Why are people so mean to Michael Jackson?

I was just wondering. I get not everyone is gonna like you but some people just say the rudest things! I don't think he did anything. He's a very innocent man in my eyes.

Answer
For these reasons - hateful, ignorant, stupid or jealous.

I agree, you're not going to like everybody but the level of disrespect is ridiculous.

Ignorant people actually choose to be ignorant. The information is there but they chose not to learn it so they're acting out of their own lack of knowledge. The same knowledge that they rejected. IMO to reject knowledge is stupid. There is hope for this group, as soon as they decide to enlighten themselves, they'll no longer be ignorant.

Now stupid people have other mental issues that cannot be helped. They can look at information all day long but they cannot process it. They are without common sense. I believe that common sense is something that you are born with. For the people that don't have it, well "God takes care of babies and fools." These people are speaking out of their own stupidity and insecurity as well. If I was stupid, I would be a little insecure.

People that are hateful and mean to other human beings usually have very little or no self-esteem and are unhappy with themselves. Trashing someone else is a confidence boost for them but the real problem never gets fixed which is their own miserable existence. The old saying "misery loves company" is very true.

Then you have your jealous folks, which needs no explanation.

Michael was truly amazing! He was greatness. He wouldn't get such a rise out of people if he wasn't.

Edit:
These are examples of information being available and not utilized:
Some people think MJ was only around boys. Media reports fail to mention the sisters, mothers and whole families at Neverland Ranch and with him on vacation, some which can clearly be seen in photos and video footage. Jordan's mom, June Chandler who was also a blk/asian ex-model traveled with Michael right along with Jordan and his little sister Lily. June Chandler also testified she never witnessed any abuse and didn’t recall any stories of MJ with other boys. This information is available and ignored. There's even a video on YouTube of Michael at Neverland with children and parents. http://rhythmofthetide.com/michael-jacksons-female-kid-friends/. A family trip http://www.allforloveblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/lily2.jpg

Some people think Michael was sleeping in bed with strange children. This is not true. Michael was speaking of sharing a bedroom and not a bed. He didn't have a regular size bedroom like most of us have. His bedroom was 2 stories, like a small apartment without the kitchen. Even in the same conversation that some like to reference they leave out the part where he said at least twice that he did not sleep in the actual bed. They also leave out the part where the boy said that “there was one night” he asked Michael if he could sleep in his room and the boy himself said Michael piled up blankets and slept on the floor. The whole conversation about this subject is usually ignored and it's on tape.

Some believe he had a life size doll in his room when he died. This is also BS. Another lie. There is even a picture of his room that is also available. The picture shows a little girls baby doll left in his room possibly by his little daughter, Paris. For God's sake the man had 3 kids. Like children don't leave toys in their parent's room. That is the first thing I thought when I saw it because I knew he had children that age. When it comes to Michael, some act like it's the first time they ever heard of anything.

Some people also think he was a junkie when his autopsy report states he had no drugs in his system other than the medication Murray used that night. The toxicology report even lists every drug you can think of and next to each drug it is documented that they were NOT present in his system. These documents are available to the public on the internet and they are ignored. And let's not forget during the trial every inch of the autopsy was covered for about 2 days and people are still clueless.

Some people ignore photos, video footage, taped recordings, legal documents, court transcripts and believe what they want to believe and see what they want to see which leads me to think they are one of the 4 groups above.

What type of cat breed should I own?

Danielle

My cat, Joy, passed away about a month or so ago from a heart attack or a stroke, and we have buried her. We do NOT plan to get a cat anytime soon, maybe around December for my brother (He took it the hardest.). We already have two other cats, which are both ragdoll males.

We can't get a dog because fleas are really common in the area where we live and they're even on our cats now (Indoor cats, seriously!), so owning an outside animal would just cause more mess to it all.

But any suggestions to cats? My brother said he would love another cat in a few months. We were actually planning on another animal before she passed away, so definitely not trying to replace her! She's always going to hold a special place in our hearts, and we're a bit concerned with getting another ragdoll. I figure it would just remind us of her too much, so any other breeds that mix well with Ragdolls?

Hopefully I can update you guys if you're curious if we get another cat in the end. We're just CONSIDERING it, and we have been for two months now, I promise we won't get another cat until everybody is perfectly ready so just please do not judge our family on that. We still check on Joy's grave every day, she's not replaceable, trust me aha

Answer
Danielle - it is always difficult to lose a much loved pet. I am 60 years old and have had pets (mostly cats) for as long as I can remember. Over a period of 4 years I lost 4 cats and one dog. All very old. When my 3rd cat died 08/2011 I knew that my 22 year old baby would not live much longer. I started looking for a kitten. On Oct. 1st I visited my sister. A feral cat had a litter of 6 kittens in her flower bed. They were 7 to 10 days old. Their eyes were just open. I told Sis that I would take the 2 females when they were old enough. 4 days later Sis called me. The mom had abandoned a male and a female. I showed up the next morning to pick them up. The little male had not survived the night. I brought the baby girl home and named her Sallie Sue. She only weighed 3 1/2 ounces. She should have weighed 7 to 8 ounces. I bottle fed her every 4 hours 24/7 for 5 weeks. My old lady, Patches died in February 2012. Again I started looking for kitten. In April I adopted an adorable calico from a friend who had farm cats. He said she was 6 weeks old. As soon as I saw her I knew that she was no more than 4 weeks old, So bottle feeding for 2 weeks. Her name is Daisy Faye.

My adorable girls can never replace my other cats. All of my animals were raised from babies. Having said that I can't live without cats in my life. My 2 girls have very different personalities and keep us laughing.

Back to your question. In all of my years I have had only one breed animal. In the early 80's I gave my husband a black lab for his birthday. All of my other animals - all cats except for 1 dog were, strays, abandoned, shelter animals or kittens from farm cats. I have always wanted an Abyssinian but could never justify buying a breed cat when there are so many unwanted cats out there. They are just as beautiful and loving and have as much personality as any breed. They are also very hard to find homes for.

I am not being critical of folks who prefer breed cats. I still dream of having an aby. It will probably never happen because some one will show up with a non breed kitten needing a loving home and my soft heart will melt and I will add another stray to my menagerie.

Since your brother was the most impacted by the loss of Joy let him pick out a new kitten. Shop both ways. Show him breeds on line then take him to the animal shelter or Pet Smart/Pet Co on Saturdays when they have the rescue groups showing their adoptable animals. Let him fall in love with a kitten.

I avoid Pet Smart and Pet Co unless we are going out of town and I have to get dry food for our girls. I can not resist the rescue kittens and have to fight with myself not to turn into a crazy cat lady. Our friends are always surprised at what a sucker my husband is for our girls. He is a big man's man who hunts and fishes. They see him as a dog kind of guy. Our friends can not get over what a softy he is for our girls.

Sorry - I do tend to ramble. Follow you heart. Let your brother pick a kitten - breed or non breed does not matter. The older cats will torment the baby for a few days. Don't worry they will get over it. When Sallie Sue was old enough and healthy enough to roam she tormented my old lady Patches. Poor old girl just ignored her. When Daisy Faye joined our family Sallie Sue was not happy. She hissed and swatted at the baby for about 2 days then she realized that she had a new toy. In July I baby sat a 7 week old kitten. Both of my girls were initially offended. Sallie settled down after a day. Daisy tormented the baby for 3 days. After that they were inseparable. They played chase and hide and seek. After a week the baby went home. Daisy moped around looking for her for another week.

Oh well. No matter which way you go you will make the right decision.

Good luck

I am due in April. I am not sure of everything I need to have for my baby. I know all the basics like crib, dresser, ect.. I just want to have everything done and ready for his arrival by March. I am so confused I dont even know where to start!! Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated!! This is my first and I am just wanting to be completly prepared!

Answer
You can look on any baby care website, or in one of those "What to Expect..." books. Or, just take all the answers you get and compile them. Someone may list something no one else thought of. Some basics I can remember are:
onesies in all sizes
socks
sleepers
bath supplies - lotion, baby oil, baby bath, baby powder, nail clippers, towels, washcloths, brush
bathtub
vaseline, Desitin, infant Tylenol
thermometer
baby monitor
bibs
bottles and bottle brush
pacifiers
burp cloths
blankets (receiving and thicker ones)
outdoor wear (jacket or sweater and hat - snowsuit if necessary)
lap changing pads
waterproof pads for bassinet and/or crib mattress
sheets for bassinet and/or crib
nose aspirator (the sucker thing!)
cotton balls/q-tips
musical mobile for crib, if desired (my daughter still likes hers at age 2!)
some small baby toys, and a stuffed animal or doll
diapers, can be all sizes, not just newborn
baby wipes
diaper pail if desired

These are just some I can think of. Hope it helps a bit.

What toys start with the letter I?

Erica

My son needs to bring a show and tell item that starts with the letter I and we can't think of anything!
Sorry - you can't tell with the font on here - I mean I like Igloo. Not L. Thanks!

Answer
It doesn't have to be a toy does it? Just something that starts with 'i'.

Maybe if someone you know has a baby and who is available your son can have an 'infant'. Maybe he could bring in some 'ink' and show a picture he made with the ink. You could even go to the butchers and see if they have any animals guts and he can bring in some 'innards'. You could catch an 'insect', show a musical 'instrument' or if you have something made out of ivory he could use that.... But if it HAS to be a toy, I'm completely stumped. Maybe you could find or make a stuffed iguana.

How can I masturbate with my parents in the other room?

Hi I am 16 and my mom has ALMOST caught me numerous times masturbating, and I don't use and toys or anything just my, like, hands. But is there a way to OrgÂ$m without them, like, HEARING?
Really sorry its SOO embarrassing thank u SO much for whoever answers.
P.S. I am a girl btw.

Answer
Any parent who doesn't *know* that 16 year olds masturbate is an idiot... and all you need is to remain in the privacy of your own room when you do it.

As for making noises when you orgasm, well, so did my daughter beginning when she was 11... we just ignored it (well, we *did* chuckle to ourselves about it sometimes if it happened while we were doing anything sexual ourselves).

Why upset and embarrass a kid over something as innocent and natural as an orgasm?

EDIT: "Nathan"...

Please get real.

There's no such thing as "being too young" for that.

I don't suppose you've ever been permitted to learn the truth about all the people that masturbate... but it might interest you to know that infants masturbate (often to orgasm if they do it at all and - rarely - fetuses even during the last week or two before they're born masturbate)... that by the age of 12, almost 1/3 of all girls have been masturbating to orgasm at least occasionally for half their lives or more... that at age 15 it's 2/3 of them who are doing it regularly (many of those have been doing it several times a day... for years).

How common is it for a 3 yr old to have perfect handwriting with his left hand but mirror write with the right?

Michelle

My 3yr old son is a dominate left hander and can write his name and many other words with great handwriting for his age. (hes better than my 5yr old daughter is already) But i noticed him doing something kind of strange in the past few months since we have started working on writing. When he uses his right hand to write, he does it in perfect Mirror image. Now it know it is common for children to mirror write, expecialy with him being left handed. But unlike pretty much all natural left handed mirror writers, he mirror writes with his right hand (his less dominate one.) Its really hard to get any info on this because most all right handed mirror writers have taught themselves, but his is all natural. And if i try to get him to mirror with his left hand he cant do it. If i try to get him to write the proper way with his right hand, he will start from the correct side of the page but all of the letters are still in mirror. Im looking for some input on if i should nurture this rare ability since it dosent affect his dominate hand. And on any info on how rare it may be. I know he is extremely smart just to the fact of his ability to write so well at such a young age. He is also very artistic, he loves to paint color and draw, infact he dosent touch any other toys any more...just his magnadoodle and art supplies....Please any info is so greatly appreciated!!!

Answer
He sounds a clever child! As his left hand is dominant and he writes correctly with, you should encourage it. I can't understand why you are trying to get him to mirror-write with his left hand? I used to get in trouble when I was in infant school [and was smacked with a ruler] for mirror writing. Looking back though, I am lucky that no-one tried to change me, as happened to many other left-handers.

What infant toy(s) do you think actually benefits your child developmentally?

My guys are 4 months, and so far I think the activity gym (the mat with toys hanging overhead) is the only thing that really develops them in a way that not having it would not.

The swing, jumper, infant chairs etc. are soothing / fun, but not developmental, but the activity mat allows them to do something they couldn't yet otherwise, which is to grab and bat at toys.

Answer
I feel the same way. I have a jumper and a swing and they simply keep my son distracted (for a short period of time) when I need to be doing something. The activity mat actually engages his mind and helps him to play. It is by far his favorite place to be when I'm not holding him. I have recently tried him in a Jumperoo and he loved that thing so much he got kinda mad at me when I took him out of it because I could tell he was getting exhausted. It has lights and makes noises when he jumps and he loves light and noises. (And belly dancers for some reason, but I won't get in to that here.) (:

where can i find a light for my infant car seat?

guesscooki

i cannot seem to find what im looking for, but like some kind of light i can use in the carseat (attachaces) for late nights. anyone know of any?

Answer
There aren't any infant seats that come pre-equipped with lights. If you can find something - like the LED light that mystic suggested that doesn't get hot, the key is securing it to the car/carseat so that it doesn't become a projectile in the event you are involved in an accident. There's a test for carseat toys... If you hit yourself in the head with it... and you say ouch... well then you shouldn't use it. :-)

Evenflo does make a booster seat with built in LED lights in it, but it is just a booster and is not safe for a child less than 4 and 40 lbs. So, keep that in mind for later!

My daughter is 13 months old and she currently is wearing socks for 6-12mo so I went to walmart a couple days ago to get her new socks and walked around the whole baby department looking for them. She's my first one lol.

Is it too soon to allow baby and toddler to sleep in same room?

Gracie's m

I have a 4 month old and an 18 month old. The 18 month old sleeps great, 12 hours a night. The 4 month old goes right down at night but does wake a few times for a feeding. I tried it last night and the 18 month old slept through the night wakings. Does anyone have any experience with this? I have been trying to wean the baby from most of her night feeds but it just doesnt work. I think it is too early and would like to wait until she is closer to 6 months. Thanks!

Answer
My son woke up once a night for a nursing until he was 13 months old. Since he nursed like he was hungry, I didn't do anything to cut it out. He just stopped doing it on his own.

Whether your toddler fully wakes or not, their sleep is still disrupted, and it can cause deprivation issues.

Also, is your toddler still in a crib? Do you feel comfortable that she won't try to help your infant by giving her toys in her crib? Or that she won't pull on her or such?

Personally, I wouldn't put them together at that age, though I realize that it is done all of the time. But, I have the option, so I will avoid it.

What is the name of this toy that hangs from the car seat handle?

My mother-in-law saw this toy hanging from the car seat handle... it hangs and the baby pulls from the end as the toy "grows" and when the baby releases it, the toy goes back up to its original position.

If you know the name of it, or where I could buy it, that would be great.

I have never seen it, so this is the best description I can give you... I guess it's a really cool toy, since the baby was laughing a lot.

Thanks for your help if you know what it is.

How much does a child's car seat cost?

Splendidly

I need to buy a car seat for a toy drive i'm participating in for a child who really needs one- how much do they usually cost and where can I find an affordable, nice one?

The child is 3 years old!

Answer
If this is for a toy drive, and for a child without, I would forget about infant seats. Even if it is a baby, you can spend the same amount on a seat that will work from birth-40lbs as you would spend on a seat for the first year. Some suggestions for age 0-4:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10151273 This one goes to 50lbs! $100

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10226644 This one goes to 65lbs! $180

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2982660 $80

Good luck! Also see if Babies R Us has an coupons out. Explain to the manager what you are doing and see if they can help!

This might look a tad bit long but please help me out with at least a few!!!

So I'll be finding out the gender of my baby in about a week or so & soon I need to start shopping/collecting items for my baby. I am starting to get nervous about a few things and as a first time mom I would really appreciate some help from other parents who have kids.

PLEASE help me out if you can.

Clothing --> do I need to get a lot of 0-3 months? or should I get a few and just focus on stocking up on 3-6 mnths? I know people keep telling me that the baby will grow fast.
-->What are some 'much needed' clothing items (clothes that make life a bit easier for example: clothes that you don't have to struggle putting over their head / baby gowns// etc..)

Shoes--> Do I need them? I heard baby's hate having shoes on or that they aren't needed til they walk

Items in general such as cribs, stroller, etc---> What is NEEDED exactly? Like I know that I can live without a Diaper Genie.. but a Crib is a must! So what all do I actually need & what are the things I should avoid wasting money on?

Toys--> Should I start buying toys for the baby already? How soon do they take interest and chew on the toys?

***I have a washer/dryer so I can always wash clothes (that means I probably don't need too many)
***Husband and I are financially stable so we're not worried about the cost of things if our baby needs it.

If you have any extra advice/info -moms/dads- I'd appreciate it!!! THANKS!
GOODNESS! THANK YOU SO MUCH YA'LL FOR HELPING ME OUT AND RESPONDING..I KNOW THIS WAS A TAD BIT LONG BUT YOU KNOW I APPRECIATE ALL THE INFO AND HELP I CAN GET FROM YOU!!

Answer
Clothes:Don't even bother with 'newborn',go straight tp 0-3 months. Get plenty of vests and stick to gowns and babygrows, they are easier to handle when it comes to changing times. Babygroes are the best option, gowns tend to let too much air in and newborns need to be kept as warm as possible. Get beanies and socks, you'll be using the socks for his/her hands for a while as newborns tend to scratch themselves. Get 6-12 pairs of 3-6 months clothes. It's just enough to cover you for a few days when baby starts growing out of his 0-3 months, mine is 2 months old and already wearing his 3-6 months clothes.
Skip shoes entirely. It's perfectly useless for a child that young. You can get one or two pairs when baby is around 6 months and then you'll only be using them for when you go someplace nice and you want him to look cute.
Must haves: You will need a stoler, carseat and carrycot. Get one of those strap on carriers that the mother wears and the baby rests on her chest, we have 3 and they are SO comfortable(you can use them at around 2 months) A camping cot is very convenient, though not utterly necissary. It's great to have around when visiting friends or keeping next to your bed when the tot is sick. Baby monitors, don't be cheap because the cheap ones tend to give off so much static that you can hardly hear the baby over it.
Get a comfortable changing station, even if you convert an old dresser into one. It needs to be high enough as to not hurt your back from bending over, It's a bonus if it has drawers to keep the tot's clothes close by, it needs a changing pillow(not sure what the correct term is) and get a bin that seals propperly to keep the daiper's smell locked in.
Get a baby bath and stick to nonscented products for the fist 3 months. travel changing mats are great and very cheap. Baby bags, get at least 2, one for the car and a spare.
If you aren't breastfeeding, get a bottle warmer. I know it's not a MUST have, but it saves you plenty of time running up and down to the kitchen with a screaming infant. If you are breastfeeding, get a breastfeeding pillow, or you might have backaches from bending over all the time when breast feeding. And get a baby medi kit, it has your themometer, the suction to suck up the boogies, Measuring spoons for medicine etc.
Toys: Don't go too big. Just get a rattle or two and something that makes noise and lights. They only start being interested in shiny, noisy things from around 2 months and can't hold anything until 4 months. Besides, plenty of friends will bring stuffed toys so you won't even have to bother buying any in the begining.
Congratulations!

Answer
· nail clippers - the scissor kind is worthless, get small clippers that look like adult ones

Changing Supplies

small changing pads

diapers I get huggies from diapers.com you can buy them in bulk and free over night shipping.

wipes -

changing table or countoured changing pad and a cover that can sit on top of a dresser

Bath Supplies

bath towel - buy two with hoods

· bath toys - plus a plastic cup for rinsing and pouring

· washcloths

· baby soap and shampoo or body wash

· baby lotion

· desitin or corona (Which is for animals and sold at feed supply stores. It has lanolin, which heals diaper rash faster than anything I've ever found. A nurse recommended it to me.)

· soft brush

· infant bath tub or sling - I preferred the sling because the tubs are so hard to store

Feeding Supplies
bottles - 1 or 2 are nice even if you plan on breastfeeding

binkie

· burp clothes - need 4 to 6 or more if your baby has reflux

breast pads- If you dont breastfeed your might leak.

formula- even you do breastfeed if always good to have some on hand just in case.

breast pump - I found hand pumps worked better than electric.

you can wait until your baby is four months old before buying these items ( or stock up now they grow fast)

· plastic bibs - get a small one that fits the baby's neck

baby spoons - plastic coated ones are the best

baby food and cereal also plain mashed potato flakes are easy to fix and cheap.

sippy cup - I like the ones with handles for first time drinkers

Bring home from the hospital

alcohol pads

soft brush for scrubbing babies head while bathing - this prevents cradle-cap

nose aspirator

Sleeping Essentials

crib

receiving blankets - buy 4 to 6 because babies need to be wrapped up when they are first born

sheets - at least two for when your baby poops or throws up on one

Car Basics

infant car seat

sun screen for the car window

Clothing

clothes - don't buy too many you will receive a lot of 0-3 month clothes at your baby shower. If you get too many which you probably will take them back and buy a bigger size. Figure out how old your child will be the next time the season comes around and buy that size.

pajamas - buy lots of these, 4 to 6 pairs, because they are easy to change and keep your newborn warm

onesies

socks - keep those baby feet warm

Toys and Board Books

teething rings

toys with bright colors and music

balls

blocks

rubber toys for chewing

soft toys for cuddling

board books - not paper

Great extras

bounce chair - my son slept in his the first three months because he was elevated and it helped his acid reflux

swing - some children love these and some don't

baby carrier - I used to take mine to the grocery store and carry my baby in it so I had my hands free.

stroller - I used to take my son on walks for exercise.

bassinet - this is nice because you can keep the baby closer for the first month

rocking chair - babies love the rocking motion

What can cause abnormally fast strength and skill development in infants?

best infant toys for travel

best infant toys for travel image

K

My 10 week old infant has been gaining certain abilities at a very fast rate. He started trying to lift his head the day after he was born. At 3 weeks old he had full control of his head and learned how to roll over from his tummy to his back. At 7.5 weeks he started trying to roll from his back to his stomach. At 8 weeks he started trying to crawl. He can't get his knees under him but he manages to travel across the designated play spot at a very slow pace. He hates tummy time and fights to get out of the position which results in the rolling over and crawling. I try to encourage play with toys because tummy time is good for him but he just screams so he has gotten limited practice. At 10 weeks he can almost sit, has full control of his back, can roll from tummy to back, can almost roll from back to tummy, and is in the process of gaining skills to crawl. He also has a very strong grip and very strong legs. When we are holding him he tries to stand on our laps. If he is laying down and holding our hands, if we try to pull our hands away, instead of him letting go he holds on and his whole body comes up with us.
What causes this abnormal amount of strength and skill development?
How can I get him to have more tummy time without screaming his head off?
Is this considered a birth defect?
This is not me thinking my child is special or trying to brag. Some of the stuff he's doing typically doesn't occur till 5 months or later. I'm asking what can cause this and if it's reason for concern.
Then why did the doctor say he's very strong for his age? He also said it was abnormal for him to have full control of his head. I've also had other parents saying it's weird and how their kids couldn't do this. He can crawl it's just very slow and not up on hands and knees. I read that kids don't roll from tummy to back till 5 months and back to stomach even later and he did it at 3 weeks and gets 3/4 over from back to tummy. So I wanted to know if he can hurt himself or if there is something wrong.

Answer
Your baby is on a normal development track. Being "almost" able to do something is not the same as doing it. He does not have full control of his back if he can not sit unsupported. Babies try to make the motions of crawling often for months before actually being able to do so. Rolling over can easily occur early depending on the muscles he is using to accomplish the task. I am not trying to minimize your son's performance, but from a developmental standpoint he is not so advanced that you have need to worry about something being wrong. Just let him develop at his own pace.

Any suggestions on traveling with infant on a plane?

paula r

I will be traveling ALONE with my 10 months old son for a 15 hours non-stop flight very soon. Any suggestions on how i can make it easier on myself and on him? I heard about the sucking bottle when take off and land to avoid his ear popping. The travel agent booked us the very last row. but then I heard that the best is the bulk head. I am not sure having a big screen in front of me and my baby though. He crawls everywhere. Not yet walking by himself. What do i do to entertain him? Can I bring a electronic toys on board? Is there any traveling gear that I should bring with me? I will have a travel system stroller and the car seat with me. I am afriaid it will be really tough when we get to the screening. Just a bit nervous since I will be going alone. That's a long flight too. Please help.

By Lindsey Tanner, Associated Press
CHICAGO — In a case fraught with ethical questions, the parents of a severely mentally and physically disabled child have stunted her growth to keep their little "pillow angel" a manageable and more portable size.
ON DEADLINE: Debate the case, read family's blog

The bedridden 9-year-old girl had her uterus and breast tissue removed at a Seattle hospital and received large doses of hormones to halt her growth. She is now 4-foot-5; her parents say she would otherwise probably reach a normal 5-foot-6.

The case has captured attention nationwide and abroad via the Internet, with some decrying the parents' actions as perverse and akin to eugenics. Some ethicists question the parents' claim that the drastic treatment will benefit their daughter and allow them to continue caring for her at home.

University of Pennsylvania ethicist Art Caplan said the case is troubling and reflects "slippery slope" thinking among parents who believe "the way to deal with my kid with permanent behavioral problems is to put them into permanent childhood."

Right or wrong, the couple's decision highlights a dilemma thousands of parents face in struggling to care for severely disabled children as they grow up.

"This particular treatment, even if it's OK in this situation, and I think it probably is, is not a widespread solution and ignores the large social issues about caring for people with disabilities," Joel Frader, a doctor and medical ethicist at Chicago's Children's Memorial Hospital, said Thursday. "As a society, we do a pretty rotten job of helping caregivers provide what's necessary for these patients."

The case involves a girl identified only as Ashley on a blog her parents created after her doctors wrote about her treatment in October's Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine. The journal did not disclose the parents' names or where they live; the couple do not identify themselves on their blog, either.

Shortly after birth, Ashley had feeding problems and showed severe developmental delays. Her doctors diagnosed static encephalopathy, which means severe brain damage. They do not know what caused it.

Her condition has left her in an infant state, unable to sit up, roll over, hold a toy or walk or talk. Her parents say she will never get better. She is alert, startles easily, and smiles, but does not maintain eye contact, according to her parents, who call the brown-haired little girl their "pillow angel."

She goes to school for disabled children, but her parents care for her at home and say they have been unable to find suitable outside help.

An editorial in the medical journal called "the Ashley treatment" ill-advised and questioned whether it will even work. But her parents say it has succeeded so far.

She had surgery in July 2004 and recently completed the hormone treatment. She weighs about 65 pounds, and is about 13 inches shorter and 50 pounds lighter than she would be as an adult, according to her parents' blog.

"Ashley's smaller and lighter size makes it more possible to include her in the typical family life and activities that provide her with needed comfort, closeness, security and love: meal time, car trips, touch, snuggles, etc.," her parents wrote.

Also, Ashley's parents say keeping her small will reduce the risk of bedsores and other conditions that can afflict bedridden patients. In addition, they say preventing her from going through puberty means she won't experience the discomfort of periods or grow breasts that might develop breast cancer, which runs in the family.

"Even though caring for Ashley involves hard and continual work, she is a blessing and not a burden," her parents say. Still, they write, "Unless you are living the experience ... you have no clue what it is like to be the bedridden child or their caregivers."

Caplan questioned how preventing normal growth could benefit the patient. Treatment that is not for a patient's direct benefit "only seems wrong to me," the ethicist said.

Douglas Diekema, a doctor and ethicist at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, where Ashley was treated, said he met with the parents and became convinced they were motivated by love and the girl's best interests.

Diekema said he was mainly concerned with making sure the little girl would actually benefit and not suffer any harm from the treatment. She did not, and is doing well, he said.

"The more her parents can be touching her and caring for her ... and involving her in family activities, the better for her," he said. "The parents' argument was, 'If she's smaller and lighter, we will be able to do that for a longer period of time.'"

Answer
Personally, I think that the parents reasoning is a slippery slope. I know how difficult these decisions are from a personal perspective. But I think such treatment may be against the person's best interests and would not ensure the outcome the parents envisioned. Despite their having the best intentions, I would not advocate this treatment mostly for fear of unforeseen repercussions to the person and fear that it would not accomplish the goal I sought.

At what age range do most babies start to crawl?

Q. I know all babies develop at different times. In what month do they start to crawl? I have a 4 mo old and he rolls all over the place! I am so excited to see him start crawling! 1st baby and a boy!

Answer
http://www.drgreene.org/body.cfm?id=21&action=detail&ref=354
Rolling over, sitting without support, cruising (walking along furniture), and walking independently are important developmental milestones. Crawling isn't.

Crawling isn't even mentioned in my favorite pediatric development textbook!

This seems strange since, of any of these behaviors, crawling is most associated with babies. The truth is many babies never crawl! They do need to find some way to move across the floor. Each will do so at unpredictable times and in distinctive ways. Your grandson may be a scooter, one who likes to stay upright and scoot across the floor on his bottom. Many babies prefer creeping, or wriggling forward on the stomach. Many children will crab-crawl, moving backwards. And, of course, many children will get up on all fours and crawl forward in the traditional way. Each child is unique.

Some adults are concerned that children who don't crawl in the traditional way will be less coordinated. This is a myth. As long as the baby begins to move across the floor using each arm and each leg, there is no cause for concern.

I'm reluctant to mention time frames, but somewhere between six and ten months I expect babies to discover some way to move horizontally across the floor to get desired objects. Obstacles to this include the child's not spending enough time on the floor, using an infant walker (which often eliminates the desire to learn crawling behaviors -- infant walkers are bad for proper development), having toys brought to the infant, pushing the child to learn to crawl, and physical problems such as muscle weakness. If babies actually crawl, it usually begins at around 8 to 10 months

Total cost estimate for baby's first year?

So I'm 16 and pregnant. My due date is January 28th, 2014. My boyfriend and I are gonna take full responsibility for this baby and pay for everything he/she needs without relying on our parents or taking any government assistance. We'd like to see if anyone has a rough estimate on how much our baby will cost us for the first year? We understand we'll have to provide for him/her throughout their whole childhood, but for now we're wondering around how much it will cost for the first year. I have insurance through Tricare since my father is in the army, so all of our hospital fees are covered by that, including the birth. I am planning on breast feeding and using a breast pump which is also free with insurance, so we won't be needing to pay for formula either. I know eventually I'll have to total it up myself and I know it all depends on what brands of baby products we buy, but for now it'd be nice to have a rough estimate of how much it'll cost us. Include diapers & wipes (I know that's gonna be a lot! haha), clothing, baby food, the nursery set (crib, changing table, etc.), car seat and stroller, toys, baby care items (such as a baby tub, lotion, shampoo, etc.), and any additional items the baby will need. Thank you so much!!
@bby: Yes, we're getting a breast pump for free through my insurance. We aren't formula feeding.
Also, is that estimate with or without hospital and birthing fees? We won't have to pay for those because I have Tricare insurance free since my dad is in the army.

Answer
Sorry but the person above is so beyond wrong. Having a baby is no where near that cheap. $300 for diapers for a whole year? That's only $25 a month. One box of the cheapest diapers is $32 and you only get about 260 in them which isn't enough for a whole month. All of her calculations are so so wrong. she didn't even include wipes? A baby doesn't have to be super crazy expensive like $20,000, but no way in hell is it less than $2,000 a year.

Buying the cheapest diapers and wipes, its probably about $75 a month. That alone is $900.

You'll need clothes for a whole year, so newborn, 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12. If you buy used like off of Craigslist, you could probably get by with $50 for newborn (they arent in them long) and $100 for each clothes size, so that's a total of $450.

You'll need Bibs ($75), burp rags ($100), towels ($200), and wash clothes. ($75) so $450

Shampoo, body wash, lotion, You'll probably need about 20 bottles of each for the whole year, so $180

With those things alone its $2,000. That's not even close to half the things you'll need.

I didn't even get into a crib, changing table, dresser, Bassinet, pack n play, swing, bouncer, stroller, infant car seat, baby car seat (yes they're different and you'll need both) high chair, exersaucer, ect. All of which is safe to say another $1,500 if bought cheapest possible.

There's also all the little things like bottles, nuks, diaper rash cream, bedding, blankets, toys, baby monitor, diaper genie, baby bath, sunscreen, baby grooming kit, ect. For a whole year I'd say at least $500

Breast feeding isn't free either. You'll need breast milk storage bags, breast pads, nipple cream, breast feeding cover ups, nursing bras, a nipple shield, special bottles for the breast pump. Easily another $1,000 breast feeding things are way more expensive than you'd think. You'll probably spend $600 alone on storage bags and breast pads.

There's so much more you need I didn't even come close to adding in here. Id say if you buy used and the cheapest stuff possible $7,000-$8,000 is a good estimate. If you buy new things, I'd say about $10,000-$12,000.

Ok just a question about what i should do? GIVe me answers?

Mikah

ok im having a baby and i plan to spend about 6000 on her before her arrival. Should i buy like everything the baby needs now or should i do it later. I dont think i will have to money to buy everything later so should i buy things such as high chair, clothing for the next season, clothing that she will need later shuch as tshirts and stuff, sippy cups, walkers, toys, play centers, potty chair exc.....

Answer
First, is there any way you can get someone to throw you a baby shower or a baby welcoming party? I got so much stuff from my shower and welcoming party, and there were only about 10 people at each.
The things you have to have before the baby is born are:
Car Seat (and stroller if you want a system)- up to $600
Crib/bassinet or Pack N Play- available on ebay for DEALS.
bedding to fit (two sets each)
Minimum 3 each (1 wearing, 1 washing, 1 clean) of: sleepers, onesies, socks, bibs, burp cloths, wash cloths, and receiving blankets (for swaddling)
Some cute outfits for guests, get mostly 0-3 mos and some newborn sizes-there is a big diff.

You won't need the sippy cups, exersaucer/walker and high chair for a good six months. Shop around for deals if you are trying to stick to a budget- I got a pack n play on ebay for $80, it had a changing table and bassinet and of course can be used as a crib, that easily saved us $500. The best part is that my son can always sleep in his own bed. Make sure your infant capsule can go up to 13kg/28lbs- that is more than a year old then you can get a convertible car seat that turns into a booster (about $300.) Don't get too comfortable with your budget- you may need to get bottles and all that stuff after the baby is born and then have to pay for formula, hope not but just a word of warning. Put the difference in a savings account for all those unexpected expenses.

Most of all, have so much fun shopping. :)

What baby doll toys does your daughter have?

I bought Sophie a $10 baby doll infant carrier... it sucks, I know why it was only $10 now! So, I'm looking to see what other mommas have and what your daughters liked. Add a link if you have one.

Thanks!

Answer
She has a variation of this set in pink: http://images.bizrate.com/resize?sq=500&uid=1085529364 We got it for her at Sam's Club last year. It's very cute. The stroller has held up very well... the swing is kind of a pain in the butt and falls off, but she loves it none the less. The crib is crap though... but she likes to sit in it herself, which i'm guessing is why it ripped so easily. Plus the bars move around so it's crooked a lot (which has to do with HER using it instead of the babies lol). I would love to get her a wooden crib, i've got my eyes out for that for her this year. I'm tempted to buy just the stroller in this set if I can find it... since it's bigger than the one she has now, she's starting to outgrow it a bit. But so far this set is a winner, she loves her, my nephew loves it, the kids who come to play love it.

EDIT: Found it. The set she has is the fisher price precious planet at Toys R us. :) We got the entire set for $45. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3546334

EDIT2: I think this is a pretty cute set too, and does look pretty durable. I'm tempted to get her part of this set too, since she is so tall for the stroller she has now lol http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2669620

Can anyone give me some American based toy companies that are not linked with lead poisoning?

I have a 6 month old daughter and I am getting concerned with all the recalls in infant/toddler/children's toys. If you also have any great ideas about bottles and so forth. Much would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Melissa and Doug . . . . AWESOME toys that are made in America and can be found at Toys R Us. Their products are also high quality and usually wooden (as opposed to plastic). They also focus on educational value as opposed to TV character association.

Quote from their site:
"Additionally, we specifically test our paints and coatings very frequently, to be sure our toys meet or exceed government recommendations limiting heavy metals and lead in children’s items. We have cabinets full of thousands of passing test reports, and these passing results have been verified by 3rd party independently accredited testing laboratories, considered by many to be the best scientific laboratories in the world."

Babies should not be doing anything but playing with baby certified toys.

At what age would it be appropriate for an infant to play with the following toys?

I need to know at what age (from birth to 12 months) would it be appropriate for an infant to play with bead mazes (those toys you see at dental/doctor offices which beads on winding plastic wires). Also what age would it be appropriate for them to play with shape sorters?
Thanks in advance :)

What is the best car seat toy for a forward facing carseat?

I am going to be getting my son a new car seat because he no longer fits in his old one. The new one is forward facing. In the old car seat, we have a bar that has rattles and a light up musical frog that my son loves to play with. Anyone have any ideas for an awesome car seat toy? I'm looking for the best one out there, one that I haven't seen on my google searches. Thank you!!

Answer
When deciding on any toy to be allowed in the car, think about what's going to happen in an accident and it goes flying. This will sound silly, but its a simple test to decide whether it should be allowed as a toy in the car: smack yourself upside the head with it. did it hurt? If not, go for it, if it hurt you, think about how much more it will hurt a baby, whose skull is softer, and when in an accident it will hit with a lot more force. Ican't at all remember who made them, but check your local kids resale shop (like Once Upon a Child) since they seem to have them often: soft toy steering wheels so child can play-drive while in the car.

However, a bigger issue here, would be how old is your child and what size? Sounds like he's outgrowing an infant carrier car seat? Kids do not go from infant carrier seat straight to forward facing seat. The next step is a rear facing convertible car seat. Most state laws require kids to be rear facing until at least 20lbs and 1 year, but more importantly, the laws of physics say kids should stay rear facing as long as they possibly can. Its THAT much safer. The old 20lbs/1 year rule is just that. OLD. It came about in the 1980's when our seats were only capable of rear facing to 20lbs and we didn't know any better. Now we definitely know better and all current convertible seats rear face to at least 30lbs, but its hard getting people to realize this.
Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child's life!
1)A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age.
2)A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
3)Current research suggests that children under the age of two years are 75 percent less likely to die or be seriously injured when they are riding rear facing.
4)In a recent article from Injury Prevention, it was found that the odds of severe injury to forward facing children age 12-23 months old was 5.32 times higher than a rear facing child. (Car Safety Seats For Children: Rear Facing For Best Protection; Injury Prevention 2007; 13:398-402.)

It works this way: when you get in an accident and run into something, the car stop suddently, but everything and everyone in the car keeps moving in the direction the car was moving when it stopped, in most accidents, this is forward. So in an accident with a child in a forward facing seat, his head, the heaviest part of the body on babies and toddlers, flies forward very forcefully and easily snaps. If that same child is in a rear facing seat, his head tries to fly forward but is supported by the back of the rear facing seat, so there is no stress put on the child's neck and spine.

Check out this photo album exclusively of rear facing kids, many of them much older than 12 months: http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/RFAlbum.aspx There isn't a single documented case of a child breaking their legs b/c they were rear facing in an accident. There are, however, lots of cases where children have been killed and seriously injured where a rear facing seat would have protected them better. And most kids actually prefer to be rear facing b/c they can rest their feet on the vehicle seat back. When they are forward facing, their legs don't receive enough support and will frequently fall asleep.
WHY REAR FACING:
http://www.carseat.org/Resources/633.pdf
In the foreground is a forward facing seat, in the background a rear facing seat. You can see how much trauma the forward facing dummy has to endure. The rear facing child simply rides it out.
http://www.oeamtc.at/netautor/html_seiten/kisitest_2002/videos/test2002/frontcrash/maxicosipriori.mpg

Here's another video. You can see how there is NO trauma to the baby, it simply sits there waiting for it to end.

Where can I buy a stainless steel mirror (18 inches by 12 inches) to hang over a baby crib?

Paulina R

Does anyone know of a toystore or toy manufacturer that sells such a thing? It cannot be made of glass, has to be very highly polished stainless steel or some other metal that cannot break but reflects a face as well as a glass mirror does.

Any ideas?
I had one once. My 3 month old loved looking at herself, she could see herself with this size mirror.
I just want to get another for my grandkids. No danger at all, there were 4 holes in the corners, it strapped on the crib sides, all sharp edges were covered, and I removed it when she turned 5 months old and was able to learn to sit up.

Answer
Look for a mylar mirror with plexiglass. Infant's eyes are not developed as well, and they like the play of light more than seeing themselves.

Here are some questions that i wish you would be willing to answer about your infant. Just explain if you agree or not. Also if you could put what age your child was.

Thanks in advance

·Sits unaided- spends more time in upright position
·May be able to crawl
·May be able to climb stairs
·Develops eye-hand coordination
·Prefers primary caregivers
·May cry when strangers approach
·Commonly exhibits anxiety when parent or caregiver leaves
·Pats own reflection in the mirror
·May push away things not wanted (e.g., bottle, toys)
·Begins to “play” with adults
·Babbles to himself or herself
·Puts everything in mouth
·Solves simple problems (e.g., will move obstacles aside to reach object)
·Transfers from hand to hand
·Responds to changes in environment and is able to repeat actions that cause change (e.g., sound of rattle)
·Drops objects repeatedly
·Fascinated with small objects
·Begins to respond to words

These are three theories. Please tell me which on u agree withand why

Freud’s first stage of psychosexual development is the oral stage, which lasts from birth to about 15 months. In this stage, the id, which contains all the basic needs and feelings, is dominant. The ego, the rational part of the mind, is under formation due to the development of body image and delay of gratification. Body image is developed as the infant realizes that the body is distinct from the outer world. The infant also gradually realizes that gratification is not immediate and that it has to produce certain behaviors to initiate actions that lead to gratification. The key experience in this stage is weaning, which leads to the child’s first feeling of loss, and the baby’s awareness of self. Success during this stage leads to the formation of independence and trust, whereas too much or too little gratification can lead to an immature or passive personality.

Erick Erickson’s theory states that children from 0-12 months of age are in stage one of psychosocial development. This stage is called the oral sensory stage. Erickson believes that neonates at this stage can experience Trust or Mistrust. Trust meaning infants live through and love through their mouths. In the trust stage parents will respond to the infants needs with consistency and continuity, infants believe the world is a safe place. Mistrust can occur with parents who are overly protective; child will be overly trusting and gullible. Child cannot believe that anyone would harm them

Piaget is best known for his cognitive development theory. The first scheme of his theory is the Sensorimotor and this scheme is divided into four different stages 0-12 months. During this scheme Piaget believes that infants develop their primary circular reactions such as sucking, staring, listening, ad grasping objects during the first six months. From 6-12 months Piaget has called this stage the secondary circular reactions. This is where the infant is more aware of objects and people. The infant will also respond to the object or person.

Answer
Which I agree with and why? I believe that all three have truth to them and all are valid. As a general rule I tend to agree more with Piaget's theories (for infants as well as older children). His theory seems to be the most balanced and insightful with out trying to impose any other theory on top of it. Like I said, though, I do believe that all three views contain truth.

Freud is correct that too much or too little gratification can lead to an immature or passive personality, and that the id is the primary driving force for an infant. Freud is almost always, especially in this case, incorrect about a development of body image and the focus of the child being just on gratification. Since all of Freud's theories stem from an idea of gratification, though, it makes sense for him that he says this.

Erickson is correct that infants can and do experience trust and mistrust. Mistrust also occurs, however, when an infant's needs are not met (example: feeding on a schedule instead of demand, CIO).

Piaget's theory is focused primarily on fact, not in interpreting those facts, and he is correct.

I'm 14 and i got a 13 year old pregnant?

Brandon

I'm 14, i had sex with my 13 year old best friend who is a girl, i asked if i should do it or not on here a couple week ago, most people said i shouldn't, I'm sorry i didn't listen to those guys :'( someone please help what should i do should i tell my parents??? Can i get arrested because we're underage? She wants to keep the baby, but that means i will loose my education looking after it please help me

Answer
No you can't get arrested at least not in the US if one were an adult and the other a minor it would be different but the law is the least of your worries just hope her father doesn't shoot you. Hope she doesn't call rape. You will not lose your education looking after the baby, see your high school guidance counselor for information on what you can do. As the father you actually have no say she can literally abort your baby and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it. I found out from the bottom website that you do have a right if paternity is established to prevent a third party adoption but you need legal representation. As for what to tell your parents. Tell them the truth. Come up with a plan first how much is it going to cost to feed, clothe, and childcare for the baby. How will you finish your education, get your guidance counselors help? Your childhood is officially over even if she aborts or the baby is given up for adoption or miscarries you will never be the same ever again there is no easy way out and no way out. Best case scenario Clothes $5.00 a bag prior seasons clothes thrift store in the spring or maybe the charity will have compassion on you and give you what you need. $10.00 yard sale play yard to sleep baby. $6.00 for 30 off brand disposable diapers think 60 diapers a week, or go cloth if babysitter. daycare is willing to use. Baby wash 1 tsp baking soda to 8 oz water. Baby safe detergent use homemade detergent (1 bar grated soap dissolved in 5 gal hot water) and vinegar to soften, clean, disnfect and remove odors recipies on line. Blend your own baby food or go on WIC they will provide you with formula.
Stay off the drugs (both to keep parental rights and to get into the military) graduate high school at an accelerated rate by age 17 and join the military family housing allowance free insurance (does not include dental) food allowance and clothing allowance it isn't a glamorous job and you will still qualify for food stamps but your family will be taken care of. You need at the very minimum 5 sets of clothes per baby per 3, 6, 12, 24 and 36 month size and at least two warm sweaters or something. 24-36 month shirt is a newborn night gown and size 2 capris are 6 month pants cause of the diaper difference when you change to panties. You can get these clothes from a charity or a friend sho's kid outgrew it. Toys will be the least of your worries the only toys they really need are a binky and hard rubber teething ring, they love to play with non toys like matching socks and stacking measuring cups. The best infant soother out there is the womb sounds bear which you should give your child even if given up for adoption because it reminds them of the comfort of the womb and will be the only piece of you that s/he will have. You and the baby and best friend will qualify fro food stamps and WIC and clothing programs by charities. Your baby momma will need at least two maternity outfits one dress and one pair pants. Maybe her dress and shirts will stretch with her. Ask a relative like your grandmother if she can sit for you for nothing. I was older when I got pregnant before marriage and I know how tough it can be telling Dad and Mom first develop your own plan and then get your parents in on it and listen to their plan. You have a right to keep your child. And you can finish school I am 30 with three kids and I am still in college and I graduate next spring it is tough but not impossible. I owe all my financial stability to the military and I recommend that you join. You don't have to make a career out of it but it will set you on your feet financially and help you provide for your kid. Medicaid will cover all pre and post natal appointments and the birth.

How do you decorate a baby's room if you are co-sleeping? How long can she sleep in a cradle?

I have a happy 5 month old daughter. My husband and I are dedicated to attachment parenting. She sleeps in a cradle next to our bed half the night and then joins us in our bed for her night feed at 2AM. Sometimes she wakes up with us. Sometimes she wakes up in her cradle.

Answer
I attachment parent and did co-sleeping with an Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper with my son as an infant... when my son reached the weight limit (at 7 months) we got him a crib and put it in his own room along with his toys and books and pictures on the wall -- nothing fancy, just a place to start putting all of his stuff, and a place to play.

We never "forced" him to sleep there. At first, we would let him take a nap in his new crib... We let him play in his room during the day... (meanwhile, he was sleeping nights in our bed since he was too big for the Co-Sleeper)... after a couple weeks, he understood that he had his own room, and would even crawl over, push the door open and go inside to play with his toys. He started building up positive associations with his room (rather than associations of it being like a prison). We let him initiate most of the time he spent in his room (instead of us sticking him in there).

Once he started napping in his crib with no problems, we started putting him down at night (this was at 12 months old)... if he cried, one of us would immediately go in, pick him up and rock him etc and then put him back down... we NEVER let him "cry it out"... we never wanted to make him think that going in the crib = being alone.

For a couple weeks, this was tedious (we would put baby to bed 25 times before he would go to sleep)... but eventually he trusted the situation (because we go in IMMEDIATELY if he cries) enough that we put him down now (at 15 months) and he smiles at us, hugs his teddy bear and goes to sleep. He wakes extra early (5 am) for a diaper change and to cuddle in mom&dad's bed for an hour or two until breakfast... so we are still in transition...

I think the main thing with attachment parenting is to let the child choose independence, instead of forcing it. Take it slow... eventually the child is going to want/need their own room, so set one up where they have fun (toys etc) read books to her in there etc... and once she enjoys spending time there she will naturally want to sleep there as well.

There are no rules, other than let your child lead you... children know what they want/need, so as long as you pay attention to her signals of readiness, you will know what/when to do her own room.

When will my infant start playing with toys?

Jadahs mom

I was wondering when will my baby Jadah start sitting up on her own and playing with her toys? She is 3 months old and Ive tried to introduce rattles to her and little bears. Also could she be teething ?...
She always has her hands in her mouth and slobbing She also like to chew on her clothes to where the front of her shirt in soaking wet.
thanx everyone!

Answer
My son noticed his toys at about 10 weeks...and started batting & slapping at them (on his activity mat) at about 11-12 weeks. He hasn't yet been able to sit up on his own, nor is he able to hold onto a toy and play with it yet...but I suspect it will be soon.

Get some teething keys or gumming toys...your child might like those, since she is chewing on everything right now. BTW, this behavior is completely normal!

Does anybody have any tips for babysitting for an infant?

I've got a part time job for when I go to Canada babysitting a 4 month old boy. I've had babysitting experience before but for no kids under the age of 18 months. Obviously, this is quite different because he's a lot younger and I can't just leave him to play with his toys like I can do with older kids. Has anyone had any similar experiences? Can you give me some tips?

Answer
You are certainly right- you can't leave a 4 month old alone! Never leave babies unattended. They'll fall over when you think they won't/can't, etc.! You can talk to them, play with age-appropriate toys with them, sing/lullabys, bath time is enjoyable for them, even reading to them at that young age is recommeneded and my daughter seemed to enjoy it! You can go for walks in the stroller if the weather is nice enough, or just bundle baby up well if it's a bit cold. Also babies like activity centers, jumpers, exersaucers at this age. Baby will be rolling around that age and soon enough, starting to sit up and crawl which is a fun, fun time.

Activity ideas for insight into children with learning disabilities?

Jeananne

Okay so as part of a group project, I need to come up with a quick activity that doesn't require too many supplies, that would give insight to how a child with a learning disability of any kind would see, hear, or take in information. I found a great idea involving mirrors, where students had to trace stars but it was very difficult, however, I do not have the budget to supply mirrors for a whole class. I'd appreciate any ideas!

Answer
I think having a sensory project would be ideal. All you need is a few small cardboard boxes or shoe boxes.

Whether the student is blind already, or you can blind fold them you can have them guess what something is by their sensory.

In each box you will have objects they can touch, smell, hear, taste and a visual object.

>Touch you will have a rough and soft object in 2 separate boxes: Cotton Balls and Sand Paper

>As for taste: (place one jelly belly) jelly bean in the box and have the student pick it up and taste it. *beware of those students who are unable to chew, food allergies, diabetes You may just tell them what the flavor is. Again this would be ideal to taste jelly beans because jelly beans are a variety of flavors. Every student will have an opportunity to experience another flavor from the other students.

>Smell: I would say get a cheap can of coffee beans or ground coffee

>Visual: A picture book or maybe an infant baby toy has a lot of visual on it. You can go to a used thrift store or maybe ask someone you know who has children who out grown their picture books or toys.

>Sound: You can probably go to the music teacher to see if you can borrow a few bells or drums. If that is not the choice. Put a few of those coffee beans or jelly beans in a soda bottle and have them shake the container. *everyone has a recycle bin for a soda bottle or soup can.

Depending how far you want to go with this assignment. You can either give them a hand made worksheet that you made on the computer or just review with them what they experienced through their sensor's.

Answer
•When dealing with children, praise more, criticize less.

•Never say no to a gift from a child.

•Your children get only one childhood; think of this when you “don’t have time” to play, hug, kiss, and express your love for them. Make time for I’m sorry, I’m listening, I love you.

•You is smart, you is kind, you is important. [Kathryn Stockett in The Help]

•Children need models rather than critics. [Joseph Joubert (1754-1824)]

•You teach people how to treat you. It starts when your children are born. If you tolerate poor behavior, your kids will expect to get away with deplorable actions.

•There are two things you can and should give your child: roots and wings.

•Eliminate toy clutter. Children of all ages will play more creatively and independently with five toys than they will with 50.... Fewer toys allow a child to focus more effectively.... [John Rosemond in “Living With Children” 2011]

•Dealing with kids: It takes a thousand “attaboys” to erase a single “you're not good enough.” [Dr. Phil 2/12]

•A parent’s time is the coin of childhood. {Alema Pequoia}

•Children are our future: raise them with love and discipline; teach them respect and kindness.

•Children are natural mimics who act like their parents despite every effort to teach them good manners.

•Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word-for-word what you shouldn't have said.

•A child who learns to manage a little courtesy, even under pressure, is a child who is operating well in the world, a child with a positive prognosis.

•There’s nothing that can help you understand your beliefs more than trying to explain them to an inquisitive child. [Frank A. Clark]

•Treat the Earth well: it was not given to you by your parents; it was lent to you by your children. [Kenyan proverb]

•Manners (otherwise known as “social skills”) are at the heart of the whole parental enterprise. Every infant is born adorable but selfish and the center of the universe. It’s a parent’s job to teach children that there are other people, and that others have feelings that can be hurt.

•We are all children sometimes, in our heart of hearts. [Jude Morgan in Charlotte and Emily]

•Little child, little problems; big child, big problems. [Anna Quindlen in Every Last One]

•We don't get most of our fears as adults; we bring them from childhood. [David Wiltse in Close to the Bone]

•It’s easier to build strong children than to repair broken men. [Frederick Douglas]

•Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, you should cherish every moment and realize that the wonderment growing inside you is the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle. [Erma Bombeck (1927-1996)] (baby, childbirth, life)

•In the same way that you cannot choose your parents, neither can you choose your children. [idea from “The Talented Mr. Ripley”]

•Fill a child’s bucket of self-esteem so full that the rest of the world can’t poke enough holes in it to drain it dry.

•The only role models who have an actual impact are the ones at home at your dinner table.

•God should double your patience when you marry and triple it when you have children. {Alema Pequoia}

•Spare the rod and spoil the child is a warning, not a commandment.

•Even children have good ideas sometimes, probably because they have not yet learned prejudice and obfuscation, and do not screen their possibilities. {Alema Pequoia}

•If you truly love your children, give them more time than anything else. Your time is really all you have that is genuinely yours to give. {Alema Pequoia}

•Remember: What you do, what you say, how you listen, what you allow to happen in your family and household is the attitude and behavior you are modeling for your children that they will absorb and apply to their own lives in the future. {Alema Pequoia}

•Pay attention—real attention—to a small child. The adults who did that when you were a kid are probably your role models.

•Parental Commandments: Be consistent. Actions have consequences. Say what you mean and mean it. Parents work together as a team. Don't make promises you can't keep. Listen to your children. Establish a routine. Respect is a two-way street. Positive reinforcement works much better than negative reinforcement. Manners are universal. Define your role as parents.

My 1 year old wakes up at 4 am and screams, and he won't stop until we get him. How can I make it stop.?

Wardinger

Answer
Did GSU *REALLY* just call your child a pet? Your child is not a pet. Don't follow that advice and treat it like one. How insulting!

Don't leave your child alone when they are screaming at night. The reason the child might stop is because they have lost trust in you. Why would you want that?

The first stage of Erikson's theory on development is "Trust vs. Mistrust." The infant and toddler stages are a time for the child to realize that, when they need you the most, you are going to be there for them. If you loose that developmental stage at this point, it will carry through for the rest of their lives.

Let me say that again - If you loose that developmental stage at this point, it will carry through for the rest of their lives.

What kind of toys does your child have in his crib? A stuffed animal and a toy similar to these:

http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=2011&e=detail&selcat=bgtoys&pid=34168

may help him if he wakes up. He may be able to keep himself occupied and not become as afraid.

If you wear perfume, try lightly scenting a blanket with it and leaving it in his crib. Smell is the strongest association senses. That may help him quite a bit.

Does he have any lighting or is the room pitch black? Try a night light as this may help him feel more comfortable.

Remember that, at this age, if a child cannot see you, they might think you are no longer there. They do not necessarily have a concept yet that if you're not in their vision or sight of any of the other senses, you still exist. He is crying out of fear sometimes that he is alone. Give him the reassurance every time that you are there when you hear him. It is a LOT!!! of work, but the payoff is there in knowing you are doing what is best for your child.

I hope the other suggestions help some.

Matt
