everyone in the car keeps moving in the direction the car was moving when it stopped, in most accidents, this is forward. So in an accident with a child in a forward facing seat, his head, the heaviest part of the body on babies and toddlers, flies forward very forcefully and easily snaps. If that same child is in a rear facing seat, his head tries to fly forward but is supported by the back of the rear facing seat, so there is no stress put on the child's neck and spine.

Check out this photo album exclusively of rear facing kids, many of them much older than 12 months: http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/RFAlbum.aspx There isn't a single documented case of a child breaking their legs b/c they were rear facing in an accident. There are, however, lots of cases where children have been killed and seriously injured where a rear facing seat would have protected them better. And most kids actually prefer to be rear facing b/c they can rest their feet on the vehicle seat back. When they are forward facing, their legs don't receive enough support and will frequently fall asleep.
WHY REAR FACING:
http://www.carseat.org/Resources/633.pdf
In the foreground is a forward facing seat, in the background a rear facing seat. You can see how much trauma the forward facing dummy has to endure. The rear facing child simply rides it out.
http://www.oeamtc.at/netautor/html_seiten/kisitest_2002/videos/test2002/frontcrash/maxicosipriori.mpg

Here's another video. You can see how there is NO trauma to the baby, it simply sits there waiting for it to end.

How can I move without moving bedbugs in to?

Love

I have a four month old so I'm not sure how much spraying and bombing can be done. We are getting rid of the couch which is where they were first.
We have a lot of baby stuff, and all of it is coming with us, that's a crib, loads of clothes and diapers (I stocked up before she was born), toys, both plastic and stuffed animals. Gettin rid of the stuffed animals is not an option as they are very special.
In our room there are at least 200 books, both hard and soft cover that my husband will not get rid of. Then we have a night stand, dresser, and bed frame. There are also clothes and dream catchers.
We have two infant car seats that stay in the house unless we're going somewhere. A bassinet, bouncer and a large swing that has a frame I'm worried they could get into, the christmas tree and christmas ornaments are also sittin in a corner of the living room since we have no storage. We also have a large entertainmment center but I'm going to talk to my husband about getting rid of that.
Electronics: microwave, 2 coffee pots (my husand and I drink different stuff), a hair dryer, lap tops, baby monitor, tv, humidifier and DS. How do I make sure they're not in my electronics
oh, and some of my daughter's toys are stuffed animals with rattles in those, can those be dried in high heat?? And there are two guitars, one bass one electric

Answer
It is an easy job. If you stop bites immediately and leave CO2 traps. You will kill 100% bed bugs within 3 months. You don't need to dump anything.

Bed bugs hide behind wall, under carpet, in a laptop, and in everywhere. It is non sense to kill them by chemicals or steamer on contact only and let survived bugs bite and lay up to 300 eggs per bug.

Most people don’t know how to kill bed bugs inside laptops or how to stop bites immediately even bed bugs migrate from other apartments tonight. You don’t need to search any bed bugs and should have solved bed bug problem now if you received right tool today. I have a tattoo similar to this one: http://peachytattoos.com/peachy-tattoos-blog/2011/11/2/dreamcatcher-tattoo-native-american-tattoo.html

and I want to add something onto my front shoulder, I was thinking of more roses running across and down a little but what other good options could i do?

NEED SOME IDEAS
Okay for the ignorant people I am actually half Native American.... I didn't know words could show someone's ethnicity ?

And a dream catcher is a lot more than a baby's decoration toy, there are many meanings behind it. If you're going to be shallow please don't even comment because your wasting my time, thanks

Answer
Do you know what a dreamcatcher is? It's a infant's cradle decoration, like a crib mobile. nothing more. It has no magic powers or special meanings. It is laughable how white people have become obsessed with dream catchers, and adults all want to own them.

So you have a tattoo of a baby's toy? Why not get a pacifier and a baby bottle to go with it?

or the words- "white girl who knows nothing about native culture but wants to appropriate it anyway" ?

Oh, wait, you don't need the words, the tat says it all.

I am starting an in-home daycare in Jan 2011, but interviewing parents now. Should I make them pay a deposit?

Hailey B

My daycare opens Jan 3rd. But I am beginning to interview now and I have been flooded with calls. I am starting to interview on Monday if the parents decide to go with me should I make them put down a deposit to hold their child's spot so I know they are serious? If so how much per child and should I put it towards their first week of care or should i keep it and put it towards daycare odds and ends? My full-time rates are as follows. Infant (6wks-12months)- $110/week, Toddler (12months-2years)- $115/week, Preschool (2-5years) $120/week, School aged (5-12years)- $100/week Hope this info helps!!!

Answer
Usually you can charge a "Materials Fee" - many private schools do this as well as daycares. It pays for arts and crafts supplies, books, even toys.

Consider the fact though that you aren't up and running yet though - so there's nothing the parents can even see. It might be important to have a little good faith with them like they're having with you.

Any suggestions please?

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I now fly a lot with my own three children. We usually travel between Europe and California about twice a year.

Seven months is actually a good age to travel. It gets trickier when they can run! You may have him crawling all over the place but for the most part, you'll be able to keep up with him.

I have never used any sort of medications to get my children to sleep on any of those flights. At that age especially, they do nodd off at some point of the journey, more if it's at night.

I also think he's too young for a portable DVD player. I got one when my youngest was 3 years old. They are kind of heavy to cart around and could easily break. How much screen watching does he do? Mine were not very interested, especially with a small screen, at that age.

Bring a few quiet toys but a small selection. Again, short attention spans and he'll be more interested in his new surroundings.

First of all, I really recommend bringing a car seat and using it onboard. Make sure your car seat is approved for use on aircraft. If you're flying on a U.S. company, see the below link for information on if it's approved. Most car seats, including infant buckets, sold in the U.S. are.

http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

If you are flying a non-U.S. company, see the information for your airline. If you search with the name of the airline, followed by "children", that will usually give you the right page.

This way, the seat will get to your destination without risking it being damaged or lost in luggage. On my last transatlantic with my kids, three of our four bags didn't make it but since we had the car seat with us, my daughter was safe for the 2 hour drive home (the bags arrived 2 days later). I saw at least two other seats while looking for our luggage. Wonder how they got home?

If you don't have a seat for him, request it at check-in. Ask if the flight is full, and if not, they can "block" the seat next to you, only using it if they really need it. They often do this for families.

Bring the seat to the gate, even if they are unsure that you'll get a seat. This way, if you don't manage it, they will "gate check" your seat, sending it down with the strollers and wheelchairs. This is gentlier than checking it in at the desk.

I also recommend trying to sit at the bulkhead. These are the seats with the wall in front, located in different places depending on the aircraft. Bulkheads are easier with children since no one is leaning in front of you and there's probably room to crawl on the floor.

If you have a travel system, you can use the stroller until you get to the door of the aircraft and then it'll be "gate checked". If not, use a stroller frame for a infant seat. You'll have it again, by the door of the aircraft when you arrive. If you have a convertible car seat (going to 40lbs), there are a number of contraptions you can use to wheel it around. I simply strap mine to a small metal luggage cart and that works great.

If you do have a stroller, bring a bungee cord and double secure it before leaving it at the door of the plane. They can get damaged if they pop open en route. Make sure the claim ticket can be seen and isn't squished or hidden. Be sure to ask when disembarking where the stroller is.

Bring at least 1/3 more diapers than you think you'll need. I saw so many parents run out on flights when I was working! Wrap them in plastic bags and throw a bunch of rubber bands around them to save room in your carry-on.

For a formula fed baby, I really recommend using the bottles with plastic liners. Traditional bottles are too difficult to wash onboard because of the kind of sinks on airplanes. I premeasured the powder and rolled them up, placing the rolls in a ziplock bag. Then you throw the liners away as you use them and only have the ring and nipple to clean.

If you use bottled water, be sure to give yourself enough time to buy some once you're past security. Make sure you have enough! The water on the aircraft is filtered tap so decide if you're comfortable using that for your baby. Bottled water runs out fast on flights and we never had any extra for baby bottles.

Be sure you baby does not need the bottle warmed. Get him used to a room-temperature bottle before leaving. This is unnecessary health-wise and a real pain to do while travelling. I warmed many bottles on my flights but I wasn't there in the check-in line, the security line or the waiting area! Babies do great with room-temperature bottles.

Make sure you have at least one change of clothes. I would bring two. At that age, I simply dressed mine in sleep suits for flying. No one will care so keep him comfortable. Bring extra socks if he crawls so that he doesn't pick up anything nasty on the floor and to keep his hands clean.

Hopefully you have a good baby carrier. They're so useful for flying, especially at this age. I had a sling but other parents swear by their wraps and pouches. The Ergo and Beccos are other popular carriers for travel that go on the back.

I liked the sling because I could slide my babies from into and out of a stroller or car seat without waking them. It also doubled as a blanket, baby changer, breastfeeding cover-up and sunshade! My sling was magic for calming my babies during the flight. Other parents wanted one when they saw how easy it made my travels. Avoid front packs like the Bjorn since they're so bad for both the parents' and child's back. A good carrier should go to at least age 2.

Many flying tips say to make the child suck on something or drink during take-off and landing. This isn't accurate. ENT specialists say to have the child awake about an hour before landing (top of descent, landing or touch-down is too late).

http://www.entcda.com/AAOHNSF/earsandaltitude.htm

I can confirm that is when I saw problems at work. Take your child to the doctor in the last few days before you fly to make sure his ears are clear and infection-free. Heathy ears can handle pressurization changes.

About 8 years ago, I wrote an article on flying with children for an expat newsletter. Over the years many parents have contributed, both on line and in Real Life. I later put it on a blog so that parents had access to non-commercial information from someone with both practical and professional experience on the web.

Have a great trip!

What am I allowed to take on an airplane?

mypinktvto

I have never been and my first trip will be in May and only across the US. What are basic rules everyone knows? I'm going to take one bag so is there a weight limit for it? How big a bag am I allowed for carry on? Am I allowed toothbrush, shaving razor, shampoos? What if I bring a sex toy (will they take it or say anything to me?) Anything else you can think of helps me a lot. I appreciate it. (obviously no weapons lol)

Answer
The main rule is the 3-1-1 rule. All liquids/gels/aerosols in your carry-on have to be in a container no bigger than 3.4 oz and all containers must fit inside a single 1-qt ziploc bag. So shampoo, shaving cream, toothpaste, etc. counts and needs to be in the above-size container. These limits don't apply to your checked luggage and there are some exceptions to this size rule (medications, formula for infants, etc.) The TSA website below explains it in more detail. The razor is ok as long as it is a safety razor with a cartridge (the kind most people use as opposed to a straight razor). The sex toy is fine. The size of your carry-on will depend on the airline, though most airlines say it cannot be larger than 45 linear inches (length + width + depth). You can check your airline's website for their exact baggage policy. The websites below are helpful for deciding what you can/cannot bring and give tips for getting through security.

My daughter is 12 mos, I used to nurse her back to sleep, but learned how it was a bad habit so I stopped, but she still cant fall asleep without me rocking her to sleep or singing to her. Once i finally get her to sleep, she wakes up every 2-3 hours to make sure im still there. She will sleep in her crib for a while, but wake up and stand up and scream and call for me. So i usually get up and rock her back to sleep and put her back in her crib. She has only slept in her crib throughout the night, without waking up, once in her lifetime! its so frustrating.. Any good advice?

Answer
Sounds exactly like my own daughter!

Your daughter is in her separation anxiety phase, so it is normal for her to wake up more often and to wonder where did Mommy disappear and why she is all alone in hte dark

Add teething to that anxiety, and you know why she is waking up more often!

--------------

First things first:

Before sleeping well at night, she needs to sleep well during the day.

At night you might want to try:

-Supper

-Bath

-Collation (sometimes baby are hungry and it wakes them up, banana or yogourt fill their stomach!)

-Book,couple of songs

Caillou book : Time for Bed is the most wonderful thing as your baby will relate to Caillou going to bed. And the illustrations ar wonderful.

-Review her day with her, and end by telling her it is time to sleep, that her (name each of her favorite toys/friends) are sleeping

And you can tell her : Caillou is sleeping too

-Tell her you will rock her and that after that you will put her in her bed

-Put baby in the bed while awake but sleepy

-Always use the same words when you put her in her bed

(ex: Sweet dreams honey, Mommy is there, Daddy is there, you can sleep now)

She will cry and protest loudly but will finally fall asleep on her own.

If Daddy can do the sleep routine the first few days, it will help her dissociate your presence from falling asleep.

When she wakes up during the night,go quickly to reassure her (once she gets that you havent disappear, she willl needs less and less to wake up to confirm you are still existing)

It is very important since she is in her anxiety separation stage.

If you are tired, it's OK to bring her to your bed. Both of you will sleep.

----------------------

Start by doing it for the naps first, when you are less tired and have more will power to endure.

Do not worry if one day or one week you dont have the energy to deal with that, you'll do it another day

It is very very important that you can get some sleep, so try taking naps when she is sleeping.

You wont be able to cope without sleep

----------------

Separation anxiety is a very difficult stage for the mom, but once your baby grow out of it, you know that she will be an happy, secure baby that has integrated that her mommy is there for her.

It is the base for a good self-esteem and internal security, feeling of being loved and protected

Your daughter is 12 months, so this phase will soon start to decrease.

One day, you will be surprise to see that she has not awake as much, and that she is sleeping almost all night long.

It will come sooner that you expected

Selling a Traditional Product on the Internet - Business Ideas

When we say "traditional", we simply mean a physical product that you would ship to your customers.

How to Work from Home - I Need to Make Money Now

The Upside
- It can be exciting to develop and produce your own product, if that's the route you take.
- If you don't want to develop your own product or keep inventory, you can find companies that dropship. Dropshipping means the manufacturer or wholesaler will ship the product directly to your customers upon ordering

The Downside
- You will have the additional work of packing & shipping your products, unless you rely on dropshipping.
- You will need the storage space for products & packing materials, unless you rely on dropshipping.
- Product sales tend to have a lower profit margin than electronic products or services

Biz Tips
- Don't overwhelm yourself by trying to sell every related product. Fill out your offerings by choosing products from companies that dropship or have affiliate programs.
- Try to choose a unique product that people can't buy at a local store. If they can buy it at a store today, why would they wait for you to ship it to them in a few weeks?

Answer
Infants: Place baby on their tummy in a safe area on the floor. Get down on their level and talk to your baby to encourage her to raise her head and chest off the floor. Add to this activity as your baby grows by placing colorful toys just out of reach to encourage scooting and crawling.

1-year old children: include block play, filling and emptying containers, hide-and-seek and rolling and catching a ball, according to the National Network for Child Care. Play music and dance with your child to encourage movement.

2-year-old: needs opportunities to challenge and build upon his gross and fine motor skills. Sand and water play helps toddlers develop hand/eye coordination and encourage fine motor development. Clapping games such as pat-a-cake also promote coordination. Activities that involves running, jumping or climbing are appropriate for toddlers.

Preschoolers develop fine motor skills through art activities using crayons, glue, scissors and/or paint, and through dress-up activities. Riding toys, swings and climbing structures help children gain strength, dexterity and coordination. Walking a chalk line or playing hopscotch helps preschoolers develop balance and coordination.

Cognitive Development
Activities that engage children in problem-solving, sorting, classifying, understanding and using information promote cognitive development, according to Child Care Help. Playing peek-a-boo with your infant encourages intellectual development as he begins to understand how you disappear and reappear. Shape-sorters help toddlers and older infants to develop problem-solving skills. Age-appropriate puzzles, matching games, sorting games and block play engage toddlers and preschoolers in activity that requires them to work intellectually through a problem.

Creative Development
Creative development thrives in an environment where children can safely express their curiosity, explore and play. Open-ended art, music, movement and dance activities breed creative expression. To encourage and foster creative development, you must allow children to explore and express their own ideas. Give infants opportunities to make choices, and to listen and move to music. Provide age-appropriate art materials such as scissors, glue, crayons, markers, paper, paint and sponges for older children, and allow them to create freely. Invite children to make up a story, use instruments and move freely to music to help them develop confidence in their own ideas and expression.

what is Piagetian process or concept. and what is the child’s most likely stage of development in this example?

Answer
Piaget's 'Four levels of development' are (1) infancy, (2) preschool, (3) childhood, and (4) adolescence. Each stage is characterized by a general cognitive structure that affects all of the child's thinking (a structuralist view influenced by philosopher Immanuel Kant)[citation needed]. Each stage represents the child's understanding of reality during that period, and each but the last is an inadequate approximation of reality. Development from one stage to the next is thus caused by the accumulation of errors in the child's understanding of the environment; this accumulation eventually causes such a degree of cognitive disequilibrium that thought structures require reorganizing.

The four development stages are described in Piaget's theory as:

Sensorimotor stage: from birth to age 2. Children experience the world through movement and senses (use five senses to explore the world). During the sensorimotor stage children are extremely egocentric, meaning they cannot perceive the world from others viewpoints and explore using senses. The sensorimotor stage is divided into six substages: "(1) simple reflexes; (2) first habits and primary circular reactions; (3) secondary circular reactions; (4) coordination of secondary circular reactions; (5) tertiary circular reactions, novelty, and curiosity; and (6) internalization of schemes." [4] Simple reflexes is from birth to 1 month old. At this time infants use reflexes such as rooting and sucking. First habits and primary circular reactions is from 1 month to 4 months old. During this time infants learn to coordinate sensation and two types of scheme (habit and circular reactions). A primary circular reaction is when the infant tries to reproduce an event that happened by accident (ex: sucking thumb). The third stage, secondary circular reactions, occurs when the infant is 4 to 8 months old. At this time they become aware of things beyond their own body; they are more object oriented. At this time they might accidentally shake a rattle and continue to do it for sake of satisfaction. Coordination of secondary circular reactions is from 8 months to 12 months old. During this stage they can do things intentionally. They can now combine and recombine schemes and try to reach a goal (ex: use a stick to reach something). They also understand object permanence during this stage. That is, they understand that objects continue to exist even when they can't see them. The fifth stage occurs from 12 months old to 18 months old. During this stage infants explore new possibilities of objects; they try different things to get different results. During the last stage they are 18 to 24 months old. During this stage they shift to symbolic thinking. [4]
Preoperational stage: from ages 2 to 5 (magical thinking predominates. Acquisition of motor skills) Egocentricism begins strongly and then weakens. Children cannot conserve or use logical thinking.
Concrete operational stage: from ages 5 to 11 (children begin to think logically but are very concrete in their thinking) Children can now conserve and think logically but only with practical aids. They are no longer egocentric.
Formal operational stage: after age 11 (development of abstract reasoning). Children develop abstract thought and can easily conserve and think logically in their mind.

Answer
The Best Teething Toys

By Miebeth Bustillo-Booth, ChildTrek Founder

Natural & Wood Teethers
The best teething toys are made of natural materials like wood. Wood is naturally anti-bacterial. (That’s why there are wooden cutting boards.) So it is self-cleaning. Wood is hard and will help ease teeth in. But not all wood toys are ideal. The best wooden teething toys are either unfinished or lightly finished with beeswax, water-based stains, or other non-toxic paints. It’s best to gain the manufacturer statements to this effect. At ChildTrek, only toys that have met or exceeded safety standards are available.

Great Teething Toys
Grabbing Toy Giraffe with Wooden Teething Ring by Kathe KruseConsider the Infant Grabbing Toy Mah or Giraffe by Kathe Kruse. They are made out of non-porous beech wood, lightly finished with beeswax, and made using non-toxic dyes. There are no harmful chemicals to leach out while your baby gnaws on the hard wood. The wooden ring is extra large for easy handling by small hands. The lamb and the giraffe can be removed for machine or hand wash. And they are completely adorable!

The Grabbing Star Red or Blue also by Kathe Kruse has a wooden teething ring and interesting textures for early learning stimulation. A special feature is a velcro loop at one of the star ends so that it can be fastened as a stroller toy. This achieves a couple of things: the teether is always nearby and it doubles as a grabbing toy. Smart!

Girali Rattle by SelectaThe Girali Rattle by Selecta, aside from being a practical teething toy, is uniquely beautiful. It is made of native woods from Germany and finished with beeswax and non-toxic paints - completely safe for your baby.

Also, it’s hard to beat the Cherry Rattle by Camden Rose. It is lightly finished with beeswax. Its contoured design makes for interesting tactile stimulation. Its gentle rattle is soothing. As a teether - it is naturally hard to facilitate teething. Watch as your baby gnaws on this beautiful toy for hours.

Cold and Soothing
Organic Vegetabe Teethers by Under the NileOne of my personal favorites for the summer are the organic teethers by miYim and Under the Nile. Take the Bunny, Elephant, or Bear teether. Dampen, not soak it. Put it in the freezer. Then let your baby gnaw on this cool toy to help soothe tender gums. Do the same for the Fruits or the Vegetables by Under the Nile. Besides gently soothing for your baby, you are teaching your baby to “eat” his or her fruits and veggies!

Vary Teethers
It’s best to keep a few different teethers around that have varying textures and hardness. Some teeth come in easier than others. The molars, for example, are especially hard on infants.

Can you work at a Montessori school with a associate degree in early childcare education?

Bana

I am currently getting a early childcare associate degree and for some reason Montessori learning really stuck out to me as fun. Can i work in it with just a associate degree?

Answer
The curriculum is actually very tedious/repetative and time consuming (a true montessori program has no time limits and wants kids to learn individually or in very small groups of 2 or 3 with hours at a time for one activity), and I think to teach Montessori at a center, preschool, or elementry school you need to go to a special montessori teaching school or get a special certificate/teaching credential (thats what one of my CD professors said).

Montessori also focus's too much on structered individual play with little to no unstructered group play- which is important too for building problem solving skills and creativity. I worked as a fieldtrip tour guide at an activity tourist property and I had different groups- FCC's with Infants/Toddlers, Preschools, Public schools, Private schools, and even 1 private Montessori school and those Montessori kids were the most out of control- they were hurting each other and running around chasing birds and the teachers didn't do much because I was on time schedual and had to transition kids to about 9 or 10 different activities in less than 2 hours. There are a few aspects of it I like, such as using natural materials (wooden toys/natural wool or cotton fabrics) and the child sized furnature. but not so much the long untimed projects (that was developed because the children she toughter were seen as "mentally retarded" by the public- but it is unrealistic in today's fast pace school and work environments; how will children adapt to middle school? High school? College? Workforce?) but I would say if you don't want to get a special certificate just try to adopt a play-based or Nature-based curriculum using the aspects of her teachings you like.
