It is very important that infants sleep on their back, with no extra pillows, blankets, toys, etc in the crib with them. Swaddle him or tuck a blanket around him to keep him warm, and have him sleep on his back. This is important until 1 year of age, as it has been shown to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by up to 50%. After that, go by what is most comfortable for your baby. But always think of safety- once your baby can roll over, he can roll off of a crib or changing table. Once he can stand, he could tip over a low crib rail. Place your baby on his/her back on a firm, tight-fitting mattress in a crib that meets current safety standards.
Remove pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, stuffed toys, and other soft products from the crib.
