Are there any daycare owners on here?

dreamee

I'm planning to open a daycare in August 2010. I'm thinking about buying a house in a commercial area. I want to start by having no more than 25 children from the ages of 6 wks-18 months. I think it would be cheaper since I wouldn't have to worry about so many toilets per child, food, playground equipment, field trips, etc. I would like to expand maybe after three years to include older children. Do anyone think this is a good way to start?

Answer
I definitely think your plan can work. Make sure you are doing as much research and gathering as much information as you can right now.

Infant care is in high demand and many places only do preschool aged children and up. I don't know that it will be cheaper because infants usually require a higher ratio (one adult for every 4 infants is typical) while older children can be watched by fewer adults. However, you will be able to charge a lot more to watch infants than you could for older children.

Start saving your money now. The more money you have saved (and don't have to take out in loans) the better. If you are planning on opening a daycare in a low income area, you may also be able to get a grant. You need to research and apply for grants early. Start collecting baby equipment, toys, and books now. You won't want to buy everything new, but slowly collect it through garage sales, donations, etc. You have to do everything you can to keep your initial costs down (you can always upgrade later). Buying a house is a good idea (as long as you get a good deal and can afford the payments initially even without the daycare income).

Contact the agency that licenses programs in your state and get some initial feedback and information about what you are wanting to do so you can start the approval process. You will need one year of hard work to be able to open your doors.

Do y'see the love in this one?!?

The Feeling of Done

Sometimes, like an architect
where my write is the ribbon
on opening day;
sometimes just fully spent,
and my poem is the towel to
wipe my tears away!

Sometime, the fool drunkard
inebriated by this cocktail
penned to true love;
sometimes the wolfish glutton
who writes and writes but
never gets enough.

Sometimes a wee small infant
a strange format my newest toy to
learn to rattle;
and sometimes I am a warrior,
with cause shield and word sword brandished
well in battle!

Travelling overseas with an infant?

Elisabeth

I would like to bring my 3 boys who will be almost 5, 2.5, and 7-8 months next summer when I would like to visit family in France. My father and sister have never met any of our boys and I would like for them to meet their cousins. They aren't financially able to come here, so it would only be possible if we went there. My problem lies in the fact that my youngest will be so young when we travel next summer, as well as my rambunctious older boys. Do you think it will be possible? Do you have any suggestions for a long plane ride, which will be approximately 13 hours total.

Answer
Bien sûr!

I take my three children approximately the same age alone on 11 1/2 hour flights about twice a year. I've been doing this since each was 4 months old and like yours', mine are close in age.

I get a seat for my youngest. Once I flew Air France and they wouldn't guarantee that I could use my car seat so I flew with my 4 month old as a "lap baby". This is much less safe. Both for comfort and safety, having the seat is important. I don't know how I could have dealt with three small children without somewhere to put the little one. So now I book with Lufthansa and United, who let me use my American car seats on board.

Another reason to avoid Air France is the fact they let you bring your stroller to the gate but then they check it all the way through to your destination. Unless your final stop is Paris, you'll find yourself having to negotiate Charles de Gualle airport without a stroller and three small children. No thanks!

Your 2 1/2 year old can sit in the seat but you may want to look into a CARES harness.
http://www.kidsflysafe.com/
You can rent one on Ebay or Craigslist, especially if you're in N. America, if you don't want to buy one.

Arrange a car seat for your middle child and a booster for your oldest in France. Don't use car seats provided by a rental car company. These are really dire here in France.

Make sure you have a good baby carrier. Awful front packs like the Bjorn are too small. I had a sling and I could carry either of two children in it and it went to age 3. You might also look into a front/back soft carrier, like the Ergo. A wrap or pouch is also good. This way, my children alternated walking (those who could), riding in the stroller or were carried. As a Flight Attendant, I saw too many parents dashing through airports carrying heavy toddlers and babies. Don't be one of them!

I was able to manage with a single stroller but you can bring your double. Any stroller that folds is usually acceptable (but check your airlines' website).

I was able to manage with a big backpack and a diaper bag when I had two in diapers. I wrapped the diapers in plastic bags and bound them with rubber bands to make room in my carry-on.

I usually had a few brand new toys to give the older children, once we were on the plane. I also brought quiet, easy-to-pack toys like coloring things, stickers, pipe cleaners, small plastic animals or cars, etc. I found that simple things kept them occupied best. I did get a portable DVD player once they were older but my kids were not good "screen watchers" and not good about wearing the headphones (don't even think about playing it over the speakers).

For more information, nine years ago I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with children. It's totally non-commercial and other parents from around the world have contributed;
http://flyingwithchildren1.blogspot.com

C'est en anglais mais n'hestiatez pas de me contacter si vous avez encore des questions. Mon email est à la fin d'article. Je suis en France depuis 13 ans.

Bonne chance!

Any suggestions on traveling with infant on a plane?

I will be traveling ALONE with my 10 months old son for a 15 hours non-stop flight very soon. Any suggestions on how i can make it easier on myself and on him? I heard about the sucking bottle when take off and land to avoid his ear popping. The travel agent booked us the very last row. but then I heard that the best is the bulk head. I am not sure having a big screen in front of me and my baby though. He crawls everywhere. Not yet walking by himself. What do i do to entertain him? Can I bring a electronic toys on board? Is there any traveling gear that I should bring with me? I will have a travel system stroller and the car seat with me. I am afriaid it will be really tough when we get to the screening. Just a bit nervous since I will be going alone. That's a long flight too. Please help.

What are the changes in the baby 0-6 months?

irena_binj

newborn & baby
changes of the perimeter of the head
changes of the weight
and all the similar things

Answer
Infants cannot be "spoiled" if they are held too much. Babies need constant, loving and tender touches to build self-confidence, trust and communication. Loving touches like holding, cradling, hugs, kisses and gentle tickles are important to a babyâs development.

Talk to your baby a lot. Talk in complete sentences â even as you carry out your daily routine. Tell him about the weather or what youâre doing at the moment. Talk and describe things to him as you get dressed, drive or go shopping. When you talk, he learns the rhythms of language and words and the sound of your voice.

Itâs never too early to begin reading to your baby. Starting when she is a newborn, make reading an everyday experience. Read simple childrenâs stories or make up a story as you look at a picture book. If you are reading a book or newspaper, read it aloud so your baby can begin to hear the rhythm and pattern of language.

A babyâs vision is the first thing to develop. Give her lots of things to look at. Safely hang things above her crib such as paper plates - draw black and white patterns as well primary colors like red, yellow and blue on the plates. Hold an object 10 to 12 inches from her face and slowly move it back and forth. As she tries to follow your movement, she will build eye coordination and neck muscles.

Every time you change a diaper, sing a song or talk to baby. Gently tickle his tummy and feet, make bike-riding motions with his legs. Make eye contact and recite nursery rhymes or make up silly songs. Make the most of diaper changing â your baby is a captive audience!

Make sure your baby has "noisy" toys so she can hear different sounds. Make a rattle by putting a few beans in a tightly sealed plastic container. Securely sew small bells to her socks, booties or shoes. Always stay close and play with your baby when she uses toys to make sure she doesnât remove or swallow small parts.

Play "Peek-a-Boo" and "This Little Piggy" for as long as your baby laughs and enjoys the games. When he turns his head away, heâs had enough for now. Give him time to rest before the next play. For "This Little Piggy," gently wiggle each toe, starting with the big toe, as you say each line of the rhyme: "This little piggy went to market; this little piggy stayed home; this little piggy had roast beef; this little piggy had none; and this little piggy cried âwee, wee, weeâ all the way home!"

Make sounds that your baby can imitate. Repeat them and encourage her to make the sounds like you do.

Use bath time for learning fun. For small babies, float brightly colored sponges in the water. Cut new new household sponges in the shape of fish. Make up silly songs about the bath tub fish.

When taking baby outside for a walk, talk about what you see. Describe the green grass, sounds of birds, texture of bark and everything you can see, hear, touch or smell.

Smile at your baby as much as you can. Smiling at him will teach him to smile in return and sends a positive, approving message. Approval can also come from gentle hugs and pats.

When your baby makes noises at you, treat them as conversation. Talk back. Your response will help teach your baby how to relate to other people and starts to teach the basics of conversation.

Repeat, repeat and repeat again. Repetition helps all babies and toddlers form a strong foundation for learning and good behavior. Donât feel you always have to have a new story, new song or new activity. Children learn from repeated experiences.

Help your baby learn from gently experiencing different textures and temperatures. Guide babyâs hand to feel a soft, furry plush toy; hard, smooth plastic; cold ice; warm toast or rough carpet. Itâs important to describe what baby is feeling as she touches. Be careful that textures or temperatures are clean and safe and wonât hurt little hands.

Babies can be fascinated by mirrors. Hold your baby close to a mirror so he can see himself. Point out his eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Play pat-a-cake or other games so he can watch himself in action.

Help your babyâs physical activity through gentle pulls and pushes. Place your hand on the bottoms of babyâs feet so he can push against them. Gently bicycle his legs and move his arms. Clap his hands or move his feet to the beat of different kinds of music.

It is never too early for a baby to experience all kinds of music. Starting when sheâs newborn, let your baby hear music every day. Music from other world cultures as well as classical, jazz and popular music can come from the radio, tape or CD player, live performances or just you singing or humming. Make sure music is not too loud for little ears.

Cleaning infant toys?

Maddie's M

I've been cleaning my 5 months toys in soap and water. I told yesterday that it wasn't enough that I should be using Bleach and water. How do you clean toys?

Answer
I use the Clorox spray that santitizes but isn't bleach. I'm drawing a blank on the name- but it's very common. "anytime spray"- safe around pets/food/kids/etc
I use that- but not EVERYDAY time I wash the toys- and it also depends on the reason I'm washing them. If it's just becuse my son was playing in his crib with they toy and slobbered all over it- I use soap and water. If it's because he dropped it at the mall on floor or at the DR's office- I use the santizing spray. I used to ALWAYS use the sanitizing spray. I think some people thought I was crazy- I jsut wanted my son to have safe toys. But as he's gotten older and puts EVERYTHING in his mouth-I've realized that no matter how much you watch them, they are going to ocasionally get SOMETHING in their mouth that you wouldn't like them to. You're not too far off from that stage. I am still one of the most "anal" mothers about my sons things, I've just realized what's necessary and what's going overboard.
Use good judgement. Don't spend ALL of your energy cleaning your baby's toys- all that sanitizing/wahing/rinsing takes time. I swear I used to spend all day washing/cleaning/etc....
With that said- I still sterilize my son's bottles. He's 10 months old. I do it out of habit because we did it when he was a preemie baby. And I've just never thought to stop. Until tonight. And tomorrow I think I'm just going to start soap washing.

Clorox anytime sanitizing spray works great, is affordable and safer than bleach- plus it's already mixed. It's intended for toys.

Are parents aware of the harmful effects of lots of chemicals found in most plastic?

Stupid Sma

like ''Bisphenol A'' or 'BPA' and other chemicals like phthalates ?

''BPA is controversial because it exerts weak, but detectable, hormone-like properties, raising concerns about its presence in consumer products and foods contained in such products. Starting in 2008, several governments questioned its safety, prompting some retailers to withdraw polycarbonate products. A 2010 report from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raised further concerns regarding exposure of fetuses, infants, and young children.[1] In September 2010, Canada became the first country to declare BPA a toxic substance.[2][3] In the European Union and Canada, BPA use is banned in baby bottles.[4]''

Yup, thus why we only buy wooden toys and we make sure all of our plastic is BPA free, or buy glass/wood products where possible. We use glass baby bottles.

Please help.. My 14 months old daughter is delayed, autism?

Eyecandy77

My 14 months old daughter is delayed in her social skills and fine motor skills. She is not waiving, not clapping, not pointing, not self feeding. She will sometimes show where my eyes are or mouth, when I ask her, and she will look at a picture on the wall when I ask where the picture is. But she rarely pays any attention to me or anyone else. She loves to play with all her toys, but she doesn't do anything repeatedly (like pushing the same button over and over). When I talk to her or ask her something she ignores me, and continues to do what she was doing like playing with her toy or watching tv. When she watches her cartoons and I get in front of her to get her attention she completely ignores me like I'm a see-through ghost. I'm worried sick.. Has anyone had a kid who was delayed in these areas (waiving, paying attention to mommy, pointing etc), and now are older and normal? Or is she for sure has an autism. I've convinced myself that she does and can't stop panicing. I will make an apt with the neurologist tomorrow, and I was told by an Early Intervention program that she is significantly delayed in her social skills and fine motor skills such as picking up small cereal and putting them in her mouth. (she doesn't do that at all). She seems like normal happy baby to me, she loves it when I sing to her, she looks directly at me into my eyes when I sing, or when I do silly games. She loves pikaboo games and runs to me on her walker when I call her all excited. But when I talk to her most of the time ignores me. I would love to hear from someone who went through this and their kid turned out fine. Some words of encouragement also would help :( thank you so much. I am so afraid of what the neurologist would say. It seems like 100% of normal kids do all these things. If I can just find one who didn't do these things and turned out normal, I could breath just a little easier. Thanks again!
About vaccines etc.. We are on dr. Sears vaccine schedules and we haven't even gotten everything she needs. So I really don't think this could be from vaccines we are being very careful about them.

Answer
You are right to be concerned, but don't worry about this until you have done some homework and researched the issue. There is a wonderful web site you can visit to see the symptoms and what is being done to not only help autistic children but what can be done to prevent it.

Go to: www.childhoodshots.com

Mary Tocco has been researching vaccines for 30 years and has a volume of information on this subject. Her daughter, Rene Tocco, is the doctor that has dedicated her practice to AUTISM and that is the web site above. Many of the problems children are having today are a result of what is being done to the children in doctor's offices and the food they are eating and the lack of information on good breast feeding, etc.

Become educated, not indoctrinated.

EDIT: NO child needs ANY vaccine. It is a very well known documented fact that children who do not get vaccinated are far healthier and grow up much more healthy. Believe what you will about vaccines, but those promoting it is relying on indoctrination and distortion of the facts, not educated facts.

EDIT: Here's a wonderful article for you to read to get a better in depth understanding of why vaccines are causing many of the problems your child is experiencing.

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2010/11/01/flu-vaccine-and-its-side-effects.aspx

Dr. Sears is just spreading the poisons over longer time between getting the poison injections. Infants and babies should NOT be receiving these injections at all. Look at the evidence to learn the truth. Pediatricians were invented to inject poisons and nothing more. The well baby visits is just an injection party, nothing more.

If you are still in doubt about this, watch Dr. Maurice Hilleman that was the Number 1 vaccine expert, researcher, and developer of over 40 popular vaccines talk about the "Bargain Basement Technology" vaccines are in this confidential interview:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edikv0zbAlU

Now watch this video showing the probity of the Bayer Pharmaceutical that makes aspirin for the world and how they view PROFIT over HEALTH:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg-52mHIjhs&feature=related

Is it no wonder the public has started to reject what these guys are promoting?

Drug companies would have you believe their technology saved the world of disease, but nothing is farther from the truth. Look at this study on small pox that drug companies tell you they eradicated:

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2000/12/31/smallpox-vaccine-part-one.aspx

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2000/12/31/smallpox-vaccine2.aspx

Babies are being damaged by these corporations that are promoting this farce. BIG MONEY is being made by them. In fact drug companies make 5 times the profit of any U.S. corporation and politicians get a huge amount of this. This is why the recent Health Care Law funnels so much money directly to them. Both Republicans and Democrats are to blame and the public is getting the booby prize. And the worst part is that children are the victims.

good luck to you

Any infant toy recommendations?

alexis7310

I have a 6 month old daughter and I just recently began sitting for a 5 1/2 month old girl also.
I have all the big stuff (swing, jumparoo', entertainer, etc...) and lots of rattles, balls, stuffed animals...but am looking for other toys that might keep their interest longer and help them learn as well.

Any recommendations/links would be helpful!

Answer
I have an in-home daycare...currently I have 4 infants that range from 4 months to 11 months, here are the favorites:

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=31376&pcat=bubrilliant
The 6 months olds can close them easily, around 10 months they learn to open them also.

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30446&pcat=bulnl
This is an expensive one but well worth the investment in my opinion...it keeps ages 6 months all the way to 4 years old occupied

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30446&pcat=bulnl
Another big one, but it's great for kids around 6-10 months learning how to put things into other things, plus the balls themselves are entertainment :)

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=33177&pcat=bugym
Great for crawlers, fun to chase :)

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2341&e=detail&pid=30444&pcat=bulnl
Pretty much any type of activity table is a must once they hit around 6-7 months, they are great for learning to stand and play

Well I could go on and on...I have a zillion toys and the kids love most of them...if you'd like more ideas let me know, I'd be happy to help!

What do 1 year olds play with?

...Karen..

my daughter is going to be 1 in about 2 weeks and we want to get her some blocks but what else do they play with. I am not going to spend 40.00 on some light up toy that doesnt teach her anything. She already has a whole book case of books from when I was a kid so now we are looking for developmental toys...ideas?

Answer
If you go to Target, they sell toys from the Parents series. Those are awesome! Very entertaining AND educational for infants and tots. :)

Infant photography props!?

I have an outdoor infant shoot tomorrow with a 3 month old baby girl. Im shooting at a gorgeous park with waterfalls and grassy fields. I have one cute white wicker basket i will be using as a prop but i need a couple more ideas for props. I love those cute little beds people use as props. I need quick/inexpensive ideas for props since the shoot is tomorrow.

Answer
I like the simple white cloths/blankets that are wrapped round babies in many of the proffesional photos. Also natural things work really well.. flowers/leaves
or just the babies favourite toys because it would make them feel natural. However you could try charity shops for baskets in the early morning at like 9-30 ish or any cushions that take your fancy. also they are good for things like fake flowers if you would want them :) sunflowers are nice, maybe go to your florist and grab a few?

Infant tantrums?

Lovin' Lif

I have a 7 month old baby girl who has been throwing some major hissy fits here lately. I don't know if there is such a thing because I don't remember my son ever doing this until later on. The typical thing for her is wanting to be held all day. I have been visiting my family alot since my husband deployed and I think she may be getting used to all of the attention from the grandparents. I give her tons of attention here at home, but am very cautious not to spoil her on these things. I know it can turn out badly because I did this to my son. Also, when it is time to get dressed, something she loved to do before..she cries. Not just a cry, a scream. Her face turns beet red and she is so obviously mad. When her brother takes a toy away, same thing. It just differs. So my question is, should I start redirecting her now with her anger. When she does this, pick her up and ? I don't know exactly what to do. I know this is all normal, but at such a young age, how do you handle such a thing?
There is also this song that we sing to her, all day everyday...she never gets tired of it and wants us to sing this to her every minute of the day. This is not such a bad thing and is actually kind of cute..lol

Answer
Anybody that says babies can't throw little tantrums has never had one!
At 7 months old, they are VERY aware of their environments, and believe me, crying can become a learned response even earlier than this.
My 9 month old daughter was a similar way around 7 months, she was crying for no reason other than attention. When a baby is going red in the face, yelling, with no tears, believe me there is nothing wrong with them! I just persevered with my daughter for a few weeks, she was still given plenty of attention, but if she started screaming the second I put her down, I just let her cry for a few minutes, then distracted her with a toy or song. It's one thing to give babies heaps of attention, and of course they should get unlimited love, but pandering to them, and reinforcing that yelling at you will get them picked up will lead to big problems by the time they're one.
I've worked with a lot of babies, as well as having my own, and some bubs just go through this stage. You'll get lots of well meaning people telling you that you can't 'spoil' a baby by holding them too much, but trust your own instincts. If you truly know that there's nothing wrong with her, then start redirecting her now. Some kids ae just more advanced, and it is very difficult to deal with a baby doing it, but don't worry, it's not abnormal at all, just more unusual, which is why a lot of people don't understand. Trust your own instincts and see how she goes. Good luck, I hope that helps!

Question about walkers?

My bab

I just read an answer someone posted about walkers delaying children walking. I have never heard this and would like to know more. I am a first time mommy and just curious!! Thanks!
It was Ryden's MaMa. If you could please tell me more that would be awesome!! Thanks a bunch!

Answer
I work with infants and toddlers, and every physical therapist i have ever worked with has said they should not be used at all. The way a child "walks" in them or even sits in them is not correct use of their muscles, it's not good at all for their legs. Of course most kids who use them will be just fine, but especially for a child who is already slow in their motor development, or at risk for delays, such as a premature baby, they shouldn't be used. Also, walkers have been linked to more child injuries than any other product for children. The American Academy of Pediatrics actually discourages the use of them all together.

A push toy is totally fine though.

my neighbor had a little girl today, besides a cigar, what would be a nice gift(were not really that close)?

jesse12508

Answer
*Baby clothes are nice. Try getting something in the 3-6 month range. They probably already have enough newborn, and 0-3 clothes already.

*Baby wipes, lotion, wash, washcloths, hooded-towel, infant tylenol drops, spoons- make up a gift basket.

*Maybe a baby toy for when the baby is older, like teethers, rattles, crib toys, etc. Board books are nice too.

*Photo frame- Baby's first year, newborn frame, first bath, etc.

*Get the mom a gift certificate for a massage, make-up, salon, etc. Everybody's focus went from the pregnant mom to the new baby, and now she's probably feeling a little left-out. Baby won't remember any gifts, but the mom won't forget.

my 9 month old keeps waking up in the middle of the night!?

Naomi

my son is going on 9 months and for a while between the ages of 6-7 months he was sleeping through the whole night, but now he wakes up every 30 Min's - every 2 hours it just varies, i don't know what to do i give him a bottle of water to sip on and he falls right back to sleep, but sometime he wont take the water and he wants formula, and i dont want to feed him to much during the night. i don't know what it could be if anyone knows please tell me, and if you have any advice, we usually feed him food, usually a thing of gerber, then give him a bath right before bed and then give him a bottle of formula and he will pass out. i don't know if its his teeth or what( he still does not have teeth) please any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Give him a warm bath every night, and put baby mango in his bottle.

I know it sounds crazy, but put baby mango and rice in his bottle when you put him to bed, and only the mango at night.
He will get used to the routine of bath and bed with a bottle with mango in it. It makes it a little sweet, mangoes also put out any gas, and it makes the bottle have more of a substance so he feels fuller for longer.

Also if you think he is teething give him some benydryl or baby motrin before bed (Half a teaspoon). It works wonders with teething. You might also want to put baby orajel on his teeth. The baby orajel is so strong it makes my finger go a lil numb when I put it on my babie's gums.

So try this in this order -

Medicine
Bath
Mango+rice+formula bottle
Bed

If he still isn't sleeping through the night you might want to try bathing him in baby lavender scented wash and shampoo. Lavender makes people tired and Johnson's*Johnsons sells lavender shampoo and baby wash. They also sell a gel that you use for infant massages that smells like lavender. You might want to try that as well then give him an infant massage every night to where its

Medicine
Bath with lavender shampoo and lavender wash
Lavender Massage Gel and infant massage (just rub it on his legs and feet and arms and little bit on his chest.
Mango+rice+formula bottle
Bed

Theres also infant soothers where a toy or a crib toy will play a lullaby.

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3104466

That product is what I have had for my baby girl since she was a few weeks old. I got it as a gift, and it plays a soothing lullaby with a soft yellow glow and it will play for about 3-6 minutes and will calm your baby to sleep. And it isnt even that loud either which is great.

How to disinfect infants toys?

Suri

I have an underground storage space where I live in Italy. It's quite damp and very dusty there. I've stored toys there from when my kids were little.I'd like to pass on these toys to my grandchildren. The toys have been there for probably 17 years. Is there a way of safely disinfecting the infant toys that will go into baby's mouth or should i throw them out? They were stored in a closed bag and then in a box. Most are hard plastic ,but a couple are stuffed.

Answer
You can definitely disinfect the toys. You just need to get a surface wipe (they have them at most supermarkets) get a surface wipe and wipe the toys clean. If they were in closed bags, they should be fine with a little bit of cleaning. Give them to your grandchildren after you clean them, they'll love them!

When did you infant start showing an interest in toys?

2 Little A

I bought so many toys that say birth plus. My son will be 7 weeks on Wednesday and he has shown ZERO interest in these birth plus toys, I put them up to him and shake the toys and push the lights on them and he just stares at the ceiling or at the lamps, never at the toys. When did your infant finally enjoy his toys?
I dont mind that he would rather look at ceilings and not his toys I just thought he needed all these toys since it says Birth on them and the packs they came in say that these toys have all these developmental benefits.

Answer
She had a Baby Einstein mat with a star suspended from the top which blinked multiple colors and played various classical songs and she loved that at one month. She would pay attention to it and even kick her legs in rhythm with some of the music. However, she did find the ceiling fan more interesting. The rest of her toys weren't interesting until she learned to work her hands on her own. And, to tell you the truth, most of the time, babies will find real world objects (like Mom's cellphone or keys) more interesting than the toys designed for them. My daughter's thing has been cat toys. We have little balls with bells in them for the cats, and a mouse the squeaks when you shake it. She would always find those more interesting than comparable infant/toddler toys for some reason. If I had known that in the beginning, I would have invested in cheap kitty toys. As it is, we go real simple with toys (mostly received as gifts). She is obsessed with books and balls and largely ignores toys except enjoying dumping them all over the floor, picking them up and putting them back...rinse and repeat.

where can i find a light for my infant car seat?

Q. i cannot seem to find what im looking for, but like some kind of light i can use in the carseat (attachaces) for late nights. anyone know of any?

Answer
There aren't any infant seats that come pre-equipped with lights. If you can find something - like the LED light that mystic suggested that doesn't get hot, the key is securing it to the car/carseat so that it doesn't become a projectile in the event you are involved in an accident. There's a test for carseat toys... If you hit yourself in the head with it... and you say ouch... well then you shouldn't use it. :-)

Evenflo does make a booster seat with built in LED lights in it, but it is just a booster and is not safe for a child less than 4 and 40 lbs. So, keep that in mind for later!

Toys for baby at 3 1/2 months old?

~*Renaissa

Hi, my baby is now 3 1/2 months old and really doesnt have any interest in toys. He loves looking at the faces of stuffed toys and loves hearing the sound of rattles. But the interest stops there.

If he is playing on his playmat i put stacks of toys around him to help keep him entertained. But he is always looking to find me first....or the TV lol (thats probably the only other thing he likes - probably because of the bright colours).

He hasnt really found his hands as yet...and im now im just a little worried. All of my family are saying he should be interested in them by now. Is there any reason for me to feel like this? Or should i just chill out and go with the flow?
This is the problem...Everywhere i go to look for rattles they dont have anything small enough to fit into his hands. The ones i did find and bought i give to him. He will hold them, but he loves sucking on them lol. He wont actually play with them. His favourite accessory sitting near him is his pacifier. If he loses it, he tries to find it and put it back into his mouth. But of course he has no success lol. I do have a mobile that i have hanging over his rocker. He will touch it, but wont play with it. He just has no interest for them.

Answer
All babies develop at different paces. Some faster, some slower. As long as your baby seem normal at this stage, there is nothing to worry about.

You are his favorite toy! He loves to see your face, your smile, the sound of your voice and your touch. Have fun with your baby, babies grow up so fast :)

What are babies like at 3 months?

Conkers

My moms having a baby.
I've calculated that on christmas day the baby will be 3 months old.
What can babies do at the age of 3 months? What toys do they like?
Thanks for any answers in advance

Answer
My daughter is three months old today! She's learning to sit and laugh, and can carry on long conversations in babbly baby talk. She's beginning to understand cause and effect; if she bats at a toy, it'll move and make noise. She also can recognize faces and people by now.

All of this to say that if you get her a toy that is bright, makes sounds, and has places to hold onto, she'll be happy. Better yet, if you have the money, you can get a play gym for her that has toys hanging above, and possibly a babyproof mirror. That's my daughter's favorite part of her gym- the mirror. Hers also has a piano at her feet so she can kick it and make music. She absolutely loves it. I got mine on Walmart's website for like $50, and it's worth every penny. Have fun shopping, and congrats on your new sibling!

I need likes/ dislikes for a 9 month old infant.?

Yaz Manits

I'm doing a project on a 9 month old and I need to know examples of food like/dislikes and what kind of toys they play with. I don't think they are still bottle fed at this time are they? (please forgive me, obviously I have yet to bare children lol) and what kind of activities do they enjoy doing?

Answer
Most babies actually do have bottles at 9 months, but it really depends on the parents. Most parents will keep the bottle until closer to their first birthday, while others don't use a bottle at all (breast feeding).

A 9 month old should still be breastfeeding, if that's how the parents started. They are most likely still eating rice cereal, and jarred baby foods. Definitely eating most fruits and vegetables, and possibly starting with some meats (depending on the parents and paediatrician). They probably eat some finger foods, like Cheerios and Mum-Mums.

As for toys, they would be playing with interactive toys (lots of buttons and lights and such), cloth books, or riding toys/push toys.

At 9 months, a baby is probably crawling, and may have started to use furniture to pull him/herself into a standing position. The baby is also probably teething, and (depending on the parents) will use a teething ring, infant Tylenol/Advil, Baby Orajel, or a combination of the three.

toys for infants?

leigh_ann_

I went to target today to find a toy for my 5 week old, but I dont know what kind of toy to get her. I know they say to get ones that are black and white and maybe red. I thought about getting her the floor gyms but they are $30-50, would it be good to get it for her now or should I wait until shes a little bit older? I just feel like shes bored.. i know i know dumb feeling....
another weird thing that just came to me-do you think babys are affraid of the dark? I know that they where in the dark for 9 months but now that they are out in the real world could it happen? I have noticed that when she is fussy at night and shes laying on my chest she wines a little bit but when i put on our light on low she falls asleep pretty fast.. so am I crazy or could she be affraid of the dark??

Answer
The floor gyms are actually better now then later. The reasoning for this is that once they start moving around they won't use it as much, I started using one when she was a month old and had her do her "tummy time" on it and what not. Other toys or things to buy that I would recommend is soft books because it is an easy way for you to interact with her but she can also play with it on her own. Anything else like the soft blocks, or soft rattles, etc. Babies at this age don't actually play with too much but if you want to have these things around for when she does its easier than running out and buying it all at once.

As for being scared of the dark, my daughter is just over a year now and still sleeps with a soft light on in the hall outside of her room. she never slept in the complete dark without crying!

quote for Kids Play home bulletin board ?

I have this bulletin board in my play school. I want to but a few quotes about play school, which inspires kids and parents, etc. Please help asap.

Answer
â¢When dealing with children, praise more, criticize less.

â¢Never say no to a gift from a child.

â¢Your children get only one childhood; think of this when you âdonât have timeâ to play, hug, kiss, and express your love for them. Make time for Iâm sorry, Iâm listening, I love you.

â¢You is smart, you is kind, you is important. [Kathryn Stockett in The Help]

â¢Children need models rather than critics. [Joseph Joubert (1754-1824)]

â¢You teach people how to treat you. It starts when your children are born. If you tolerate poor behavior, your kids will expect to get away with deplorable actions.

â¢There are two things you can and should give your child: roots and wings.

â¢Eliminate toy clutter. Children of all ages will play more creatively and independently with five toys than they will with 50.... Fewer toys allow a child to focus more effectively.... [John Rosemond in âLiving With Childrenâ 2011]

â¢Dealing with kids: It takes a thousand âattaboysâ to erase a single âyou're not good enough.â [Dr. Phil 2/12]

â¢A parentâs time is the coin of childhood. {Alema Pequoia}

â¢Children are our future: raise them with love and discipline; teach them respect and kindness.

â¢Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.

â¢Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word-for-word what you shouldn't have said.

â¢A child who learns to manage a little courtesy, even under pressure, is a child who is operating well in the world, a child with a positive prognosis.

â¢Thereâs nothing that can help you understand your beliefs more than trying to explain them to an inquisitive child. [Frank A. Clark]

â¢Treat the Earth well: it was not given to you by your parents; it was lent to you by your children. [Kenyan proverb]

â¢Manners (otherwise known as âsocial skillsâ) are at the heart of the whole parental enterprise. Every infant is born adorable but selfish and the center of the universe. Itâs a parentâs job to teach children that there are other people, and that others have feelings that can be hurt.

â¢We are all children sometimes, in our heart of hearts. [Jude Morgan in Charlotte and Emily]

â¢Little child, little problems; big child, big problems. [Anna Quindlen in Every Last One]

â¢We don't get most of our fears as adults; we bring them from childhood. [David Wiltse in Close to the Bone]

â¢Itâs easier to build strong children than to repair broken men. [Frederick Douglas]

â¢Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, you should cherish every moment and realize that the wonderment growing inside you is the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle. [Erma Bombeck (1927-1996)] (baby, childbirth, life)

â¢In the same way that you cannot choose your parents, neither can you choose your children. [idea from âThe Talented Mr. Ripleyâ]

â¢Fill a childâs bucket of self-esteem so full that the rest of the world canât poke enough holes in it to drain it dry.

â¢The only role models who have an actual impact are the ones at home at your dinner table.

â¢God should double your patience when you marry and triple it when you have children. {Alema Pequoia}

â¢Spare the rod and spoil the child is a warning, not a commandment.

â¢Even children have good ideas sometimes, probably because they have not yet learned prejudice and obfuscation, and do not screen their possibilities. {Alema Pequoia}

â¢If you truly love your children, give them more time than anything else. Your time is really all you have that is genuinely yours to give. {Alema Pequoia}

â¢Remember: What you do, what you say, how you listen, what you allow to happen in your family and household is the attitude and behavior you are modeling for your children that they will absorb and apply to their own lives in the future. {Alema Pequoia}

â¢Pay attentionâreal attentionâto a small child. The adults who did that when you were a kid are probably your role models.

â¢Parental Commandments: Be consistent. Actions have consequences. Say what you mean and mean it. Parents work together as a team. Don't make promises you can't keep. Listen to your children. Establish a routine. Respect is a two-way street. Positive reinforcement works much better than negative reinforcement. Manners are universal. Define your role as parents.

My 1 year old wakes up at 4 am and screams, and he won't stop until we get him. How can I make it stop.?

Wardinger

Answer
Did GSU *REALLY* just call your child a pet? Your child is not a pet. Don't follow that advice and treat it like one. How insulting!

Don't leave your child alone when they are screaming at night. The reason the child might stop is because they have lost trust in you. Why would you want that?

The first stage of Erikson's theory on development is "Trust vs. Mistrust." The infant and toddler stages are a time for the child to realize that, when they need you the most, you are going to be there for them. If you loose that developmental stage at this point, it will carry through for the rest of their lives.

Let me say that again - If you loose that developmental stage at this point, it will carry through for the rest of their lives.

What kind of toys does your child have in his crib? A stuffed animal and a toy similar to these:

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2011&e=detail&selcat=bgtoys&pid=34168

may help him if he wakes up. He may be able to keep himself occupied and not become as afraid.

If you wear perfume, try lightly scenting a blanket with it and leaving it in his crib. Smell is the strongest association senses. That may help him quite a bit.

Does he have any lighting or is the room pitch black? Try a night light as this may help him feel more comfortable.

Remember that, at this age, if a child cannot see you, they might think you are no longer there. They do not necessarily have a concept yet that if you're not in their vision or sight of any of the other senses, you still exist. He is crying out of fear sometimes that he is alone. Give him the reassurance every time that you are there when you hear him. It is a LOT!!! of work, but the payoff is there in knowing you are doing what is best for your child.

I hope the other suggestions help some.

Matt

what are the most important areas in a classroom setting for infants/toddlers?

Blanca

Dramatic area, art area etc.

Answer
Well, the good thing about infant/toddler daycare rooms is that there doesn't need to be a lot of fuss. Unless you want an unholy mess and 25 kids covered in finger paint, I wouldn't recommend an arts station. Usually, an area with toys is good, an area with tables to eat lunch is good, and a cubby area to hold toys from home, coats, etc. Some places like to break up play areas by the age groups; the daycare I worked at separated the 1 year olds from the 2-3 year olds for lunch and naptime. As long as you have a lot of toys and a playground outside, the kids will pretty much entertain themselves between mealtimes and naptime. :)

what do you think an infant -toddler program should be like?

jada@sbcgl

Answer
Not sure if you are talking about day care or a "Mommy and me" type of program. In either case, you need some short (5-10 minute) activities. Have enough toys that very young toddlers won't have to share. Sharing should be gently encouraged, but not forced. Allow some time for parallel play, where children are near each other but doing different activities. Use a lot of music: all kinds are OK, doesn't have to be just kid songs. Classical music is excellent. Rhythm band instruments are great for toddlers!

What is the most useful infant activity toy?

eradi-bat

Answer
Hands down the best toy for an infant is one of those activity mats. You know the ones - you put it on the floor, made of fabric, the bottom part is colorful and has different textures and things to play with and there are usually things that hang down so that if the baby is laying on her back, she can look up and reach for the dangling toys. It's a must have.

baby interactive toys?

What kind of interactive theme based activity centers are available for infants and toddlers? i.e. nursery rhymes, science, math, geography, music,etc... Do babies like this type of product and which would you recommend? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I prefer the baby gym made by Selecta. Selecta makes quality wooden toys. They are more expensive, but well worth it! Babies benefit from exploring their environment; themes are not really necessary.

Answer
2 months: Smiling, cooing, batting at toys, starting to laugh, lifting head off floor, following objects with eyes, able to sit with support, blowing spit bubbles.
3 months: Having conversations (IE: I talk and she cooes back), the mini push up (lifting her arms and belly off the ground while holding her head up), grabbing toys, trying to EAT her toys (haha), rolling belly to back, back to belly, able to stand while holding onto my fingers, plays with her feet and sticks them in her mouth.

Add: remember all babies develop at their own pace!

8 month old son and toys?

linda d

what toys are good for xmas and are worthwhile for a long time for a 8 month old boy who will be 10 months on xmas??? I am going to get him the fisher price activity walker but what else that is worth the $??
I have the gooble and go hippo and the drop and roll a rounds dinosaur
toys that assist motor skills would be great

Answer
With 3 sons I have learned more about boy toys than I ever wanted to know. Here are a few things to consider before spend a ton of money:
Are you into educational toys for him??
Are you want toys that he can entertain himself alone or are you willing to use them with him?
How far a head of his age are you wanting to expose him to toys?
How is he developmentally?? If he is behind you may want to consider toys to assist his motor skills.

Once you decide on those questions it will be easier to give you assistance one wht are good toys. My boys are 8-10 hours away from their grandparents on both sides, so birthdays and holidays they usually get extra. My playarea for them is a barn that is attached to our home and it is 1000sq ft filled with toys. I have an opinion on all of the toys they have or have been exposed to. I know I didn't really answer your question, but I just thought the advice on what types of direction you might be headed with toys would be more helpful than just a list of toys.

Edit:
For Gross Motor skills (the large muscles): I suggest
- Learn & Groove musical Table by: LeapFrog ~ this is a standing activity table that will entice your son to pull himself up to a standing postion.
- Baby Gymnastics Bounce & Spin Zebra by: Fisher-Price ~ I purchased this for my nephew who is 11 months old. He loves it. It is a great work out for his little legs.
- 5-in-1 Adjustable Gym by: Little Tikes ~ this grows with your child physical developments and stimulates eye/hand coordination.
Now for Fine Motor skills (small muscles like finger manipulation): I suggest
- V.Smile Baby: Infant Development System by: Vtech ~ yes this is just like a video game, but it requires your child's brain development to coinside with finger manipulation.
- Laugh & Learn: Learning Puppy by: Fisher-Price ~ this wonderful puppy helps your child to learn ABC's, 123's, parts of the body, colors, play games, plus sing along to 10 favorite songs. Dog bone collar lights up to the music!
- Baby's First Toys by: Sassy ~ this one is by far the best for fine motor skills. There are a lot of pieces for your child to link together and even chew on.

I'm a former Flight Attendant and I now fly a lot internationally with my three children.

First of all, I hope you have whatever passport he or she needs. This can be a real headache with children. If you haven't tackled that, do so now and please be careful with the photo. Taking the correct child's picture can be tricky so get the full instructions from whichever country this concerns. If your child is a U.S. citizen, he or she will need that passport to re-enter the U.S., even they have another passport.

This can be a difficult age to travel. Toddlers love to run and hate to be confined. I do recommend that s/he have his/her own seat and that you bring his/her carseat along. Try to get an extra seat next to you if the flight isn't full and you haven't purchased a seat for your child. Ask very nicely for this at check in.

This is the only way to fly safely with any baby. Lap children are allowed because statistically, flying is so safe, there's very little chance of anything going wrong. If it does though, a lap child has no protection.

First check that your seat is approved by your airline. This is the link if you are flying a U.S. company;

For a non-U.S. company, check with your airline's website.

I will say that my toddlers were much more settled and much easier when they were in their familar seat. Not to scare you but some parents haven't been able to keep a hold of their little ones and have been "off loaded" as a result.

I will admit that I've strapped down an unhappy little one more than once. Toddlers hate to be confined and simply don't understand that they have to be seated sometimes. Firmly anchored in, I could then consol them while we landed.

To get through the airport, they sell all sorts of gizmos like these;

I simply use a small metal luggage cart with an extra bungee cord and it works great. I skip on the stroller and she can even ride in it. She usually prefers to walk and then I load the carry-ons aboard. Some parents are also able to wedge the seat in the stroller or bungee cord it to the back of the seat portion of their stroller.

Besides, taking your car seat onboard virtually guarentees that it'll be there at your destination. Checking them risks damage and loss. Wont you need it when you get there?

For entertainment, get him a new toy, anything and it doesn't have to be expensive. Keep it and give it to him or her once you're on the plane. My son at that age liked anything with wheels. Once, I simply had a package of plastic animals. Kept him busy for ages!

Play dough, stickers, anything to color with and simple toys like pinwheels are also recommended. Just make sure that they don't make ANY noise. Even a quiet toy can drive your fellow passengers batty. No one will mind if you read to your child though. Chunky books with flaps are fun for toddlers. These make good suprises on the aircraft.

I actually don't recommend a portable DVD player *unless* s/he can watch it without sound. I doubt s/he'll wear the headphones but try it at home. For such a long flight, I recommend a player with at least 5 hours playing time. Keep the light low to save battery time and bring a recharger with any adapters to recharge it on layovers.

Just some other small tips;
-Bring a change of clothes
-Bring way more diapers than you think you'll need
-Wrap extra diapers and clothes in plastic and tie with rubber bands to save space in your carry-on.
-Learn to change him or her standing up (don't try to fit him on those tiny babychangers and toddlers hate to lie down in strange places)
-Bring an empty sippy cup to fill during the services. This will prevent spills in the air.
-Get up and move around with him but keep an eye out. Those carts the F/A's use are the perfect height for hiding little ones
-Bring snacks. Don't fret security. I've never had anything taken away (yes, water but not snacks) and that's the only risk. If you have something not allowed, they simply remove the item. No scenes, no speeches, no arrests!
-Try to sit in a bulkhead seat so that there's no one in front of you
-Bring slippers, especially if you're not in the bulkhead!

The stroller can be "gate-checked", meaning that you will get a tag at the counter when you first check-in and then you can bring it to the door of the aircraft. Please ask if your stroller will be returned to you at the gate on any connections. When exiting the plane, if they are using more than one door, ask at which door are the strollers (usually with the wheelchairs). Bring a bungee cord and at the door of the aircraft, fold the stroller and double secure it with a bungee cord to prevent it from popping open en route. You can also cover it in a bag if you want.

It's actually a myth that children need to suck on something for take-off and landing. I rarely saw it in my 13 years as a Flight Attendant and with all the flights I've made with my children, I have never, ever done anything special with them for take-offs and landings.

ENT specialists simply recommend that the child is awake for landing;
http://www.entcda.com/AAOHNSF/earsandaltitude.htm

The delicate time is not during take-off or landing/touchdown but at the *top of descent*. This is usually 40 minutes to an hour before landing and everyone's ears have to reverse the pressurization. I can confirm that when I worked, if any passengers had ear problems, this was the time. Not just children either! They actualy felt *better* as we got closer to landing.

If you dive (which I thought of because I've gone diving in Borcay), you learned the same principal but in the opposite direction. Going down into the water is the same as going up in the air and vise versa. Just as a reminder, if you are a diver, don't do it within 24 hours of flying!

The BEST way to avoid ear issues is to take your little one to the doctor a few days before flying. My son was good at getting symptomless ear infections. The doctor will look in his or her ears and make sure they're clear and infection-free. Healthy ears can handle pressurization changes.

My son was 20 months old and slept just 20 minutes of an 11 1/2 hour flight. It was just so fun for him! Not so fun for mom but I survived... Even the calmest, most placid children are not good on planes at this age. Take heart. You're not alone.

It can be tempting to use some sort of medication to get a toddler to sleep on a long flight. I never have done this due to a family history of allergies but be aware that this is not rare. Sometimes children get the opposite reaction and I've seen this a couple of times when working. If you decide this would be a good idea, talk to your doctor and try it at home first.

For more information, I wrote an article on this subject. It's based on both my personal and professional experience of flying with kids. It's totally non-commercial and other parents have contributed;

Both of you get plenty of sleep the night before and good luck!

Which one do u think is best and describe the features of it. Like for example why does it target the audience, the benefits and all..

Answer
Show for infants and children - Sesame Street. It is a learning environment that the kids don't even realize they are learning. It keeps their interest.
Song for toddlers to kindergarten - Wheels on the Bus. Keeps them interested, interactive, my 14 month old granddaughter is learning words that describe motion, ie, up and down, round and round, etc.
Toy for infants to 3 - tupperware. Harmless, non breakable, creative
I'm a fan of old reliable toys, crayons, bubbles, etc the things that rely on the child to use their imagination. Electronic toys for the younger set entertains but does not teach them how to entertain themselves.
Hope this helps.
