14 month baby hates bath time?

kimB

My son screams and cries when it is time to take a bath. He gets very excitedf when we are fulling hte tub and he helps put in his toys. When we put him in he instantly screams. And the water isn't too hot or cold. This has been going on for 2 months now. He loved to play in the tub with all this little toys and then we were at the in-laws. My husband and I were giving him a bath ( in December) and he has screamed ever since. Any ideas as to how long hating the bathtime will last? I am going out of my mind. He won't even play in his infant tub without having a meltdown.

Answer
It varies so much. My son (3.5) still doesn't enjoy the washing part and wants to go straight to the fun play part of it. So I get the washing done in about <5 minutes.

-Play kid music
-Offer toys that are only for bath time
-Sing songs/make it fun
-Dip his feet in and out and smile/laugh

A lot of times your (the parent)'s shocked/scared face of seeing your kid cry will make them even more uncomfortable, I've noticed this with my son. So lighten up and laugh.

A BIG thing with my son since about age 2 was fear of water in the eyes. When I rinsed his hair, he went CRAZY. It was making me nervous of making a mistake. I finally figured out to let him hold a small towel to his eyes so any over spill would hit the towel, and not go into his eyes/face.

Also, he didn't like rinsing in general. So I'd count back from "20" "19....." slowly or fast depending on how much time I'd need to finish rinsing. At 14 mo, I am not sure if he'd understand counting, but you could sing a favorite song and when it ends, the cleaning is over.

Slowly try dipping him in the water, in and out, just the toes, then the knees, splash him, maybe he's sensitive of temperature change. Do it slowly.

First I get ALL the bathing done and then it's play time so I am not on my knees for 20 minutes, but it may be different with your son. Play...wash...play...wash.. on and on.

Have other water 'experiences' that are fun....even out of the tub. Fill up a small tub of water (supervised) and let him throw a boat in, bath toys....don't make the tub/kitchen sink always for serious bath time/associated with screaming.

Is he scared of the tub? I had a "DUCK" inflatable tub that my son just HATED. I had to return it even though *I* thought it was cute.

Is it something simple like him slipping in the tub (fear of drowning), or ...? Put a towel under his butt so he won't slip...sometimes these baby tubs are slippery!!

8 month old son and toys?

what toys are good for xmas and are worthwhile for a long time for a 8 month old boy who will be 10 months on xmas??? I am going to get him the fisher price activity walker but what else that is worth the $??
I have the gooble and go hippo and the drop and roll a rounds dinosaur
toys that assist motor skills would be great

Answer
With 3 sons I have learned more about boy toys than I ever wanted to know. Here are a few things to consider before spend a ton of money:
Are you into educational toys for him??
Are you want toys that he can entertain himself alone or are you willing to use them with him?
How far a head of his age are you wanting to expose him to toys?
How is he developmentally?? If he is behind you may want to consider toys to assist his motor skills.

Once you decide on those questions it will be easier to give you assistance one wht are good toys. My boys are 8-10 hours away from their grandparents on both sides, so birthdays and holidays they usually get extra. My playarea for them is a barn that is attached to our home and it is 1000sq ft filled with toys. I have an opinion on all of the toys they have or have been exposed to. I know I didn't really answer your question, but I just thought the advice on what types of direction you might be headed with toys would be more helpful than just a list of toys.

Edit:
For Gross Motor skills (the large muscles): I suggest
- Learn & Groove Musical Table by: LeapFrog ~ this is a standing activity table that will entice your son to pull himself up to a standing postion.
- Baby Gymnastics Bounce & Spin Zebra by: Fisher-Price ~ I purchased this for my nephew who is 11 months old. He loves it. It is a great work out for his little legs.
- 5-in-1 Adjustable Gym by: Little Tikes ~ this grows with your child physical developments and stimulates eye/hand coordination.
Now for Fine Motor skills (small muscles like finger manipulation): I suggest
- V.Smile Baby: Infant Development System by: Vtech ~ yes this is just like a video game, but it requires your child's brain development to coinside with finger manipulation.
- Laugh & Learn: Learning Puppy by: Fisher-Price ~ this wonderful puppy helps your child to learn ABC's, 123's, parts of the body, colors, play games, plus sing along to 10 favorite songs. Dog bone collar lights up to the music!
- Baby's First Toys by: Sassy ~ this one is by far the best for fine motor skills. There are a lot of pieces for your child to link together and even chew on.

Answer
I have a 3.5 month old son, and I asked my doctor about this earlier this week. (He's teething too right now.)
He gets the recommended dose for his weight every 4 hours if he's in pain, and my doctor said that as long as we're not giving a larger dose or doing it before 4 hours that he didn't have an 'x' amount of days that it can happen.
Basically, the amount of painkillers in infant tylenol or mortin is very small, so I wouldn't worry about it. I would try doing other things first, though. Infant oragel, teething toy, cold washcloth, etc.

i want to know what a baby does 2 & 3 months of age :)
what were your babies doing please be specific :)
thanks

Answer
2 months: Smiling, cooing, batting at toys, starting to laugh, lifting head off floor, following objects with eyes, able to sit with support, blowing spit bubbles.
3 months: Having conversations (IE: I talk and she cooes back), the mini push up (lifting her arms and belly off the ground while holding her head up), grabbing toys, trying to EAT her toys (haha), rolling belly to back, back to belly, able to stand while holding onto my fingers, plays with her feet and sticks them in her mouth.

Add: remember all babies develop at their own pace!

Things to do with my 3 month old?

Maribel

I am a first time mom and I have no clue on what to do with my 3 month old. Please help!!
any toys that I can buy....
gasmes I can play with him...
any thing educational....
Please I just feel useless and clueless. Thank you!

Answer
I'm a first time mommy with a 3 month old too!! I find that my baby gets bored easily. He's not into rattles, or basic toys as he can't really play with them yet. He'll look at them for a moment....but he'll turn away pretty quick as he gets uninterested....but here are his top 3 favorite things to keep him interested and learning....

#1. Baby Einstien DVD's. He LOVES them and will watch 2 dvd's back to back just sitting there...no fussing. He loves watching all the bright colors and toys. The two best ones for infants I think is Baby Bach, and Baby Bethoveen.
#2. Go outdoors. He loves to be outside. I think it's just smelling the fresh air, seeing a bunch of new things, and getting out of the house. He also loves being in his car seat when we have to drive somewhere.
#3. I don't know what they're called....but it's those toys where you lay the baby on it (on their back)....and they have toys that hang over their head that they can watch. Mine has toys that hangs down from it, music that plays, and parts that move and light up. He just lays on his back and looks at all the bright colors. He loves it! You can get them at babiesrus.

How can I let my 3 month have tummy time without my 16 month old hurting him?

I usually let my 3 month old do tummy time on our couch, but he looks like he'll be rolling over any minute.

When my first son was born I always let him play on a blanket on the floor, but now that I've got an infant and a toddler, I'm afraid my toddler will either fall on the baby or unintentionally hit him with a toy if the baby is on the floor. Any suggestions?

Answer
You really have to watch your 16 month old, that's all really. And if he gets near, tell him he has to watch out. After awhile, he'll realize it.

My son eventually would even crawl on the floor entertaining his brother. :)

When will my infant start playing with toys?

Jadahs mom

I was wondering when will my baby Jadah start sitting up on her own and playing with her toys? She is 3 months old and Ive tried to introduce rattles to her and little bears. Also could she be teething ?...
She always has her hands in her mouth and slobbing She also like to chew on her clothes to where the front of her shirt in soaking wet.
thanx everyone!

Answer
My son noticed his toys at about 10 weeks...and started batting & slapping at them (on his activity mat) at about 11-12 weeks. He hasn't yet been able to sit up on his own, nor is he able to hold onto a toy and play with it yet...but I suspect it will be soon.

Get some teething keys or gumming toys...your child might like those, since she is chewing on everything right now. BTW, this behavior is completely normal!

My little lady is 3 months today, and she has been showing all the signs that she is teething for about 2 or more weeks now, except for the fever, is it to soon?

Answer
It's not too soon, babies develop at different paces and don't let anyone tell you different.
My son got his first tooth at about 6 months, but had symptoms of teething for a whole month before that little tooth popped through (poor thing). My cousin got his first tooth when he turned 3 months old. Some babies still don't have teeth when they're 9 months old and it's all normal.

Give her specially designed toys to chew on (some you can put in the freezer to help sooth those gums) and if she does get a low grade fever, 0.25 mL of infant tylenol works wonders.

How do I get my child to fall asleep without the bottle?

I am flying with two infants under 2 with my in-laws any tips would be great?

*Robert &

I have never flown before and on top of that I am taking 2 children under the age of 2, luckily my in-laws are coming to and they said they will help me. My son is 22 months and my daughter is 3 months. We are going down for my husbands basic training graduation. The trip is 4-5 hours. Any tips and advice are greatly appreciated!! Also I want to find a double stroller that meets continental guidelines, help?? Thanks.

Answer
The 3 month old will probably be fine when it comes to not moving around for 5 hours. Either you or one of your inlaws should feed the baby while you're going up and down - this will help equalize the pressure in her ears and avoid ear pain (and the associated screaming.) With the 22 month old it will be difficult because he's going to want to move around - bring coloring books, his favorite small toy, and a portable DVD player with his favorite movies (buy a small CD case and stock some in there for the trip if you don't already have one, that way you don't have to cart around the DVD cases.) Bring some fruit snacks or something chewy for him to eat on the way up and down. The chewing and swallowing motion will help with his ears. If they cry or freak out don't panic - everyone on the plane expects a crying kid or two. If your 22 month old wants to move around let him - you guys can take walks up and down the aisles and you can point out cool features of the plane, the tiny bathrooms, the galley where they make snacks, etc. When it comes to strollers I would suggest avoiding a double stroller altogether. Since your in-laws will be there use the infants regular stroller and get a small umbrella stroller for your 22 month old. Remember that all these things must go through the X-ray machine at security and have to be able to fit in a tiny closet in the cabin of the plane or in the overhead compartment - smaller pieces will be easier to deal with.

Also, congratuations to your husband! Making it through basic is a great achievement.

How much is average for infant care?

Ginger

I live in upstate NY. We are taking care of a premature, (by 3 months) baby that is now 6 mo. old. He has a few medical problems and is on 6 different meds during the day and night. I was just wondering what we should be figuring for the cost of care. We have him basically day and night as the parents don't seem to have any time for him. They MAYBE spend 2 hours a week with him and even that is distracted by their friends. What do you think we should be charging? How much should we pay a sitter when we need one?

Answer
A family member of mine watches my son 9 hours a day Mon-Fri & charges $200 a week. I provide her with everything my son needs (food, diapers, clothing, toys... etc.). Break down the money & it about $4.50 an hour.
Figuring 10 hours a day for sleeping & the whopping 2 hours they contribute, that would be $432 for a Sun - Mon week (96 hours). If you provide the necessaties too, keep receipts and charge for those.

So that was the technical answer. But really you need to come up with a number that you are comfortable with & that the parents can afford.

I've always believed in paying well for babysitting. I justify my thinking being that a person is taking care of a child, not flipping burgers, and therefore should pocket well over minimum wage.
Good Luck.

What Are Your Thoughts About Exposing Infants To Television?

bee

My baby is only 3 months old and already stares at the tv when she is being changed or what not. I was CONSIDERING buying her some baby einstein videos to watch or look at while she is in her bouncer and I cook dinner or try and get dressed. Is that bad? Obviously I would never let the tv babysit my kid, but she is too young to hold toys or or sit up yet and I know the einstein videos are all music, shapes and colors. THOUGHTS?

Answer
There are no benefits to any tv program for a 3 month old baby, but if the tv is on while you are cooking or cleaning or whatever it would probably be better to have some kind of baby video on instead of some violent adult show full of foul language.

When my first son was born I always let him play on a blanket on the floor, but now that I've got an infant and a toddler, I'm afraid my toddler will either fall on the baby or unintentionally hit him with a toy if the baby is on the floor. Any suggestions?

A. You really have to watch your 16 month old, that's all really. And if he gets near, tell him he has to watch out. After awhile, he'll realize it.

My son eventually would even crawl on the floor entertaining his brother. :)

What Are Your Thoughts About Exposing Infants To Television?
Q. THOUGHTS?

A. There are no benefits to any tv program for a 3 month old baby, but if the tv is on while you are cooking or cleaning or whatever it would probably be better to have some kind of baby video on instead of some violent adult show full of foul language.

How do I get my pup to stop digging holes in my yard?
Q. Everytime I take him out to pee/poop he always digs holes. Ever since the snow melted. My landlord has told me its an issue and it needs to be stopped. I'm always outside with him, he's never left alone unless I'm the only one home and I'm nursing my infant. I've tried distracting him by playing fetch and with several other toys out there but he becomes not interested and starts digging. He's a 3 month old golden retriever/lab mix.

A. In the interests of not upsetting your landlord (and this is why so many rental properties exclude people with dogs!!) the moment he starts this, bring him in! Dogs usually dig because they have the opportunity, and are bored. More exercise now.

What are some tips for traveling with an infant?

Q. My husband and I, along with our now 3 month old son (he'll be about 5 months when we do travel), will be flying internationally from germany to the states and back, then from germany to Ireland and back. I know we need our passports, we've already have then... So does anyone have any tips for us? This will be the 1st time he's flown, hence the question. Thanks!!!

A. Been there done that...
- Diapers (Airlines might have it but keep some handy)
- Have medication for cough, cold and other general medicines.
- we had consulted the doctor on what needs to be done and any vaccination that needs to be taken when we are in the other country. Name of the medicine/vaccination in that country.
- Extra pair of clothes (2-3 pairs)
- Call the airline and ask them for the first seat. (that has the facility to put your baby into a pram like thing that gets attached to the wall before the seat.) Do this one well in advance as these go fast. To make sure when you reach the airport doubly make sure that they are giving you that seat. When you board the plane and when you reach the airport be the first to be there so that you get the first seat. Even if you call in advance when you reach the airport you might not get the seat and hence you have reach the airport well in advance.
- for in-flight - couple of small toys to keep the baby busy and MOST importantly pacifiers (specially while take off and landing as the pressure changes and the baby's ear get blocked and the baby does not know what to do, in this case pacifiers help.)
- Note that you might carry milk/milkbottle (as you might want to carry the brand that you are using like similac) etc but dispose of the milk when you reach the other country as they might fine you for bringing that into the other country.

It has been a few years and hence remember on this.

I am flying with two infants under 2 with my in-laws any tips would be great?
Q. Thanks.

Good Luck.

When will my infant start playing with toys?
