I have searched countless websites and still have not found an answer to my question. I am planning a early June ( the first week) vacation to Virginia Beach. I am learning that Sandbridge would be a good choice however we want access to the boardwalk. What would be a good hotel with the best of both worlds? Quiet but not too quiet. We like all that the tourist area has to offer but would prefer a bit quieter of a beach spot. Maybe if we are going in early June this won't be a problem but maybe it will be. I have read that there is a Military event going on with a concert that we would like to avoid. Does anyone have any suggestions? Does anyone know much about the trash pile hill? Are there carnival like rides there? I have searched sites with this info but it never gave off too many details. This is out first family vacation. My husband is 38 years old and has never seen the ocean. Our son is 7 and has never seen the ocean and we are bringing my step daughter who is 16. We are looking for fun family activities. I have already searched many things but reading about them does not explain what they are like from a persons perspective. WE just want to have a good time and not spend a fortune. We are traveling from Ohio. WE have chosen Virginia Beach because it is the closest ocean to us. ANY input would be great....What to see what to avoid and what is a good location? THANK YOU!

lol trash pile hill! I've lived here my whole life of 31 years and seen that dump turned into a nice park. 1x to 2x a year there is a carnval that arrives. I'd say it comes there around easter but it seems to vary a bit so I cant give you definate dates. There is a large payground called kids cove teens and small kids like this thing and a walk path around all of Mt. Trashmore. Up the hill usually has wonderful wind to fly a kite wich you can buy at a toy store or even a dollar store.Sandbridge tends to be a locals beach. There are no hotels and only 1 small general store but parking is free and the beach is tucked in very well so most tourist dont know about it. You've done a lot of research. The tourist hotels are along the main beach. I264 will end right at the beach and thats where most people will find their hotels. If you drive more left you will get out of the main crowd and will probally get to the slightly cheaper hotels. Although We will not get a hotel on the beach because they jack those prices up way too high. I would get one at one of the earlier exits. If your into camping, instead of turning left, turn right and keep going. You will see campgrounds on both left and right. The main beach does have a mini carnival along the boardwalk and there are several palces with mini golf.
Even if their is an air show keep to the far left side of 264 and you will bypass all those people waiting to get off to get to the base. The air shows are free if you wanted to go. They are loud but the navy organizes the parking very well. Every one but infants like the all day shows.
If you had extra money to spend there is the Virginia aquarium if you turn off 264 and go to the right. They recently jacked those prices up too and I havent checked what they are now but kids to very old enjoy that place. One year we had season tickets.
If your going early June they probally wont have put up the parking meters yet and most tourist come after school ends in late june to early july.
There is a place on princess Anne road. Probally a 30 min drive form the beach that did guided horse riding trails last year. i think their rates were reasonable. i could dig up their web site again if you wanted.
if you want more info or details just email and I can continue to babble.

Any suggestions for a good educational toy for a three yr old?
Kate
she has the LeapFrog Scribble and Write..
Answer
Anything made by Leap Frog- I love their products!
Arts and crafts supplies- crayons, fingerpaints, sidewalk chalk, blank paper and coloring sheets
musical instruments- harmonica, tambourine, maracas, cymbals, bells, CDs with lullabies and nursery rhymes and classical music on them.
Puzzles
Board games such as Chutes and Ladders
Card Games such as Memory
Bubbles, balls, balloons
Mega Blocks, Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys
Slides, Swings, Trampoline, Sandbox (and beach toys), toys to play with in the bathtub or sink (kitchen utensils work well).
Sports equipment- toddler basketball, baseball/softball, etc.
Refrigerator Magnets (alphabet and numerical)
Magnifying Glass, Critter Cage
DVDs- Leap Frog makes some educational DVDs as well
Computer software and/or websites- I have a three year old daughter who likes JumpStart. We also visit BrainQuest, Starfall and other websites.
Wagon
Dress up (stock up after halloween- various wigs, hats, facepaints, shoes, costume jewelry, etc.)
BOOKS! The look and find books are great, Books A Million has a big selection of them (some specifially for toddlers with more durable pages). Barnes & Noble has a great selection of DK Baby books, which are great for infants and toddlers. Traditional storybooks are great. Read to them, ask them questions such as how would that make them feel, what they think will happen next and my 3 year old likes to "retell" the story to me (an early reading skill).
Games such as Simon Says, I Spy, etc.- no toy required.
Instead of buying a toy, try spending that money on an activity instead. A month of Gymboree/Little Gym or gymnastics, dance, etc. Trip and/or membership to the aquarium, zoo, children's museum.
There are free activities, as well. Most libraries and/or book stores have a weekly story time.
